Having been fired out of the giant Columbiad space gun, the Baltimore Gun Club’s bullet-shaped projectile, along with its three passengers, Barbicane, Nicholl and Michel Ardan, begins the five-day trip to the moon. A few minutes into the journey, a small, bright asteroid passes within a few hundred yards of them, but luckily does not collide with the projectile. The asteroid had been captured by the Earth’s gravity and had become a second moon. The three travelers undergo a series of adventures and misadventures during the rest of the journey, including disposing of the body of a dog out a window, suffering intoxication by gases, and making calculations leading them, briefly, to believe that they are to fall back to Earth. During the latter part of the voyage, it becomes apparent that the gravitational force of their earlier encounter with the asteroid has caused the projectile to deviate from its course...

A very exciting and entertaining read By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson This book picks up immediately after From the Earth to the Moon ended. Our three intrepid astronauts are now on their way to the Moon, and begin making amazing discoveries immediately. It seems that the Earth’s gravity has captured a new small satellite, an erstwhile meteor. However, the gravity of this small companion has caused a deviation of the trajectory of their ship, and it appears that they are not going to land on the Moon after all, but merely orbit it. But all is not lost, there are still more discoveries to make, and who knows what they might think of along the way!Jules Verne’s From the Earth to the Moon was first published in 1865(!), and this book was published in 1870, in answer to the public’s demand to know what became of the astronauts. This book is as much fun as the first book in the series. True, the science behind this book is even less accurate than the first, but it is, nonetheless a very exciting and entertaining read. If you want to read a really entertaining work of paleo-science-fiction, then get this book, you will not be disappointed!

Basically, we have a cartographic exploration of the lunar body, and exploration. Those aboard must also struggle to find a way back to Earth safely, so that they may continue to go on living, and not be the first human corpsicles on record.

One of Verne's great space novels By A Customer The sequel to From the Earth to the Moon I found incredible, for the charaters make a very accurate map of the moon. However, they eventually get caught in a predicament of returning to Earth, but they make it back.

Review "A must have resource for any campaign! Detailed and to the point." - Josh Markus, CrowdNow Advisors"I highlighted about 25% of this book because there was so much good information to remember." - Matt Carney"I have been listening to a crowdfunding podcast and talking to a crowdfunding agency for a while. This book covered all the points yet did not have any of the fluff to waste my time." - G. Cope, verified Amazon purchase"I have read dozens of books on crowd funding and projects for crowdfunding. And in terms of quality content Mr. Hogue has nailed it." - Heisenberg"It's so nice to find a step-by-step book that actually means it! So many people think they know crowdfunding but don't really. Joseph Hogue not only has the experience but he also has the skills to communicate it to you in a clean, concise manner. You can either get the job done with this book and be ahead of everyone else or you can try all the other books and then try this one." - Darren Howarter"I'm interested in crowdfunding to help raise money for a car share cooperative for which I volunteer as a Board member. But I knew very little about crowd funding, so was attracted to this book. I was not disappointed. Comprehensive, specific, detailed, and thorough are the descriptors that come to mind. I think the book is invaluable for crowdfunding novices like me, but I think even a crowdfunding veteran would get good value from the book." - Kurt Fischer"Joseph has an uncanny ability to clearly and concisely communicate topics in everyday, easy to read language. Consider Step by Step Crowdfunding your go to resource to get that project, business, whatever it may be, funded and off the ground. You'll be glad you did." - Patrick Peterson

From the Author I am so glad you found this book...and I know you will be just as glad after reading it.I have been consulting crowdfunding campaigns, from small business startups to nonprofit organizations, for more than five years. Raising money from the crowd is a huge opportunity but very few know the true process involved. There's a reason nearly two-thirds of all campaigns end in failure. That is why I wanted to lay out the entire process. No fluff and no false promises, just the step-by-step process to raise money crowdfunding and fundraising. I'm excited to share the process with you and know that it will help you meet your crowdfunding goals.

