Ask anybody what superpower they wished to possess and odds are the answer just might be "the ability to fly." What is it about soaring through the air held up by the power of one's own body that has captivated humans for so long? David Alexander examines the evolution of flight in the only four animals to have evolved this ability: insects, pterosaurs, birds, and bats. With an accessible writing style grounded in rigorous research, Alexander breaks new ground in a field that has previously been confined to specialists. While birds have received the majority of attention from flight researchers, Alexander pays equal attention to all four groups of flyers-something that no other book on the subject has done before now. In a streamlined and captivating way, David Alexander demonstrates the links between the tiny 2-mm thrip and the enormous albatross with the 12 feet wingspan used to cross oceans. The book delves into the fossil record of flyers enough to satisfy the budding paleontologist, while also pleasing ornithologists and entomologists alike with its treatment of animal behavior, flapping mechanisms, and wing-origin theory. Alexander uses relatable examples to draw in readers even without a natural interest in birds, bees, and bats. He takes something that is so off-limits and unfamiliar to humans-the act of flying-and puts it in the context of experiences that many readers can relate to. Alexander guides readers through the anomalies of the flying world: hovering hummingbirds, unexpected gliders (squirrels, for instance), and the flyers that went extinct (pterosaurs). Alexander also delves into wing-origin theory and explores whether birds entered the skies from the trees down (as gliders) or from the ground up (as runners) and uses the latest fossil evidence to present readers with an answer.

Sharing Economy 101- must read for entrepreneurs, researchers, or futurists By Johannes With rapid technological advances connecting the world in new ways and automating previously un-automatible tasks, the system of labor is beginning to undergo a massive reorganization akin to the Industrial age. The tectonic pressures of this shift create massive opportunity in an entirely new system of entrepreneurship known as the Sharing Economy. Researcher Carl Frey, of Oxford, forecasts that up to 48% of current skill sets in the US will be obsolete within 20 years. Consequently, the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) predicts that many of these jobs will be absorbed within the Sharing Economy. If you are interested in the learning more as an entrepreneur, researcher, or as an interested bystander, I highly recommend reading this book to get the best, most up to date baseline of the sharing economy written to date.

By Lenka Kucerova I generally get quite impatient with scholarly business books, especially of the kind written by academics more than business people. However, the Business of Sharing is written by someone running a business and it shows from the start: the book is full of practical and sharp insight and Alex Stephany has obviously been able to use his network to involve prominent investors and entrepreneurs in the US and elsewhere. I especially enjoyed the chapter called "Founders" where the author interviews the 10 most prominent entrepreneurs in the sharing economy, with each one providing a memorable lesson on entrepreneurship. My other favourite chapter was called "Corporates" in which Stephany explored the coping strategies of large companies to these new competitive threats and compared those multinationals adapting to innovation with those fighting it. I was worried that this book would be propaganda for the sharing economy but in fact Stephany is not afraid to criticise other sharing economy companies and even argues that it could leave large sections of society exposed and reduce the amount of unpaid "truly" neighbourly deeds. In terms of style, the book has great descriptions too (I loved the scene where he is pitching an investor in the offices of top venture capital firms in Silicon Valley!) and was so readable that I finished it in only a few sessions and now feel clear about how the sharing economy will impact my own sector and the world at large.

By Amrita The Business of Sharing - Making it in the New Sharing Economy, is one of the best books written on the topic. An excellent read for founders, entrepreneurs, researchers & anyone participating in the sharing economy/collaborative consumption space. Alex shares some incredible insights, discusses the challenges and opportunities along with some really funny stories, which makes it a fun read.Being a founder in the sharing economy space myself (Date My Wardrobe), one of my favorite chapters was "Founders". It was a learning experience reading about other founders, how and why they stated their businesses, overcame the initial challenges (insurance, 2-sided marketplace etc). One of my favorite stories (which I had not heard of earlier) was that of JustPark and BlaBlaCar. "Investors" is another chapter I enjoyed reading where Alex talks about about the firms investing in the sharing economy startups and what the they look for. On a side/fun note, Alex shares his "encounter" with Sequoia Capital and I am convinced, fund raising stories can actually be funny - after the fact.

