Lawrence Publishers who are turning ancient works by Plato, Aristotle and the like into Kindle books need to get something straight. It's impossible to converse about these works or make reference to a passage without the edition page numbers such as Stephanus numbers (for Plato). Please scan the Stephanus numbers, otherwise this is nearly useless. Furthermore, for most of these ancient works, which are cheap to free on Kindle, the translator is not cited. This particular translation gets across most of the meaning of the dialog, but is quite off in some places. For instances, sophro^ne^s and sophro^sune^ were both translated as 'wisdom'. It's important with Plato especially to not take any of the words in Greek for granted.

ALCIBIADES: That is true.SOCRATES: The reason was that I loved you for your own sake, whereas other men love what belongs to you; and your beauty, which is not you, is fading away, just as your true self is beginning to bloom. And I will never desert you, if you are not spoiled and deformed by the Athenian people; for the danger which I most fear is that you will become a lover of the people and will be spoiled by them.Jowett doubted this work's authenticity, and included it in an appendix to his translation of Plato. In antiquity and during the Renaissance, however, it was highly regarded (Plutarch and Shakespeare both allude to it) and its neglect in the 19th and 20th Centuries stems from a misunderstanding of the work. For the arguments by which Alcibiades is reformed are not convincing; the writer of the dialogue, whoever he was, arrives at his idealism by crooked and tortuous paths, in which many pitfalls are concealed..."To which one could start by asking, doesn't Socrates boast sound ironic? By Stephen G This review is for both the kindle edition and the paperback printed by Dunda Books, both translated by Benjamin Jowett.I'm actually very pleased with both editions of the same text that I have. While I suppose the lack of citation numbers might trouble those using the book for purely academic purposes, for those reading it for more inward philosophical purposes, the translation itself is quite nice, and the text is very readable.Alcibiades I is largely ignored by most people these days. The textbooks I've read and courses I've attended always seem to focus on the more popular works of Plato such as the Apology, Republic, or Euthyphro. While more than a few scholars conclude Alcibiades I is not a genuine work of Plato, in the Hellenistic era it was not only regarded as genuine, but was considered the essential dialogue for beginners to read.Regardless of whether or not Plato wrote the text, it is clearly a product of his school of thought. I recommend that anyone interested in Plato, Platonism, Middle Platonism, Neoplatonism, or simply just philosophy in general read this short dialogue. It's the perfect introduction to Socrates and his famous questioning, it discusses the nature of the soul, and inspires all readers to that famous Delphic phrase, “Know Thyself.”

About the Author James Fenimore Cooper was a nineteenth-century American author and political critic. Esteemed by many for his Romantic style, Cooper became popular for his depiction of Native Americans in fiction. Before Cooper considered himself a writer, he was expelled from Yale University, served as a midshipman for the United States Navy, and became a gentleman farmer. Cooper wrote many notable works including The Pioneers, The Last of the Mohicans, and The Red Rover, which was adapted and performed on stage in 1828. Cooper passed away in 1851 at the age of 61.

