Sophy of Kravonia, by Anthony Hope

About the Author Anthony Hope (in full Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins) was born in London and educated at Marlborough and at Balliol College, Oxford. He became a lawyer, and dabbled in Liberal politics, but the immediate success of 'The Prisoner of Zenda', his fourth work, turned him entirely to writing. This work and its sequel, 'Rupert of Hentzau', both describe the perilous adventures of the Englishman Rudolph Rassendyll in the mythical kingdom of Ruritania. Anthony Hope successfully published many other novels and plays. He was knighted in 1918 and died in 1933.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. a good old-fashioned story of adventure and romance By DavefromNY not as good as Prisoner of Zenda, but still a good story.would have been so much better if he could have been semi-honest about sex, but as a popular writer in his time, with many young people among his audience, Hope (who wrote for the money) had to pretend that his Sophy lived through all her adventures as a virginHope could never be honest about sex. only in Zenda did the story work fully, because given those unique circumstances it was perfectly credible that his hero would not lay a hand on Princess Flaviain this story, it is just timidity on the author's parthe also missed a good chance by not having her lead her mountaineers to the capital for a victory lap at the end, and THEN maybe withdraw in the face of Austrian interventionwould have made a more satisfying climaxbut I still enjoyed ita reminder of what the world lost of the wonderful old scenes in eastern Europe, destroyed by two World Warshis Kravonia is a cross between Slovenia and Montenegro

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. a great old-fashioned adventure By DavefromNY not to everyone's taste, but if you know some Victorian-era history, the story of how an orphan servant girl becomes briefly queen of a small Balkan state, is well done and even credible. a fun read. only major weakness was the author's inability to be honest about the heroine's love life