Not only do we need more female leaders at the top, but we need more women at all levels of business, government, and nonprofits to step up—there's no time to waste. The problem, says Helene Lerner, isn't so much that women lack confidence but that they misunderstand what confidence really is. True confidence isn't fearlessness; it's having the courage to jump in even when your knees are shaking. Any woman who waits until she feels 100 percent confident before offering a big idea or asking for a raise or promotion will never get anywhere. Drawing on her own and other female leaders' experiences, as well as on her survey of over 500 working women, Lerner lays out practical strategies for beating this confidence myth and overcoming obstacles like gender bias. The book features dozens of Confidence Sparks, simple but powerful exercises and techniques that can catapult anyone's career to the next level.

The Confidence Myth: Why Women Undervalue Their Skills, and How to Get Over It, by Helene Lerner

Review “Even today, women are often overly self-depreciating and under confident, especially when it comes to leadership roles. This book by Lerner (founder, womenworking.com; In Her Power) takes aim at that assertion by directly refuting six "confidence myths" that are often voiced by women. These include not feeling capable of tackling a job or project, the idea that one is either a "natural-born" leader or not, that criticism can't be handled objectively, that you have to do everything yourself, that it is too difficult to attract a sponsor or mentor, and not being able to trust your own intuition. While written from Lerner's own perspective as an author and workplace consultant, the book is also based on survey responses from 520 working women. The survey instrument and results are included in an appendix. Sprinkled throughout are a series of useful tips called "Confidence Sparks"—an additional appendix contains 30 more of these sparks, addressing areas not covered in the work's six main chapters. VERDICT A quick, practical, and appealing read about confidence boosting, with data to back it up.”—Susan Hurst, Miami Univ. Libs., Oxford, OH, Library Journal “The Confidence Myth is the handbook for any woman looking to succeed in her career. Helene Lerner cuts through the noise and gets to the heart of what keeps women from succeeding in business—and how to get past it!”—Barbara Corcoran, real estate mogul and star of ABC's Shark Tank“Helene Lerner tackles head-on the myths and truths about confidence—a hot topic linked to women's success. Her straightforward, authentic approach incorporates practical tips and exercises to help build your confidence muscle. This book is a treasure trove of advice to help advance your career.”—Sharon Orlopp, Global Chief Diversity Officer and Senior Vice President of Corporate People, Wal-Mart“The Confidence Myth offers practical insights, tips, and tools that can help you move through your fears and spark your confidence. It's an indispensable read for women who want to become empowered and successful while staying true to their values.”—Denise Morrison, President and CEO, Campbell Soup Company“This is a powerful and heartfelt book about what it actually means to have true confidence. Helene inspires women leaders to tackle the confidence myth and provides actionable advice for women to propel their careers to the next level.” —Sylvia Ann Hewlett, Founding President and CEO, Center for Talent Innovation “The Confidence Myth is a must-read for every professional woman; it provides pragmatic advice for present and future leaders. Helene Lerner' insights are extremely valuable for any woman who wants to develop into a world-class leader.” —Ana Dutra, President and CEO, Executives' Club of Chicago“Every woman needs to read this book. It confirms you are not alone in your fears and worries while offering solid strategies to get beyond them. I started dog-earing pages I wanted to return to until I realized it would be easier just to dog-ear the ones I didn't.”—Janet Kelly, Senior Vice President Legal, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, Conoco Phillips“We all struggle with knowing how to express our own value and move through our fears--This book walks women through these common struggles and helps them emerge as stronger, more confident role models. Helene Lerner's combination of both honesty and insight makes this a valuable tool for women of all ages.” —Mika Brzezinski, cohost of MSNBC's Morning Joe

Key messages and tips for women building careers By Samantha Saperstein This book is filled with very important and practical advice for women at all stages of their careers. Helene does a great job of taking critical work place behaviors and illustrating them with examples from her own career and those of other successful professional women. Understanding that confidence is not the absence of fear, but the willingness to take action despite fear, is something that will hopefully take pressure off of the many women striving for perfection. In sharing Helene's book and messages with hundreds of women in my company, I heard overwhelmingly positive feedback from women who were very encouraged by her helpful tips, research, and recommendations. I think this book is important to read and internalize. It powerfully distills messages around taking risks, building relationships, promoting yourself, and saying no to the "time bandits" that sap you of energy and leave you no time for yourself.

Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) was one of the most admired astronomers who ever lived and a key figure in the scientific revolution. A defender of Copernicus´s sun-centred universe, he famously discovered that planets move in ellipses, and defined the three laws of planetary motion. Perhaps less well known is that in 1615, when Kepler was at the height of his career, his widowed mother Katharina was accused of witchcraft. The proceedings led to a criminal trialthat lasted six years, with Kepler conducting his mother's defence. In The Astronomer and the Witch, Ulinka Rublack pieces together the tale of this extraordinary episode in Kepler's life, one which takes us to the heart of his changing world. First and foremost an intense family drama, the story brings to life the world of a small Lutheran community in the centre of Europe at a time of deep religious and political turmoil - a century after the Reformation, and on the threshold of the Thirty Years' War. Kepler's defence of his mother also offers us a fascinating glimpse into the great astronomer's world view, on the cusp between Reformation and scientific revolution. While advancing rational explanations for the phenomena which his mother's accusers attributed to witchcraft, Kepler nevertheless did not call into question the existence of magic and witches. On the contrary, he clearly believed in them. And, as the story unfolds, it appears that there were moments when even Katharina'schildren struggled to understand what their mother had done...

The Astronomer and the Witch: Johannes Kepler's Fight for his Mother, by Ulinka Rublack

Review "...[A]n enthralling, many-sided book... [A]t once a vivid introduction to a fascinating social and cultural world; a profound analysis of a witch trial...and a deep study of one of the greatest scientists who ever lived..." --Professor Anthony Grafton, Princeton University

"Gripping and inspiring, this tale of the six-year battle to clear Katharina Kepler of the charge of witchcraft yields striking new insights into the personalities and families involved, their communities and their culture... The past, with its hopes and fears, comes wonderfully to life in this scholarly masterwork." --Professor Nicholas Jardine, University of Cambridge

"This book takes you right to the heart of life in the seventeenth century, with all its sense of intellectual possibility, its dreams and its fears. Rublack tells a shocking story. How was it possible for the mother of the famous scientist Kepler to be accused of witchcraft, and why did she come to trial? In gripping prose, Rublack shows how the case destroyed those involved in it. She makes us understand how witchcraft could be credible and why people feared it so much. She makes us understand the psychological wellsprings of Kepler's work. And she presents a whole new account of scientific thinking and its relationship to natural knowledge at the dawn of a new era. The most compelling book I have read for a long time." --Professor Lyndal Roper, University of Oxford

"Gives readers a nuanced look at a world in which most people, including Kepler, believed that witches existed." -- Publisher's Weekly

About the Author Ulinka Rublack is Professor of Early Modern European History at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St John's College. One of the most original historians of her generation, she has published widely on early modern European history, including Reformation Europe (2005), Dressing Up: Cultural Identity in Renaissance Europe (2010), which won the Roland Bainton Prize, and (as editor) A Concise Companion to History (2011).

I believe the author has firmly accomplished her stated objective (p. 306) of presenting history by “…restoring nuance to our account of past lives and respect for different voices from a wide social spectrum…”The complex characters in this book could hardly have been invented; instead they have been “rediscovered” from the author’s intense study of and extensive knowledge of local conditions and resources in the contentious times leading to the Thirty Years War in the central European states. Her understanding of Dr. Kepler, his colleagues, his antagonists and supporters, and particularly his mother, brothers and sister and other family is insightful and recognizes the push and pull of the trauma and dissension and conflict each of us faces in everyday life, as well as its joys and benefits. And all this understanding is in the context of a compelling and historically captivating story, well presented with a sense of the reader being in the midst of the action.

