Wicked woman By Vincent Poirier Albert Savarus, a star lawyer from Paris, arrives in the insular small town of Besançon in the Franche-Compté region of France. He sets up his law practice but he cannot hope to shine or to seduce the local clergy, the town's bourgeois businessmen, or the region's aristocracy.Knowing he won't be invited to any of the salons, he assumes a simple lifestyle that makes it clear he's the one who cannot be approached. He goes to bed immediately after dinner and gets up shortly after midnight. He writes and thinks. He takes a few difficult cases and obtains spectacular wins for his clients.Besançon lacks a literary journal so Savarus starts one. He solicits writers and contributes his own works. Still, he maintains his frugal habits.Rosalie, the repressed but brilliant nineteen year old daughter of the staid Baron de Watteville, falls in love with the mysterious stranger who took up residence a few yards away from her family's home.Through her maid, herself in love with Savarus's butler, Rosalie intercepts Savarus's letters to Paris and learns why this brilliant man established himself in Besançon and what he proposes to achieve. She hopes to escape from the dull marriage her mother is planning for her and instead ride on Savarus's growing success. Will Rosalie help Savarus succeed or will he unwittingly fail unaware of her selfish machinations? An excellent lesson on how ends, however well intentioned, do not justify evil means.Vincent Poirier, Québec City

"Of all secret crimes..., the most disgraceful is that of ...reading a letter surreptitiously" By sally tarbox Wonderful tale set in the provincial town of Besancon, and focussing on the de Watteville family - the fiercely religious and independently wealthy wife, the ineffectual husband, who absents himself, spending his days working his lathe...and 19-year-old daughter, Rosalie. A colourless and insignificant young person, carefully brought up by Mama, so that 'at seventeen Rosalie had never read anything but the Lettres Edifiantes and some works on heraldry', she nonetheless has an unbending mind of her own, most particularly in her resolve never to marry the man her mother intends her for. When the intriguing Albert Savarus - a successful, but mysterious, lawyer and later newspaper editor - arrives in town, Rosalie hears of him at dinner parties and becomes obsessed with him. But her seemingly unimportant manoeuvres ('all the time she was pondering these machinations, the extraordinary girl was working slippers for her father with the most innocent air in the world') have a massive outcome...This was a wonderful read, both for the little moments of humour and the plot development.
