"Big Data" is it SMART or are you SMART- ask Bernard Marr By CharlesRein Although I have always worked with Engineers and Software professionals in many techn ical areas and Industries I am not a Technical person, but I read and am able to comprend or to pick up the nuances of the particular Industry.I always like to read Industry Leading Professionasl who have the ability to take complex subjects and make it understandable to Lay practicioners in the Industry.Bermard Marr has done that in " Big Data". He takes the Concept of "Big Data" which has become the Hot Topic in every area of Business optimization and potential innovative opportunity for the next 20 years and offers many insightfull case studies to KISS "Keep It Simple s"Mr Marr takes the HYPE of what do we do with our data; and breaks it down into SMART Data. Five steps to learn how to ask the right QUESTIONS about your company and the DATA internal and external so that the Questions get answers that are relevant to solutions that will benefit your business or application.

How and why SMART decisions are based on SMART analytics By Robert Morris Much of what I know about "big data" and analytics I have learned from Tom Davenport and again I express my deep gratitude to him. In addition, I have read several dozen books by other authors on one or more aspects of one or both subjects and have learned much of value from them, also. I now share four convictions based on what I have learned thus far. First, the name of the game is not Big Data. Rather, it is having a sufficient quantity of the right data. Also, even then, enough of the right data is essentially worthless unless and until they guide and inform (a) the right decisions and (b) effective execution of those decisions. Also, all right data are important but some are more valuable than others. Finally, the relevance, importance, value, and sufficiency of data can change, sometimes significantly.For more than two decades, at least since Tim Berners-Lee devised the concept of a worldwide web, business leaders have been struggling to identify their companies' information needs and then fill them. These are critically important decisions. In recent years, this process has been facilitated, indeed expedited by various electronic technologies, so that better decisions can be made and then executed much faster than ever before.I agree with Bernard Marr: "The marriage of data and technology is radically changing our world and making it smarter. And business much become smarter too...Today the really successful companies understand where their customers are and, perhaps more importantly, what they are doing and where they are going. They know what is happening as it's happening and they allow that information to guide their strategy and inform their decision-making. Companies that don't embrace the SMART revolution will be left behind." Quite true.Marr introduces this acronym, SMART, for the business model he recommends:S = Start with strategyM = Measure metric s and dataA = Apply analyticsR = Report resultsT = Transform businessHe devotes a separate chapter to each component of the model. I love the SMART approach he takes in presenting the concept and use of Big Data. The acronym SMART has been used with different meaning in numerous environments with great success. SMART in my world of simulation meant Simulation and Modeling for Acquisition, Research and Training. I designed class rooms using SMART (the company) technology. Bernard has done a SMART thing with Big Data, for he is very SMART. With all fun aside, this is a must read for anyone who wants to learn about Big Data. Written in plain language, well organized with ample graphical aids, I am sure you will love it.I would completely disregard the one and two star ratings (one each). They are entitled to their wrong opinion. Perhaps they should try to write a book that all audiences can take in. It is difficult to do and Bernard has done it very well.
