It furthers the story of Richard Hunter, now a bookkeeper for a wealthy merchant, and Henry Fosdick, a clerk in a hat and cap store and tutor of Dick. The story is one of adventures (learning to interact with people at his boarding house, attending Ida Greyson's party, acquiring real estate,) and misadventures (with his enemies, Rosewell Crawford and Micky Maguire). This book is just as good as Ragged Dick and the third in the series, "Mark the Matchboy," and it's too bad it's not more readily available to the public.

How to convert almost any workplace into a "hunting ground" for breakthrough ideas By Robert Morris In his latest book, Hunting in a Farmer's World: Celebrating the Mind of an Entrepreneur, John Dini makes brilliant use of the two core metaphors, the hunter and the farmer, when sharing his thoughts about two quite different mindsets. The business world needs hunters but at also needs farmers. In fact, Dini suggests -- and I agree -- that, during the last four centuries and especially during the last two, the business world has been a farmer's world. That is to say, executives tend to be managers rather than entrepreneurs, focused primarily on increasing the efficiency and profitability of the status quo.As Jeremy Gutsche suggests in Better and Faster, hunters need to complete three steps to formulate disruptive ideas: understand the essential conflict between hunters and farmers, explore six patterns of opportunity (i.e. convergence, redirection, reduction, acceleration, cyclicality, and divergence), and then "capture" the idea that can lead to eventual success. He explains how and why farmers can be trapped by complacency, defending the status quo while hostage to what Jim O'Toole aptly characterizes as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom." They are vulnerable to hunters who are insatiable, curious, and willing to destroy. These are among the dozens of passages of greatest interest and value to me, also listed to suggest the scope of Gutsche's coverage:o Awakening Your Inner Hunter (Pages 14-16)o Hidden Secrets, Starting Fresh, and a Billionaire Author (40-43)o Choice, Challenge, and the Underdog (46-49)o An All-Conscious Search (52-54)o Chaos Creates Opportunity (64-67)o The Shotgun Approach (73-76)o Convergence: At Trend Setter, and, Sub -Patterns (80-84)o Divergence (85-87)o Lawsuits, Rumors, and Jet Racing (93-98)o Beautiful People Only (98-102)o Sub-Patterns of Divergence (105-108)o From "Bling Bling" to Boring (117-120)o Getting Nasty (120-123o Sub-Patterns of Cyclicality (127-129)o Manufacturing Desire (138-142)o Sub-Patterns of Redirection (142-145)o The Power of a Niche (153-155)o Sub-Patterns of Reduction (160-162)o Acceleration: Three Rounds (174-179)o Let's Create a Business (190-196)What Gutsche offers is a cohesive, comprehensive, cost-effective system by which to generate, evaluate, reject or refine, and then implement what can prove to be breakthrough ideas. The business world needs both farmers and hunters. Members of each group can make unique and substantial contributions to the success of the given enterprise. Farmers must avoid the traps of complacency, repetitiousness, and protectionism and hunters must avoid the traps of excessive satiability, curiosity, and destruction. The challenge for business leaders is two-fold: to get the best out of each group, and, to sustain an appropriate balance in their collaboration.Just as there are several different "roads to Rome," it is also true that there are several different patterns or approaches to opportunities for success. Gutsche focuses on six (previously identified), any one of which can be very effective. Extending the farm metaphor a bit, let's view a farm as a company, as indeed all of them are: it needs what most of its workers produce to be profitable and remain in operation. However, it also needs other workers who constantly hunt for other acreage to acquire, and, for better ways -- methods as well as equipment -- to treat soil, plan crops, protect them, harvest them, and then go to market with them. In fact, everyone involved should have a hunter's mindset. Whatever their size and nature may be, all organizations need to continuously generate lots of ideas at all levels and in all areas of operation.A few years ago, I was retained by a Fortune 50 company to design what would become a "suggestion box" on its intranet. Initially, all employees were invited to post their suggestions: "How can we get more done in less time, do it better, and save money?" Later, the invitation was extended to customers and suppliers: "What can we can we do that would make it easier for you to do business with us?" Soon, on average, more than 500 suggestions were submitted each week and the total reached about one thousand until interest slowly evaporated. Several dozen suggestions led to substantial improvements and were generously rewarded. Of much greater importance, the workplace became what Gutsche characterizes as a "hunting ground." Whereas better thinking was previously conducted outside the suggestion box, over time the workplace replaced that box.Good ideas can be found almost everywhere but, with rare exception, great ideas are the result of a collaborative process, a modern day equivalent of the alchemy that was so widespread during the Middle Ages. I commend Jeremy Gutsche on the wealth of in formation, insights, and counsel he provides. Just about all business leaders need to convert their workplace into a "hunting ground" can be found in his book. Bravo!

