About the Author Nobel prize-winning writer Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India, but returned with his parents to England at the age of five. Influenced by experiences in both India and England, Kipling s stories celebrate British imperialism and the experience of the British soldier in India. Amongst Kipling s best-known works are The Jungle Book, Just So Stories, and the poems Mandalay and Gunga Din. Kipling was the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel prize for literature (1907) and was amongst the youngest to receive the award. Kipling died in 1936 and is interred in Poets Corner in Westminster Abbey.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Ground-Breaking SF By Holly Ingraham Kipling had a relatively revolutionary method of story-telling that he developed in his Indian stories. Where his contemporaries would go into pages of background just in case you were ignorant of their setting or subject, Kipling figured what the average reader knew and would need to know of his foreign setting, and did not choke up his stories with infodumps (as we now call them).In "With the Night Mail," he brought this technique to science fiction. Before this, characters would stop and explain everything to each other, or the author would stop the story to explain everything in far more detail than necessary. WtNM pioneered the way that science fiction would normally come to be written and read thirty years later: feeding in information sidelong and letting the reader built up the image of the world.This is great speculation, great story-telling, and a rattling good read. It is one of the original sources of steampunk retrofuturism. The gas-impoverished world may yet come to dirigibles replacing gas-hog planes, with pillars of light beaming from earth to sky as navigation points if we can't keep our navsats aloft.The kicker is that, after giving us a typical adventure story of the year 2000, he went on to invent all the ads that would go in the magazine in which it appeared!Brilliant fun, and not to be missed.

A prophet ahead of his time By Kindle Customer Given the world's energy and pollution concerns the age of airships, or dirigibles, may very well be upon us. I've recently read several articles on how they are being constructed to move equipment and supplies when time is not an issue and economy and size of load is. The rising cost of fuel may bring back the airship as the preferred means of passenger travel in the not too distant future so this story may be more accurate than may presume. In any case it is a darn good story just in it's own right, and I highly recommend it to the fellow science fiction fan.

With it's vision of the future [our present] filled with Zeppelin transports, it's also an early futurist piece. With a slow, steady pace, the story builds to a satisfying conclusion. And with NASA building it's very own cargo blimp, this alternate future may yet come to pass.