From the Back Cover Step-by-Step Crowdfunding details everything you need to raise money from the crowd for a small business, startup, personal project or nonprofit campaign. Crowdfunding and social fundraising has opened up a world of finance only previously available to those with powerful connections and deep pockets. But it's not free money. You'll have to work every bit as hard as you would in traditional fundraising and business funding and you absolutely must know the process to be successful. The media hype around crowdfunding as a get-rich-scheme for small business startups and fundraising neglects the reality that most crowdfunding campaigns fall short of their funding goals. I want you to be successful in crowd funding your business startup or personal project. I want you to take advantage of all the benefits there are in this new phenomenon and help me to spread the word. To do that, you have to understand two important ideas within this book.First, that there is a process to be successfully raising money in crowdfunding. From pre-launching your fundraising idea through building a community around your brand and leveraging your crowdfunding campaign to really blow through your funding goal. I'll take you through all 17 steps to researching, launching and managing a successful crowdfunding campaign. As important as the monetary benefits to crowdfunding are the other benefits you'll get to your small business or nonprofit organization. As a social phenomenon, crowdfunding offers some huge benefits to marketing and customer relationship management. Where else can you take your business idea viral with a free page on a site that gets over 13 million visitors a month? Where else can you convert your customers into team members that will be cheerleaders for your brand? Only in crowdfunding and through an understanding of marketing in the crowd.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Great resource By Doug Erlandson Crowdfunding was a concept all but unknown before the advent of the internet and social media. Over the past several years it has become an increasingly popular way to fund projects. However, as “Step-by-step Crowdfunding,” by Joseph Hogue, points out, a majority of crowd funding attempts do not reach their goal, and some wind up raising nothing. How to run a successful crowd funding campaign is the message of the book. The subtitle of the book, "Everything You Need to Raise Money From the Crowd," is an apt description of its contents, since Hogue covers clearly and in detail every aspect of crowdfunding. The book is divided into three parts, the first two of roughly equal length, the third much shorter. The first part is “Pre-Launch Crowdfunding.” It covers such topics as shaping a successful crowdfunding idea, choosing a crowdfunding platform, campaign research, setting realistic goals, creating and driving visitors to your campaign blog, and marketing.Part Two of the book is “Running a Successful Crowdfunding Campaign.” Here Hogue focuses on the campaign itself, emphasizing issues such as how to build community around your campaign, getting the best bang for your crowdfunding marketing, and keeping your community motivated. The last section, “Post-Campaign Fulfillment and Community,” discusses how to fulfill your promises and keep the momentum going.Anyone who is considering a campaign should first read this book. For that matter, even if you’re not planning on a crowdfunding venture, reading this book is still valuable, since several of its chapters contain worthwhile general information on using social media to your advantage.I received a pdf copy of this book from the author in exchange for writing an honest preview, which I am happy to provide.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Well written book 5 stars. By Heisenberg I have read dozens of books on crowd funding and projects for crowdfunding. And in terms of quality content Mr. Hogue has nailed it. Most books I have read are the boiler plate standard of copy and pasted wording from the old chilton/sheets manuals of the 1960 for Grant writers and government budgets. Well Im trying to crowd fund a project, not fund NASA or the Mayo Clinic for research money. I just needed a step by step approach that would be effective. So I am taking the suggestions and taking notes. It seems to be very straight forward.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great guide on crowdfunding By Gaston A. In this extremely readable book, author Joseph Hogue takes us step-by-step through the crowdfunding process, covering everything from planning, to the advantages and drawbacks of different crowdfunding platforms, and beyond. In explaining the process, the author provides useful data to support his points, and presents useful insights as to what one should consider in setting up and executing a successful crowdfunding campaign. Although I did not previously think of crowdfunding as a viable option for financing businesses, this book has definitely broadened my perspectives.

