"[...]of the rainbow on the flower-scented breezes. But over all this beauty, over the luxuriance of vegetation, over the softness of the tropical air, over the splendour of the sunshine, over the perfume of the flowers, Pestilence has cast her fatal miasmas, and, like the sword of Damocles, the yellow fever hangs threateningly over the head of those who dwell among these lovely scenes. Nature, however, is not to be blamed for this drawback to one of her most charming creations. With better drainage and cleanlier habits amongst its population, there is no reason why Rio should not be a perfectly healthy place. To exorcise the demon who annually scourges its people, no acquaintance with the black art is necessary. The scrubbing-brush and Windsor soap—"this only is the witchcraft need be used." Four days after leaving Rio we arrived at Monte Video, but as we came from an[...]".

Lady Florence Dixie sets off on an adventure at a time when women simply did not take off to distant lands, in this case southern Patagonia, even with large support groups, just to see what there is to see. She starts off with all the trappings of a fine English lady, including all the necessaries for afternoon tea, and sees some of the most spectacular scenery that southern Chile and Argentina have to offer. She creates her own names for the geological features she sees and makes many keen observations. Over time, her team encounters some rather serious difficulties. By the end, the team bears no resemblance to the well-outfitted, confident, clean and polished group that left. A wonderful story of a strong lady, unknown land and culture, extreme beauty seen seen the first time by Western eyes, creativity, and a flair for story-telling that will have you laughing out loud and wanting to share the story with all your friends. The fact that this book was not really published, but rather photocopied and then bound, gives it extra charm. Highly recommended.

By Edwin Paynter Bought the book for an idea about what we might see this November from a source that had no reason to fudge what she saw. The story of her trip with friends, relatives and guides was interesting. It could have used more references to specific locations, but since it was written in the late 1800's, not finding many should not have been a surprise. The early date of her trip means the descriptions away from the few cities of the time were almost all of places that foreigners had never seen. There were many descriptions of hunting guanaco, ostriches, various birds and even pumas. For them this was essential as that is how they survived their adventure. The book also showed how callous these travelers (and others of their time and privilege) were about wild life. One scene describes shooting a condor from high up pretty much only because they wanted to see if they could!I thick what I read will arm me with some meaningful questions to ask about how things used to be while we are travelling in Patagonia.

She was quite the adventuress, hunter, and rider. She writes with humor and with wonderful descriptions of the adventures she and her companions have. They make living on ostrich and guanaco sound almost tolerable. A really fun read.
