About the Author Steve Nadis is a graduate of Hampshire College and a Contributing Editor to Astronomy and Discover magazines. He has written or contributed to more than two dozen books, including The Shape of Inner Space and A History in Sum (which were also written with Shing-Tung Yau). Nadis has served as a staff researcher at the Union of Concerned Scientists, a science journalism fellow at MIT, and a consultant to the World Resources Institute, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Harvard Mathematics and Physics Departments, and WGBH/NOVA. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Shing-Tung Yau is the William Caspar Graustein Professor of Mathematics and Professor of Physics at Harvard University, where he has served on the faculty since 1987. He is the winner of the Fields Medal, the National Medal of Science, the Crafoord Prize, the Veblen Prize, the Wolf Prize, and a MacArthur Fellowship. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, Yau has received honorary degrees from ten universities. He is also the director of six mathematical institutes in China. Yau has written and edited more than twenty books and is the editor of numerous mathematics journals. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

By Amazon Customer This is a well-written account of the physics of particle accelerators -- both how they are built and what they do. It centers around the ambitious Chinese proposal to build a ``Great Collider'' with capabilities far beyond those of any existing machine. If this proposal goes ahead, China will gain leadership in particle physics for quite some time to come.S.-T. Yau is a highly distinguished mathematician who is interested in physics, as he explains in the preface, because of the way it sometimes sheds light on the mathematics that he does and sometimes supplies an unexpected arena in which this mathematics can be applied. (Steve Nadis is a writer and has collaborated with Yau on several books.) As Yau further explains in the preface, to maintain the vitality of physics requires fresh input from experiment. From this, as well as a passion for the scientific development of China, comes his interest in the Great Collider.

Nadis and Yau lead the reader through the history of particle physics, the incredible machines that have been built to expand our understanding of the universe, and even more magnificent instruments being planned. The authors do not shy away from the details of subatomic particles, and do so in an engaging fashion that is accessible to interested laypeople. The breadth of understanding of this vast field, and the ability to describe it coherently are impressive. The style is clear and direct, with gentle wit, and with reverence for the international group scientists who have contributed to this great endeavor.

It weaves together a general history of particle physics with an accessible discussion of the science. Now I actually know what the Higgs boson is and why its discovery was such a big deal. I also have a much clearer understanding of topics like dark matter and antimatter. The most amazing part was that the book was such a pleasure to read, even for non-scientist like me. Every time I put it down, I couldn’t wait to get back to it. Thanks, Steve Nadis and Shing-Tung Yau!