I'd give a full five stars, but this exact same book was also published under the name "Koi: Living Jewels of the Orient." Unfortunately, I purchased both so I have two copies of the same thing. As far as I can tell (as a newbie to koi keeping) the information is accurate and reasonably up to date. I was hoping for more in-depth information on pond filtration components and choices.

The story deals with two European men, named Kayerts and Carlier, who are assigned to a trading post in a remote part of the African Jungle. There they take part in ivory trading, hoping to financially benefit the company as well as themselves. With no specific tasks or important things to be done, they both become increasingly isolated and demoralized as the time goes by. At one point in the story, the native Makola, serving as Kayerts's and Carlier's bookkeeper, initiates an exchange of slaves for ivory. Initially Kayerts and Carlier are stunned and scandalized by the idea, yet eventually they accept the deal and aid Makola for his huge profit. Both men are continuously plagued by diseases and grow very weak physically towards the end of the story. Finally, a seemingly trivial matter - sugar - sparks an irrational, uncontrolled and violent conflict between them, and ends tragically as Kayerts accidentally shoots and kills Carlier. At the end of the story, just when the company steamboat approaches the station two months later than it should have, Kayerts hangs himself out of desperation.

Mental Unrest By Luc REYNAERT In these tales, people are put under heavy mental stress by fatal accidents, hostile environments or insoluble doubts. Their reactions become uncontrollable. The short stories give a good picture of Conrad's themes, story building with surprising outcomes and view on mankind: `Morality is not a method of happiness'.In `Karain: a Memory', a Malay war-chief makes an odyssey trying to kill a woman who left her native village with a white man. He becomes haunted by the spirit of his dead brother. In `The Lagoon', the adduction of a woman turns into a fatal accident. `There is no light and no peace in the world; but there is death - death for many. I left him in the midst of the enemies; but I am going back.'In `An outpost of Progress', two lonely `progressive' colonialists become haunted by their hostile environment; `a suggestion of things vague, uncontrollable, and repulsive, whose discomposing intrusion tries the civilized nerves.'In `The Return', a marriage turns sour on the impossible `certitude of love and faith'.In `The Idiots', a less successful offspring puts a marriage under extreme pressure. These sometimes furiously written stories with their high evocative power of landscapes, feelings and conflicts should not be missed.

9 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Probing the Murky Waters ot the Soul By Plume45 his anthology of 216 pages provides an excellent introduction for new readers to Polish-born Joseph Conrad, who deftly paints on an English canvass. Having selected five of his tales the editors present readers with settings in both the exotic tropics of Malaysia and Africa, as well as the chilly social milieus of socialite London and pastoral France. Perhaps the editors chose the word UNREST for their title, because all the protagonists experience psychological malaise from a diversity of causes. KARAIN. This Malay chieftain feels cursed by his past, so he desperately seekst a new English charm to ward off his fatal stalker. THE IDIOTS. A simple French peasant couple are cursed by bearing children who are severely mentally retarded. OUTPOST OF PROGRESS. The title is sheer irony, since a useless African trading station is run by two ineffectual English agents. The men are pursued by their failed pasts, general laziness, incompetence, extreme heat and company indifference. THE RETURN. A young socialite husband returns home to discover a note from his wife, explaining that she has left him for another man. In this most psychological of the tales, the wronged husband undergoes a series of intense emotions and decisions, ultimately defying the very Society he represents. THE LAGOON. A native is pre-grieving the death of his beloved wife, unburdening his soul before his only white friend. Although this represents Conrad's first published short story, curiously it concludes this particular anthology. Prepare to explore the murky waters of the human heart and soul.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five Terrific Takes By Charles Van Cott I enjoyed all five stories, liking The Idiots, An Outpost of Progress and The Lagoon the best. I would have given five stars, but these words do not hit the same level as Heart of darkness, Lord Jim, Nostromo or The Secret Agent.

