People have asked me, "How can you teach college science and at the same time be the pastor of a church?"  The reason-they are convinced faith in God and modern science are opposed to one another.  As the author demonstrates through a number of scientific arguments, this is simply not the case. In fact, he contends the existence of an almighty Creator continues to provide the best answers to many of the questions we have in regard to the existence of the universe and life on Earth.  He also encourages his readers to not accept his conclusions before they have first questioned them boldly.        R. Keeth Staton has been the pastor of Springs Presbyterian Church in Dunnellon, FL, for the last twenty-three years.  During much of this time, he has also served as an adjunct science professor at the College of Central Florida.

Well Worthwhile for the Right Audience By Happy Theologian William Thomson Kelvin (1824-1907), better known as Lord Kelvin, once said, "If you think strongly enough, you will be forced by science to the belief in God." This statement well summarizes the thrust of this book.In our modern world, many believe that religion is based in faith which is unproven and therefore requires a leap of wishful thinking. Conversely, it is believed that science is rooted in hard empirical facts. This viewpoint brings many to hold religion in contempt and to elevate science to unwarranted levels of esteem and prestige. Pastor Staton who happens also to be a university science professor does an admirable job of lancing that festering boil. He discusses the various levels of assurance that science can attain and points out that even though evolution is often treated as though it is an established fact, it still has not risen above the level of an unproven theory. He marshals abundant evidence to show that naturalists who attempt to explain the world apart from God are engaged in a herculean task filled with many improbabilities. As he points out, since nobody has ever witnessed how something came into existence out of nothing, nor can anybody offer a rational explanation of how this could have happened, it requires faith on the part of the naturalist to assert that it must have happened at some point in the past. Similarly, the principle of abiogenesis or spontaneous generation is a now discredited scientific theory. Abiogenesis asserts that life can arise out of inanimate matter. Yet, though science rejects this as impossible, naturalists must say that at some point in the past it nevertheless happened. They did not witness it, nor can they offer any explanation of how it could have happened. As the author notes, without these two events the theory of evolution has no ability to gain any traction no matter how much evidence can be marshaled for its support. Therefore, it is faith that requires naturalists to assert what they cannot prove. These are but two of the many examples of the difficulties faced by naturalists that Pastor Staton details in his book.Given the fact that many Christian children go to college and have their faith destroyed in their science classes, this would be a good book to give to young people. This is not light bedtime reading, however. I could understand it, but I have had advanced science training in high school and college. Science, however, is not something I read on a regular basis, and this book was challenging for me but for the most part understandable. It will be over the head of many readers, but it is good for a targeted audience. Science majors should find it fascinating. There were very few typographical errors that I noted (a good job of proofreading), and the only major factual error that I found was the statement that Jonathan Edwards preached during the Second Great Awakening (p. 195). A shorter title would have been nice. The focus of the book was on science and how scientific data reflects on the question of God's existence. It would have been good if the title had reflected that this more narrow focus was the main thrust of the book. My major criticism would be that the book accords far too much respect to naturalism. I guess that is required in academia, one of the circles in which Pastor Staton travels. Some might even say that we should treat our opponents with the utmost respect. Yet, I believe that the apostle Paul is much more blunt and forceful than Pastor Staton. For him, naturalists are fools (Romans 1:22) who because of their ungodly lives suppress the truth in unrighteousness (Romans 1:18). Paul says that they became futile in their speculations and their foolish heart is darkened (Romans 1:22). They exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image of corruptible man (Romans 1:23), for make no mistake that men reject the truth of the Bible in order to be the god of their own little universe. That requires them to make horrible intellectual sacrifices that drags them down the level of an animal, literally. Pastor Ken Hovind like Pastor Staton also dissects evolution quite admirably, but he does so with biting sarcasm and unrelenting exposure of the evil implications of evolution. Of course, he also landed in jail on rather flimsy charges probably because he greatly angered and insulted the scientific establishment. Pastor Staton's book will not win many friends among this group, so he might as well have taken off the kid gloves. Nevertheless, he does a very good job of dissecting naturalism with a kinder blade.

Can you defend your position or do you believe it because your parents did? What does the opposing side believe and why? Confused and don't know what to think? This book provides the scientific evidence for a vast array of different areas of science and challenges you to draw your own conclusions. Definitely worth reading.
