Very much like A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens By Jan Thompson I got this free for my Kindle and was very surprised that it was really a good story. Very much like the Charles Dickens story, "A Christmas Carol". You've got a bitter older woman who is going through an old box of toys. She throws some of them outside in the snow to see what people will do. She comes to this Christmas Angel ornament and it takes her to where the thrown away toys ended up. Her long lost brother comes by and they reunite. An abused, orphaned little girl becomes a part of their family. It was a pretty predictable story but a very good one! This could easily become a Christmas tradition in many households!

The city hermetically sealed, empty of all lifeforms and is of near human construction. We have been studying in for the last century and a half. Are we any closer to understanding what it's all about? One theory brings to mind the old bromide - a barbarian can never learn what a gentleman is because the barbarian can not recognize that he isn't a gentleman. The moment he recognize that fact he ceases to be a barbarian.This 1959 short is a pretty fun little read.

About the Author Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835 - 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He is most noted for his novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called "the Great American Novel." When Tom Sawyer Abroad was published in 1894, it marked the first time in a nearly a decade that fans of Mark Twain’s now-classic tales of boyhood got a further glimpse of their heroes in action. Its similarities to Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days and other popular adventure tales of the time—tales which have inspired today’s Steampunk subculture—were entirely intentional. Twain, ever the satirist, could not pass up the opportunity to poke fun at literature’s adventure genre. Twain was also very much aware of the public’s interest in exotic lands, cultures and peoples—stimulated by events such as Sir Richard Burton’s exploration of the Muslim holy city of Mecca, Sir David Livingstone’s travels in Africa, the opening of the Suez Canal in 1871, and his own successful travelogue, The Innocents Abroad (1869), an account of his travels in Europe and the Holy Land.

By Daren Henry Wilkerson If you really want to sink your teeth into three of Mark Twain's greatest characters, read this book. I actually prefer it over Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Twain went much deeper in defining the characters; Tom thinks he knows everything and loves to argue, Huck takes everything literally and loves to argue back, and Jim is well. . . Jim! I will say this: If anyone has ever found the portrayal of Jim offensive, it's no different here, but I'm assuming that if you're considering reading this, you must have enjoyed the other two books. So, what are you waiting for, read it!

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. JUVENILE ARGONAUTS OVER THE SAHARA By Plume45 This book picks up right after the hullaballo has died down from Tom and Huck's triumphal return. Tom kinda craves notoriety as he competes for the unofficial title of Hannibal's First Traveler. Then Tom, Huck and Jim are accidentally kidnapped by a mad inventor and go sailing off in a hot-air balloon. They eventually find themselves adrift over the Atlantic Ocean but when they sight land, it is not Europe! This book is told with youthful zest and slangy vocabulary by an admiring Huck in the first person, so that he can praise Tom's leadership skills and powers of argument! The three unintentional argonauts finally realize that they are sailing over the Sahara Desert, where they have a variety of adventures, interspersed with juvenile deductions and debates. Their adventures are right out of Arabian Nights: no magic lamp or genies, but caravans, lions, mirages, warring Bedouin tribes, devastating sand storms! All interspersed with Tawin's wry humor as he slips in some snide remarks about more serious social issues (spoken through the mouths of babes). Not much of a plot, but plenty of lively dialogue as the boys try to argue using logic and indulge in youthful dreams of sudden fortune. A fun read with sly social criticism. But really, Mark Twain, Tigers--in Africa???

I'm surprised that I wasn't made to read it back in junior high or high school, when I undoubtedly wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly as much. It's not nearly as in-depth a tale as Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn, but nevertheless it's an enjoyable, light read about three friends going on an amazing journey. There are strong elements of steampunk in this, which is doubly wonderful because it was actually written during that very same period. The best part of all are the stories, discussions, and arguments between Tom, Huck, and Jim over the course of their travels.
