About the Author

Christopher K. Walker is a Professor of Astronomy and an Associate Professor of Optical Sciences and Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Arizona. He has over 30 years of experience designing, building, and using state-of-the-art receiver systems for THz astronomy. He is the author of numerous papers on star formation and protostellar evolution, a topical editor for IEEE Transactions on TeraHertz Science and Technology, and the principal investigator of the long-duration balloon project "The Stratospheric THz Observatory (STO)" funded by NASA.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. and space missions are giving astronomers much better access at terahertz frequencies By Paul Goldsmith The terahertz frequency range denotes the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum between microwaves and heat radiation. This has been an underdeveloped frequency range because of technological challenges. And, astronomy at these frequencies is hindered by the strong absorption by water vapor in the Earth's atmosphere. On the Earth's surface, signals travel only a maximum of a few km before being absorbed. But the situation is rapidly changing. New sources of radiation for measurements have been developed, and dramatic improvements in detector sensitivity have been achieved. And aircraft (SOFIA a 747 aircraft with 2.5m telescope), balloons, and space missions are giving astronomers much better access at terahertz frequencies. Professor Walker's book is thus exceedingly timely, and it is a really excellent overview of both technology and astronomy at terahertz frequencies. The writing is very clear and is pitched to an advanced undergraduate student or scientist or engineer without a lot of background in this area. It covers a lot of material starting with the basic physics, but taking the reader close to the state-of-the-art in terms of analyzing astronomical data or specifying systems for photometry or spectroscopy. It is just an enjoyable book to read, if for no other reason that it is wonderful to see how much progress has been made in the past 20 years or so. The "golden age" of terahertz astronomy may well just be beginning, and reading Terahertz Astronomy is a great way to get a view of where we've come, with pointers to where we will be going.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. the universe ism data and equations By astro good overall book on the big bang start up from the view of all the ISM data from satellites and the background microwave stuff and some equations that try to guess at what went on during the big bang and there after. how a cloud of particles can have gravity attraction is very interesting calculation.
