3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Sacred and Profane Love By James Paris There is a Jean-Luc Godard segment in one of those compilation films so popular in Europe during the 1960s. Imagine a high class brothel of the future -- located, as I recall, at an airport. The client requests an assignation and draws a prostitute who all but rapes him. He tries to open a conversation with her, but she is all action and no talk. The client protests to the management and draws another one who dresses in frills like a character from Jane Austen and recites romantic poetry. You've probably already guessed what happens: This one is all talk and no action.I yield to no one in my admiration of Balzac, whom I consider one of the greatest story-tellers of all time. It is very obvious that the character of Madame Blanche-Henriette de Mortsauf meant something special to the author in his life: Her piety and fine-tuned sensibility, however, don't come across well in our time. Women who suffer endlessly and fritter their lives away in sighs tend to give rise to a frustrated "Oh, come off it already!"The opposite of Mme de Mortsauf is the fascinating Arabelle, Marchionesse of Dudley, who conquers the narrator, Felix de Vandenesse, and keeps him in thrall with "caresses never before enjoyed by any man." Alas, Balzac uses the multi-talented Arabelle primarily as a warning to all Frenchmen how cold-hearted the British are. We are tantalized but far from fulfilled.Call me a dirty old man, if you will, but I would rather that Balzac and Felix spent more time with Dudley and a whole lot less with Mme de Mortsauf. As it is, the latter dies horribly of her excessive sensibility, and Felix walks away from her grave resolved to live a life of which the angelic Mme de Mortsauf would have approved. We all know that Balzac made no such resolution in his own life. Despite his monkish pretensions, the author spent all his life pursuing women. When, after a multi-year courtship, he finally snared his Countess, he died within a year.It sounds as if I did not like LILY OF THE VALLEY. Far from it, I liked it a great deal; but do not see it as one of the author's more successful works. And yet, even at his worst, Balzac is better than most writers at their best, as when Felix muses "I loved an angel and a demon, equally beautiful, one of them adorned with all the virtues which hatred of our imperfections induces us to hurt; the other with all the vices which our selfishness prompts us to deify." Read it and judge for yourself.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. beautiful love story By sally tarbox This was apparently Balzac's favourite work and I can see why. It's written as a letter from a young man to his lover who has demanded to know his past. Felix has a sad early life, rejected by his mother (a theme Balzac refers to in 'a woman of thirty'). But he then meets the beautiful Mme de Mortsauf and the developing love between them- maternal at first, later passionate, yet at her insistence always chaste- forms the main part of the book. The description of the Mortsauf family with the irascible, almost insane husband, who makes his wife's life so hard, and the two fragile children, and of the Touraine countryside are exquisite. The years of unfulfilled love roll by and Felix falls prey to a sensuous Englishwoman, causing much torment to his true love. 'Lady Arabelle was the mistress of the flesh; Mme de Mortsauf was the wife of the spirit'. It's a beautiful book and finishes with a short response from Felix's lover to his revelations...Balzac at his best.

Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed. I found it to be vague and repetitive. I cannot recommend this book; I wish I hadn't spent money on it.

"[...]other pieces, he produced at this period the inimitable poem of Tam O’Shanter. Johnson’s Miscellany was also indebted to him for the finest of its lyrics. One pleasing trait of his character must not be overlooked. He superintended the formation of a subscription library in the parish, and took the whole management of it upon himself. These institutions, though common now, were not so short at the period of which we write; and it should never be forgotten that Burns was amongst the first, if not the very first, of their founders in the rural districts of southern Scotland. Towards the close of 1791 he finally abandoned his farm; and obtaining an appointment to the Dumfries division of excise, he repaired to that town on a salary of £70 per annum. All his principal biographers concur in stating that after settling in Dumfries his moral career was downwards. Heron, who had some acquaintance with the matter, says, “His dissipation became still more deeply habitual; he was here more exposed than in the country to be solicited to share the revels of the dissolute and the idle; foolish young men flocked eagerly about him, and from time to time pressed him to drink with them, that they might enjoy his wit. The Caledonia Club, too, and the Dumfries-shire and Galloway Hunt,[...]".

"[...]in the Ancient Mariner; but these flicker and go out. The style would be laughable in its simplicity if there were not in it some almost awing touch of innocence; some hint of that divine goodness which, in Lamb, needed the relief and savour of the later freakishness to sharpen it out of insipidity. There is already a sense of what is tragic and endearing in earthly existence, though no skill as yet in presenting it; and the moral of it is surely one of the morals or messages of Elia: 'God has built a brave world, but methinks he has left his creatures to bustle in it how they may.' Lamb had no sense of narrative, or, rather, he cared in a story only for the moments when it seemed to[...]".