A lackluster prequel to The Last of the Mohicans By Karl Janssen Originally published in 1841, The Deerslayer was the last book written by James Fenimore Cooper in his series of five novels known as the Leatherstocking tales. In terms of the narrative sequence of the series, however, it is chronologically the first installment in the story line. The five historical adventure novels which comprise the Leatherstocking saga all relate episodes in the life of Nathaniel Bumppo, a hunter and trapper in colonial America who, though a white man, lives among the Native Americans. Bumppo is known by many names throughout the five books, but in this first volume he is primarily referred to by the appellation of Deerslayer.The novel takes place in the early 1740s in New York State. Deerslayer and his traveling companion "Hurry Harry" arrive at a secluded, placid lake where resides the Hutter family. Thomas Hutter has built a house on piles in the center of the lake, known as the "castle," where he lives with his two daughters--Judith, who is renowned for her incomparable beauty, and Hetty, who is considered simple-minded. The family also travels the lake's waters in a sort of houseboat called the "ark". While Hurry has come to the lake to court Judith, Deerslayer has come to rendezvous with his friend Chingachgook, a Delaware Indian. At this early point in Deerslayer's life, he is renowned for his hunting skills but has never killed a man. As war has been recently declared between the British and French, along with their Indian allies, the two young friends have come together to embark on their first warpath, in hopes of proving themselves as warriors.The lake is besieged by a band of Huron Indians, who are loyal to the French. They capture members of Deerslayer's party, and he and his remaining companions strive to rescue them. The scope of the story never expands beyond the lake. Characters move back and forth from the castle to the ark to the shore as characters are captured, rescued, or recaptured. It reads very much like an action movie--a sort of 18th century Die Hard--yet its one of the slowest, most tedious adventure tales you'll ever encounter. The action sequences consist of Cooper delineating the trajectory of every boat and bullet with a fastidious attention to detail that dulls much of the excitement. Such scenes are interspersed with long conversations between the characters, which mostly serve the purpose of contrasting their personal philosophies. The last half of the book focuses on an impending doom which threatens Deerslayer, yet, since this is a prequel, the fact of his survival is never really in question.The colonial period of American history is a truly fascinating time, and Cooper is our best literary chronicler of the era. His narrative voice is an enjoyable combination of the skillfully crafted prose of a distinguished man of letters and the campfire tales of a rugged frontiersman. Unfortunately, one wishes he were a better plotter. Unlike his masterpiece The Last of the Mohicans, this novel shows little sign of a preconceived structure. It seems as if Cooper just started with chapter one and made it up as he went along. The result is an awful lot of boring passages and redundant dialogue.Though not a great book in its own right, the true value of The Deerslayer lies in its position within the Leatherstocking saga. Much is revealed about the character of Natty Bumpo--how he fared in his first experience with combat, how he earned the name of "Hawkeye," and how he acquired his famous rifle Killdeer. Cooper deeply delves into the Deerslayer's personal moral philosophy, which resembles a sort of frontier Samurai code. The five Leatherstocking books unquestionably constitute a monumental achievement in American literature. The Deerslayer is certainly not the best book in the series, but in light of its being part of a greater whole it does deserve to be read.

