About the Author Steve Nadis is a graduate of Hampshire College and a Contributing Editor to Astronomy and Discover magazines. He has written or contributed to more than two dozen books, including The Shape of Inner Space and A History in Sum (which were also written with Shing-Tung Yau). Nadis has served as a staff researcher at the Union of Concerned Scientists, a science journalism fellow at MIT, and a consultant to the World Resources Institute, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Harvard Mathematics and Physics Departments, and WGBH/NOVA. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Shing-Tung Yau is the William Caspar Graustein Professor of Mathematics and Professor of Physics at Harvard University, where he has served on the faculty since 1987. He is the winner of the Fields Medal, the National Medal of Science, the Crafoord Prize, the Veblen Prize, the Wolf Prize, and a MacArthur Fellowship. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, Yau has received honorary degrees from ten universities. He is also the director of six mathematical institutes in China. Yau has written and edited more than twenty books and is the editor of numerous mathematics journals. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

By Amazon Customer This is a well-written account of the physics of particle accelerators -- both how they are built and what they do. It centers around the ambitious Chinese proposal to build a ``Great Collider'' with capabilities far beyond those of any existing machine. If this proposal goes ahead, China will gain leadership in particle physics for quite some time to come.S.-T. Yau is a highly distinguished mathematician who is interested in physics, as he explains in the preface, because of the way it sometimes sheds light on the mathematics that he does and sometimes supplies an unexpected arena in which this mathematics can be applied. (Steve Nadis is a writer and has collaborated with Yau on several books.) As Yau further explains in the preface, to maintain the vitality of physics requires fresh input from experiment. From this, as well as a passion for the scientific development of China, comes his interest in the Great Collider.

Nadis and Yau lead the reader through the history of particle physics, the incredible machines that have been built to expand our understanding of the universe, and even more magnificent instruments being planned. The authors do not shy away from the details of subatomic particles, and do so in an engaging fashion that is accessible to interested laypeople. The breadth of understanding of this vast field, and the ability to describe it coherently are impressive. The style is clear and direct, with gentle wit, and with reverence for the international group scientists who have contributed to this great endeavor.

It weaves together a general history of particle physics with an accessible discussion of the science. Now I actually know what the Higgs boson is and why its discovery was such a big deal. I also have a much clearer understanding of topics like dark matter and antimatter. The most amazing part was that the book was such a pleasure to read, even for non-scientist like me. Every time I put it down, I couldn’t wait to get back to it. Thanks, Steve Nadis and Shing-Tung Yau!

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

The Best Mystery Write EVER By Patricia Harrelson I read this on the recommendation of my 14 year old grandson who claims Chesterton is the best mystery writer EVER! My grandson just might be right. Clearly Chesterton is a highly intelligent story-crafter. This collection of short stories about Father Brown kept me awake and alert and ALWAYS surprised regarding the outcome. There was nothing formulaic or predictable in these stories. Father Brown is delightful in a Columbo fashion (perhaps the TV detective was modeled after him), and his sleuthing is remarkably unique. I loved Chesterton's use of language too. His sentences are long and luscious and his vocabulary makes reading a delicious experience. I must say, I'm quite happy to know that a 14 year old finds Chesterton so exceptional.