In 1615, his 73 year old mother, Katharina Kepler was accused of bewitching several people in town, and over the next six years a continuing trial and imprisonment was challenged by her son. Later, after a year of imprisonment, she was threatened with torture to confess her crimes. Only Johannes and his siblings kept up a steady opposition to the governor's accusations and attempts to have his mother convicted of the crime. This is an interesting account of witch trials in Protestant Germany at the start of the 17th century. There is an examination of the evidence, how it was interpreted, and how it was refuted by one of the better mathematical minds living in Europe at that time. Some of the 24 witnesses were deemed to be irrelevant, but enough were thought competent for the charges to be prosecuted. Kepler spent much of his time trying to refute the witnesses and write up a point by point rebuttal to the accusations, and then reply to the attack of his rebuttal by the prosecution. Finally, it was decided to scare her into confession, not by torture, but by pretending to have sentenced her to torture, and showing her the devices to be used to force her to confess, hoping the mere sight of the devices and descriptions of enhanced interrogation by the executioner will frighten her into revealing her crime.Refusing to be intimidated, she was eventually released after 14 months locked to a chain in a cell, and she died six months later. This is an interesting study of how a witch trial was conducted, the types of evidence and methods of defense used, and how a counter-suit of defamation was used to protect Katharina Kepler. Afterwards, she was hailed as a local heroine in Eltingen, and even Nazi Germany put up a statue in her honor. While promoted as an example of work and industriousness, her steadfast denial of the charge of witchcraft had helped end the persecution of women as witches in Germany as a whole.A recommended book for libraries of astronomy, German history, witchcraft trials and women's studies. Also for individuals interested in any or all of these subjects.

It would be nice if we could view this book as purely of historical interest, but unfortunately Christianity is still promoting low quality thought and analysis in many people today, and thus this book is highly relevant to the challenges we face trying to survive (and even thrive) in the modern world.

Understanding analogies and the ability to reason analogically (reasoning used to identify, evaluate, and solve an analogy) are important problem-solving skills. Problem-solving is an essential part of mathematical development. Analogies teach students to break problems down into their component parts, making it easier to recognize familiar formats that enable students to produce solutions. For grades 8-9, the Math Analogies in this book provide students with the opportunity to develop and sharpen their reasoning skills and powers of abstraction against the backdrop of a rich tapestry of mathematical content. The analogies in this book are designed around the grade-appropriate standards identified by the National Council of Teaching Mathematics.

Thelen I've gained a lot from Dr. Zimmerman's teachings over the years - conferences, CD's, weekly e-mails, and books. This book in particular is a favorite of mine because it helped me become a more complete person, and it goes beyond theory to a) practical advice to implement concepts and b) motivational stories to encourage you in your journey. If I can sum up this book I would call it a good roadmap for designing a happy, productive life.

The author, true to his long list of credentials, was able to give me a whole new outlook and a whole new mindset! He has convinced me that success and fulfillment can be mine--if only I am willing to put forth the effort! I especially liked stories about the author's own life--and examples he uses (of persons both famous and ordinary) to underscore the effectiveness of pointers presented. It's an easy read, and I will be buying extra copies for my children and grandchildren.

I was not wrong! I ordered the work book at the same time. I have decided to read the book through once and then to read it again and apply the work book. I am just about to finish the book and I can't stop talking about it.I am thankful that Dr. Zimmerman makes the applications so easy to understand and the fact that (I) am the one that needs to take the first step in making the changes in my life. It is not easy being a forerunner and taking the thumps along the way, but I am so thankful that Dr. Zimmerman has done it and is willing to share the things that he had to endure so that we can pull from his experience and apply them to our lives in work and at home.A must read!!

"[...]to sell twenty or even twelve cups full, that will get us through next week beautifully." Then she filled the little cup and weighed its contents. They were just over her idea. And Linde's spirits rose again as she helped her sister to cleanse the canister from every speck of dust or mould and then to fill it with the perfumed leaves. All that day the cottage seemed pervaded by the fragrance. Accidentally a few of the leaves and some grains of the powder fell among Linde's curly hair, and when she brushed it out at night she was amused at its scent. It was not to be wondered at perhaps, that as her head lay on the pillow she should have dreamt of the jar and its contents and the old mystery associated with them.[...]".

