"[...]a fond mother because she insisted on having her children with her, under her thumb, marking their devotion as a prisoner marks time with his feet, stupidly, shufflingly, advancing not a step. Sometimes Sophy the clear-eyed and level-headed, seeing this state of affairs, tried to stop it. "You expect too much of your husband and children," she said one day, bluntly, to her sister. "I!" Flora's dimpled hands had flown to her breast like a wounded thing. "I! You're crazy! There isn't a more devoted wife and mother in the world. That's the trouble. I love them too much." "Well, then," grimly, "stop it for a change. That's half Eugene's nervousness—your fussing over him. He's eighteen. Give him a chance. You're weakening him. And stop dinning that society stuff into Adele's ears. She's[...]".

I enjoyed some stories more than others but overall, most held my interest. I confess to skimming parts of two. This is my first Edna Ferber book and I can honestly say she is a good writer. I wonder if I would enjoy her full length novels more, though? It's hard to write a completely satisfying story in the space of ten or twenty pages. You just get invested in the characters and its over. But it was a good taste of what Edna Ferber can do, so I'm glad I read it,Good news is, most of her short story compilations are public domain and free on Kindle and her full length novels are available to borrow off Openlibrary.org.CONTENT: G

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating, suspenseful, compelling short stories By Ruellia These stories are fabulous. Ferber presents a whole world of small town Wisconsin and adjoining states where she explores the clash between the older generation steeped in thrift, endless toil, caution, and fear for the future and the younger generation expecting comfort and abundance, revelling in consumer goods, and unwilling to endlessly clean and scrimp and save, resisting the fear and the caution their elders inculcate. She also presents class and ethnic barriers and how they wound people and damage their life chances. When she addresses the German Jewish milieu that she herself came from she seems to go deeper and to be more mordant. She can write beautiful prose when she wants to, but sometimes she veers into the brash post World War I style that revels in colloquialisms and advertising slang, and which verges on the smart alecky. She has the art of subtle and compelling description, which she manages to infuse with suspense. She knows how to get you to care about a character and to worry about her or him just by presenting, well before the action starts. It is extremely hard to stop reading and I stayed up way too late last night rereading Old Lady Mandle, which was just as hard to stop reading the second time as the first.Do yourself a big favor and download Half-Portions!