"[...]of the palace were filled by men, women, and children—some bringing leathern doublets of every cut and colour, some with tales of what they had heard and seen in their walks round about the palace. So much news about all sorts of great people came out of these stories, that lords and ladies ran to complain of Spare as one who spoke against people. His Majesty, being now sure that there was no example in all the palace records of such a retainer, sent forth a decree sending the cobbler away for ever from the Court, and giving all his goods to the page Tinseltoes. That royal decree was hardly issued before the page had taken for himself Spare's rich room, his costly garments, and all the presents the people at Court[...]".

Granny's Wonderful Chair, by Frances Browne

About the Author Frances Hodgson Burnett was a born storyteller. Even as a young child, her greatest pleasure was in making up stories and acting them out, using her dolls as characters. She wrote over forty books, including the classic A Little Princess, also illustrated by Tasha Tudor.

A Collection of Tales Loved By Frances Hodgson Burnett By Terrie Frances Browne, the author of this enchanting and original collection of fairy tales lived between 1816 and 1879. She was blinded by smallpox when she was a baby and so all of the vivid descriptions in this charming book are from her own memory of the tales that she heard as a child and from her colorful imagination. In 1904 Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote an introduction for a new edition of the book because as a little child she had won a copy of it as a prize for good behavior in school. It became her favorite book but was lost to her over the years. She searched high and low for it and it eventually surfaced in Boston and again in a second hand shop in London. This edition contains the introduction by Burnett that is certainly an added treat. It is brilliantly illustrated by Switzerland's Gisele Rime with her characteristic bright colors and whimsical decorative borders. Unlike other collections of fairy tales these are completely original and bring us new characters and plots with gentle moral lessons. The fame of Frances Browne may not approach the Grimms or Andersen but the beauty and cleverness of her tales will enchant and delight you just the same. Curl up in Granny's wonderful chair, snuggle close and follow the stories of Fairyfoot and Childe Charity, Prince Wisewit and Merry Mind. Meet the Lords of the White and Grey Castles. This is a grand experience not just a good book.

Perhaps snuggling into her favorite chair when you were too tired to possibly do anything else? Do you recall the comfort, the smell, the feel, the total release of 'Grandma's' chair? This was one my of favorite 'escape' books as a child. I would curl up in 'Granny's Wonderful Chair' and be transported to many a wonderous place. I have searched for many years for this title, and was so excited to see it unearthed for republishing! We will be reading it aloud as a family now. Granny's Wonderful Chair is a great addition not only to your library, but to you and your children's memory's as well!

A wonderful collection of creative and pleasing stories By Molly Grue Young Snowflower lives with her grandmother, Dame Frostyface, in a little cottage at the edge of a forest. The two are very poor, and own only a cat, two hens, a bed of dried grass, and one good piece of furniture: "a great armchair with wheels on its feet, a black velvet cushion, and many curious carvings of flowers and fawns on its dark oaken back."One day, Dame Frostyface leaves to visit her aunt, and asks Snowflower to remain behind. She tells the girl that the fancy armchair was made by a cunning fairy, and that it is enchanted. If Snowflower should feel lonely, she should lay her head gently on the cushion of the armchair and say, "Chair of my grandmother, tell me a story. Should Snowflower have the occasion to travel, she should sit in the chair and say, "Chair of my grandmother, take me such a way."After an interval of solitude, Snowflower's food stores are nearly depleted, so she decides to travel in the armchair along the same path her grandmother took. While journeying, she hears that King Winwealth plans to give a seven day feast to celebrate the birth of his only daughter, Princess Greedalind. Snowflower, who is quite hungry, wishes to share in the feast, and travels to the palace in the enchanted armchair.Since the disappearance of his brother, Prince Wisewit, King Winwealth has been an unhappy ruler, especially since his marriage to the covetous and disagreeable Queen Wantall and the birth of their unpleasant child. The King's low spirits prompt his favorite page to suggest that Snowflower's chair might provide some diversion, so she and the chair are summoned to the banquet each evening to entertain the king. Each evening, the chair tells a different story until a total of seven stories are told: "The Christmas Cuckoo", "The Lords of the White and Grey Castles", "The Greedy Shepard", "The Story of Fairyfoot", "The Story of Childe Charity", "Sour and Civil", and "The Story of Merrymind". As each consecutive evening passes, the king's depression lifts and Snowflower's situation improves, until all of the stories end happily together. This wonderful collection of creative and pleasing stories will entertain fairytale enthusiasts of all ages.

