About the Author Howard Pyle (1853-1911) was an American illustrator and writer, primarily of books for young audiences. A native of Wilmington, Delaware, he spent the last year of his life in Florence, Italy. In 1894 he began teaching illustration at the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry (now Drexel University), and after 1900 he founded his own school of art and illustration called the Howard Pyle School of Illustration Art. The term the Brandywine School was later applied to the illustration artists and Wyeth family artists of the Brandywine region by Pitz (later called the Brandywine School). Some of his more famous students were Olive Rush, N. C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, Elenore Abbott, Ellen Bernard Thompson Pyle, Allen Tupper True, and Jessie Willcox Smith. His 1883 classic The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood remains in print to this day, and his other books, frequently with medieval European settings, include a four-volume set on King Arthur that cemented his reputation. He wrote an original work, Otto of the Silver Hand, in 1888. He also illustrated historical and adventure stories for periodicals such as Harper's Weekly and St. Nicholas Magazine. His Men of Iron was made into a movie in 1954, The Black Shield of Falworth. Pyle travelled to Florence, Italy to study mural painting in 1910, and died there in 1911 of sudden kidney infection (Bright's Disease).

(Referring to Kindle edition).Howard Pyle was the first person in the modern era to collect all the Robin Hood ballads that had come down from the midieval era and put them into a modern format, structured as stories and so forth. Essentially every version of Robin Hood in the past century has drawn on Howard Pyle's Robin Hood as its major source, and reading this book is the best way to understand why the minor characters in (for example) Kevin Costner's "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves" are named things like "Will Scarlet" or "Much the Miller's Son."I was given this book to read as a child, and it was and still is one of my all-time favorites (although I always avoided reading the final chapter, which is sad enough that Pyle even warns his readers about it). The elevated, pseudo-elizabethan style even helped me later on -- when I got to Shakespeare in school, the language was easy for me, because I'd been reading Howard Pyle since I was eight.The problem with this ebook version is that it doesn't contain the illustrations, though. And that's simply unforgivable. Howard Pyle is today better known as an illustrator than as a writer. He was the art teacher who taught people like Arthur Rackham and N.C. Wyeth. His illustrations are immensely rich and detailed, and as full of period accuracy and background research as his writing was. It's an unforgivable shame to miss them.Versions of this book can be found online free with illustrations. Don't bother with this version, as it doesn't have them. Reading this book without the illustrations is like taking an oscar-winning film and just listening to the sound with the screen blacked out. You can do it, but why?

This Traditional Literature was written by Howard Pyle. This book is full of action packed adventure. In this book is about an outlaw named Robin Hood that lives in Sherwood Forest. Robin Hood and his merry band of men are very helpful by stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. The sheriff of Nottingham doesn't appreciate Robin Hood's good will. Will they achieve? I think this is a great book because they meet new people, the definitions of Robin is very descriptive. I also think this is a great book is because at one of my family reunion's I saw it at the kid table. I could not put it down. I think this book is great book for people who like action and adventure. This book is for kids and adults of all ages.

The Adventure of a Lifetime By A Customer The Adventure of a Lifetime If you like stories full of action and adventure, then Robin Hood is the book for you! This is a classic book about an archer named Robin Hood who fights against the evil Prince John. The Adventures of Robin Hood begins with the King of England getting captured, and the King's brother taking over the rule of England. The King's brother, Prince John, is a greedy, cowardly, and evil man, but he is now the ruler of England. When Robin Hood finds out that Prince John has been put in charge, he gets angry. Prince John makes the people in the small town of Nottingham pay very high taxes, even though they are very poor. This angers Robin Hood who leads his gang of followers to steal from the rich and give to the poor, to help the poor people of Nottingham. Along the way, one of Robin Hood's friends, Will Scarlet, gets captured, so Robin Hood and the rest of his gang must come to his rescue. This is only one of the exciting events that happens in "Robin Hood". If I were to rank The Adventures of Robin Hood on a scale of 1 of 5, I would give it a 4 ½. Some good things about this book are that it has lots of action and adventure which is my favorite characteristic in a book. An example of this in the book is when Robin Hood and his gang have to rescue Will Scarlet. Another good characteristic of this book, if you like dramatic books, is that there is a love story between Robin Hood and his love, Lady Marian. This book is also quite educational, because it teaches you a lot about the medieval times, the time-period in which this book takes place. The reason that I took the half point off in my ranking of the book is because I found some of the dialogue to be quite confusing. The book takes place in medieval England, and their language is a bit different from modern day language, so that is why I think some of the dialogue is confusing. The protagonist in my book is Robin Hood. In the book, Robin Hood shows us two personalities of his. One personality of his is seen when he is around his best friend, Little John. When he is around Little John, he is laid-back and funny. The other personality comes out when he is leading his group of rebels. When he leads them, some characteristics that he portrays are leadership, intelligence, and aggressiveness. When he shows us the characteristic of aggressiveness, he is on the battlefield, or just fighting off some of Prince John's servants. Robin Hood has many unique characteristics about him. One of them is one that he is famous for, his skill with a bow and arrow. This skill comes into use when fighting off troops of Prince John. Another unique characteristic of Robin Hood is that he is a crook, with good intentions. That is unique because most crooks steal because they are greedy and want everything for themselves, but Robin Hood steals from the rich, and gives it all to the poor, and keeps nothing for himself. One more unique characteristic about Robin Hood is that he is a leader, and he still finds time for a few laughs with Little John, dispite all of the hardships that they must go through in order to help the poor citizens of Nottingham. There are two scenes in Robin Hood that make it an exceptionally good book. One of them is the scene where Robin Hood and his gang rescue Will Scarlet from Prince John. This scene means a lot to the book because it is possibly the best action part of the book. Another thing in the book that I thought was very meaningful was all of the parts in the book where Robin Hood and Little John spend time together, because all of those scenes portray their friendship. It is important in a book to teach about friendship. I think that The Adventures of Robin Hood is a magnificent book, and I would give it a 4 1/2 out of 5 as an overall rating. I would recommend this book to anybody that likes adventure books, particularly people from the ages of 9-15.