Fairies Afield By Amazon Customer Fairies Afield is a cutesy book filled with kind and generous children/teenagers doing wonderfully charming and sweet things, for which they receive magical rewards from fairies. It's saccharine and childish, and I honestly kinda loved it. Seriously, this book stopped just short of being too much, and aside from a few paragraphs where descriptions dragged on a bit too long, the stories were all a wonderful read. There are a few warnings to give, however. Because of the age of this book (1911--over a hundred years old!), there are a few things that today's audience might find objectionable. First is the gender roles, especially the women. It's not too bad, but there are a few points where the various female characters talk down about themselves, and...I don't know, it just felt very antiquated. Probably not a big deal. The second warning is even less of a deal, and that is that several words that are now used as offensive slurs against certain people are used in the book. In the text they have their old meanings of "strange," "happy," and "sticks," but I like to warn people when they're going to run into those words, because invariably someone will be offended. Try not to let it be you.The four stories are:"Ask the Robin": Two orphaned sisters need to survive on their own, but may need the fairies' help to do soA Magic Table: Three impoverished cousins must earn the right to inherit their uncle's fortuneThe Weather Maiden: A shy young girl has a terrible time adjusting to living with her aunt and uncle--at least until she gets some supernatural assistanceThe Enchanted Trunks: When a girl agrees to travel with her cousin, her main worry is being able to pack everything efficiently

Home is the resort Of love, of joy, of peace and plenty, where, Supporting and supported, polish'd friends And dear relations mingle into bliss. Thomson On the pleasant banks of the Garonne, in the province of Gascony, stood, in the year 1584, the chateau of Monsieur St. Aubert. From its windows were seen the pastoral landscapes of Guienne and Gascony stretching along the river, gay with luxuriant woods and vine, and plantations of olives. To the south, the view was bounded by the majestic Pyrenees, whose summits, veiled in clouds, or exhibiting awful forms, seen, and lost again, as the partial vapours rolled along, were sometimes barren, and gleamed through the blue tinge of air, and sometimes frowned with forests of gloomy pine, that swept downward to their base. These tremendous precipices were contrasted by the soft green of the pastures and woods that hung upon their skirts; among whose flocks, and herds, and simple cottages, the eye, after having scaled the cliffs above, delighted to repose. To the north, and to the east, the plains of Guienne and Languedoc were lost in the mist of distance; on the west, Gascony was bounded by the waters of Biscay.[...]

The Mysteries of Udolpho, by Ann Radcliffe

About the Author Ann Radcliffe (9 July 1764 – 7 February 1823) was an English author and a pioneer of the Gothic novel. Her style is romantic in its vivid descriptions of landscapes and long travel scenes, yet the Gothic element is obvious through her use of the supernatural. It was her technique of explained Gothicism, the final revelation of inexplicable phenomena, that helped the Gothic novel achieve respectability in the 1790s.

Many sentences are left hanging. When I downloaded a Quality Classics edition for 99 cents I discovered that all poetry is left out of this free book. The poetry is not just fluff. It is crucial to the book so do not waste your time with this free edition.

