"[...]a fond mother because she insisted on having her children with her, under her thumb, marking their devotion as a prisoner marks time with his feet, stupidly, shufflingly, advancing not a step. Sometimes Sophy the clear-eyed and level-headed, seeing this state of affairs, tried to stop it. "You expect too much of your husband and children," she said one day, bluntly, to her sister. "I!" Flora's dimpled hands had flown to her breast like a wounded thing. "I! You're crazy! There isn't a more devoted wife and mother in the world. That's the trouble. I love them too much." "Well, then," grimly, "stop it for a change. That's half Eugene's nervousness—your fussing over him. He's eighteen. Give him a chance. You're weakening him. And stop dinning that society stuff into Adele's ears. She's[...]".

I enjoyed some stories more than others but overall, most held my interest. I confess to skimming parts of two. This is my first Edna Ferber book and I can honestly say she is a good writer. I wonder if I would enjoy her full length novels more, though? It's hard to write a completely satisfying story in the space of ten or twenty pages. You just get invested in the characters and its over. But it was a good taste of what Edna Ferber can do, so I'm glad I read it,Good news is, most of her short story compilations are public domain and free on Kindle and her full length novels are available to borrow off Openlibrary.org.CONTENT: G

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating, suspenseful, compelling short stories By Ruellia These stories are fabulous. Ferber presents a whole world of small town Wisconsin and adjoining states where she explores the clash between the older generation steeped in thrift, endless toil, caution, and fear for the future and the younger generation expecting comfort and abundance, revelling in consumer goods, and unwilling to endlessly clean and scrimp and save, resisting the fear and the caution their elders inculcate. She also presents class and ethnic barriers and how they wound people and damage their life chances. When she addresses the German Jewish milieu that she herself came from she seems to go deeper and to be more mordant. She can write beautiful prose when she wants to, but sometimes she veers into the brash post World War I style that revels in colloquialisms and advertising slang, and which verges on the smart alecky. She has the art of subtle and compelling description, which she manages to infuse with suspense. She knows how to get you to care about a character and to worry about her or him just by presenting, well before the action starts. It is extremely hard to stop reading and I stayed up way too late last night rereading Old Lady Mandle, which was just as hard to stop reading the second time as the first.Do yourself a big favor and download Half-Portions!

He lived most of his life one step from his creditors: his house in Paris even had a special exit for avoiding them. CESAR BIROTTEAU is the story of an honest perfumer who is done in by the smarmy du Tillet, a former employee whom he had fired for embezzlement, who works in secret to take his revenge. Birotteau is lured into overextending himself and falls hard. True to his fascination with money and its epedemiology, Balzac delves into the guts of this bankruptcy and shows you all the forces at work to destroy an innocent man. This time, the innocent man prevails. Thanks to the help of Anselme Popinot, a brilliant young marketer in love with his daughter, Birotteau is able to pay back every cent, winning honor for himself after his life appeared to be all but over. This is one of Balzac's greatest novels. Birotteau is an honorable gentleman of the old school, a bit obtuse perhaps, but out of his depth among the wild speculations of the reign of Charles X. Watching these processes ensnare him is repellingly fascinating -- and Balzac spares us nothing.

Fans of the original bon vivant will recoil in entertainment to the slow financial trainwreck of the (previously) shrewd businessman and military hero Cesar Birotteau. This novel showcases Balzac's familiarity with law and bankruptcy law and shines a light into the dark corners of finance, banking, and speculation during the dawn of the nineteenth century in France. This is another great act in the human comedy.

