37 of 38 people found the following review helpful. A fascinating voyage through the wonder-years of Quantum Mechanics theory By F. Carter Einstein and the Quantum retells the history of the formulation of modern quantum mechanics, starting with Max Planck's introduction of the quanta and ending with Einstein's famous repudiation of the theory that he helped to build: "God does not play dice...". The reader follows Einstein as he struggles to make sense of the often bizarre way that nature works at very small scales and is treated, along the way, to a fascinating window into the community of physicists who reshaped our understanding of the universe. Most books that cover the birth of modern quantum physics do so in a few whirlwind chapters, briefly paying lip-service to each of the great scientists of that age in turn. Stone's book takes a different course. In following along primarily with Einstein, he captures much of the interaction between the pioneers that is always missing from the traditional bulleted list approach. This reviewer was surprised to find that at every major turn or success during the formative years of quantum mechanics, Einstein is either center stage or playing the role of first supporting actor. Stone does an excellent job of conveying the ethos of a complicated subject in a manner that should be approachable to anyone, yet still interesting to those with a more rigorous scientific background. Although he is heavy on the science, he still manages to sketch out the personal situations behind the scenes of Einstein's scientific career. Stone's writing style tends to read like an academic lecture at times; a fact not surprising, perhaps, given his station as a Yale physics professor. It is, however, a marvelous lecture -- one that will bring the reader back for each new chapter with anticipation, and an eagerness to witness the next step of a world changing event alongside the erstwhile hero of the story: Einstein.

Einstein's penetrating insight By Frank Wang Einstein has been my scientific hero since I was a child, and I have been inspired to conduct research on general relativity and statistical mechanics. To me, it is annoying that many people only know about Einstein's E=m c^2. (Einstein actually wrote m=E/c^2 in 1905, but that's another story.) Through my studies, research and teaching, I gain a more profound understanding of Einstein's multifaceted contributions to physics. The more I learn about Einstein's lesser known works, the more I become fascinated by him. There is a persistent misconception about Einstein's attitude toward quantum theory; even some educated people claim that Einstein rejected quantum mechanics (perhaps to conceal their ignorance). Einstein's penetrating insight revealed the bizarre features of quantum mechanics, and Douglas Stone of Yale University has written a wonderful book to highlight Einstein's seminal contributions to the development quantum theory.There are so many books on Einstein. I noticed this one because of Professor Stone's interesting article for Physics Today in 2005, in which he connected Einstein's 1917 work on old quantization rules to quantum chaos. Here I particularly enjoy the chapter "The Indian Comet" which gives an a detailed account on how Einstein invented quantum statistical mechanics in 1924 after he received a letter from Bose. The succeeding chapter "Quantum Dice" discusses the Bose-Einstein condensation which led to several Nobel Prizes, and Einstein's influence on Schrodinger. It contains a facsimile of Einstein's letter to Schrodinger in which Einstein demonstrated the difference between tossing 2 coins and 2 quantum particles to illustrate the concept of identical particles. Professor Stone has masterfully weaved many interesting facts about Einstein into an eloquent narrative. The book is is informative for me--I consider myself to be well-read. His accounts are accessible to students and general readers as well.

Einstein as a Major Pioneer in Quantum Mechanics By Bart Stuck Albert Einstein has been widely recognized as a major theoretical physicist who had a major impact in developing a unified theory for gravitation beyond Newton called general relativity. He shared the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on relativity. Popular press and physics texts all too often ignore his major contributions to quantum mechanics, starting with Planck's work on black body radiation and continuing for decades: this book rectifies this serious omission, with lively prose that makes physics come to life as a social intellectual discipline with disparate points of view argued vividly yet always returning to experimental tests for scientific hypotheses to back up assertions. In fact, Einstein would argue he spent far more of his waking hours as a theoretical physicist pondering quantum mechanics than relativity. Physics has a social aspect, with strong personalities such as Niels Bohr, Erwin Schroedinger, Werner Heisenberg, Louis de Broglie, Paul A.M. Dirac and many more, in the early days of quantum mechanics, and Einstein engaged significantly with all of them to shape the self consistent theoretical underpinnings. This led over the second half of the twentieth century to the commercialization of semiconductor devices based on quantum mechanics, moving electrons in transistor radios and increasingly today photons in lasers for fiber optic communications and digital storage et al, that made cost effective computers and communications. The author never loses sight that this is a fun book: you can see the glee as participants enjoy their profession, and are genuinely excited about creating new physical theories to explain phenomena such as wave/particle duality and action at a distance/entanglement that continue to this day.