Best PDF Ebook What's Your Future Worth?: Using Present Value to Make Better Decisions, by Peter Neuwirth FSA

We weigh every significant decision based on how it will affect our future. But when it comes to figuring that out, we mostly make the process up as we go along. While financial professional Peter Neuwirth can't help you actually predict the future, he can offer a simple, systematic way to make much better guesses about it—and so make better decisions.Neuwirth offers an accessible, step-by-step guide to using the powerful concept of Present Value—which allows you to determine the value today of something that might happen in the future—to evaluate all of the outcomes that might arise from choosing one path as opposed to another. Using examples that anyone can relate to, Neuwirth walks you through the process. Your old refrigerator doesn't work as well as it used to—should you buy a new one right away or muddle through for a while? You're offered a great discount on a service you don't need at the moment but eventually will—buy the service now or wait? With just a little math and some common sense, you can compare future costs and benefits with present costs and benefits and make “apples to apples” comparisons. This book will be indispensable for anyone who has ever had to figure out whether to stick with an awful job or follow his or her bliss, fix that old car or buy a new one, increase 401(k) contributions or keep the same take-home pay, and a thousand other decisions.

What's Your Future Worth?: Using Present Value to Make Better Decisions, by Peter Neuwirth FSA

Review “The future comes sooner than you might think. Reading What's Your Future Worth? is a great way to prepare.”—Steve Vernon, FSA, author of Money for Life“Provides a great deal of important insight into the intractability of the future, the idiosyncratic nature of how humans perceive the passage of time, and how best to approach the many decisions that all of us face on a day-to-day basis.” —Eric Baum, PhD, computer scientist and expert on artificial intelligence; CEO, Azure Sky Research; and author of What Is Thought?“A must-read for professionals and the general public alike. If only bankers had had this book in the early 2000s, we might have been spared the Great Recession!”—James Kenney, FSA, EA, President and CEO, Kenney Consulting LLC“Makes Present Value compelling, interesting, and accessible; it's a concept for us all to embrace in making important life or financial decisions for the short term, long term, and even the very distant future as our legacies.”—Jennifer S. Gorovitz, estate planning and nonprofit attorney, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, and former CEO, Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund of San Francisco

About the Author Peter Neuwirth has over thirty years of actuarial experience. He is currently a senior consultant with Towers Watson and is one of its subject matter experts. He is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and an enrolled actuary. In his personal life, Peter has used Present Value to decide if he should take a time-share company up on its offer of a cheap vacation rental in Kauai, what kind of running shoes to buy, and whether to get married, among other quandaries.