When I started my own company in late 2013 my goal was to provide affordable consumer electronics to customers that don’t have a buying office in Asia and customers that do not import by themselves. Before I started my own company I was working with large retailers and they all had their import processes in place. But my target customers with my own company were not these retailers. My target customers were people with small businesses or online shops and wholesalers that would like to get things directly from the source at a great price. In the first few months I felt that many of my new customers were uneducated or unaware about importing procedures and many didn’t know the advantages and disadvantages. So instead of explaining everything in detail in every email I decided to make a guide that they could use every day. What started out as a few pages quickly turned into a book. To be exact it’s the book that you are reading today. I call it my Import Bible. I have helped many customers and buyers all over the world with this e-book and many tell me that this information has helped them a great deal to take their business to the next level. For example, I had a customer from Spain. He was selling small quantities of product that he bought from importers in Spain with little profit on Ebay. He was looking for a way to grow his business but had no idea about the import process. When I started to work with him in March 2014 he had a total profit of 800EUR a month through his EbayEbay sales. As of today, because of my help, he is one of the top-sellers on Ebay with a profit of over 50,000EUROS. We will show you how to turn an investment of 10,000USD into 33,000USD PROFIT! With this book I want to help you to have the same success as he did with just a couple of months of hard work. Yes, hard work. Don’t let the title of this book fool you. To take your ideas or business a step forward takes a lot of hard work. This book is also a great tool for you as a general guide and introduction to importing. There are a few chapters that may not apply to you. I recommend reading them anyway and then deciding for yourself whether to apply these processes or not. I hope you enjoy reading this book and I hope it will help you the same way it has helped many others. Here are the Chapters of this book: Chapter 1) About the Author Chapter 2) How it all started and what this E-book is about Chapter 3) About China Chapter 4) Why you should import Chapter 5) The 6-step Import process Chapter 6) How to find the right product Chapter 7) Validate your product idea Chapter 8) Ways to Product Sourcing Chapter 9) Alibaba & Global Sources Chapter 10) Ordering samples Chapter 11) Testing your samples Chapter 12) General product requirements Chapter 13) OEM/ODM products Chapter 14) Payment & Delivery terms Chapter 15) How to build a relationship with manufactures Chapter 16) Hiring a Sourcing company Chapter 17) Pro & Con’s of drop shipping (e.g. Aliexpress & EBay) Chapter 18) Patents & copies Chapter 19) Calculate your costs Chapter 20) Contact a logistics provider and get a quote Chapter 21) Contact a Third-party Inspection company Chapter 22) Create an internal form to follow up your order Chapter 23) Things you should do before placing an Order Chapter 24) Packing & labelling Chapter 25) Minimum Order Quantities (MOQ) Chapter 26) Negotiation Chapter 27) Payment options Chapter 28) Placing the order-The Essentials Chapter 29) Receiving your Pro-forma Invoice (PI) Chapter 30) Monitoring your Order Chapter 31) Arranging the Inspection Chapter 32) Logistics-Getting your order Chapter 33) Receiving your order Chapter 34) Claims & Compensation Chapter 35) Selling your products (Ebay & Amazon)

Better than the other crap out there By Steven Schnarr At first I had doubts, as the introduction to this book sounds more like a sales pitch rather than an entrepreneurial guide. I believe this book was released as a sort of promo for their website/class. But with that said, there is no better guide for China to US import.I'm a beginner importer with great ideas and little experience. I had a great product, but I didn't know how to get it to North America. So I downloaded the top Chinese import books and did my research. Most of the books I downloaded were worthless. In particular, one book called, "Importing From China Easily and Successfully," was a complete waste of time. Other books were about finding investors and were irrelevant. If you are already experienced and want to learn more, this book isn't for you. But as a beginner, this book taught me more than anything else. I still reference it for advice. If you are a beginner importer, and you want to learn the nuts and bolts of importing, read this book.

I have dipped my toe into I/E a couple of times but been overwhelmed by all of the moving parts. The author breaks it down nicely & then backs it up with real experience. Well Done.

Haunted Places in England, by Elliott O'Donnell

About the Author Elliott O'Donnell (27 February 1872 - 8 May 1965) was an author known primarily for his books about ghosts. He was said to have seen a ghost when he was five years of age, and to have also been strangled by a mysterious phantom in Dublin. He was born in Clifton, Bristol, England, the son of an Irishman, Reverend Henry O’Donnell, who later travelled to Abyssinia while awaiting preferment to a new parish and was attacked by a gang, robbed and murdered. Elliott O'Donnell was educated at Clifton College in Bristol, England, and later at Queen's Service Academy, Dublin, Ireland. After originally intending to take his entry exams at Sandhurst with a view to joining the Royal Irish Constabulary, he later became a ghost hunter, but first travelled in America, working on a range in Oregon and becoming a policeman during the Chicago Railway Strike of 1894. Returning to England, he worked as a schoolmaster and trained for the theatre. He served in the British army in World War I, and later acted on stage and in movies. His first book, written in his spare time, was a psychic thriller For Satan's Sake (1904). From this point onward, he became a writer, specializing in true stories of ghosts and hauntings, which were immensely popular. He became known as an authority on the supernatural and was called upon as a ghost hunter. He also lectured and broadcast (radio and television) on the paranormal in Britain and the United States. On 8 May 1965, he died aged 93 at the Grosvenor Nursing Home, Clevedon, North Somerset, England.

Farthest North, by Fridtjof Nansen

Amazon.com Review The Modern Library has unearthed a classic. The long out-of-print Farthest North, one of the first titles in the library's Exploration series, recounts Dr. Fridtjof Nansen's epic 1893 pursuit of the North Pole. Like Jon Krakauer, the series' editor, Nansen was the chronicler of one his age's most sensational adventures. But he was also much more: statesman and explorer, scientist and sex symbol, Nansen's singular character and remarkable spirit demand attention and respect. It's hard to fathom how a story with such an alluring hero was forgotten in the first place.

