The Author's Craft, by Arnold Bennett

About the Author Enoch Arnold Bennett, the son of a solicitor, was born in Hanley, Staffordshire in 1867. He was educated locally and at London University, before working initially as a solicitor's clerk, but soon turned to writing popular serial fiction and editing a women's magazine. After the publication of his first novel, 'A Man from the North' in 1898 he became a professional writer and some of his best and most enduring and acclaimed work, including 'Anna of the Five Towns', 'The Old Wives' Tale', 'Clayhanger', 'The Card' and 'Hilda Lessways' followed over the next twelve years. Soon after the outbreak of the First World War, Bennett was invited to join the War Propaganda Bureau, concerned with finding ways of best promoting Britain's interests. He was in good company, as others who contributed to this effort included Conan Doyle, John Masefield, G. K. Chesterton, Sir Henry Newbolt, John Galsworthy, Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling, Gilbert Parker, G. M. Trevelyan and H. G. Wells. Bernard Shaw knew nothing of the Bureau, but attacked what he believed to be jingoistic articles and poems being produced by British writers. Bennett was the one chosen to defend their actions. He served on a War Memorial Committee at the invitation of the then Minister of Information, Lord Beaverbrook, and was also appointed director of British propaganda in France. His spells in Paris added to his reputation as a man of cosmopolitan and discerning tastes. After the War he inevitably returned to writing novels and also became a director of the 'New Statesman'. Bennett's great reputation is built upon the success of his novels and short stories set in the Potteries, an area of north Staffordshire that he recreated as the 'Five Towns'. 'Anna of the Five Towns' and 'The Old Wives' Tale' show the influence of Flaubert, Maupassant and Balzac as Bennett describes provincial life in great detail. Arnold Bennett is an important link between the English novel and European realism. He wrote several plays and lighter works such as 'The Grand Babylon Hotel' and 'The Card'. Arnold Bennett died in 1931.

Although he lived at the turn of the 20th Century, many of the things he learned as a working writer are still applicable in today's publishing world.

By Pen Silnink Bennett's writings grip the reader with an astounding sense of his giftedness and skill in his craft. Excited with inspiration, I eagerly read the short book, determined to learn if my ready insight was seed toward the book title's objective. So caught by Bennett's writing skill, I read the book to its end - through every expertly crafted sentence. Bennett drenches every sentence with his life perspective (psychology). In all its sublime parts, this book is a sudden and outrageous collision, well-depicted in the opening story. A frame-by-frame accounting of a puppy running into the road, being run over by a vehicle and killed (without a scratch), all watched by interested but vacuous humanity too quick to resume their tepid and shallow lives. Bennett unashamedly indoctrinates readers with his philosophy on life - blatant contempt for all facets of what he sees as tiny-minded human character, his zealot's impartation of that contempt saturating each sentence, I come away from this multipart work with the distinct conviction, his exquisite writing gift and skill are drowning in his own loss and sense of being dehumanized, no, run over with mortal bruises unseen by careless humanity. A friend told me I 'got' the book's intent. I don't think so. I can't imagine my review won't greatly offend lovers of Bennett's works. Have a care please. I respect his writing. To my horror, he models all he despises in humanity.

Writing Novels 3. Writing Plays 4. The Artist and the Public. The book is short, of about 130 pages. The drawback is the language it is written in; I found it a slow read, if not difficult. The writer does inform you and instruct you about how to and what to observe if you want to be a good writer. And then, he has genre-specific advice as well. And helpful advices at that. You may like to read books that are recently published (for example, Bird by Bird) so that you would feel you are talking to someone who lives in the same world. Among the older books on writing that I love is Dorothy Brande's Becoming a Writer. It is a must read, written in a lucid language.