Approach your life with a new paradigm, in which uncertainty is not an enemy, but a medium for self-expression By James Kenney Being an actuary is a weird profession. We are trained to see the future as a jigsaw puzzle of little pieces, the majority of which will explode in our face as soon as we touch them. Not only that, we're guaranteed that one day, despite all our caution, prudence and the powerful tools of our training in Present Value analysis, SOMETHING will explode and that will be that. They call economics "the dismal science", but actuarial science is potentially even worse. That said, the truly miraculous thing about being a human is that we can foresee the future, "through a glass darkly," perhaps, but still we CAN foresee it. The sad part is that we tend to use our unique gift to generate anxiety, worry and self-doubt. Pete Neuwirth's book shows it doesn't have to be this way, and demonstrates step by step, in an eminently readable fashion, how to turn this mental trick of ours into an advantage, instead of a source of dread. He will teach you how to banish dread through a process of envisioning multiple futures, assigning a value (perhaps a monetary value, as actuaries normally do, but actually, any sort of value, however personal or even transpersonal) to each, and blending them all together to make the best decision you can, in the teeth of the uncertainty that faces us all.His examples, such as whether to buy a new refrigerator, can equally well be used (perhaps better used) to decide much more transcendent dilemmas, such as whether to become a painter, pursue a spiritual path with vigor, risk rejection by being more vulnerable with your partner, or stand up and be counted when you strongly disagree with a decision a group is about to make.Yes, this book can help you learn to make better decisions, not just subjectively better, but demonstrably better. In a deeper sense, though, the book opens the door to a new way of seeing yourself in relationship to others, and even to time itself.Easy to read, not dependent on mathematics, with amusing and vivid examples, this book holds out the possibility of approaching your life with a new paradigm, in which uncertainty is not an enemy, but a medium for self-expression, like the paint Van Gogh used to create his masterpieces.Make your life into the masterpiece you've always wanted. Neuwirth's book is a good first step on that road. I highly recommend it.

Better Decision Making is in your Future By Lara Heller What’s Your Future Worth articulates a process of decision-making that is thoughtful, deliberate and accesible. Neuwirth distills a few decades of experience as an actuary, where he honed his skills and developed his vision on how to better make decisions based on their near- and long-term impact. The book lays out a clear five-step process for considering a wide range of decisions – small to large, minor to life-changing – in a way that is quite approachable (and doesn’t require any math!).However, for me the value of the book went well beyond the particular process. Whether Neuwirth consciously intended it or not, the book helped me really think about what’s important to me and how I make decisions. It wasn’t all pleasant at first! I came to see that, in the rush to make a decision, I can too quickly narrow my options. But I also saw how my drive to “get through the process” can skew the results, and not usually favorably. By slowing down, opening to a broader and longer-term perspective and letting some types of decisions percolate, I’ll be happier over the long-term. In practicing this a bit as I read the book, I gained some clarity in some real-life decisions I’ve been working with. I can't recommend this book more highly!

Sacks "What's Your Future Worth?" is innovative and insightful. It provides a way of thinking about decisions, and a way of articulating those thoughts, that lead to better decisions. It helps move into many important decisions from the fuzzy unconscious realm to the clearer conscious realm.

Betsy Bobbin, a girl who is a year older than Dorothy Gale, and her loyal mule Hank are washed ashore during a storm. They arrive at a large greenhouse that is the domain of the Rose Kingdom, where the roses tell them that no strangers are allowed. Just as the Royal Gardener (apparently the only human allowed in this flowery kingdom) is about to pass sentence on Betsy and Hank, the Shaggy Man falls through the greenhouse's roof, and charms the Gardener into sparing all of their lives with his Love Magnet. The flowers, not having hearts, are unaffected by the Magnet, and force the travellers to leave, taking with them the newly plucked Rose Princess Ozga, a cousin of Ozma, the ruler of Oz.