25 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Unexpected Gothic Pleasures By K. Jacobi I have been intrigued by this novel for years, but I only knew Udolpho by reputation until I finally read the novel recently. Many studies of Gothic fiction cite Radcliffe's novel as a classic Gothic text, one of the early examples that set the standard for the genre as we now think of it. Scholars of the Female Gothic subgenre in particular point to Udolpho as an early example, mostly due to Emily St. Aubert's perfect turn as the helpless female heroine who became a stock character in early Gothic fiction. Then, of course, I read Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey in a college seminar and imagined Udolpho to be a laugh-worthy, melodramatic, fake horror fest. I can't say there aren't any laughable moments (Emily's poems), or that there isn't melodrama (lots of fainting; the parting scene between Emily and Valancourt at the end of Volume I), or even that there isn't some fake horror (all of the "mysteries" are explained by the novel's close); however, Radcliffe's novel defied my expectations in more ways than it reaffirmed them. The Oxford World's Classics edition with the introduction by Terry Castle is the only edition I've read, but I recommend it particularly because of the introduction, which I found very interesting and insightful after finishing the novel. One point that Castle makes is that despite the novel's Gothic label, Udolpho is more like "a disconcerting textual hybrid." The multi-generic nature of the novel is one of the features that most surprised me; it takes quite a while for Emily to become imprisoned in Udolpho and what precedes her time there is almost anti-Gothic. Emily has perfect parents and the perfect upbringing, though she begins to suffer relatively early on when her mother dies. After this point, she and her father embark on a long trip across France, described at length by Radcliffe in what Castle terms "a bizarre quasi-travelogue." Here we get super-detailed descriptions of natural scenery and of the innate goodness of the St. Aubert clan. Yes, some of the nature described could be filed under "sublime," and such descriptions are standard in many Gothic texts. They are also standard in many Romantic texts, and while the overlap between those two genres/movements is significant, for some reason the Gothic has been viewed as the dark, popular (ew!) sibling of the (maybe) sunnier (self-satisfied?), high-art-producing Romanticism. While the St. Auberts' innocence and goodness make them prime targets for our evil Italian villains (Montoni, primarily), they do spend a lot of their time happily exploring nature, and even after several tragedies befall her and dampen her spirits (and make her faint a lot), Emily is relatively cheerful at times. In other words, the mood is not always Gothic in the novel; indeed, it's probably Gothic less often than it is something else. And then besides the travel narrative, there are also those poems that Emily composes on a whim, about sea nymphs and weary travelers. Radcliffe also incorporates excerpts from poetry into her prose, along with lines from Shakespeare plays, and she begins each chapter with epigraphs from other works. I think that in many ways, the mixing of genres in the novel ultimately makes it a more interesting and more complex text.Udolpho is a very long novel (almost 700 pages), but, as an insanely popular best-seller in the late 18th century, Radcliffe's work was apparently quite a page-turner. Even Austen's Henry Tilney admits that after hijacking his younger sister's copy of the novel, he "could not lay down again; I remember finishing it in two days--my hair standing on end the whole time." For modern readers, there's not going to be much in Udolpho that is particularly scary, but Radcliffe does create suspense by introducing mysterious plot elements and not resolving those elements for, literally, hundreds of pages. But because all of those elements are, indeed, resolved, and any potentially supernatural phenomena are explained away, the novel isn't really about scaring the reader at all. Instead, we are invited to witness, as many other reviewers have noted, the coming-of-age of the heroine, as she struggles to overcome her passion and superstition to live a life governed by reason and logic. At the same time, however, I agree with Castle that Radcliffe aims "to reawaken in her readers a sense of the numinous - of invisible forces at work in the world." These forces are not exactly supernatural, though; instead, "Radcliffe represents the human mind itself as a kind of supernatural entity." In this sense, Udolpho is truly a Gothic classic as a result of its interest not in mysterious external forces, but in the way in which the human mind registers such forces, and how it attempts to understand and work through them. The Gothic's preoccupation with human psychology is more often-commented on in response to American Gothic works like Poe's short stories or Female Gothic classics like Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper," but I see this as a primary interest of Radcliffe's in Udolpho, as well.I have given the novel five stars, which reflects my personal enjoyment of the work and my interest in the themes and issues it raises for a reader. It will probably be most well-loved by those interested in Gothic fiction, literature by women, and those who are enamored by lengthy, patient, meticulously-detailed narratives. As a fan of all of those things, I recommend the novel and its introduction very highly.

