1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It was soooo hard to get good help in the 17th/18th centuries....(sigh!!) By majenta Yes, Daniel Defoe (ROBINSON CRUSOE, MOLL FLANDERS, ROXANA) actually wrote a manual about "how hard it is to get good help these days"...because servants get above themselves and think they have a better idea than their employers about things like what is a liveable wage. Or that a visitor might believe he is greeting the lady or a daughter of the house, when it's really the maid thinking she deserves to wear nicer clothes than the ladies of the house. Or that the master of the house should watch out for the servant girl his wife hires, lest she flirt with him or be more bold about it, then run to his wife claiming that he assaulted her. Or the servant girl will set her sights on the son of the house and get him to elope with her. Hm....Wikipedia says that Defoe's birth name was Daniel Foe and he added the "De" to his name to sound more aristocratic, and he was pleased when people believed or assumed he truly was from the finer folk.Yes, this is available for free for your Kindle, listed as being 25 pages. Early on he claims to be writing simply so all can understand, because all need to understand, but almost right away I found something I needed to look up. So perhaps he was writing simply for the time. You know how grandiose the writing of that time was. But reading this did make me want to read more from Defoe, and I'm working on it.He is still worth reading, considering, and discussing. If you're not so familiar, you could do worse than start with this.