The narrative was well-written and easy to read, structured into six big ideas (patterns) of innovation. The content was varied and surprising, with stories ranging from startup internet companies to his own journey as an entrepreneur. Each chapter ends with a recap of key points and takeaways, providing a helpful structure and reference point.Throughout the work, Gutsche shares really cool stories that are fresh and new. I loved learning about Dave's "Killer" bread, and the insights that a former meth addict and inmate has on innovation. Or the guy who got dumped by his fiancee and used that as the inspiration to launch a multi-million dollar business. The examples range from big company to startups, a few familiar stories with fresh twists, followed by many excited breakthrough I'd never heard before. I found myself having great conversation with my wife after being armed with many of the cool examples and stories from the book.Highly recommend to aspiring entrepreneur, senior executives, up-and-comer managers, non-profit leaders, or anyone else that has set out to make a real impact in the world. This important book will help you see your work in a new way, and help you unlock your best thinking.

I feel like that most of the time. This book is for people with the entrepreneurial bug that are looking for their next big idea but don't know where to find it. The author teaches his readers how to look at history, trends, cycles, and other variables to work through ideas and come up with something successful. The heavy use of stories helped me see how the principles he teaches can be applied in real life.I really, really liked this book. It helped me to see patterns in successful businesses and think of ways to apply those same ideas to my own ventures. The only downside is that the vast majority of the examples given were about big brands and corporations. I had hoped for more small business examples (there were a few), but I really enjoyed it, regardless. The author has some wonderful advice to offer the reader. Anyone interested in starting their own venture would benefit from reading this book. I would also suggest taking advantage of the author's website (www.trendhunter.com). It's a fantastic resource for finding ideas are popular now and learning where the market is going.Source: I received a copy of this book from the Blogging for Books program in exchange for an honest review.

The spectacular legacy and importance of early American cartographers.

Historians of the Revolutionary War in America have been fortunate in their resources: few wars in history have such a rich literary and cartographic heritage. The high skills of the surveyors, artists, and engravers who delineated the topography and fields of battle allow us to observe the unfolding of events that ultimately defined the United States.

When warfare erupted between Britain and her colonists in 1775, maps provided graphic news about military matters. A number of the best examples are reproduced here, including some from the personal collections of King George III, the Duke of Northumberland, and the Marquis de Lafayette. Other maps from institutional and private collections are being published for the first time. In all, sixty significant and beautiful cartographic works from 1755 to 1783 illustrate this intriguing era.

Most books about the Revolution begin with Lexington and Concord and progress to the British surrender at Yorktown, but in this rich collection the authors lay the groundwork for the war by also taking into account key events of the antecedent conflict. The seeds of revolution were planted during the French and Indian War (1755–1763), and it was then that a good number of the participants, both British and rebel, cut their teeth. George Washington took his first command during this war, alongside the future British commanding General Thomas Gage.

