About the Author Oscar Wilde was born on October 16, 1854, to the Irish nationalist and writer Speranza Wilde and the doctor William Wilde. After graduating from Oxford in 1878, Wilde moved to London, where he became notorious for his sharp wit and flamboyant style of dress. Though he was publishing plays and poems throughout the 1880s, it wasn t until the late 1880s and early 1890s that his work started to be received positively. In 1895, Oscar Wilde was tried for homosexuality and was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison. Tragically, this downfall came at the height of his career, as his plays, An Ideal Husband "and The Importance of Being Earnest, "were playing to full houses in London. He was greatly weakened by the privations of prison life, and moved to Paris after his sentence. Wilde died in a hotel room, either of syphilis or complications from ear surgery, in Paris, on November 30, 1900.

It was mined (without acknowledgement) by Richard Ellman, who included about a third of these pieces in The Artist as Critic: Critical Writings of Oscar Wilde, but he left a lot of gold in this 450 pp. mountain.Since I can't imitate Oscar Wilde's sparkling wit, may I at least imitate him in the use of plenty of quotations from whatever books are under review- be it poetry, novels, histories of Greece, biographies:A steady course of Balzac reduces our living friends to shadows, and our acquaintances to the shadows of shades. Who would care to go out to an evening party to meet Tomkins, the friend of one's boyhood, when one can sit at home with Lucien de Rubempré? It is pleasanter to have the entrée to Balzac's society than to receive cards from all the duchesses in May fair.[...]K. E. V.'s little volume is a series of poems on the Saints. Each poem is preceded by a brief biography of the Saint it celebrates--which is a very necessary precaution, as few of them ever existed. It does not display much poetic power, and such lines as these on St. Stephen,--Did ever man before so fall asleep?A cruel shower of stones his only bed,For lullaby the curses loud and deep,His covering with blood red--may be said to add another horror to martyrdom. Still it is a thoroughly well-intentioned book and eminently suitable for invalids.[...]For my own part, I must confess that it was not until I heard Sarah Bernhardt in Phèdre that I absolutely realised the sweetness of the music of Racine. As for Mr. Birrell's statement that actors have the words of literature for ever on their lips, but none of its truths engraved on their hearts, all that one can say is that, if it be true, it is a defect which actors share with the majority of literary critics.Such a rich and wide-ranging collection should not be read straight through, although there is no table of contents, indexed or otherwise- one reason I call this mountain 'solid.' He's the greatest, so utterly pompous yet compassionate and humane, so three-dimensional, so all-knowing, yet so childishly naive. The Wouldbegoods is hilarious and quite informative. I learned a great deal about British vocabulary--"ripping" is now my most-loved word.

Alice Bastable cries when yet another plan of the 'Wouldbegoods' goes disastrously wrong. Her despair is understandable, in their attempts to perform good deeds the six Bastable children and their two friends wreck havoc across the British countryside. Yet in the end they do manage to do good, quite by accident. Absolutely hilarious.

Of course, the best laid plans...But what child can resist a story of children living in a moat house, spending their summer free to explore the English countryside? What great ideas will the children come up with next? The characters are funny and very real. There is trouble around every bend, but a theme of honesty and integrity runs through the story like a breath of fresh country air.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Philosophical Nautical Romantic Farce By Bob Carpenter This book's an odd kettle of fish. It focuses on Jack Easy, starting at his birth, following him through school and into the Navy. He joins to press his socialist philosophy of the "equality of man". The book was first published in 1836, when Karl Marx was 18. Zeitgeist, perhaps?In tone, the book's half nautical fiction along the lines of O'Brian, Forester, Pope, etc., and half 17th century romantic farce that sees a rival found out in women's clothing, diabolical happenings at a costume ball, the come-uppance of a conniving father-confessor, a hilarious three-way duel, and more. The situations will be all the funnier if you've read more "serious" nautical fiction before this.Oddly, even though the author was himself a retired British naval post-captain (who served under Cochrane when he was himself a midshipman!), there is relatively little focus on the nautical details, and a whole lot of focus on the characters. Sure, there's a gale (and quite a good one), and some beam to beam broadside action, but mostly it's about the characters. In every situation, there's little tension as we know our hero will make good a Hornblower-like escape by some indirect means.The author jumps in as the omniscient narrator from time to time. For instance, there's one chapter that's an odd repetition of an argument made in a previous book against overly harsh punishment in the service.The wisdom's along the lines of "spare the rod, spoil the child" and the character "development" sees Mr. Easy move from channeling Marx to channeling Ayn Rand. As the earlier positions are argued as hard as the latter, it's actually hard to see the author's position here, which is quite interesting.Overall, though, the book just doesn't hang together as a continuous, tense story about the sea, which is one of the main reasons to read nautical fiction. On the other hand, if you've run out of the better nautical fiction, this one's well worth a read. A more interesting genre piece from this era is Wilkie Collins's mystery "The Moonstone".