24 of 29 people found the following review helpful. Not Cooper's Best Effort.... By Jonathan B. Sims Had "Deerslayer" been James Fenimore Cooper's first "Leatherstocking" tale -- who knows? Maybe it would have been his last! But his mythic hero, Nathaniel Bumppo (a.k.a. Natty, Deerslayer, The Long Carrabine, Hawkeye, et. al.)had such a mid-19th Century following that Cooper was practically guaranteed an eager, receptive audience for his tales.I won't say straight out that "Deerslayer" is a terrible book. If nothing else, Donald Pease's introductory essay informs us of several plot complexities that are intertwined with Cooper's personal life, such as the re-invention of Natty Bumppo to buttress and justiry Cooper's real-life legal property claims. But, if "Deerslayer" is not a terrible book, it is for hundreds of pages something less than scintillating. Why? I think it comes down to this. Patient readers can endure quite a lot of moralizing, or wide swaths of verbosity. But put the two together and it's hard to endure.The story takes place on Cooper's real-life ancestral home, Lake Otsego in mid-upstate New York (my friends tell me the pronunciation is "Otsaga" with a short "a") where we first encounter a youthful Natty Bumppo and his unlikely fellow traveler, Harry "Hurry" March, an indestructible, Paul Bunyonesque figure whose credo can be summarized as "might makes right." Natty (given the sobriquet, Deerslayer, by his adopted Delaware tribe) has arrived at the lake to join his companion, Chingachgook, (the "Serpant"), in his quest to liberate his future bride, Wah-ta-Wah, who was kidnapped by a band of Huron Indians. Harry March has come to the lake to capture the heart of Judith Hutter, who along with her father, Thomas, and simple-minded sister, Hetty, live on the lake, occupying either a floating ark or a fortress-like structure built upon the lake.Eventually, the Hutters are surrounded by dozens of fierce Huron warriors, who are on the warpath during the opening days of the mid-18th Century French & Indian Wars. Seemingly, it was all there for Cooper to capitalize on: just a handful of isolated white settlers, whose only protection from scalp-seeking, torture-minded skulking Hurons is a crank sailing craft or a lake home on stilts. But Cooper rejects his own dramatic setting to stage a morality play, and a heavy-handed one at that.A word about the Hutter sisters. Diametrically opposed siblings are at least as old as the Bible, and Cooper employed them in several novels, including "The Last of the Mohicans" and "The Spy" (far superior works than "Deerslayer".) Hetty is Cooper's example of purity and innocence, but we can leave her to the Hurons, who display an admirable level of respect and reverence for the frail-minded girl. I suspect she would have fared much better in the hands of so-called savages than in the typical 18th Century colonial settlement. It is her vain, beautiful and high-tempered older sister, Judith, whose character is of more interest, and requires in my opinion a little rehabilitation.It is never made explicit by Cooper (no doubt it would have scandalized his audience) but I think it's fair to say that Judith Hutter -- much to her regret later on -- granted her last favors to at least one colonial British officer (maybe several.) And, if this is a mis-reading of the text, she most certainly did "something" to set the colonial tongues a wagging. Whatever her "failings", they would not be recognized as such by modern day readers (perhaps her vanity and self-centeredness would go unnoticed as well.) There was, however, little tolerance for a Judith Hutter in the 18th Century, and Cooper would have never permitted Natty Bumppo -- young, virginal and selfless -- to fall in love with this high-spirited young woman. (Besides, it would not have chronologically tied in with his future exploits.)But I'm not entirely convinced. Judith Hutter possesses several admirable traits, not the least of which is intelligence, bravery and a certain loving devotion to her frail sister. She also recognizes Natty Bumppo's virtues, as well as her own faults, and is more than willing to embrace the former and cast off the latter. Her love for Natty is obvious for hundreds of pages, but somehow he doesn't quite get it! In the end, the girl must swallow her pride and make explicit what even modern day women would find nearly unthinkable -- she makes an outright marriage proposal. Alas, Natty Bumppo is simply "too good" for her.To use a modern day expression, Cooper is over the top with the virtuous Natty Bumppo. At some point, self-abnegation is just another form of narcissism -- only more complex than the garden variety of narcissism possessed by Judith Hutter (and other mere mortals.) In his introductory essay, Donald Pease points out that the rejection of Judith Hutter balances the brutal rejection Natty Bumppo receives at the hands of Mabel Dunham in an earlier Leatherstocking tale, "The Pathfinder". Maybe. But consider this. To honor his parole from the Hurons, Natty Bumppo chooses torture over Judith Hutter. And, ultimately, he chooses a famous rifle over her -- a gift she lovingly gives to him in recognition of how much he would appreciate such a weapon. It comes down to this: torture and guns over Judith Hutter! Hmmm.... I'll leave that one for modern day psychologists.I've given "Deerslayer" three stars because Cooper is, after all, one of our nation's early literary masters, and "Deerslayer" is not without its moments. There's a wonderful give-and-take scene between Natty Bumppo and the Huron Chief, Rivenoak, as they negotiate the release of Thomas Hutter and Harry March. (My advice to modern day corporations: don't bother with negotiation consultants -- save your money and read Chapter 14.) And for those who still believe in the right of every American to bear arms, take it from the author who created our nation's first true literary sharpshooter. There's a haunting, prescient admonishment about leaving loaded guns lying about the house (pages 219-220.)

By nto62 Cooper's final Leatherstocking Tale, The Deerslayer, depicts young Natty Bumppo on his first warpath with lifelong friend-to-be, Chingachgook. The story centers around a lake used as the chronologically subsequent setting for Cooper's first Leatherstocking Tale, The Pioneers. Tom Hutter lives on the lake with his daughters and it is here that Deerslayer (Bumppo) intends to meet Chingachgook to rescue Chingachgook's betrothed from a band of roving Iroquois. A desperate battle for control of the lake and it's immediate environs ensues and consumes the remainder of the story.Throughout this ultimate Leatherstocking Tale, Cooper provides Natty much to postulate upon. Seemingly desiring a comprehensive finality to the philosophy of Bumppo, Cooper has Natty "speechify" in The Deerslayer more so than in any other book, though the character could hardly be considered laconic in any. Though the reason for this is obvious and expected (it is, after all, Cooper's last book of the series), it still detracts a tad from the pace of the story as Natty picks some highly inappropriate moments within the plot to elaborate his position. And, thus, somewhat incongruently, Cooper is forced to award accumulated wisdom to Bummpo at the beginning of his career rather than have him achieve it through chronological accrual.All things considered, however, The Deerslayer is not remarkably less fun than any other Leatherstalking Tale and deserves a similar rating. Thus, I award The Deerslayer 4+ stars and the entire Leatherstocking Tales series, one of the better examples of historical fiction of the romantic style, the ultimate rating of 5. It was well worth my time.

