Horatio Alger can be a little preachy about boys having good work habits and avoiding alcohol, tobacco, and gambling, but this book is still quite entertaining. Squeaky clean, and with a good moral. Like all his books, virtues are rewarded, and greedy villains get what are coming to them.

Taylor During his lifetime (1871-1919) Leonid Andreyev was among the best known and critically admired Russian authors--and a very prolific one as well, turning out numerous essays, stories, and plays. A leader in the Russian expressionist and symbolist movements, his ideas about art were not appreciated by the communist government that arose in the wake of the Russian Revolution; he not only fell out of favor, he essentially worried himself to death over the new direction Russia had taken. Following his death his works became increasing obscure, and today they are little known outside academic circles. But there is an exception: the 1914 HE WHO GETS SLAPPED.In theory, HE WHO GETS SLAPPED is an expressionist and symbolist drama that makes social commentary on the Russia of its era, reimagining it as a circus that mirrors and satirizes both the class system and its failures. In fact, however, it is most memorable as a circus play plain and simple, with both story and atmosphere extremely memorable. At its most basic, the story concerns a small Russian circus which stars Consuelo, the daughter of a decaying aristocratic family, as a bareback rider--and so remarkable is her talent that both she and the circus have become quite famous. Her father, a classic ne'erdowell, decides to leverage her fame and beauty into a marriage that will restore the family fortune. Into this mix comes a mysterious man who dreams of being a circus clown, and after talking his way into employment emerges as a star in his own right: He Who Gets Slapped, a performer who lectures but whose speeches are always interrupted by blows from the clowns around him.Romantic complications swirl through HE WHO GETS SLAPPED like cirus confetti: the sultry lion tamer, whose romantic frustration leads her to seek affection from her animals; the horse trainer who loves Consuelo but who believes her social rank places her beyond his reach; and, most importantly, the love that He feels for Consuelo that fuels the plot and drives the play to a conclusion both romantic and tragic. Acrobats, members of the audience, singers, managers, a host of minor characters brighten the scene, making the darkness behind the glitter all the more disconcerting.Memorably adapted to film for Lon Chaney in 1924, HE WHO GETS SLAPPED is seldom performed on stage today; the large cast, the costumes, and set are beyond the reach of most non-professional and semi-professional groups, while the subject matter places it outside the realm of commercial theatre. It is nonetheless a memorable script by a memorable if increasingly obscure author, and if you enjoy Russian literature or dramatic literature in general you will find it a pleasure to read.GFT, Amazon Reviewer

As Paul says in Romans, creation groans for redemption. But can we trust God to make all things new? The doctrines of creation and providence address the question of human anxiety in the face of suffering and evil. In a world that often seems to be spinning out of control, Christian faith confesses a "faithful Creator" (1 Peter 4:19) who promises a glorious future for all creation. In The Faithful Creator, seasoned professor and author Ron Highfield presents an overview of creation, providence and the problem of evil. He explores a wide range of issues, including the biblical accounts of creation, the dialogue between theology and science, models of providence, philosophical problems of evil and the proposals of open theism and process theism. Both accessible and scholarly, The Faithful Creator is an ideal text for classroom use.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great Resource! By Jimmy R. Reagan This volume tackles the tough questions, as the subtitle “Affirming Creation And Providence In An Age Of Anxiety” suggests. It is scholarly (I would guess graduate level), yet highly readable even if this is not your specialty. Dr. Highfield gives evidence of deeply thinking on everything involving these issues. The book is in three parts: Creation, Providence, and the Problem of Evil. By the time you finish you will see that the problem of evil is where your beliefs on creation and providence are tested. I was genuinely impressed with the author’s presentation, logic, and fairness. Though he was a strong Bible believer and conservative in theology, he did not write to support one theological persuasion as much as addressing the hardest questions we Christians will ever hear or think.Highlights include his explanation of the glory of God (pg. 111), his interaction with evolutionary biology (pg. 159), his description of reading the OT christologically (pg. 206), his phenomenal discussion of foreknowledge (pg. 226 ff), and his majestic handling of the problem of evil. This volume will get the most prominent place on my shelves for this subject. I highly recommend it!I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