Worley The 12 stories herein can of course be found in THE COMPLETE FATHER BROWN, and THE ANNOTATED INNOCENCE OF FATHER BROWN. This is the first Brown collection, which introduces not only Father Brown himself but Flambeau, the daring thief. Father Brown worked on Flambeau during their early confrontations, and eventually persuaded him to give up his life of crime. He became Father Brown's friend and sometime sidekick, and appears in three-quarters of the stories herein, in one capacity or another."The Blue Cross" - The great detective Valentin knows that Flambeau the thief has selected a little English priest as his target, since the priest has been entrusted with a valuable cross set with sapphires. But when Valentin begins tracking the priest across the city, a very odd pattern of incidents begins to emerge."The Secret Garden" - Father Brown is a dinner guest in Valentin's home."The Queer Feet" - 'The Twelve True Fishermen', meeting for their annual fish dinner at a small, exclusive restaurant, saw the usual count of waiters - but one had died hours before! Father Brown (called in earlier for the waiter's dying confession and last rites) unravels a spectacular caper."The Flying Stars" - Flambeau's last crime (as noted in the 1st paragraph of the story), cited as an example of his love of artistically matching settings with crimes. His confrontation with Father Brown resonates nicely with the preceding story's metaphor of Brown having him on a line like a fish."The Invisible Man" - Locked-room mystery. The inventor was found murdered in his flat, but witnesses say that nobody could have gone past them without being seen."The Honour of Israel Gow" - This story actually takes place *after* "The Wrong Shape". But if he managed to catch the blacksmith's wife, it may well have been the death of him."The Eye of Apollo" - Locked-room mystery. He could craft landscapes, settings, and locations with vivid textures, and possessed a cunning knack that made the ordinary seem thoroughly outlandish and the peculiar rather tame. This collection of short mysteries aptly shows off his skill as a writer; whereas most authors would use an entire novel to build tension, cultivate atmosphere, and weave a complex mystery, Chesterton could do all that in a few brief pages - and at a much higher level of quality too! Reading this book is like reading twelve beautifully crafted novels in one, such is the quality.I won't spoil the stories for you; reading this book is a rewarding journey for the imagination, meeting many characters fantastic in their normalcy or surprisingly believable and realistic in their peculiarity, visiting locations stunningly brought to life with a writing skill that is second to none, and delving into mysterious events that are often confusing, complex, and entertaining for the brain. Don't pick this book up if you want some pedestrian tales; pick it up if you want first-class storytelling that will keep you both guessing and thinking.

Mr. Oliver is an old man whose hasty words years ago had driven away his only surviving child. His health and faculties are deteriorating, but when he finds a precious little girl abandoned outside his shop, he is more than willing to take her in. When he finds the note in her pocket identifying her as his granddaughter, he is anxious to do what he can for her, and is delighted at the thought of being reconciled with his daughter.Tony is an orphan who has been living wherever he can, and was captivated by Dolly, Mr. Oliver's granddaughter, when he saw her outside the shop. Even though he had nothing of his own, he volunteered to take care of her if Mr. Oliver should refuse to take her. Mr. Oliver gave him a place to sleep under a counter in his tiny shop, and Tony came every day to see little Dolly. He noticed that Mr. Oliver's eyesight and memory was failing, and he began to help him get his shop going in the morning, and remind him of necessary things. He especially liked to hear Mr. Oliver tell of his Master, the Lord Jesus. Tony had never heard of such a wonderful employer, and wondered if he could work for him sometime. When Mr. Oliver's sister came to visit, she was appalled that her grandniece was associating with a barefoot beggar, and sent Tony away, and he was alone in London again. We follow his fortunes, and see the workings of his heart, all in the care of the Lord Jesus Christ.The reader will be touched by the poignancy of the love these characters share for each other, and inspired by the simple devotion of Mr. Oliver to his Master. Hesba Stretton has written of similar situations and conditions to those of Charles Dickens, but while his works are dark and depressing, hers are serious, yet bright with hope. When Mr. Oliver takes his dying Dolly to the charity children's hospital, and is told there is no room for her, he cries, "Dear Lord, there's room for only seventy-five of Thy little lambs that are pining and wasting away in every dark street and alley like mine. Whatever can Thy people be thinking about? They've got their own dear little children, who are ill sometimes, spite of all their care. They can send for the doctor, and do all that's possible, never looking at the money it costs. But when they are well again they never think of the poor little ones who are sick and dying, with nobody to help them or care for them as I care for this little one. Oh, Lord, Lord! Let my little love live! Yet Thou knows what is best, and Thou'lt do what is best. Thou loves her more than I do."A book for young and old, this will touch the reader's heart, and may change his life.

Boden I am so glad this book has been reprinted so that many more people can have the joy of reading it.I read this book when I was a child. It belonged to my immigrant grandmother. I never forgot the experience, although the details of the book escaped my memory. I remembered that it touched my heart in an eternal way.As an adult, I was given the book as a gift from my brother, who found an out-of-print copy. As soon as I saw the color of the cover of the book, I knew instantly that it was THAT book! I opened up the book and read a short paragraph that brought tears to my eyes and answers to the question of why this book had such a life changing impact on my life. The book was a divinely positioned gift given to me, not just once in my life, but twice.I highly recommend the book to any child or adult who needs to hear a timeless story of love.