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Midshipman Exremely Easy By A Customer Great book in that it doesn't take itself too seriously. Great tongue-in-cheek view of life aboard a British man-of-war. Of course its not too realistic, which O'Brian attempts and Forrester accomplishes, still, a real hilarious adventure tale. Easy leads an unbelievably charmed life, to the point of delightful reading but not incredulity. Characters are real yet outstandingly rich and beautiful. Find yourself putting your head back now and then and laughing in a most horse-like fashion... In regard to sea stories of this nature, I put C.S. Forrester 1st (He is the master, and will always be 1st just as Tolkien will always be 1st for fantasy readers), Marryat 2nd, O'Brian 3rd (too much pontificating...) and Alexander Kent and others a distant, distant, distant 4th.

Tobias While digging through the treasure trove of nautical fiction available, I found this gem.Written in the 1830s, this story is a sharp social commentary combined with the adventure of a midshipman in the Royal Navy. I found this a delightful observation of society, which from today is even more humorous than it might have been 200 years ago.The language isn't far off from today's (the sailing vocabulary hasn't -obviously- changed). A good read for just about any age. Footnotes (in the Heart of Oak edition) to help those unfamiliar with some 19th C. idioms or semi-obscure sailing terminology.If you haven't read Marryat's work yet, this is a good one to get your feet wet.

A new world for me By Jennifer Lara My grandmother always believed that the crystals had great powers, she believed that they could have great influence on the flow of energies of a place and to make major changes in the lives of people. I did not think about it until one summer she gave me her collection of crystals. I had that little box full of crystals all my life but only now, thanks to this book I have learned what they really are. It is amazing and exciting learning all the varieties of stones and their powers!

I just know crystal, as simply as it is, but never the special power inside it. This reading is educative, such as there are healing techniques whether for health or not and some learning benefits. Well thanks to this book, I am now curious in having such crystal on hand. Twas a great read for a beginner.

Crystals By Sabrina Walters My boyfriend and I went to a spa for our second anniversary just because we want to have a relaxation and to remove all our stress. The spa uses crystals for their therapy and we both are new to the process however, since we are already there we have decided to just try it for experience as well. I must say that crystals really are effective when it comes to healing. So from then on my boyfriend and I believe in the healing properties of crystals and we both are interested in knowing more about it and that is why we purchased this book as it has everything there is to know about crystals. So for those who are curios how crystals works and what it can do I recommend this book as this is very informative and precise.

Dr. Jim Burleson was raised on a farm north of Carlisle, Arkansas in the Wattensaw community, named for the nearby bayou. He was one of three children. The family raised cattle, pigs, cotton and soybeans. He and his brother Stan began hunting and fishing at a very early age. Table fare often consisted of fish, venison, duck or swamp rabbit plus whatever came from the family garden.   Parents Luella and James Roy strongly advocated scholastic achievement and all three children excelled academically.  Dr. Burleson attended grades 2-12 in the Carlisle School system then earned scholarships to U.C.A. in Conway, Arkansas then known as the State College of Arkansas. His dental degree was earned at the University Of Tennessee College Of Dentistry.  Upon graduation, he was named to the Dean Society and Omicron Kappa Upsilon-the two highest academic awards.   Burleson Family Dentistry is located in Cabot, Arkansas where Dr. James practices with his younger son Brad. Mike, the older son, lives in Maumelle, Arkansas.  He has numerous degrees in computer networking and communications and recently earned his M.B.A.

By Julie Schafer What a great, hones book about a young man who accepted life on life's terms. He came from humble origins but it was these origins that laid the groundwork for his drive, determination in life as well as the development of a strong moral code and integrity that are part of his daily life. We all can learn from him, namely, to enjoy the simply pleasures in life that so many of our children never are taught. He points out clearly that it is not what cards we are dealt in life that determine winners or losers, but rather how we play whatever cards we are dealt. The most honorable people in life understand struggles and persistence. I highly recommend the simply, humorous book to others.

I've heard bits and pieces of these stories growing up but it was nice to fill in the blanks with the complete picture. I definitely know where my appreciation of nature comes from. This is certainly a nice read for all you hunters out there. I'm looking forward to the next book.