The Anglo-Saxon period, stretching from the fifth to the late eleventh century, begins with the Roman retreat from the Western world and ends with the Norman takeover of England. Between these epochal events, many of the contours and patterns of English life that would endure for the next millennium were shaped. In this authoritative work, N. J. Higham and M. J. Ryan reexamine Anglo-Saxon England in the light of new research in disciplines as wide ranging as historical genetics, paleobotany, archaeology, literary studies, art history, and numismatics. The result is the definitive introduction to the Anglo-Saxon world, enhanced with a rich array of photographs, maps, genealogies, and other illustrations. The Anglo-Saxon period witnessed the birth of the English people, the establishment of Christianity, and the development of the English language. With an extraordinary cast of characters (Alfred the Great, the Venerable Bede, King Cnut), a long list of artistic and cultural achievements (Beowulf, the Sutton Hoo ship-burial finds, the Bayeux Tapestry), and multiple dramatic events (the Viking invasions, the Battle of Hastings), the Anglo-Saxon era lays legitimate claim to having been one of the most important in Western history.

The Anglo-Saxon World, by Nicholas Higham, M. J. Ryan

Review “Whether you want an accessible introduction to all things Anglo-Saxon, a thorough refresher of key points, or a reliably comprehensive reference tool to dip into, this is a wonderful book. Satisfyingly detailed, the authors assume no specialist knowledge on the part of their readers, but do not talk down to them either. It is an interdisciplinary work, combining lively analysis of written sources with archaeological discoveries, linguistic evidence, landscape archaeology, palaeobotany, genetics, and more. The scope is broad but often zooms in on interesting digressions...Complementing this treasure trove of information is a series of superb maps, we well as generous quantities of big, coloum either.rful photos that vividly illustrate the masterpieces that these supposedly Dark Age peoples were able to create.”—Current Archaeology   (Current Archaeology 2013-09-01)“[The authors] deserve the highest congratulations for this prodigious and delightful achievement, the very best book this reviewer has ever read about the Anglo-Saxons.”—Choice (Choice)"Full of fresh and original insights, and a delight to peruse, with informative maps and rich illustrations, this is a thought-provoking account that will be of value to specialists but accessible to the much wider range of readers who are fascinated by this formative period in British history. You could hardly have a better, more timely, and more attractive demonstration of why the Anglo-Saxons still matter to us."—Michael Wood, author of In Search of the Dark Ages (Michael Wood)

About the Author N. J. Higham is professor emeritus, University of Manchester. M. J. Ryan is a former lecturer in early medieval history, University of Manchester.

I was fortunate enough to order this book while on a research trip to England this June and it arrived in mid July. From the opening pages I was immediately struck and impressed by the authors approach. They present their book as being an introduction to the history of the Anglo-Saxon migration/invasion of Roman Britain and the evolution of the English nation-state up to its fall to the Normans. The authors sell themselves short. This book is far more than introduction and can be used by the merely interested as well as those with much deeper knowledge. Its a large beautifully produced tome."The Anglo-Saxon World" goes where many an author has failed to go in recent years - exploring the topic through an inter-disciplinary approach. Higham and Ryan give voice to the literary sources such as Gildas, Bede, Nennius and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. They examine the archaeology, the linguistics, the paleobotany, the genetics, even questionable theories such as much earlier German migration and acculturation, or the argument that the Saxon Shore forts were manned by the Saxons themselves, are given space even if to present counterpoints and set them aside. The book is structured as a chronology but uses subchapters at the end of each main chapter to explore specific aspects of the period and/or expound further on specific points concerning archaeology, religion, place names and language. There will be those who will criticize the book for its lack of footnotes but the authors do provide copious (and I do mean copious) reference sources in the chapter notes to direct readers to further texts concerning specific topics. I did not find the lack of footnootes detracted in anyway from the authors survey as they do not often directly quote other works and when then do, the quote is attributed. For those interested in a (heavy) volume that examines this period of English history without being beaten over the head with one agenda or another this book will be highly valued.

The Anglo-Saxon story updated By FC Harris The authors provide a well illustrated and updated general account of the full Anglo-Saxon period, which will likely be of genuine interest and sound educational value to both the lay and student reader. For more advanced study, detailed sources are given in references and comprehensive bibliography at the end of the book.In particular the latest archaeological, genetic, isotope analysis on burials, place-names, coin finds etc. evidence was examined and used to persuasively demonstrate the emergence of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms after the departure of the Romans, including contrasting developments in near continental neighbors. However like previous texts, the discussion dealing with the early 5/6th centuries still fundamentally relies on scant historical records and therefore seemingly remains inconclusive on the languages spoken across Britain and the scale of Germanic/Scandinavian settlement.Indeed the possibility that the indigenous Britons (and the British language) faced with Saxons, Angles and other groups of raiders/settlers along the North Sea coasts as reported in the historical sources, were a pre-Roman resident Germanic-speaking people along with the Welsh, Gaels and Picts, could have been more thoroughly explored in the text. See for example http://fchknols.wordpress.com