The good doctor entered the limelight after his landmark first crossing of Greenland in 1888. Shortly after, he concocted a brilliant (or lunatic, depending on whom you asked) scheme to conquer the pole. He and a small crew would freeze a specially designed boat in the ice and drift with the Arctic current, which he believed would carry him from the coast of Siberia northwest to the pole. In mid-voyage, he realized that the current would not carry him far enough. Undaunted, he and a companion set out across the ice with a dogsled. Nansen was left for dead, but when he stumbled upon another exploration team more than a year later--having reached farther north than anyone before him--he returned to Norway an international sensation.

This book, the chronicle of that journey, was hurriedly written to capitalize on that sensation. Penned in only two months, it lacks literary polish, but Nansen's eye for detail and indomitable spirit shine through. Because he wrote while still thawing from his adventures, his story has an exciting immediacy, one that the passing of a century has done little to diminish. As a historical document, as an epic adventure, and as a revival of a worthy hero long forgotten, Farthest North is a tale well worth remembering. --Andrew Nieland

Review "Nansen was the Chuck Yeager of polar exploration."—The New York Times Book ReviewIn 1893 Fridtjof Nansen set sail for the North Pole in the Fram, a ship specially designed to be frozen into the polar ice cap, withstand its crush-ing pressures, and travel north with the sea's drift. Experts said that such a ship couldn't be built and that the mission was tantamount to suicide. Farthest North, first published in 1897 to great popular appeal, is the stirring first-person account of the Fram and her historic voyage. Nansen tells of his expedition's struggle against snowdrifts, ice floes, polar bears, scurvy, gnawing hunger, and the seemingly endless polar night that transformed the Fram into a "cold prison of loneliness." Once it became clear that the Fram could drift no farther, Nansen and crew member Hjalmar Johansen set out on a harrowing fifteen-month sledge journey to reach their destination by foot, which required them to share a sleeping bag of rotting reindeer fur and to feed the weaker sled dogs to the stronger ones. In the end, they traveled 146 miles farther north than any Westerner had gone before, representing the greatest single gain in polar exploration in four centuries. Farthest North is an unforgettable story that marks the beginning of the modern age of exploration and is a must-read for the armchair adventurer.Born in Norway in 1861, Fridtjof Nansen was a renowned explorer, author, artist, athlete, oceanographer, and statesman. 27 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Nansen's Farthest North is a must read By Thomas G. Chasteen This review is in reference to the original two volume set of Nansen's "Farthest North" published in 1897. The Modern Library abridged edition is drawn from that set.Nansen and 12 colleagues left Norway and sailed north in the Arctic Ocean above Siberia in 1893. Their purpose was to become frozen in the ice as it formed farther and farther south in the fall. Based on historical evidence from other attempts at far-north Arctic Ocean exploration, Nansen had decided that the flow of currents and winds in the Arctic Ocean were such that a frozen-in vessel that began above the Siberian Islands would drift northward with the ice across the North Pole over the next year or so. His goal therefore was to be the first to the North Pole. He planned for a expedition of as long as three years. These Arctic explorers' ship was a specially designed vessel, the Fram. Her construction was such that when trapped in the frozen ice, which had extremely variable depths and especially pressures, the ship would rise up above the swelling pack ice and avoid being crushed. The success of the ship's design was absolutely spectacular. This should be compared to the fate of the Endurance, Shackleton's ship (described in his book "South"), which was trapped in the Antarctic ice and crushed, more that 17 years after Nansen's memoir was published.Nansen's great success with sled dogs and sled designs published in the original memoir in 1897 adds credence to the relatively recent indictment (see Huntford) of the English Explorer Robert Scott who still disregarded the intense use of sled dogs in his 1910-12 Antarctic effort to reach the South Pole. Scott and four others basically die because of his ignorance/misunderstanding of the value of sled dogs, 15 years after Nansen details his successes with them on this expedition.Fridtjof Nansen's writing style is clear, interesting, and very engaging. He was obviously a first-rate, experienced explorer (having crossed lower Greenland in 1888) and yet, at the same time, someone who recognized that there is something special going on around him. He documents-via journal entries-his daily observations and feelings about the physical conditions, the people, and even the sled dogs born during the adventure. There are records of supplies, food, ocean depths, temperatures, drift direction and distances, wind speed, ice thickness, bear attacks, a fantastic two-person trek by dog sled, and beautiful and sometimes emotional details of the aurora borealis. The original two volume set includes photographs and drawings made from photographs taken on the trip. Also a fine set of maps clearly showed the route of the expedition. Some of these must be included in the Modern Library's abridged version. In comparison to the dry, guarded writing styles of Cherry-Garrard's "The Worst Journey in the World" or Shackleton's "South" this book is easier to read even though it too describes many terrifying situations and yet wonderful, hard-won successes. Nansen was just a better writer with more descriptive writing under his belt and possibly better initial plans for the book that would be produced from his experiences. This book is a must for readers interested in polar exploration. Reprint the original with color prints and engravings By John Roberts I will only state briefly, that I have an abiding interest inarctic exploration and I find that this edition, while very useful, does not do justice to the 1897 original in that the many engravings and esp the color prints are missing. One must purchase a used book to get the whole flavor of the original.

