In the nineteenth century, the colonial territories of California and Hawai'i underwent important cultural, economic, and ecological transformations influenced by an unlikely factor: cows. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An interesting environmental history comparing Hawai'i and California up to about 1850. By lyndonbrecht This is an intriguing book. It's somewhat academic, but well-written. It would be improved with a map or two and more illustrations. The core of the book is a comparison between California and Hawai'i, with the impact of cattle on native peoples and the environment. Both experienced the arrival of European systems and domesticated animals at about the same time: George Vancouver (British captain and explorer) took a few cattle to Hawai'i in 1789, and the missions arrived in what is now California in the later 1700s. In both cased native peoples were dispossessed and the local ecosystems altered. There are some differences, of couse: Hawai'an natives survive and retain some influence, but many California tribal peoples were wiped out in a way some historians see as genocide.The players get complex. In California, I was at first Spanish, then Mexican, and the Mexicans disbanded the missions and took over tribal and mission resources, to be themselves dispossessed by the arrival of Americans following the Mexican War. Spanish, Mexican, American, British and Russian interests affected the place (covered in the book is ranch California, it might be called, from San Diego to San Francisco, to about 1850). Hawai'i had most of the same players with the addition of a vigorous native monarchy; British, American, Russian and a few others. They were tied together in trade, with tallow, hides and beef the main items; Hawai'i was a main port for the trade in sea otter furs, and a base for whaling. Cattle enter into it as provisions for whalers, lots and lots of whaling ships. Among the other elements were the South American wars of independence--an Argentine privateer shows up in California, and open trade linked California with Peru (tallow for candles used in mines among other things).Cattle populations expanded hugely in both places, altering grazing and other aspects of the landscape; the missions sought to control and Christianize native Californians (as American missionaries sought to convert Hawai'ians, although this is mentioned mostly in passing). Cattle were essentially wild, the era of ranches coming later, particularly after American control imposed rigorous private property rights. The Hawai'ian cattle were at first under a kapu (spellings vary--tapu, taboo) that did not allow Hawaia'ian commoners to use them. Once the population of cattle grew, the trade in tallow and hides ensued, based on essentially hunting and killing wild animals, and was important as an export, the sandlewood trade having faded.The distinctive Hawai'ian cowboys, paniolos (Hawai'ian version of Spanish) is one cultural artifact. Vaqueros were brought in from California to train locals in handling cattle, in about 1832. The cattle era was important until sugar became dominant, although ranching long remained important. A key development was the Great Mahele in 1848, when land was divided and private holding of land became possible (before that, the king technically owned all the land, making title to property insecure). One ranch started by a New Englander who deserted ship in 1815, married into a Hawai'ian family and had a 68,000 acre ranch by 1868--the Palmer Ranch lasted until 1992 and remains some sort of land trust, growing wind power in this century. Native Californians had little chance to develop ranches, but the Spanish/ Mexicans did for a time.In both cases aboriginal people were dispossessed, and the landscape altered vastly by new peoples, new animals and plants. Also in both cases the importance of ranching lasted only a few decades as a dominant economic activity, but have given rise to considerable nostalgia and more recently reenacting of a kind. Hawai'ian slack guitar is at least partly rooted in the paniolo culture, and is growing slowly in popularity. Fischer notes that the cowboy history of California has in effect been bleached out, that original cowboys were Spanish/ Mexican, Indian, African American and Hawai'ian paniolos were Hawai'ian, Japanese, Filipino and more, also little considered in popular versions of the West.The book ends rather abruptly for my taste, but it's a solidly researched and readable book. It's one of a number of recent environmental histories that link people, environment and domestic (and wild) animals all as actors together in a larger history--although hardly equal in impact.
