They provide a snapshot of life in Louisiana in the late 19th century, and truly fulfill this reader's desire to be transported to a different time and place.In each story, often only a few pages long, the author paints a vivid picture a the characters, their circumstances, and motivations.The theme of all the stories is change. Although the turns of events described are generally not monumental, they are often the catalyst for a significant change in a character. And sometimes the point is that there is no change.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Classic- Buy/read this book, it's worth it! By R. Knapp Kate Chopin is one of the best writers ever. She is worth reading for that fact alone. (Period)Chopin's stories are culturally significant for a diverse and stirred up post Civil War Louisiana society. They are humanly sigificant. She is sensitive and fair-minded.Chopin has been criticized for not holding 21st Century values and criticizing the racist/sexist/elitist world she lived in. However, she has done better. She has reported things 'as they were'. That's what makes these stories important. (If she were to be editorial, I'd wonder what she has to say about us. I doubt she'd see social improvement.)Chopin was lost in obscurity following her novella, The Awakening. Rediscovery, awareness, and interest came in the '70's, catalyzed by the feminist movement.I discovered Chopin in an anthology, Forms of the Novella (David H. Richter, 1981, Knopf), which contains The Awakening. (Buy Forms of the Novella next.) My reaction was interesting. Despite recognizing the greatness of Chopin as a writer, I was deeply disturbed by this story and doubted whether I wanted to read more. Learning of the feminist connection also made me uneasy. It made me think she had an 'agenda'. Curiosity prevailed. My trepidation was inappropriate. Chopin is the least sexist writer I can think of. She laughs at men & women, and cries with them, equally.These stories are delightful! If you can read, read them! Even the ones that are fluffy and predictable are worth the read (see my first sentence).

Velez Although the book is written with Ballantyne's usual great skill in descriptive passages, the actual plan of the book is most unusual for him. In Chapter 1 he describes a young family, then describes the exploits of some of the boys of the family, now grown-up, in Chapters 2, 3, 4 and 5. But in Chapter 5 there is introduced a story about a schoolboy who is nothing to do with the Thorogoods, though it is quite a good story, parts of it reminding one of "Martin Rattler," and his days at school. In Chapter 6 we are back to one of the Thorogood boys, who is a missionary in London, working among the poor. The final chapter also contains a long story about a third party, and ends with most of the family emigrating to the Rockies in North America. Here again the enwrapped short story is a good read.We must remember that in Ballantyne's usual style there are often two stories in some way running parallel with each other. In this case there are no less than six, and two of those enwrap a further story. It is really quite unusual for Ballantyne to write in such a convoluted manner.But be not afraid. The stories are very short. Ballantyne normally writes with each of his chapters nearly of the same length, but here we have 7, 6, 7, 8, 23, 9, 36 pages in the seven chapters, and it consists of at least ten exciting episodes. It is worth a read.

The controversial subject matter of Grant Allen’s novel, The Woman Who Did, made it a major bestseller in 1895. It tells the story of Herminia Barton, a university-educated New Woman who, because of her belief that marriage oppresses women, refuses to marry her lover even though she shares his bed and bears his child. Her ideals come into disastrous conflict with intensely patriarchal late Victorian England. Indeed, Allen intended his novel to shock readers into a serious exploration of some of the major issues in fin de siècle sexual politics, issues that he himself, in various periodical articles under the rubric of the “Woman Question,” had played a leading role in opening up to public debate.

This Broadview edition contains a critical introduction as well as a rich selection of appendices which include excerpts from Allen’s writings on women, sex, and marriage; contemporary writings on the “Sex Problem”; documents pertaining to the Marriage Debate; contemporary responses to the novel; and excerpts from two parodies of the novel.

A Story of Grace and Hope By Anna Before introducing you to Queechy, let me introduce you to its author, one of my absolute favorites, Susan Warner (pseudonym Elizabeth Wetherell). She was the sister of Anna Warner, who wrote the infamous hymn "Jesus Loves Me." That hymn originally appeared as a poem in one of Susan's books, eventually gaining worldwide fame. Susan's first novel, The Wide, Wide World, was published in 1850 and was one of the most popular early American novels. Queechy was Miss Warner's second novel, and one of her longest.Queechy is a deeply satisfying read, for one who is willing to absorb a long and detailed story instead of a whirlwind novel. It is the story of Fleda Ringaan, a young orphan who is faced with a string of joys and sorrows as she comes of age. It is a love story, but one that is much more subtly - and thus more richly - told than what we are used to today. The storytelling is intricate, full of deeply felt emotion, powerful imagery, and wry humor. Warner had an Austen-like insight into the quirks of human nature, and this often makes its way into the story as well. It is undeniably an example of "sentimental" literature, and it moves slowly and focuses on characters and dialogue rather than events.Christianity is the hallmark of the book. As one who enjoys reading contemporary Christian fiction and seeing how authors integrate faith with their storytelling, I find Warner's approach stirring, ennobling, and beautiful. Faith and religion are explicit, but not forced. They are such essential aspects of the story that they cannot help but make themselves plain. And they are moving, insightful, and built on Warner's excellent theology and tender love for the Lord.A surface reading of Queechy's heroine may lead one to believe she is only a precursor of the dubiously well-behaved Elsie Dinsmore (who is still dear to my heart in spite of her perfections). But a deeper understanding of the text reveals a heroine who is flawed, and who is resting on grace alone for her forgiveness. The purity of remaining "unspotted from the world," which is mentioned so often in the book, is not sinlessness, but innocence of knowledge and intention about the morally bankrupt ways of culture. This is the spotlessness which Fleda's friends desire for her.A certain sense of class superiority also pervades the story. Without an understanding of nineteenth-century culture, a modern reader may be confused or put off by this. Yet taking into account the feelings and ideas of the day, in both English and American culture, the Christian characters in the novel make significant efforts toward understanding how they fit into society and how they can interact with those who are not their equals in station, intelligence, or education. Some of their ideas are outdated now, but if understood properly, they do not detract from the story's strength.Yet another aspect that may concern modern readers is the serious nature of the novel. I can imagine it being labeled melodramatic and melancholy. Ironically, this serious tone is mentioned many times in the story itself - the contrast between the ways of the lighthearted, cheerful world, and the very sobering and serious life that Fleda is living. There are so many lessons to be learned from Queechy about what joy really looks like.This novel is full of passages that I want to frame on my wall. It is full of Christ's beauty and goodness, full of the knowledge that He is everything and the world and all its pleasures are passing away, full of the knowledge that life is only brightened by the wonder of His love, and that suffering is worthwhile when one is doing what is right. Rather than investing your time in reading yet another Jane Austen novel, try picking up Queechy, and immersing yourself in the timelessness of a story of grace and hope.