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. full of detail & research, yet accessible. By NYer family I have to admit that I'm only a short way into the volume--and it IS hefty--but what a treasure trove it promises to be. The most exciting aspect are the detailed illustrations, maps and photos scattered liberally throughout I love the obvious enthusiasm of the authors. As a layperson, I was not bogged down by overly academic writing that you sometimes find in publications. Loved the attention to small details like the use of an old-english font in some of the graphics.Despite my almost exclusive use of Kindles for reading, I would not attempt this book on such a device--I don't think the format would work. The current hardcover price on Amazon is a bargain, so just order it, heft it around and you'll be able to skip a session at the gym.

Simple and Brilliant Message with Concrete Examples By Don (MathCelebrity.com) If you are a business owner tired of hearing about how the average person you sell to has little to no money, this is the book for you. Simple in it's message, yet most business owners avoid it, myself included. Dan Kennedy serves up a brilliant list of examples on WHY you should be marketing to the affluent. The first thing that should hit you over the head, no matter how obvious: They have money, and they spend it.I don't know about you, but I'm tired of trying to sell to people that either have no money, or no buying authority. Dan Kennedy is at his finest in this book doing what he does best. He tells you the things you NEED to hear as a business owner, but are uncomfortable hearing.

I loved this because, while this works for marketing to people everywhere, there are specific psychographic nuances discussed in this book that must be understood if you want to effectively sculpt your marketing funnel.Much of this advice is very good in terms of really going deep with information. You get a 10 point list of yourWhat you won't get here, though: a million case studies. There is one really good one at the end of the book in the final chapter. I would have loved to see more case studies for at least 2-3 different industries.I love, love, love the added chapters from Dicks and Nanton. The information was very key. I ended up getting their book (StorySelling) and have been enjoying their content also.Having worked with a few "clients with money" and "affluent clients" in several industries - businesses, and as an employee - I can see the experienced truth in the lessons. The most important piece for me however, is how he spends a lot of time diving into the mindset of the affluent, the common assumptions, and their values. When you know and understand these things, your strategy gets a pure facelift.

In late November world leaders will gather in Paris at the United Nations Climate Change Conference for what is viewed as the last great chance for a sweeping international agreement to limit carbon dioxide emissions. The consequences of this gathering may be enormous. In this new ebook, experts Patrick J. Michaels and Paul C. Knappenberger assess the issues sure to drive the debate before, during, and after the Paris meeting.

Lukewarming: The New Climate Science that Changes Everything, by Patrick J. Michaels, Paul C. Knappenberger

Review Pat Michaels and Paul Knappenberger are real climate scientists, who think that man-made global warming is real. But they refuse to buy into the politicized pseudoscience that has increasingly been used to buttress the case that global warming is also likely to be dangerous. For this they have been routinely vilified. In this light but serious book, they expose many shocking myths about climate change and make a devastating case for lukewarming. (Matt Ridley, Author of The Rational Optimist)

About the Author Patrick J. Michaels is the director of the Center for the Study of Science at the Cato Institute. Michaels is a past president of the American Association of State Climatologists and was program chair for the Committee on Applied Climatology of the American Meteorological Society. He is the author or editor of six books on climate and its impact, and he was an author of the climate “paper of the year” awarded by the Association of American Geographers in 2004. Chip Knappenberger is the assistant director of the Center for the Study of Science at the Cato Institute, and coordinates the scientific and outreach activities for the Center. He has over 20 years of experience in climate research and public outreach. He has published numerous papers in the major atmospheric science journals on global warming, hurricanes, precipitation changes, weather and mortality, and Greenland ice melt, among many other areas, and is a very popular presenter at climate conferences worldwide.