At the Treaty of Paris, the French and Indian War ended, and King George III gained clear title to more territory than had ever been exchanged in any other war before or since. The British military employed its best-trained artists and engineers to map the richest prize in its Empire. They would need those maps for the fratricidal war that would begin twelve years later. Their maps and many others make up the contents of this fascinating and beautiful book.

30 of 30 people found the following review helpful. A Stunning Book Inside and Out By Daniel W. Pyle This collection of antique maps and concise commentary is visually stunning and beautifully written. At a time when readers require reasons to purchase a book in hardcover rather than in digital form, this volume offers many. First of all, it is a very elegant work. Laura Lindgren, the jacket designer, uses an 18th C. full-color military map of New York City for the cover, the spaces for modern text provided by an artful fading of the map. The names of the authors are in the upper right, and the title is boldly printed across the center. The dust jacket is heavy polished paper. A ribbon of map (this time of the Fort George Area) tops the back cover above three reviews on burgundy background. One of these endorsements is by Ric Burns, the documentarian. The book is oversize in format, 12X13 inches, but is slender at 150 pages, more than enough space to cover thirty years of revolutionary history starting with the French and Indian War. The maps included have been rarely or never published before.Unlike many recent historical atlases, the focus in this volume is always on the maps. While the authors include many illustrations, they are always closely related to the maps. For example, the Anti-Gallican Map of North America (1755), published by a British anti-French club, is accompanied by an illustration of the badge of the President of the organization. It is a gorgeous rococo jewel which depicts St. George impaling the French flag with his spear. The map and badge clearly illustrate the British hostility to the French just before the onset of war.One of the reviewers on the cover, Jane Kamensky, notes that "the battle for (and against) American independence unfolded in space as well as in time." This idea provides the key rationale for presenting history in the context of contemporary maps. For example, the section on Braddock's March notes that General Braddock planned to sail up the Potomac, and then travel from Fort Cumberland (Modern Cumberland, MD) to Fort Duquesne (modern Pittsburgh). Maps indicated that the Potomac voyage would be 15 miles and the trip by land would be 30 miles. The Potomac is not navigable above the Great Falls just above the present site of Washington, D.C. The distance to Cumberland by land is about 140 miles with another 100 miles over mountainous terrain to get to Fort Duquenes. Braddock was soon complaining about the unexpected distance and harsh landscape. This cartographic distortion of space had significant effect on the course of history, and contributed to the British defeat, the death of General Braddock, and the near death of George Washington. The authors, Richard Brown and Paul Cohen are collectors and dealers in antique maps and are not historians. However, the text is correct and accurate, and the maps they've found and published here are expertly chosen to illustrate the history. While there are many who could effectively condense the history of Revolutionary America, the authors used their expertise to scour disparate archives and collections, and to winnow down their choices to the maps that perfectly illustrate the key historical events covered in this volume. This book will go on my coffee table, not only because it is beautiful but also because I am certain I will want to frequently revisit these maps.

Anyone who loves maps and history will enjoy the book. The provenance of the maps is almost as fascinating as the history they tell. To look at these maps is to see history as the contemporary map makers saw it -- an eerie and rewarding experience.

He really likes Revolution because it provides the visuals, maps and pictures, for the texts he is reading. It serves as a companion reader for all the historical biographies in his collection.

"[...] But, after all, what is a ghost? What do we mean by this? Where do ghosts live, and how? What do they do with themselves? How do they manifest? Why do they return? These are some of the questions which the average man asks himself—unless he totally disbelieves in them. Most men, it is true, disbelieve in ghosts—unless they have had some experience to convince them to the contrary. Yet, after all, why should they? As Mr. W. T. Stead once remarked: “Real Ghost Stories! How can there be real ghost stories when there are no real ghosts? “But are there no real ghosts? You may not have seen one, but it does not follow that therefore they do not exist. How many of us have seen the microbe[...]".