Altogether it was a delightful letter, and Katy read it, as it were, in leaps, her eyes catching at the salient points, and leaving the details to be dwelt upon when she should be alone. This done, she thrust the letter into her pocket, and proceeded to examine the others. The first was in Cousin Helen's clear, beautiful handwriting:— DEAR KATY,—If any one had told us ten years ago that in this particular year of grace you would be getting ready to be married, and I preparing to come to your wedding, I think we should have listened with some incredulity, as to an agreeable fairy tale which could not possibly come true. We didn't look much like it, did we,—you in your big chair and I on my sofa? Yet here we are! When your letter first reached me it seemed a sort of impossible thing that I should accept your [...]".

Mouse Under Glass : Secrets of Disney Animation and Theme Parks, by David Koenig

From School Library Journal YA. An evaluation of the quality and financial successes of Disney's ventures. Koenig presents a chronological overview of 30 films from "Snow White" through "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"; he relates each one to its original tale, gives the Disney version, and tells what and why cuts were made. The promised secrets consist of such things as "Plot Holes," "Bloopers," "Hidden Images," and "Strange Reactions." Although there is no Disney art here, there are a few black-and-white illustrations by Joel Chandler Harris as well as Tenniel's famous Alice sketches and one of Ernest Shepard's Mary Poppins. Anecdotes about the growth of the Disney industry and the development of the theme-park rides are included. One of the most enticing sidebars offers over 50 names that were originally considered for the seven dwarfs.?Frances Reiher, Fairfax County Public Library, VACopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Disney books tend toward shameless promotion or intractable hostility, so a critical but fun examination of the mouse empire is welcome. Critical here refers to examining plot inconsistencies, bloopers, and background stories in Disney movies from Snow White to The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The original stories on which the scripts were based, significant Disney-version departures, and theme-park attractions based on each movie all get attention, but of surpassing value are "strange reactions" to the movies. For example, the NAACP picketed Song of the South, and that shocked Uncle Walt; now, which reaction was strange is an open question. Another surprise: contemporary reaction to Sleeping Beauty and the changes at Disney in its wake; now generally considered a Disney classic, the film was an ungodly long time a-making, got some hostile reviews, and barely broke even in first release. With a background narrative supplying historical context and such boxed features as a Disney Tragedy Trivia Quiz and the Orphan-O-Meter for passing amusement, consider this a must for Disneyphiles. Mike Tribby

Review David Koenig's Secrets Of Disney Animation And Theme Parks is an unauthorized examination of Disney animated classics and the origins of characters, songs and theme park attractions provides a light and intriguing coverage of the evolution of Disney themes - and a review of some proposed themes which didn't quite make it. Any studying Disney animation and history will find this a fun and informative expose of one of America's most influential corporations on "popular culture". -- Midwest Book Review

A good book overall, but I was a bit disappointed By A Customer While I was REALLY excited about this book, especially after reading MouseTales-a behind the Ears look at Disneyland , I am only so-so on it now. Don't get me wrong; on a scale of 1-10 it would still be a 7.5 and is a good read, but I was a bit disappointed. The book is well laid out and set-up to follow a familiar pattern. First comes the ACTUAL story that the Disney movies were based on. This is really interesting, especially to see how far some of the "Classics" have actually gone away from the real story line. Then comes a couple of pages write-up on the Disney story including some background information into how the story evolved, who was involved, and how it got from here to there-all good stuff. Then he talks about Bloopers, Hiddens, and Theme Park Attractions. And he does this for almost all 34 animated features plus Song of the South, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Mary Poppins and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. So the book really is quite comprehensive. I loved the Actual Story and the Disney Story parts of the book, but the information on Bloopers, Hiddens and Theme Park Attractions was not particularly extensive and in a few parts-especially on the harder to find films like Sleeping Beauty and Song of the South outright wrong. (I have both.) While my opinion might be somewhat tainted by my own knowledge (I am one of THOSE fans and can from memory list a good number more than is in the books), this brush treatment of these subjects is enough to cast aspersions over the other parts of the book and make you wonder how much of it may or may not be accurate