Oz All-Stars By Blake Petit Like the previous Oz book, "Rinkitink in Oz," this was an outing by Baum that scores by deviating a bit from the standard Oz formula. The characters in the book are on a journey, as usual, but instead of trying to get to the Emerald City, the characters are departing that city to find the missing Princess Ozma who, along with most of the powerful magical objects in Oz, has vanished. Furthermore, Baum puts together one of the largest primary casts ever in an Oz book, including Dorothy and Toto, the Wizard, the Patchwork Girl, the Sawhorse, the Cowardly Lion, Betsy Bobbin and Hank, Trot and Button-Bright and the Woozy, as well as adding the Frogman, Cayke the Cookie Cook and the Big Lavender Bear and the Little Pink Bear. While it's nice to see to many characters, it does hurt the book somewhat -- it shows really how superfluous Besty and Trot are with Dorothy around, and it includes a bizarre little subplot with Toto that doesn't really add much. Furthermore, the ending is really syrupy and saccharine, even for an Oz book. The addition of the Frogman is a major plus, though -- he is easily the most entertaining new character added to the series since Scraps the Patchwork Girl, and it was nice to have a book that for once didn't rely on the old villains like the Nome King or the old deus ex machina of Ozma's magic picture and Glinda's magic book. In fact, I kind of wish those two items had stayed lost -- other Oz books rely on them entirely too much for their resolution.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. A Lost Princess By A Customer The Lost Princess of Oz is one of L. Frank Baum's most imaginative books. It begins with a serious problem, Ozma's disappearance, and with many of the favorite characters. Yet in a parallel story, an early chapter takes us to the Winkie Country and introduces us to some delightful new characters, The Frogman and Cayke the Cookie Cook. We know that Cayke's stolen magic dishpan is somehow related to Ozma's disappearance.I love the role that Scraps, the Patchwork Girl, plays in this book. We meet some whimsical new villages and the beings who inhabit them. We pay attention to small details that are nonetheless important to those most affected by them, such as Toto's missing growl. Illusions are turned upside down and inside out, making us think. It's a delightful journey, all in all, one that I highly recommend.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Great fun to read By F. Orion Pozo Tik-Tok of Oz by L. Frank Baum (Books of Wonder edition)Tik-Tok of Oz is a delightful book with an interesting story of how it came to be. A small Editor's Note by Peter Glassman on page 10 of this book tells the story. There had been two successful stage plays based on the first two Oz books and Baum wanted to write a play based on the third, Ozma of Oz. However, he found out he couldn't use many of the characters because he had already sold the stage rights to them. He took the plot of the third book and changed Dorothy and Ozma into two new characters Betsy Bobbin and Queen Ann Soforth. Then he used the popular Shaggy Man who was introduced in The Road to Oz and changed many of the incidents in the story to create a new script for the stage that he called The Tik-Tok Man of Oz. The play was a success so he then rewrote it into this novel. If you have read Ozma of Oz, you will indeed see the similarities. Once again an army of one soldier and many officers is led by a girl leader in an attack against the Nome King. This time it is Queen Ann Soforth from the smallest and poorest kingdom in Oz. She is young and tired of her tiny kingdom and wants to seek adventure. When her sister jokingly suggests that Ann raise an army and conquer Oz, Ann likes the idea. She convinces all but one of the eighteen men of her kingdom to join her army and they set out. However, the sorceress Glinda, learns of her plans and magically transports Ann and her army across the Deadly Desert and out of Oz entirely.Meanwhile Betsy Bobbin, like Dorothy in Ozma of Oz, is lost at sea in a storm with her companion Hank the Mule. They are cast up on shore of the Rose Kingdom where they meet up with the Rose Princess, the Shaggy Man and Polychrome, the Rainbow's daughter. This group goes on a quest with the Shaggy Man who is seeking his lost brother, a prisoner of the Nome King. They meet up with Queen Ann's army and Tik-Tok. This large group decides to go in search of the Nome King together.Their quest leads them to the fairy kingdom of the great Jinjin, Tititi-Hoochoo where they meet a young dragon named Quox. Their encounter with the Nome King is terribly amusing and their search for the Shaggy Man's brother has a remarkable outcome. What starts out as a reworking of another story takes on a life of its own to become an entertaining and amusing story. The John R. Neill illustrations are wonderful and there are 12 full-page color plates. The end papers present the first published map of the land of Oz.