I would recommend it to anyone who, like me, still enjoys a story which doesn't concentrate, like so many of them today, on everything base and awful in mankind. I could not put my kindle down until I had finished reading it, late into the night. Unfortunately many of the books written today seem to consist only of violence and explicit sex with nothing even remotely romantic or uplifting about them. I would like to thank Amazon for the availability in the online shop of so many of the old authors no longer available in book stores, Readers, if you like to feel uplifted after you have finished a good book I would certainly urge you to read this story

About the Author B. M.(Bertha Muzzy) Bower (1871–1940), the first woman to make a career of writing popular westerns like Chip of the Flying U, lived on a ranch in Montana and knew from experience Val’s situation, her awakening and embrace of the unconventional. Originally published in 1912, Lonesome Land is an extraordinary novel, perhaps Bower’s best. She was decades ahead of her time in taking on the subjects of divorce and spouse abuse. Pam Houston is the author of Cowboys Are My Weakness: Stories, winner of the 1993 Western States Book Award. She lives in Colorado near the headwaters of the Rio Grande.

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Lonesome Land haunts By A Customer I read this book over twenty-five years ago in my mother's collection of books that she bought as a young adult. Of all my mother's books, this one remains a vivid impression. Val gains depths the reader would not expect from the first shallow impression. Her husband's alcoholism and moral weakness are hard subjects for the early-century audience that Bower handles with a verity not often encountered. Yet my deepest etched memory is the love between Val and the hard-working honest cowboy she shuns at the first; he is impressed by her bravery alone in the cabin and her willingness to work hard to make a home in a shack when she expected a solid house, he wants to help her, he watches her struggle and transform, he realizes her husband is not worthy of her and he wants her for himself. Eventually he loves her with the kind of love she needs. This I remember to this day. The unexpected knight who replaces the prince of soft gold; the princess who realizes the difference between glitter and iron. These archetypes B.M. Bower worked with long before "archetypes" became a catch-word. She was writing good stories, better than good stories, and she deserves to remain in print based on this book alone. (Although the later Flying U book about the young man who goes to the rodeo to prove he's as much of a hero as his "wild west" father and uncles were is also as good).

You are left with no conclusions to any of the story lines in this book. I was very disappointed that the book was just stopped like everything was wrapped up. It was not and to be left hanging with no conclusion is a perfect example of bad writing. I have read several books by this author and this is by far the worst one I have read. If you want to read a really good book by this author, read Chip Of The Flying U. That book was the reason I started reading this author.

Bower writes fun western adventures, usually, but not always, involving a young man and woman who fall in love amongst the savage splendor of life in the west. This book follows that pattern, beginning with the arrival of a young woman to a small town in order to marry her childhood sweetheart, who has moved west to start a ranch. During the intervening years, however, he has changed, and while coping with the hard, lonely life of a small ranch, the new wife must learn to cope with loneliness and disappointment. One of her few contacts with the outside world is a friend of her husband's whom she despises. Their relationship gradually changes as her husband's true character is slowly revealed to her. I truly enjoy Bower's novels, and Lonesome Land was a pleasure to read. It is tempting to give all of her books 5 stars, but some are definitely better than others.

The behavior of the Californian is a case in point.However, the behavior of governmental and regulatory authorities is covered in some detail, which is invaluable in understanding why the Titanic carried so few lifeboats.All in all, this report is worthwhile as a step for anyone seeking pertinent information, yet it is neither exhaustive or definitive. Perhaps it is best understood as a document of specific focus, the route of the ship, the decisions of her captain, the behavior of her crew, the integrity of her construction are where this report shines.The enormity of the Titanic disaster continues to haunt us to this day, continues to leave us with an unsatisfactory collection of facts, and continues to defy our attempts to put it to rest. Seen in this light, the British government report is a reflection of this state.

This is not a transcript of the testimony and evidence put before the inquiry. It is fine and informative for what it is, but anybody looking for the testimony and cross examination will not find it here.

I had no idea that the subject was so complex and feel much better informed now that I've finished reading the report. The report is an excellent place to begin if one wishes to learn more about the topic.

A good sea-story read By Andrew Ellis Marryat seems a bit quaint by modern standards, but the writing, grammar and punctuation are much better than in many modern books. "Poor Jack" seems a bit melodramatic, but the book is still a good read. Free, since it's in public domain.

This was in the latter category, Typical Victorian novel - clear hero, faces many difficulties, helped by friends, all well in end and hero gets girl and money.
