A surprisingly informative read By Dillon Valderemao I purchased this ebook before a trip to Malta with the hope that it would give me a quick understanding of the country, its history and people. I was surprised to find that it provided that and so much more! In The Story of Malta Ballou shares a wealth of information and experience that is astounding. He is able to jump from a discussion of the geology of the islands to an anecdote about trees in Mexico to an incident in China without losing a beat. It's sometimes disjointed, sometimes a bit dry, but always informative and facinating. I found Ballou's desire to discuss any and every topic at length invigourating! By "at length" I mean, for example that when discussing the architecture of a particular structure of Malta he would provide a whirlwind tour of the history of the Mediteranean Sea over the last millennium to provide some context. The book was written over a century ago so it does not provide any information about recent events impacting Malta - so nothing about Fortress Malta during World War Two or it's recent political history, not a major issue if you just want to get a feel for the place and understand what shaped it in the past. This book is not for everyone but I found it fascinating and would have loved to sit down for a lunchtime discussion with its author. He sounds well-read, very well-travelled (he has written other similar books on a variety of other places) and is not too shy to provide his opinion about absolutely anything. It's interesting, informative, and although I wouldn't call it a fun read it is enjoyable.

As it was published in 1893 I had no great expectations but as it was a free kindle e-book I had nothing to lose. Well, what a pleasant surprise. I loved it and it was fabulous to read about places I was planning on visiting or had already been too and to reflect on how things have changed, or not! A previous reviewer felt it was a bit dry and lacking in humour but I actually smiled a few times about comments or observations the author made - no politcal correctness in the 19th century! His dialogue in relation to religion and war are quite thought provoking and in some ways suggets that we are no further forward than were 110 years ago! I skipped the chapters on Gozo as I plan to visit these at another time and will revisit the book when I do so. Ballou researched topics discussed very well and made commentaries on all manner of topics from architecture, flora, culture, religion, history, art and so forth. I liked his writing style and as an aspiring travel writer it is a good book to read to get an idea what works and what doesn't. If you are planning a trip to Malta give it a go. If not, and are interested in European history, The Knights of St John and architecture then give it a go. What have you got to lose?

I live in Malta and really appreciate the book you sent to me. It was very informative on the history and struggles of that little chain of islands. I like these kinds of books that have been written long ago and now reprinted for us to enjoy.
