Silviba: A Forester's Log is an entertaining and intriguing story of author Tony Richmond's life as a Canadian forester. The many stories of his adventures, travels and conflicts are colourful and lively. This book is a valuable contribution to preserving the stories of Canadian history and the progress and development of forestry practices over the years. There are many political and economic factors 'behind the scenes' that the author uncovers and explains, including his years of association with Canada's Woodland Cree people. Richmond offers recommendations for improved public forest administration, and a role for First Nations in developing forest-based enterprises. Richmond also makes a case for dropping the pejorative labels generated by non-Indians in favour of using a new word: 'Candian.' Based on his vast experience helping the 'Candians' fight for the resources, Richmond pleads for the eradication of the Indian Affairs Department and proposes instead a replacement with a system of sub-treaties between a province and the 'Candian' entities involved.

Silviba: A Forester's Log, by Tony Richmond

About the Author Anthony Richmond was born under the walls of Dartmoor Prison in Devonshire, UK. He immigrated to Canada in 1949, and received his Canadian naturalisation at New Westminster in 1957. He graduated from UBC in 1958, received his professional forester’s registration (RPF no. 403) in 1963 and thrived in the logging camps of the Nimpkish Valley on Northern Vancouver Island. He married Marilyn Elizabeth Livingston, a teacher at Nimpkish camp. His career took him from industrial forestry to university lecturer, to an instructor at BCIT after achieving a Master’s degree in Forest Management. In the process, he participated in the formation of International Forest Fire Systems Inc. After a stint in Prince George for Industrial Forestry Services Ltd he ended in Saskatchewan as the government’s chief forester. He developed new forest policy as part of his terms of reference. This got him fired. He started up Silviba Services Ltd at Regina in 1984, taught at Lakehead University, and then opened a forestry services office in Prince Albert, SK. He spent the next thirty years working with small sawmill operators, Indian bands with forestry aspirations, a campaign to rid Saskatchewan of the Forestry Crown corporations, timber salvage from forest fires, and research into the early forest history of the Prince Albert district, NWT. His most absorbing task was the reconstruction of forests on certain Indian reserves to obtain estimates of the volume of stolen timber as part of Indian Special Claims timber claims – Forensic Forestry.

By sushanti augustine Such a wonderful story rich in the History and Geography of the early days of BC Forestry. Written by an amazing storyteller, this journey takes you through the early days of Forestry on the BC Coast. It is well worth the read as the Author guides you in a detailed summary of both his journey and the evolvement of Forestry practices encompassing the First Nations History and contributions. The sustainability of these rich resources and the trials and tribulations of forest fires, replantation and reforestation with remarkable detail to the era of the '60's and 70's right up to current. Tony continues his narrative into Saskatchewan where he becomes Chief Forester of the Province. Now this wonderful log book of the birthing pains of BC Forestry and Sustainability of Forest Management throughout Western Canada is forever journaled. Job well done Tony Richmond.

By Amazon Customer An incredible example of passion, persistence, and resilience. This book provides an historical and technical account of forestry practices in Canada and abroad, illustrated by many personal anecdotes and experiences. The author faces more challenges that I could possibly bare, from the culture shock of arriving as a young lad to Canada after WW2, to running through the bush from an angry mother bear, to hanging by swinging rope from a moving helicopter, to negotiating the purchase of underwear in Russia.... this book leverages the mundane and exotic of life's experiences to entertain and educate us. Thank you TR!