29 of 29 people found the following review helpful. a study in mathematical thought By Vin de Silva I want to add a few words to the brief comment by the reader in Monroe (who gave this book one star). I tend to agree that "Proofs and Refutations" isn't a primer in mathematical proof-writing; it's certainly not a textbook for beginning mathematicians wanting to know how to practice their craft.However, for those readers (including beginning mathematicians) who are interested in the broader picture, who are interested in the nature of mathematical proof, then Lakatos is essential reading. The examples chosen are vivid, and there is a rich sense of historical context. The dramatised setting (with Teacher and students Alpha, Beta, Gamma, etc) is handled skilfully. Now and then, a foolish-seeming comment from one of the students has a footnote tagged to it; more often than not, that student is standing in for Euler, Cauchy, Poincare or some other great mathematician from a past era, closely paraphrasing actual remarks made by them. That in some ways is the most important lesson I learned from this book; "obvious" now doesn't mean obvious then, even to the greatest intellects of the time.Although "Proofs and Refuatations" is an easy book to begin reading, it is not an easy book per se. I have returned to it repeatedly over the last ten years, and I always learn something new. The text matures with the reader.

But how did they come to be that way? What is the role of counterexamples? Why are some definitions so peculiar? What good are proofs?In this brilliant and deep -- yet easy to read -- book, Lakatos shows how mathematicians explore concepts; how their ideas can develop over time; and how misleading the "textbook" presentation of math really is.Fascinating for anyone who has seen mathematical proofs (even high-school Euclidean geometry) and essential for anyone studying mathematics at any level.If you'd like to read more discussion about Lakatos and the intellectual context of P&R, you'll be interested in Brendan Larvor's "Lakatos: An Introduction".

Mathematics as a human endeavor to meet human needs By Tom Gray I would recommend that anyone interested in mathermaics or indeed anyone interested in human activities read Imre Lakatos's seminal book 'Proofs and Refutations: The Logic of Mathematical Discovery'.Lakatos direcctly makes the distinction between formal and informal mathematics. Formal mathematics is contained in the proofs published in mathematical journals. Informal mathematics are the strategies that working mathemeticians use to make their work a useful exercise in mathematical discovery.The proof provided for the four colour theorm which was derved in the 1970's relied heavily on the sue of computers and brute force technqiues. It was extremely cotroversial not because it was invalid but because of the issues which Lakatos so clearly describes in this book.It was undoubtedly a valid formal proof. However it did nothing to advance the cause of mathematics beyond this.The reason that Lakatos equates proofs and refutation in his title is his contention that it is the refutations that are developed that show mathematicians the deficiencies and indeed teh possibilites in their theories. A refutation does not necessarily discredit a theory. Instead it provides insights to the theory's limitations and possibiliites for future development. It is their attempts to deal with unwanted and unexpected refutations - to preserve a valuable theory in the face of imperfect axioms and proof methods - that teach mathemeticians the true depths of their conceptions and to point the way to new and deeper ones.Lakatos shows this by an account of the historical development of the concept of proof in mathematics and by showing in historical detail how certain valuable 'proofs' were preserved in the face of refutation. To this point Lakatos shows that the 'proofs' of the truth of Euler's number are no proofs at all. The great mathemetician Euler noticed that for any regular polyhedron the formula V-E+F=2 holds where V is the number of vertexes, E is the number of edges and F is the number of faces. Euler's and his successors proofs fall before any number of counterexamples. Does this prove that the theorem is 'incorrect?' Or does it mean as mathemetician's actions show that they thought it meant was that their concept of what constituted a regular polyhedron was deficient. Lakatos shows how these conceptions were modified over a couple of hundred years as counterexample after counterexample were faced.These counterexamples all made mathematics stronger by deepening the conception of what polyhedra really are and by discovering new classes of them. In the end Euler's formula turned out not to have a proof but to be in effect a tautology. It is true for the regular polyhedra for which it is true by the definition of what constitutes a polyhedron. It is true because human mathematicians in order to make progress need it to be true.The computer proof of the four color theorem was a triumph of formal mathematics. Its critics complained and if interpreted according to what Lakatos wrote in this book, they complained because it defeated the progress of informal mathematics.Mathematical proofs are useful tools. The tell us what we need to know. Formal mathematics is about finding them. Informal mathematics is about making them useful. Mathematics is not some Platonian ideal divorced from humanity, painting, poetry ... It is a human endeavor to meet human needs.
