"[...]study of the Atlas Mountain dwarfs won us honorable mention by the British Ethnological Society. These were my yesterdays; but to-day I sat in Arthur Pickering’s office in the towering Alexis Building, conscious of the muffled roar of Broadway, discussing the terms of my Grandfather Glenarm’s will with a man whom I disliked as heartily as it is safe for one man to dislike another. Pickering had asked me a question, and I was suddenly aware that his eyes were fixed upon me and that he awaited my answer.[...]".

The House of a Thousand Candles, by Meredith Nicholson

About the Author Meredith Nicholson (1866–1947) was a best-selling author from Indiana, United States, a politician, and a diplomat. Nicholson was born on December 9, 1866 in Crawfordsville, Indiana, to Edward Willis Nicholson and the former Emily Meredith. Largely self-taught, Nicholson began a newspaper career in 1884 at the Indianapolis Sentinel. He moved to the Indianapolis News the following year, where he remained until 1897. He wrote Short Flights in 1891, and continued to publish extensively, both poetry and prose until 1928. During the first quarter of the 20th century, Nicholson, along with Booth Tarkington, George Ade, and James Whitcomb Riley helped to create a Golden Age of literature in Indiana. Three of his books from that era were national bestsellers: The House of a Thousand Candle, The Port of Missing Men, and A Hoosier Chronicle.

Well-written and quick-paced, the tale had just the right mixture of characters and circumstances, mystery and suspense, romance and skullduggery, to make for an enjoyable read. The only part that stretched credulity was the shootout in the library and why no one was seriously wounded or killed with all those bullets flying around. Other than that and the usual eBook typos (although minimal) and the strange over-usage of exclamation points (the 1909 style of punctuation?), the book was worth the time to read.

I easily recommend it to anyone that wants to escape into the past for a few days. This book inspired me to collect as many of Meredith Nicholson's writings as I could; but in my opinion, the rest fail to meet this high-water mark.

I've been spoilt by too many years of online entertainment streams that I have a hard time reading fiction any more. I can't remember the last time I read a fiction book. That said, I was building a bookshelf with a secret door, and I wanted to use a very old book as the "key" mechanism, ie manipulating the book would open the secret door. I found this book on ebay, original publication from 1905, for $8. I bought it for the cover. But once I got the book, I decided, hey it might be interesting to read. I had absolutely no idea what the book was about. But again, I'm lazy so I downloaded the librivox audio version and listened to the book in the car. Wow, what a great story! It has everything, and the pacing of a modern Hollywood movie. And it has secret passage ways and secret doors! It is the perfect book for this.