Great Story By Myra Hotchkiss In a time when virtue and character were still appreciated and sought after, an actress wasn't quite the person to be allowed into the inner circle. Nor was it quite the thing to be involved with a "working" girl, one of those unfortunate women who had no man paying the bills. This is the story of how winding paths through life work out. A great story.

Falvey This was a great story to get wrapped in to without having to think about it too much and was more subtle than most romances. Really it is a drama about a group of friends more than a romance. I recommend this to women, definitely not a man's book. This version is repeat with typos but they are easily overcome by looking at the context.

Detailed and long but iteresting By Amazon Customer Quite detailed papers about various topics related to quantum physics; some of them describe connections with the metaphysical and paranormal phenomena from a scientific standpoint and most include descriptions of relationships with consciousness. There's a lot of mind-blowing stuff in these papers about time and how quantum physics necessarily means there can be future events affecting the present and the past and the observer's role in time perspectives, etc. I certainly did not understand everything but I did read it all and many of the scientific explanations are intriguing. There are conflicting theories and many present redundant views; one very lengthy paper was admittedly quite circuitous and the author kept repeating himself, which could have been edited down to a much shorter version. This book is a collection by numerous authors, who all present numerous references.I would not classify this as light reading and many readers may not enjoy this sort of book. It was obviously written for other than the layperson so be prepared to not understand a lot of this if you are not a not a classical physicist but I don't think you have to understand all the physics completely in order to enjoy the implications of many of the theories. Maybe some of this actually narrows the span between the individual and the cosmos, between the metaphysical and the scientific, between the material and the spiritual. Maybe, if even some of this is true, we might, in fact, be connected to everything else, to something larger than ourselves, and maybe there is somewhere to be found the elusive theory of everything that Einstein and others have quested for for so long.

Interesting but potentially confusing By Martin Fricke Adding to the commendable review here, "Detailed and long but interesting", I would note that the terminology in the 30 separate papers is not entirely consistent, which adds to any confusion about the different viewpoints and arguments expressed. It is unfortunate that some final chapter was not assembled by a few of the most prominent authors, including in particular Roger Penrose, to integrate and summarize the principal points of consensus.

By Hong Ha Thi Nguyen This is a really good book which explains a lot about consciousness and quantum physics. I received this book as a gift and it is fascinating. Its divided into different sections on different topics. It begins with two chapters written by Deepak Chopra and his colleagues, and they give a great overview of his philosophy about the spooky world of quantum physics. The chapters that follow are really good and describe how consciousness, the act of observing can change reality, and how consciousness might be linked to the universe; the cosmology of consciousness. The next Section goes into evolution of consciousness and the brain, and there are chapters about cave paintings from the Paleolithic and how the cave paintings represent the constellations and the stars of the universe. Roger Penrose explains how the brain acts like a quantum computer and is plugged into the universe. There are also really interesting chapters which explain how different areas of the brain are linked to different types of consciousness. The really spooky stuff is how time might be a circle where the future can effect the present, through entanglement, where everything is connected. There are several fascinating chapters about paranormal experiences and the connections to multiple universe and parallel universes. The second half of the book is more difficult that the first, but its worth the read. I think, if you want to understanding consciousness, and quantum physics, this is probably the best book out there.