These few words of review cannot possibly do justice to Tom Walker’s talent as naturalist, writer, and, most of all, gifted wildlife photographer. Each photo contained in Alaska Wildlife Through the Seasons seems to have been taken at exactly the right time and in exactly the right location to display the wonder of Alaska’s wildlife in each season of the year. The textual descriptions introducing each section of the book, as well as the capsule summaries accompanying every photograph, benefit from the author’s in-depth knowledge of Alaska, its majestic landscape, and its myriad of beings. The written and visual descriptions of the seasonal comings and goings of Alaska’s creatures are, simply put, fascinating. A wide variety of birds arrive in spring (I learned that Alaska is home to 501 species of birds, most of them migratory) to join young bear cubs, dall sheep lambs, and moose and caribou calves. The vibrant pictures of each of these are stunning. My favorite shows two mountain goat kids perched atop a granite boulder, nuzzling in the safety of their steep terrain. In summer, Alaska’s land and its sea are teeming with life. Pictures include a humpback whale leaping out of the sea in Alaska’s Inside Passage, a grizzly bear just at the point of snaring a leaping red salmon, and a majestic bull caribou with its summer antlers covered in velvet. Favorites in this section are a tiny roufus hummingbird which has traveled 3900 miles from Mexico to enjoy Alaska’s brief summer, and a band of dall sheep grazing in an alpine meadow. When the two-to-three month Alaska summer comes to an end, the bull caribou (shown vividly in the opening picture of the autumn chapter) now has fully-developed antlers and a rich, colorful coat. It’s about to begin its migration to warmer climes, along with other mammals, land and sea, fish and many birds. This section’s photos include dall sheep butting their heads together in a battle for dominance, three bull caribou swimming in a river with a backdrop of Alaskan mountains, a trumpeter swan flexing its wings, and a sandhill crane feeding to gain weight prior to heading south. Pictures of two bull caribou locked in battle, a gigantic grizzly bear resting after failing in a quest for food, and a female wolf charging through shallow water, were among my favorites. The final chapter brings the book and the Alaskan year to a close. Sometimes winters come gradually, sometimes with a roaring suddenness. Walker’s words and pictures describe how species survive the brutal winters (some escape by moving southward, others hibernate, still others move across the frozen Alaskan terrtain scavenging for food). Photos included in this section include shots of arctic foxes, bald eagles, a great horned owl, polar bears, bull moose, and musk oxen. My absolute favorite photo is that of a large caribou, antlers still intact, moving across the winter snow. Another amazing photograph shows the beauty of the northern lights painted across the otherwise dark Alaskan landscape. While I’ve never been to Alaska, this book has given me a vivid impression of the beauty and wonder of the state’s wildlife and landscape. I highly recommend Alaska Wildlife Through the Seasons to anyone planning to travel to Alaska, or to anyone simply wishing to see and learn more about Alaska and its magnificent array of wildlife.

The voice in the text is as beautiful and awe-inspiring as the photos. This is a photo book that provides a wide variety of wildlife in unique settings to suite the reader's every mood. These are not simply "cute" wildlife photos; they capture the peace and beauty of the wilderness that provides habitat for these amazing creatures. I am pleased with the high quality of this book and the very reasonable price. My copy is already well-used by my elementary students. I will order another copy to enjoy at home and more copies as gifts for friends who pine for Alaska.

Beautiful photographs chronicling the seasons in Alaska, as the weather changes and the days lengthen and shorten in the rhythms of the year. A lovely addition to the coffee table, a wonderful souvenir or reminder of an Alaskan vacation, or an educational volume for the curious mind.

Walters Mr. Keats clearly and systematically explains that the current advice of sending high net worth Canadians "off shore" is bad advice.Mr. Keats takes the reader through all of the possible income sources to show that by moving to the US a high net worth individual would do better in all but one of the income types and tie on the last income type. However, what may be the most important point Mr. Keats points out is that lifestyle is the most important consideration. Even if going to a tax shelter island was the best financial decision, people feel like prisoners on the island after a short period of time and that is now way to live in your retirement. The book will totally change the way high net worth Canadians and their advisors think about the issue of finding a place to live in retirement.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Poorly written, poor content By B Clare Johnson Very little content, nothing covered re: qualifications for the correct status. Seems to be nothing but an add to hire a financial planner, one in particular.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Barely worth the time By Ronald K. Meyer Spends too much time trashing conventional tax havens and not enough detail about using the US instead. Guess he wants to force readers to contact his firm?