Learning some of the things that Disney animators get away with in terms of hidden messages and pictures forced me to become aware of what goes on "behind the scenes." Being a true Disney fan and an aspiring writer, I loved reading about the actual stories and the final Disney products. While I was not very interested in the ideas for the theme parks, I found the book to be very informative, increasing my excitement to read on. Using the hidden images sections, I actually studied Aladdin and The Lion King to see how acurate the "accusations" were. I was truly impressed and would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys "studying" the origins of and concepts behind the Disney films

13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Unofficial, unabashed, but not unfair By Dan Amrich You could say that David Koenig's tone is unvarnished and unsympathetic, or you could say it's cranky and cynical. Either way, Mouse Under Glass proves undeniably refreshing, full of compelling information and insights--provided in part by Disney animators, writers, composers, and Imagineers. It's an instant trivia treasure trove from a man who has watched Disney movies far, far too many times.Whereas most Disney authors salivate all over themselves attempting to convey the pure genius of Walt's legacy, Koenig discusses each film's flaws, often-convoluted origins, behind-the-scenes battles, and just plain bad habits with a much more dry sensibility. Yes, Disney makes magic, but they also make movies, and the book analyzes each film on its cinematic and storytelling merits. Each story is researched to compare its original form to the "Disneyfied" version, often with enlightening and surprising results; tales and insights from the folks who helped make the features and related theme-park rides merge with Koenig's own tight prose for an air of authority. Amusing and educational sidebars (such as a Disney Tragedy Trivia Quiz) and a few illustrations help break up what could have been a very long list of factoids.Koenig's platform is that "Disney has the recipe for success," but the use of cooking quotes and analogies before each chapter comes off as an awkward, out-of-context device. Also, the book is marred by a few typos--nearly hypocritical considering the attention paid to Disney's own minor mistakes. And while Koenig clearly respects the work he's discussing, his tone is one of tough love--from urging to prodding to nearly provoking and harassing the studio to do things better. He rather enjoys sticking it to the House of Mouse when the chips (and presumably dales) are down, which will likely alienate some hardcore, soft-hearted Disneyphiles. But this book is not written for those who live in a fantasy world, only those who appreciate a good one when they see it. With excellent, relevant research and precise, entertaining writing, Mouse Under Glass is as fresh and fair an analysis of Disney magic as you're likely to find.

It can be overwhelming to know where to start, and how to approach certain donors for funds, no matter the cause.Even if you are a seasoned writer who understands the gist of how to get the job done, it’s easy to go “blank” when you sit down and look at the page. This book removes all those hurdles, by providing templates for a variety of fundraising scenarios. Even though you will of course have to spend time customizing the letters to your situation, it provides the starting ground you need. It’s definitely a great option for anyone who doesn’t consider themselves a writer, but doesn’t want their lack of skill to become a hurdle for their fundraising efforts. If you’d rather not use one of the templates provided in the book, there’s enough guidance in the beginning chapters to help you get the job done on your own. You can’t beat the wealth of knowledge presented here for the price. It will most definitely pay for itself in the long run.

By kiliki I've read a little more than 1/2 of the book so far and have picked up a TON of great information on how to write not only fundraising letters, but also how to write good marketing copy. They psychology be between sales copy and writing fundraising letters are very similar and this book is very helpful in giving in depth tips on how to do it.I also love the structure and the way the author explains the letter writing flow. My wife works for a non-profit and I work in marketing. We both get so much value from this book. I'm recommending all my marketing staff read it so they can be better email marketers.

Winder-Adams As someone who has been involved in fundraising in a variety of non-profit organizations on a volunteer basis, this book is a lifesaver. All the days spent agonizing over how to create the right tone, emotional content, and what information is relevant to include in the letter are finally now over.I really like the basic guidelines which provide some very relevant tips and information, some I knew and some which are new to me. The samples, which are clearly identified and developed for specific types of fundraising requests help to give you a real world look at what that specific type of letter should look like. With this handy e-book and guide, I am a lot more confident going into another year and another cycle of fundraising campaigns. I plan to keep this book on my Kindle as well as my phone so I have the information needed right at my fingertips. I would highly recommend this to have as a resource for any organization involved in general fundraising activities.