What is unique was his ability to recall his journey through illness with such clarity and detachment, then to strategically manage not only his cure but the movement he founded. Beers was an otherwise common man, obsessed by an uncommon drive in extraordinary circumstances. In "A Mind that Found Itself" he bequeathed to those with mental illness, their families, and advocates, insight into mental health and treatment that would unite science and humanitarianism as never before."A Mind That Found Itself" is Beers' personal journey from tragedy, through adversity, to an epiphany of purpose and conviction to see it through. At first, the reader cannot help but pity him as the persistent dread Beers experiences gives way to delusion and, ultimately, a suicide attempt that adds physical suffering to his already anguished mind. But this is also the story of institutional life at the time. From August 1900 until September 1903 Beers was hospitalized in three different institutions. His experiences offended his sense of justice. They galvanized in him a resolve to rescue those who were at the mercy of untrained attendants and reform the system that held them captive.By all accounts, Clifford Whittingham Beers had a normal childhood. The fourth of five children, his problems began when an older brother was thought to have contracted epilepsy and died. Beers obsessed that he, too, would suffer the same fate. He had hallucinations, delusions and manic-depressive episodes. Today his condition would probably have been diagnosed early and managed with counseling and a once-a-day pill.In 1900, however, mental illness was not well understood and tolerated even less. It was the birth of the Industrial Age and America was, after all, a nation of independent people and a laissez-faire economy. It was widely accepted that the individual who pursued his own self-interest would contribute best to society as a whole. Mental illness was a failure of breeding, of will, or of faith, and blight on the family name. Beers himself notes, "What they could not understand they would seldom tolerate."At the turn of the 20th century in America, it was not uncommon for mental patients to be restrained, cast away in solitude, and treated much the same as criminals. Relatives, albeit sometimes reluctantly, abandoned them to the so-called professionals "who knew best." As Beers wrote, they thought that paying "a considerable sum of money each week would ensure kindly treatment" of their family member. It did not. More revenue only enhanced profit; more profit begat even greater profit. To wit, Beers relates the hiring of an unskilled, inexperienced "tramp" to provide direct care to a suffering terminal patient. Men willing to work for "the paltry wage of $18 a month" seldom attracted competent workers. Beatings, forced feedings, and mechanical restraints were common. After all, these techniques were "cost effective" in the unregulated institutions.An assertion of self righteous contempt for contemptible authority is little comfort when that authority asserts itself. Consequences follow risks. Most often, Beers was prepared for the consequences and managed his risk taking in such a way that he saw and experienced what others would not; what others could not grasp, or tell. Sometimes, reality hit with brute force. Lesson learned. But this time the story would be told.Beers published "A Mind That Found Itself" in 1908. Also that year, he founded the Connecticut Society for Mental Hygiene; in 1909 the National Committee for Mental Hygiene (in 1950 it was recognized as the National Association for Mental Health in the USA) and in 1931 the International Foundation for Mental Health Hygiene.In the highly respected classic, '"The Mentally Ill In America," Albert Deutsch' credits Beers as "the Founder of the Mental Hygiene Movement" that exposed the lives of the mentally ill and the treatment they received. A self-described `mental incompetent,' Beers awoke the conscience of his community, and then the world, to the fact that to begin to respect the lives of the mentally ill one only need first to look in the mirror. Such was his genius.

Very beautiful book about Spiritual Life By Leandro Meinhardt This is a very beautiful book, giving a better, even though old (1688-1772), and more current vision about our responsibilities. It is full of the most essential teachings, not just to be a Christian, but to be human, the kind of human God intended us to be. I love this book and you would too.

Absolutely brilliant By Peter Jochinger To help understand the works from this author this book has the best of all the modern day translations of his works.It should be the stepping stone to his other works.The detailed narrative to the Ten Commandments are a delight to read.The importance of understanding the Bible is explained in a unique way. This makes the book very enjoyable as it highlights the impotance of the Word in it's truest form.This book is a real treasure and food for the soul.

