About the Author Peter Neuwirth has over thirty years of actuarial experience. He is currently a senior consultant with Towers Watson and is one of its subject matter experts. He is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and an enrolled actuary. In his personal life, Peter has used Present Value to decide if he should take a time-share company up on its offer of a cheap vacation rental in Kauai, what kind of running shoes to buy, and whether to get married, among other quandaries.

Approach your life with a new paradigm, in which uncertainty is not an enemy, but a medium for self-expression By James Kenney Being an actuary is a weird profession. We are trained to see the future as a jigsaw puzzle of little pieces, the majority of which will explode in our face as soon as we touch them. Not only that, we're guaranteed that one day, despite all our caution, prudence and the powerful tools of our training in Present Value analysis, SOMETHING will explode and that will be that. They call economics "the dismal science", but actuarial science is potentially even worse.That said, the truly miraculous thing about being a human is that we can foresee the future, "through a glass darkly," perhaps, but still we CAN foresee it. The sad part is that we tend to use our unique gift to generate anxiety, worry and self-doubt. Pete Neuwirth's book shows it doesn't have to be this way, and demonstrates step by step, in an eminently readable fashion, how to turn this mental trick of ours into an advantage, instead of a source of dread. He will teach you how to banish dread through a process of envisioning multiple futures, assigning a value (perhaps a monetary value, as actuaries normally do, but actually, any sort of value, however personal or even transpersonal) to each, and blending them all together to make the best decision you can, in the teeth of the uncertainty that faces us all.His examples, such as whether to buy a new refrigerator, can equally well be used (perhaps better used) to decide much more transcendent dilemmas, such as whether to become a painter, pursue a spiritual path with vigor, risk rejection by being more vulnerable with your partner, or stand up and be counted when you strongly disagree with a decision a group is about to make.Yes, this book can help you learn to make better decisions, not just subjectively better, but demonstrably better. In a deeper sense, though, the book opens the door to a new way of seeing yourself in relationship to others, and even to time itself.Easy to read, not dependent on mathematics, with amusing and vivid examples, this book holds out the possibility of approaching your life with a new paradigm, in which uncertainty is not an enemy, but a medium for self-expression, like the paint Van Gogh used to create his masterpieces.Make your life into the masterpiece you've always wanted. Better Decision Making is in your Future By Lara Heller What’s Your Future Worth articulates a process of decision-making that is thoughtful, deliberate and accesible. Neuwirth distills a few decades of experience as an actuary, where he honed his skills and developed his vision on how to better make decisions based on their near- and long-term impact. The book lays out a clear five-step process for considering a wide range of decisions – small to large, minor to life-changing – in a way that is quite approachable (and doesn’t require any math!).However, for me the value of the book went well beyond the particular process. Whether Neuwirth consciously intended it or not, the book helped me really think about what’s important to me and how I make decisions. It wasn’t all pleasant at first! I came to see that, in the rush to make a decision, I can too quickly narrow my options. But I also saw how my drive to “get through the process” can skew the results, and not usually favorably. By slowing down, opening to a broader and longer-term perspective and letting some types of decisions percolate, I’ll be happier over the long-term. In practicing this a bit as I read the book, I gained some clarity in some real-life decisions I’ve been working with. I can't recommend this book more highly!

Sacks "What's Your Future Worth?" is innovative and insightful. It provides a way of thinking about decisions, and a way of articulating those thoughts, that lead to better decisions. It helps move into many important decisions from the fuzzy unconscious realm to the clearer conscious realm.
