These few words of review cannot possibly do justice to Tom Walker’s talent as naturalist, writer, and, most of all, gifted wildlife photographer. Each photo contained in Alaska Wildlife Through the Seasons seems to have been taken at exactly the right time and in exactly the right location to display the wonder of Alaska’s wildlife in each season of the year. The textual descriptions introducing each section of the book, as well as the capsule summaries accompanying every photograph, benefit from the author’s in-depth knowledge of Alaska, its majestic landscape, and its myriad of beings. The written and visual descriptions of the seasonal comings and goings of Alaska’s creatures are, simply put, fascinating. A wide variety of birds arrive in spring (I learned that Alaska is home to 501 species of birds, most of them migratory) to join young bear cubs, dall sheep lambs, and moose and caribou calves. The vibrant pictures of each of these are stunning. My favorite shows two mountain goat kids perched atop a granite boulder, nuzzling in the safety of their steep terrain. In summer, Alaska’s land and its sea are teeming with life. Pictures include a humpback whale leaping out of the sea in Alaska’s Inside Passage, a grizzly bear just at the point of snaring a leaping red salmon, and a majestic bull caribou with its summer antlers covered in velvet. Favorites in this section are a tiny roufus hummingbird which has traveled 3900 miles from Mexico to enjoy Alaska’s brief summer, and a band of dall sheep grazing in an alpine meadow. When the two-to-three month Alaska summer comes to an end, the bull caribou (shown vividly in the opening picture of the autumn chapter) now has fully-developed antlers and a rich, colorful coat. It’s about to begin its migration to warmer climes, along with other mammals, land and sea, fish and many birds. This section’s photos include dall sheep butting their heads together in a battle for dominance, three bull caribou swimming in a river with a backdrop of Alaskan mountains, a trumpeter swan flexing its wings, and a sandhill crane feeding to gain weight prior to heading south. Pictures of two bull caribou locked in battle, a gigantic grizzly bear resting after failing in a quest for food, and a female wolf charging through shallow water, were among my favorites. The final chapter brings the book and the Alaskan year to a close. Sometimes winters come gradually, sometimes with a roaring suddenness. Walker’s words and pictures describe how species survive the brutal winters (some escape by moving southward, others hibernate, still others move across the frozen Alaskan terrtain scavenging for food). Photos included in this section include shots of arctic foxes, bald eagles, a great horned owl, polar bears, bull moose, and musk oxen. My absolute favorite photo is that of a large caribou, antlers still intact, moving across the winter snow. Another amazing photograph shows the beauty of the northern lights painted across the otherwise dark Alaskan landscape. While I’ve never been to Alaska, this book has given me a vivid impression of the beauty and wonder of the state’s wildlife and landscape. I highly recommend Alaska Wildlife Through the Seasons to anyone planning to travel to Alaska, or to anyone simply wishing to see and learn more about Alaska and its magnificent array of wildlife.

The voice in the text is as beautiful and awe-inspiring as the photos. This is a photo book that provides a wide variety of wildlife in unique settings to suite the reader's every mood. These are not simply "cute" wildlife photos; they capture the peace and beauty of the wilderness that provides habitat for these amazing creatures. I am pleased with the high quality of this book and the very reasonable price. My copy is already well-used by my elementary students. I will order another copy to enjoy at home and more copies as gifts for friends who pine for Alaska.

Beautiful photographs chronicling the seasons in Alaska, as the weather changes and the days lengthen and shorten in the rhythms of the year. A lovely addition to the coffee table, a wonderful souvenir or reminder of an Alaskan vacation, or an educational volume for the curious mind.