MICHAEL SAMONAS is a finance professional with extensive experience in Financial Planning, Analysis and Modelling. He is currently the Group CFO of SIDMA S.A, a member of Viohalco Group of companies. Gottlob Frege's Grundgesetze der Arithmetik, or Basic Laws of Arithmetic, was intended to be his magnum opus, the book in which he would finally establish his logicist philosophy of arithmetic. But because of the disaster of Russell's Paradox, which undermined Frege's proofs, the more mathematical parts of the book have rarely been read. Richard G. Heck, Jr., aims to change that, and establish it as a neglected masterpiece that must be placed at the center of Frege's philosophy. Part I of Reading Frege's Grundgesetze develops an interpretation of the philosophy of logic that informs Grundgesetze, paying especially close attention to the difficult sections of Frege's book in which he discusses his notorious 'Basic Law V' and attempts to secure its status as a law of logic. Part II examines the mathematical basis of Frege's logicism, explaining and exploring Frege's formal arguments. Heck argues that Frege himself knew that his proofs could be reconstructed so as to avoid Russell's Paradox, and presents Frege's arguments in a way that makes them available to a wide audience. 0 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Magisterial By Flash Sheridan I’ve been eagerly (though sporadically) reading this work, so far up to chapter 9. The publication of the translation of the _Grundgesetze_ itself has sidetracked me temporarily, but Amazon’s robots have been nagging me to review this on the grounds that no-one else has done so. So I’ll note the obvious, that this is a magisterial work of enormous benefit to anyone who is, or will be, reading one of the greatest achievements of the human intellect, and I’m outraged at the academic(s) who delayed it by telling Professor Heck that he wouldn’t get tenure if he worked on Frege. [footnote three of preface]    Much as I’m enjoying it, I do have a few presentational quibbles. The general comment is that I would have appreciated more foreshadowing; sometimes when the author makes a comment about the point to a proof I’ve just struggled through, I would have liked to know the point before the struggle, e.g., at the end of §6.7, and the top of p. 222. Slightly more substantively (but only slightly), the elucidation of (56) on p. 147 is in a slightly different order from the formula elucidated, transposing two conjuncts in the middle line. By Gio The 'Reverberator' is not, as some readers might feverishly suppose, a hand-held device for erotic auto-stimulation, nor is it one of those fashionable quivery armchairs. No, it's the name on the masthead of an American tabloid, a racy gossip sheet, for which Mr. George Flack is the Parisian correspondent. The only vibrations you'll experience while reading this 1888 novella will be the shaking of your sides at Henry James's wry satire. Mr. Flack is the driving anti-hero of this tale, a prophetic verbal 'paparazzo' of sensationalist journalism, a man with a vision of the vulgar times we have to admit to be ours; speaking to a young woman he hopes to impress, he says: "You ain't going to be able any longer to monopolize any fact of general interest, and it ain't going to be right you should; it ain't going to be possible to keep out anywhere the light of the Press... We'll see who's private then, and whose hands are off, and who'll frustrate the people -- the People that wants to know. That's a sign of the American people that they do want to know..." Mr Flack is the obnoxious harbinger of People Magazine, and of the politics of exposé and outright defamations that degrades American democracy today. The changing societal modes of privacy versus publicity are central themes of the two novellas James published together in his mid career, "The Reverberator" and "A London Life".All the principal characters of The Reverberator are Americans in Paris. Mr. Flack's object of admiration is the winsome Francie Dosson, in Paris with her plain but ambitious older sister Delia and their wealthy retired father. The Dossons, to put it plainly, are rubes. Mr. Dosson is as culturally and intellectually blank as John Locke's slate; his only claim to any specific personhood has been his knack for making money through investments. Delia is 'horridly' declassé, vulgar to her toes. Francie is unaccountably beautiful and graceful, but she is exactly what modern observers would call an "airhead". Flack introduces her to yet another American in Paris, the 'rising' impressionist painter Waterlow, for whom Francie agrees to pose though she finds his paintings bizarre. At Waterlow's studio, another 'American' enters the story: Gaston Probert, the scion of a Catholic family that migrated to France from the Carolinas in flight from abolition and democracy. The Proberts have wealth, still based in America, and have married into the staunchly reactionary French Legitimist aristocracy. They are the stiffest of snobs, but young Gaston is at sea over his own identity, unsure of his true national character and of his manly worth on the terms of either culture. Each character in this novella is simultaneously a stinging caricature and yet a perfectly plausible individual. The romantic tussle that results from their chance encounter reveals each of them to be exactly who they seem, even when they aren't quite capable of knowing themselves.The Reverberator is a brilliant study of characters and a well-paced comic tale. Henry James's wit, to be sure, often takes the form of syntactical feints and pirouettes. Ah reckin thet sorta wit ain't fer ev'body ... and perhaps this accounts for the diffuse prejudice among readers today that James is a 'difficult' writer, more work than play. It's not so. "The Reverberator" and its companion "A London Life" are highly entertaining, even as they dig psychologically under the surface of ordinary human relations.