There are may versions of this book out there because it is out of copyright, but this version has new accounts of ghost stories. I don't know what the previous reviewer is talking about, she must have bought a different version of the book because the one printed by Dodo Publishing is perfectly edited and restored. Just click on search inside and you will see the formatting, which is the purpose of creating a revised edition of a classic. (I can only speak for the Dodo Publishing edition). Well worth it.

The stories are familiar yet well categorized. The tales reflect well in today's world. All said that makes a usefully book for advancing the understanding of paranormal activity.

The Princess and the Goblin, by George MacDonald

Amazon.com Review As always with George MacDonald, everything here is more than meets the eye: this in fact is MacDonald's grace-filled vision of the world. Said to be one of J.R.R. Tolkien's childhood favorites, The Princess and the Goblin is the story of the young Princess Irene, her good friend Curdie--a minor's son--and Irene's mysterious and beautiful great great grandmother, who lives in a secret room at the top of the castle stairs. Filled with images of dungeons and goblins, mysterious fires, burning roses, and a thread so fine as to be invisible and yet--like prayer--strong enough to lead the Princess back home to her grandmother's arms, this is a story of Curdie's slow realization that sometimes, as the princess tells him, "you must believe without seeing." Simple enough for reading aloud to a child (as I've done myself more than once with my daughter), it's rich enough to repay endless delighted readings for the adult. --Doug Thorpe

I agree with Lewis' assessment when it comes to "The Princess and the Goblin." Anyone who reads this book with profit by having done so.First, and perhaps most importantly "The Princess and the Goblin" is a delightful story. There is a lot of the "just plain fun reading" stuff going on in this story. There is also a lot more.MacDonald has buried a lot of treasures within the cave walls of his story. If the reader looks carefully as they follow the fates of Irene and Curdie, they will find these jewels just sitting there shining in the darkness, ready to be mined. There are nuggets of wisdom to be gained here in the dialogue, the narration, and in the overall arch of the story.More than this, MacDonald's story features the best of what was Romantic literature and blends it with the greatest characteristics of fairy tales--then he turns convention on its head. Some examples:-Whereas in fairy tales wisdom is associated with the old and knowledgeable, wisdom is here associated with innocence.-While in traditional tales, it is the hero who saves the princess, here the princess must rescue the hero.-Fans of modern fantasy may be used to Providential Guidance being related to male literary figures such as Tolkien's Gandalf, Lewis' Aslan. Here the figure is Feminine--the Grandmother. In the process of playing off of and twisting traditional Romantic literature and fairy tales MacDonald manages to transcend both genres and create a truly original work of wonder.I recommend the "Princess and the Goblin" most highly. Get it today. Just be careful that you don't pick up an abridgment--they tend to rip out the heart of the tale in an attempt to make the text more modern (neutered).

Cared for by her nurse Lootie, she lives in a mountain farmhouse while her father rules over the region from a mountain top castle. The local folk work as miners but are beset by the Goblins who inhabit the underground. Irene is saved from the Goblins by Curdie, a thirteen year old miner, and she in turn saves him. The whole thing is told in a pleasant conversational style and is filled with humor, word games, magic, derring-do, and pure wonderment.George MacDonald, a Congregational minister turned novelist, who seems nearly forgotten now, was one of the seminal figures in the development of Fantasy. His influence on other Fantasy authors is obvious, he was a childhood favorite of JRR Tolkein, who especially liked this book, and C.S. Lewis named him one of his favorite authors. His own stories draw on many of the themes and characters of classical European fairy tales. But where they were often merely horrific and meaningless, MacDonald adds a layer of Christian allegory. Thus, Irene and Curdie are eventually saved by a thread so slender that you can't even see it, but which leads them back to safety, teaching Curdie that you sometimes have to believe in things that you can't see.The book would be interesting simply as a touchstone of modern fiction, but it stands up well on its own and will delight adults and children alike.GRADE: A

Dover Edition is not Unabridged, as marked on cover By Unity Dienes I have two copies of this wonderful book in front of me...the Dover Juvenile Classics edition and the beautiful hardcover by Macmillan. Not only does the Dover edition omit all the sweet pictures, but right from the very first page it omits a sweet exchange between "Mr. Author" and an unnamed interlocutor--reminiscent of the story interruptions by the "real" Christopher Robin and the narrator of the Pooh stories. If something has obviously been cut out right from the first page, I'd bet other passages have been cut out, too. Perhaps this is unabridged from some version of the story, but it is definitely not the most complete text available. Stick to the hardcover or deluxe versions of the text for the real thing.