I’m not sure why another reviewer described the writing as awful. The book is well done. It is comprised of multiple short, concise, clearly written chapters covering all the facets of climate change science in just the right amount of depth. The accompanying graphics are excellent--- better in color on my Kindle Fire versus my black and white. I didn’t notice any distracting ebook issues at all. It is a science book, as advertised, which is what I was looking for.In my view, the discovery of empirical methods has been the key driver of modern human material prosperity. That’s kind of a truism, but it is intriguing to observe how even very smart people can sometimes lose the focus on basic principles of valid statistical inference. A strength of this book is the focus on those very basic principles as applied to climate science. The scientific proposition driving climate change alarmism is that we can predict the future---that climate is predictable to a level of accuracy and precision on the relevant timeframe such that public policy can reasonably be based on those predictions. In light of current understanding of complex non-linear systems one may reasonably ask: What is the prior probability that human-made computer algorithms starting around the end of the 20th century will accurately predict global temperature 20, 50 or 100 years into the future? It’s an extraordinary claim. It’s a hypothesis requiring robust empirical validation by out of sample prospective data. Stated more technically: the prospective data must reject the null hypothesis that climate is unpredictable. In any other discipline that last sentence would be uncontroversial. But somehow, along the way, in climate science the null hypothesis has now shifted to imminent dangerous anthropogenic global warming. It’s as if the burden of proof is now on those that doubt predictions of climate catastrophe. As very well reviewed in this book, the climate models used for the IPCC consensus reports are predicting substantially more warming than is actually occurring. There is a systematic error in the climate models. To my view, this is the nut of the problem with climate alarmism, casting real doubt on the myriad predictions of all sorts of severe climate related problems. But now that the null hypothesis has somehow shifted to dangerous global warming there is no failure of the models that can ever disprove the null hypothesis. All of the multiple retrospective explanations for failure of the models are presented as refinements of our understanding of global warming instead of post hoc reasoning. It is argued that the models are good enough. We can’t wait 50 years for them to be validated. Because global warming. Objecting to the lack of empirical validation of predictions of catastrophe now becomes anti-science and immoral.1.3 billion people live without access to electricity, mostly living in Sub-Saharan Africa and developing Asia. The attempts to block the construction of coal-fired power plants in Africa and India because of predictions of dangerous global warming decrease the chance that young people in these regions will have access to electricity in their lifetimes. Poverty kills people. Lack of access to affordable electricity shortens lifespans. The WHO estimates that 3.2m million deaths per year are caused by indoor biomass burning. This is real harm to real people in the here and now.Humans have a strong proclivity to predict the future, especially apocalypse. It’s been a feature of humankind since the beginning. Environmentalists don’t have any better track record than others in making accurate predictions, although they may be the champs on the apocalypse scale. We need to be very sure that climate alarmism in not just another chapter in the story of human evolutionary psychology, with the digital computer as the latest Oracle of Delphi. The other driver of modern human material prosperity is exploitation of energy concentrated in fossil fuels. Decision makers in the rich nations owe it to people living without energy security to be scrupulously scientific when examining predictions of climate catastrophe caused by burning fossil fuels. This book presents a thorough discussion of the quality of the science from an appropriately skeptical stance.

He gets quickly to the heart of each issue and explains it well. Using his definition I am a "lukewarmer" but I don't like the term much. I'm a scientist by trade and prefer the term skeptic. I still think skeptic is the accurate term for someone who questions the "settled" in "settled" science. But, the world is warming and man probably plays some unknown role in the warming. So, some like to say lukewarmer so they don't get confused with those that dogmatically deny the world is warming or that man has any role, no matter how small, in the warming. A lukewarmer would say that we don't know the causes of warming, we can't measure accurately the natural forces affecting warming, so we can't say how big man's contribution is. Which is also what a proper skeptic would say. In any case I found the book to be an enjoyable read and quite accurate. The nice thing about the book is it is written in short and easy to digest chapters. I disagree with the other reviewer who said the writing is poor. I thought the writing was quite good.

If the models cannot predict todays climate from data of 20 years ago, they are not usable to predict the future with data of today. Probably biased in the opposite direction from the "settled science" of climate change, but well worth reading.

Among the rarest things on earth, meteorites carry an air of mystery and drama while having left a pervasive, outsized mark on our planet and civilization. In Meteorite, Maria Golia tells the long history of our engagement with these sky-born space rocks. Arriving amid thunderous blasts and flame-streaked skies, meteorites were once thought to be messengers from the gods. Worshipped in the past, now scrutinized with equal zeal by scientists, meteorites helped sculpt Earth’s features and have shaped our understanding of the planet’s origins. Prized for their outlandish qualities, meteorites are a collectible and a commodity, objects of art and artists’ desires and a literary muse; and ‘meteorite hunting’ is an adventurous, lucrative profession for some and an addictive hobby for thousands of others.            A richly illustrated, remarkably wide-ranging account of the culture and science surrounding meteorites, Golia’s book explores the ancient, lasting power of the meteorite to inspire and awe.