By mojosmom In our time, socialites, celebrities and people "famous for being famous" hire publicists and are content to have their private lives made fodder for the public press. Indeed, they are often complicit in the revelation of the most intimate details of their lives and seem to agree with the saying that "no publicity is bad publicity".Henry James would be shocked. Simon Nowell-Smith points out in his introduction to my edition of this novel James' reaction to a public report of a private conversation between Julian Hawthorne and James Russell Lowell; he called it a "beastly and blackguardly betrayal". But he took an incident in which a young American who had been admitted into Venetian society wrote an account of that society for a New York newspaper, and was widely excoriated in Venice for so doing, and turned it into this charming novel.The Dossons, father and two daughters, serious Delia and flighty Francie, are Americans in Paris. Coming over, they had made the acquaintance of George Flack, a journalist whose job is to find stories for an American 'society-paper'. He has attached himself to the Dossons, showing them Paris, while smoking Mr. Dosson's cigars, spending his money, and having a flirtation with Francie. He introduces her to the expatriate Impressionist portraitist, Charles Waterlow (possibly based on John Singer Sargent?) who begins to paint her portrait. During the sittings, she meets a young man, Gaston Probert, an American who had never been in America, having been born and raised in France, his father a "Gallomaniac", his sisters having married into French society (two into the nobility). Inevitably, Francie and Gaston fall in love, and, after her charm overcomes some familial objections of the Proberts, they become engaged.All is going swimmingly, Francie is taken into the bosom of the Proberts, learning the ways of French society, until Gaston heads to the United States to take care of some business for his family, as well as for Mr. Dosson. While he is away, George Flack re-appears. One lesson Francie has not learned is that a young engaged woman does not go out alone with a young man who is not her betrothed. But she takes the view that Flack is an old acquaintance and what's the harm? The harm turns out to be that he, by judicious questioning and saying he merely wants to write about Waterlow's painting of her, sets her chattering about her fiancé's family, and the resultant newspaper story causes a storm. Francie still cannot quite understand the harm she has done. "I thought he would just speak about my being engaged and give a little account; so many people in America would be interested." What she doesn't grasp is that the Proberts do not want "people in America" (or France, for that matter) to be interested in their private lives."The Reverberator" was first written as a serial in early 1888, and published in book form shortly thereafter. James extensively revised it twenty years later, but my edition is that of the 1888 book. Nowell-Smith's introduction, which compares this and the later edition, shows that the revisions were not an improvement! The ease of language here, very different from James' later "tortuosity of expression", perfectly expresses the wide-eyed naïveté of Francie.

Schneider She seemed to be doing nothing as hard as she could.The problem with this short novel from the 1880s is that there are no real people in it, only shadow lines of 2 dimensions. Between two fat novels (Princess Casamassima and Tragic Muse), James apparently felt obliged (publisher's pressure?) to produce something shorter and funnier. He did and some readers have liked it, but I can't quite warm up to it.Usually, James' strength was in his psychological finesse, which could make me see an interest in people and problems that I might otherwise ignore. He does not achieve that here. Also, in general I like his shorter pieces better, but Francie and Gaston have left me cold. James' women are a subject of their own, and there is a lot of variation among them, but I can't remember any heroine as uninteresting as Francie. Nor any main male as boring as Gaston.We have an encounter of 2 families in Paris, both of American origin, both, oddly, without mother. A wealthy man from Boston travels Europe with 2 daughters, a bossy but ugly one and a pretty but mindless one. A Frenchified resident family, whose wealth is based on property in Carolina, consists of a snobbish aging father, a do-nothing son, and 3 daughters married to various French aristocrats.The do-nothing son and the pretty but mentally flat daughter get entangled, but even that happens without much excitement. The excitement comes from a slip by the girl: she tells some family secrets to a failed suitor who works for an American scandal press product. That complicates things for a while, as the yellow press usually will. If the yellow press were more in the forefront of the story, the novel might be more interesting. As it is, I can't find it very funny.