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. One century in particular By Christopher (o.d.c.) Publication date: 1916Arthur Symons was a poet and critic, a minor Decadent, somewhat looked down upon by Oscar Wilde and Max Beerbohm. It is hard to escape the notion that he was the model for Enoch Soames: a memory of the eighteen-nineties.The essays are arranged chronologically by subject, and so one must linger a few centuries over Saint Augustine, John Donee, Casanova, Emily Bronte and Edgar Allan Poe before Mr. Symons really begins to get interesting. Coventry Patmore may be about 1/10,000 as important as Saint Augustine, but Symons's personal recollections of this older minor poet have a freshness and interest no one can attain about Augustine and other 'greats.' His essay on Walter Pater is likewise intimate and revealing:... Of De Quincey he spoke with an admiration which I had difficulty in sharing, and I remember his showing me with pride a set of his works bound in half-parchment, with pale gold lettering on the white backs, and with the cinnamon edges which he was so fond of. Of Flaubert we rarely met without speaking. He thought Julien l'Hospitalier as perfect as anything he had done. L'Education Sentimentale was one of the books which he advised me to read; that, and Le Rouge et le Noir of Stendhal; and he spoke with particular admiration of two episodes in the former, the sickness and the death of the child. Of the Goncourts he spoke with admiration tempered by dislike. Their books often repelled him, yet their way of doing things seemed to him just the way things should be done; and done before almost any one else.Or consider this reflection, prompted by a quote from a letter:'I send this prompt answer, for I know by experience that when I delay my delays are apt to be lengthy.' A review took him sometimes a year to get through; and remained in the end, like his letters, a little cramped, never finished to the point of ease, like his published writings.

Each new chapter is purposefully connected with the previous chapter for a gradual accrual of knowledge from simple to more complex concepts—this effective, cumulative approach to statistics through logical transitions eases students into statistics and prepares them for success in more advanced quantitative coursework and their own research.

Review “This book does an admirable job of presenting the rationale for the formulas, which should help the student understand the material more deeply. Additionally, the examples used by the author do a nice job of helping students walk through the process of applying the formulas to address research hypotheses.” (Arin M. Connell)“I have been impressed with the author’s ability to explain statistical constructs in a straightforward manner.” (James E. Lennon)

I have never been a strong math student; I have always had trouble making sense of numbers and received a D in my spring 2015 stats course.I have always used my textbook for math classes to copy down the problem and attempt to make the answer match the one in the back, praying that the homework only consisted of odd numbered problems because they were the only answers provided. Straightforward Statistics is written unlike any math textbook I have ever used. This textbook allowed me to conceptualize the statistical concepts we learned by providing relevant example problems and very clearly breaking down the different procedures introduced in each chapter. Each chapter thoroughly covers a concept or statistical test in a way that breaks down to WHY you would use it as well as how to do so. The beginning of each chapter clearly states what the reader is expected to gain from it. Throughout the chapter are “pop quizzes” and awesome note bubbles that point out: things to focus on, the author’s insights on a certain procedure, and hints on how to look at problems differently. The end of the chapter provides: a concise recap of the method learned (written in a way that someone with ZERO stats experience could totally grasp), a list of key terms and definitions and a learning assessment with a variety of problems to test your understanding.I have never before had any reason to enjoy reading a math book, nor have I ever felt the need to write a review of one. This book reads like a narrative, not an endless list of equations to memorize. After using this textbook in my inferential statistics course I was shocked to discover that I not only understood the material, but I absolutely loved learning about it. I finished my fall 2015 semester with a solid B in statistics (and it COULD have been an A if I had managed my time properly on our first exam!).I am currently in my final semester of my undergraduate degree. My major is psychology. My initial graduate and professional plans/goals focused mainly on studying behavior and learning and expanding upon different psychological theories. After learning to view statistics with the same enthusiasm and love as the author so obviously does, I was forced to allow myself to consider a previously unattainable education route that focuses intensely on analyzing data. Fields such as quantitative psychology and applied behavioral statistics are now in my radar.I always assumed that only those with a genius IQ ever actually enjoyed playing with math, though now I find myself (previously considered BAD at math....) super excited to apply the statistical tests that I learned in this book to various data that I encounter. I am now able to take a seemingly random group of numbers and be confident in my ability to make them mean something; AND completely understand what my results mean and why a specific test is used.I never expected keep a math textbook on my desk and refer to it regularly, sometimes just for fun, to see what the numbers "look like"! I have also never wanted to write over 500 words on how AWESOME I think my math text is. This book allowed me to develop a confidence that I thought was lost in my previous battle with numbers.I am still baffled by how excited I am about statistics. Straightforward Statistics is truly the best textbook I have used for any type of course. I whole-heartedly recommend this book to any and all that are dreading taking a stats course. This book allowed me to broaden my educational interests and for that I am thankful.

By k.anon I selected this book for my students because I liked the explanations and felt it covered more than traditional textbooks (for example, it teaches t-tests for when equal variances are not assumed). I was disappointed in the ANOVA chapter because it does not describe repeated measures or two-factor ANOVA. I already had materials and slides for this and felt this flaw was not enough to select another book. Given how reasonably priced this textbook is, I feel comfortable knowing I am not placing an excessive financial burden on my students. All around, a solid textbook. The two primary criticisms I have are: The ANOVA chapter feels incomplete, and much to my surprise, the student edition has all the answers in the back (not just odd questions). This makes the book less practical for assigning homework from but better for students who wish to get extra practice.