Meteorite: Nature and Culture (Earth), by Maria Golia

Review “Meteorite, part of Reaktion’s “Earth” series, is not a typical book about these fascinating objects. Instead of focusing entirely on the scientific study of meteorites, the book begins with an overview of the long history of direct sightings of meteorite falls that were not believed. The work is filled with high-quality color illustrations, many of which are images of meteorites and craters caused by impacts. However, it also addresses meteorites in mythology, history, and art, including images interspersed throughout the text of artwork made from or about meteorites.  Golia, a writer based in Egypt, has not neglected the science, although it is not the main emphasis. Even those familiar with the science of meteorites are likely to find something new to them in this exhaustively researched work. She also manages to provide insight into the economics of meteorite falls. . . . Overall, this is a fantastic book analyzing meteorites in many different contexts, providing the reader with a rich overview. . . . Highly recommended.”   (Choice)“Book of the Month. . . . In Meteorite we are introduced to the science and culture surrounding the rocks from space that we know as meteorites but that were once looked upon as being messengers from the gods. In this well-researched and copiously-illustrated book, the author looks back in time to discover how the arrival of these celestial visitors induced a sense of awe and wonder in our ancestors. . . . Golia introduces us to a large number of meteorite aficionados and scholars, hunters and collectors, including the meteorite enthusiast and former punk rock musician Geoffrey Notkin who, we are informed, once said that ‘’like the sound of the ocean in a seashell, meteorites carry within them a faint murmur of infinity.’ Notkin’s words sum up the fascination we have with meteorites, a fascination which this book brings across very well.” (BBC Sky at Night Magazine)“This is an extremely well-researched book, with its focus away from the scientific details and squarely on the place of meteorites in various aspects of human culture. Despite a lifetime’s interest in astronomy, I hadn’t previously seen most of the images beautifully reproduced on the very high quality paper. I found the depiction of meteorites and their craters within artworks, especially those by tribespeople, fascinating. . . . The book renewed my interest in meteorites in general—a success for any book. . . . There are plenty of amusing and well-told stories in there, too.” (Astronomy Now)“Enjoyable survey . . . shows that meteorites still occupy an anomalous space where science, myth, art, commerce, and apocalypse collide . . . Meteorite is an object of beauty, with the sumptuous colour illustration we have come to expect from Reaktion’s natural history monographs. The images include ancient artefacts, pulp illustrations, ethnographic tableaux, and stunning aerial photography of craters, but focus primarily on the meteorites: portraits that reveal the patterns sculpted by heat and g-forces in their passage through the atmosphere and precision-cut magnified sections that turn their fine-grained structures into kaleidoscopic works of art.” (Fortean Times)“Golia blends the magic of meteorites across time and ownership. The book is filled with stories, examples, and exceptional pictures. At no time does it go overboard into heavy science, which makes it a great read for the casual meteorite aficionado. . . . In fact the book is filled with the litterati and glitterati of meteorites, both intellectual and commercial. The tales of science are as thrilling to uncover as the auctions stories. Whether through poetry, paintings, or pop culture, Golia drills home the interaction between everything meteorite in a precious tome of some 208 pages.” (Martin Horejsi, Meteorite Times)“This is a beautifully written, well-researched book that looks at the science, history, and social aspect of meteorites. Here is the story of stones from space, and I recommend it to anyone interested in these fascinating bits of other worlds which have landed here on Earth.” (Christopher P. McKay, NASA Planetary Scientist)“Golia has brought to her truly wonderful subject a matching spirit of wonder and has explored the science and magic, art and uses of ‘lightning rock,’ ‘iron rain,’ and sacred betyls, with passion, wit—and fiery compression.” (Marina Warner, author of Once Upon a Time: A Short History of Fairy Tale)

About the Author Maria Golia is the author of Cairo: City of Sand and Photography and Egypt, both published by Reaktion Books. She lives in Egypt.

A Gem Of A Book By Simon Worrall Packed with amazing details, from the story of the world's biggest meteorite crater in Siberia to the woman whose Chevy was crushed by a meteorite and now tours the museums of the world as an "impactifact," this gem of a book by Egyptian-based ( but New Jersey-born), Maria Golia, weaves together the history, myth and science of meteorites. I knew nothing about them before I read it, and came away amazed and enchanted. Meteorites helped us understand the age of the cosmos, were used by writers from Shakespeare to Saint Exupery as magical omens; and in many ways made life itself possible, by bringing essential elements like nickel, carbon and even amino acids to earth. As she says, asteroids remind us that Earth is our home, but Earth's home is space.