All who came after him benefited immensely from his experience. The primary characteristic that distinguished Nansen from most other explorers was that he approached all aspects of expedition planning with scientific precision. He started by reading accounts of previous expeditions in order to learn from the experiences of his predecessors. Nansen remarked in his diary that, to his surprise, most of the problems confronting him already had been addressed and, in many instances, solved by previous explorers: wear appropriate clothing, pay special attention to the food, select crew members who can get along, then keep them busy and entertained. In my book, Bold Endeavors: Lessons From Polar and Space Exploration, I suggest the Norwegian Polar Expedition as a model for modern space explorers. Nansen's systematic simulation, testing, and evaluation of every item of equipment and his meticulous attention to every detail and possible contingency set him apart from all previous and most subsequent explorers. But, most important, Nansen recognized that the physical and psychological well-being of his crew could make the difference between success and failure. Accordingly, he provided a well-designed habitat, insightful procedures, and exceptional leadership to a qualified and compatible crew. Roald Amundsen, the most successful of all explorers, wrote that, "The human factor is three quarters of any expedition." Before Amund-sen, Nansen knew that human factors were the critical components of any expedition; in Nansen's words, "It is the man that matters."

Rockefeller on a variety of subjects related to money. A very easy read, and very interesting, especially the personal letters at the end of the book between himself and his son. I enjoyed it, but didn't get any revolutionary information from it.

By karatekick2627 The book contained some interesting quotes and insights from Rockefeller about how he does business and his personal life. My favorite sections were the letters between him and his son and daughter; there was a lot of insight about the relationships he had with them. The book was quite short, however. You can check the dimensions for the size, but in between quotes there was a descent amount of space, making the book a very quick read. But it was overall an interesting book to read.

The business insights were still strong in many areas of our work today so it made the old saying ring true again; "Everything is different but everything remains the same." I purchased this book on sale and was worth the small investment. The ending however, came out of nowhere. I think it is worth the read but I would recommend doing a Wikipedia or similar search on JDR to read a little deeper into his thinking and to see how he addresses what many would believe to be hypocritical in some instances.

Winner of the Gourmand World Cookbook Award 2016!"A revolutionary cookbook"With OurOwn Hands is an intimate portrait of the Afghan and Tajik Pamiri people and the forbidding mountains that are their home. Through the lens of ancient recipes, stories and essays, and accompanied by the work of three award-winning photographers, the book tells about Pamiri food and agricultural traditions, people's daily lives, their struggles and celebrations. It is also a book about the origins of food. In the mountainous cradle of one of the world's least known and most isolated civilizations, many of the foods that are found on Western fields and dinner tables are cultivated and invented here in an enduring quest for survival. In a context where poverty, conflicts and political upheaval have made it difficult and often dangerous for people to express and define their identity, food becomes a powerful tool for its survival. With a foreword by HRH The Prince of WalesWith OurOwn Hands appears in a single three-language edition, with English, Dari and Tajik. The choice to make a book in which these three languages are combined was inspired by the authors' commitment to return a copy to each of the 1800 communities, schools and libraries in the Pamirs.

With Our Own Hands: A Celebration of Food and Life in the Pamir Mountains of Afghanistan and Tajikistan, by Frederik van Oudenhoven, Jamila Haider

Review It doesn't often happen that one needs to find superlatives to describe a book. For 'With our own hands', an entirely unique book about the hard life and beautiful culture in the Pamir Mountains, it is inevitable. In size, rigor and thoughtfulness [this book] has  become a touching piece of art. It is a gift to the people in those faraway mountains, who can now, for the first time, see their culture chronicled in printed form, as a living document, for, we hope, a living future.      -- Geerdt Magiels, Centre for Logic and Philosophy of Science, Vrije Universiteit Brussel The most intriguing cookbook we have ever held in our hands. -- Bouillon MagazineThis beautiful book highlights the critical role of the people of the Pamirs as custodians of their food, seeds and traditions. In a supremely challenging landscape, they guard the origins and diversity of many of the foods that are now found on fields and dinner tables around the world. We are introduced to an inspiring but fragile example of the interdependence between people and their environment, and the beauty and dignity that can arise from it. -- Carl Folke, Science Director, Stockholm Resilience Centrea herculean effort [...] tear-inducingly beautiful. -- caravanistan.com
