The story has a bit of everything that makes for a compelling read, including some totally unexpected surprises. The author gets bogged down for a half dozen pages in the beginning discussing family relationships in order to set the stage. Don't worry about his attention to detail in that part. Keep going and soon enough the key characters will become totally familiar to you. From then on, it's a wonderful story, very pleasant to read. As always, Balzac the narrator, offers cutting insight into human behavior in the course of telling the tale. It's fascinating to learn how little has changed over the last 150 years when it comes to human nature. The study of the old miser and his pretty young ward who rules him with an iron hand is a riot. Who among us has never known an old man with money making a fool of himself over a young girl gold digger? Or a widow fawning over her neer-do-well son. Or a moral and talented artistic son neglected in lieu of his brazen, dishonest soldier brother. You almost want to cry out, "No! Don't fall for it!"