An anthropological time capsule By Random customer Maria Graham, wife of a British naval captain, has gone along for a voyage that delivers more than anyone had anticipated. They arrive in Brazil in 1823, at the moment this developing nation is deciding to cut the umbilical cord/noose from mother Portugal. Graham, a privileged and, more or less neutral observer of the struggles, chronicles them in her diary. Both sides of the war are currying favour from the British, and consequently she is welcomed nearly everywhere she pokes her curious little nose. She summarizes the broadly painted details that historical texts would catch, but spends much more time writing of the fine details that history books miss. She describes the ways of wearing clothing, and the various entertainments in a Brazilian parlour. She details the food at the table, the crops in the field, and the fruit in the trees. You long to see Brazil, then and now.Through it all the reader quickly notices that all the observations are filtered through the mind of a woman aggrandized by the empire to which she belongs. Hail Britannia! Yes there is eye-popping prejudice in almost every description. She sees herself as a progressive idealist. One suspects she is trying to be scandalous when she says such things as: "By the last census, the population of Pernambuco, including Olinda was seventy thousand, of which not above one third are white: the rest are mulatto or negro. The mulattoes are, generally speaking more active, more industrious, and more lively than either of the other classes." Notice that? While the speaker pretends to champion a "race" not her own while giving her fellow whites a well deserved backhanded slap-down she is still equating race with class. She is a complex woman who allows herself to say scandalously liberal things only because she is so sure she occupies the highest rung of genetics (she sees herself as well-bred and of of the best stock) Of course all of this would be weird if it wasn't there, as Mrs. Graham is indeed a product of her time.Highly entertaining. And for me the price was kind of worth it over getting the free versions for the ability to highlighting your favourite bits and making notes.

A hidden gem from the turn of the century By Jared Chambers is remembered as a one-hit wonder, and, even today, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone that knows him for more than "The King in Yellow".In Search of the Unknown isn't quite as transcendental as his famous short story, but it is brilliant in a completely different way. For lack of a better term, it is a collection of romantic comedies. An unnamed protagonist hops around the world, searching for zoological oddities (mastodons, auks, lizard people...), but mostly finding doe-eyed young women and hilarious calamity.This is H.R. Haggard without the pomp - a series of oddly enjoyable reads that show that, when he bothered trying, Chambers was perfectly capable of combining imagination and populist entertainment.

I don't remember why I got this book but I tend to read a lot of old, strange tales, and the price was right (free) so that is what probably attracted me to it in the first place. This book was comical and oddly strange, we follow a young man who works for the Bronx Zoo and is an ornithologist, he gets sent on exotic travels around the world by his job and has strange adventures in search of odd and extinct animals that are supposed to exist. He can never quite realize his goal, but always finds a pretty girl to admire even though he never gets her. Yes, the writing is a bit dated, but still entertaining. I also think it was one of the most unusual books I have ever read.

Putting Boomerang Creek on Your Map By Susan Fifer Canby Reading "Notes from Boomerang Creek" by Cathy Salter is to sit with a cup of good coffee and fresh warm buttery croissant and linger over the observations and thoughts of a well read, well travelled, culturally aware wanderer. It took me a year to finish this book, because I so loved the luxury of reading one saga at a time...not gobbling it down at one sitting, particularly since it was compiled over a period of ten years.I loved taking the time to delight in the richness of Cathy's voice that so deftly interweaves her travel, reading, gardening and culinary experiences to produce a rich tapestry of seemingly simple stories that celebrate family and friendships, seasons of life, local and world events, the natural world, the dance... all written in perfect bite sized pieces.In the sensitive observations and descriptions of geographer/teacher Cathy Salter, the unlikely Missouri landscape of rural Boomerang Creek becomes peopled with characters and events that long warm the reader's memories.

Images drawn from nature, literature, travel and daily life are woven into short essays that capture the essence of deeper truths. The individual pieces are impeccably written, each with its own internal logic, its own reason for being, while taken together, they testify to the enduring humanity of the author, Cathy Salter. It isn't long before you begin to see the casual encounters and background details of your own world in a different light. Highly recommended.