"[...]of the rainbow on the flower-scented breezes. But over all this beauty, over the luxuriance of vegetation, over the softness of the tropical air, over the splendour of the sunshine, over the perfume of the flowers, Pestilence has cast her fatal miasmas, and, like the sword of Damocles, the yellow fever hangs threateningly over the head of those who dwell among these lovely scenes. Nature, however, is not to be blamed for this drawback to one of her most charming creations. With better drainage and cleanlier habits amongst its population, there is no reason why Rio should not be a perfectly healthy place. To exorcise the demon who annually scourges its people, no acquaintance with the black art is necessary. The scrubbing-brush and Windsor soap—"this only is the witchcraft need be used." Four days after leaving Rio we arrived at Monte Video, but as we came from an[...]".

Lady Florence Dixie sets off on an adventure at a time when women simply did not take off to distant lands, in this case southern Patagonia, even with large support groups, just to see what there is to see. She starts off with all the trappings of a fine English lady, including all the necessaries for afternoon tea, and sees some of the most spectacular scenery that southern Chile and Argentina have to offer. She creates her own names for the geological features she sees and makes many keen observations. Over time, her team encounters some rather serious difficulties. By the end, the team bears no resemblance to the well-outfitted, confident, clean and polished group that left. A wonderful story of a strong lady, unknown land and culture, extreme beauty seen seen the first time by Western eyes, creativity, and a flair for story-telling that will have you laughing out loud and wanting to share the story with all your friends. The fact that this book was not really published, but rather photocopied and then bound, gives it extra charm. Highly recommended.

By Edwin Paynter Bought the book for an idea about what we might see this November from a source that had no reason to fudge what she saw. The story of her trip with friends, relatives and guides was interesting. It could have used more references to specific locations, but since it was written in the late 1800's, not finding many should not have been a surprise. The early date of her trip means the descriptions away from the few cities of the time were almost all of places that foreigners had never seen. There were many descriptions of hunting guanaco, ostriches, various birds and even pumas. For them this was essential as that is how they survived their adventure. The book also showed how callous these travelers (and others of their time and privilege) were about wild life. One scene describes shooting a condor from high up pretty much only because they wanted to see if they could!I thick what I read will arm me with some meaningful questions to ask about how things used to be while we are travelling in Patagonia.

She was quite the adventuress, hunter, and rider. She writes with humor and with wonderful descriptions of the adventures she and her companions have. They make living on ostrich and guanaco sound almost tolerable. A really fun read.

"[...] “‘Fortunately it was my back that had suffered injury from the mud. I gave one look to see who was behind me. There was no one but an old man in a wheel chair and a couple of spoons. They were so busy beaming on each other that I was a blank to them. I made a dash for the side entrance to the hotel and caught the elevator going up. I went with it. Thus ends the tale of Jeremiah’s fateful walk. Thus ends my news also. When you hear from me again, it will probably be in person. I shall hit the trail for Sanford, first chance I have. I must stop now and go to dinner. I send you the faithful devotion of a loyal Lookout. That is no mean little dab of affection. Remember me to your mother and pat Ruffle for me. Now that I’m ending this letter, I can think of a lot of things to tell you. Oh, well, I’ll write ’em another day or else say ’em. “‘Lovingly your friend, “‘Jerry Macy.’”[...]".

Great reads without all of today's garbage verbiage. They are centered around school girls in the 1920's.
