Your first port of call for a quantitative perspective on energy markets By Christopher McCoy I have been involved in multiple roles in energy and commodity markets for the greater part of two decades. I would concur with the previous reviewer - if you don't have any experience in energy markets, after reading this book carefully you should be able to have a meaningful conversation with anyone in the field. Commodity markets, and especially energy, have many nuances. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the various approaches to valuation and risk management, but more than that it addresses the choices involved in using them in practice. The worked examples are not trite. They are as much case studies as a review of quantitative methods which should be in every quant's arsenal applied to plausible deals. It also proposes a coherent way to grasp and work with the often complex risks inherent in deal flow. It points to potential avenues of fruitful research. This is, understandably, mostly in terms of practical application, but budding academics are not left completely dry. This book should have multiple audiences. In fact, for anyone interested in the topic, it is a worthwhile investment.

I've been an equity quant for the past 7 years and i bought this book because I wanted to learn about the energy markets. It proved to be the ideal introduction into the subject: it offers a detailed account of the energy markets, of the challenges involved in the pricing/hedging of some of the most common instruments and it describes the modelling paradigms specific to the field. I think the book is appropriate for quants, traders and risk managers.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. a book for trading By Bernd Kotz The special in energy valuation is that normal principles are adapted to the specials of the industry. In this book you have the core principle in valuation and risk management. There are many books published in the last decade about the theme. It starts with the stylized facts, volatility and specials of the different commodity markets. The basis of the valuation is explained and he turns to the different communities and explains what really is relevant. In the macroeconomic perspective the tree main commodities are explained. It is oil, gas and electricity. You have the detailed description of the markets and abnormalities. The strength of the book are the figures and the discussed issues, so that you can see the connection. I think there are some themes like the valuation of gas storage and swap books which gives you a different view. Like term structure of volatility, skew and correlation. The main parts concerns about the future contracts, differences to forwards and the time structure of the derivative and factor models. You get a deep insight of the valuation theme. The risk management is reduced to the mean, variance optimization, Greeks and swaps.

An Essential Guide for ANY Gold Prospector By Amazon Customer As President of Nye Gold Seekers in Pahrump, Nevada, I am extremely impressed with the comprehensive coverage of the subject of gold prospecting. While this book is a fantastic tool for new gold prospectors, I believe it is very useful for even the experts. The many links make the e-book a preferred format to expand the available knowledge base. Hard cover books provide references, but they are not as readily available as reference links in an e-book. Downloaded to a tablet or smart phone, the e-book is a ready reference while in the field searching for gold. Of special interest is the coverage of basic geology and mineralogy. This is "essential" to investigate prospective areas to search for gold and possibly stake a claim. There are many methods and techniques for finding and processing gold presented in the e-book. I recommend it highly.

I found the reading to be very intoxicating much like a good novel where you never know what's in the next chapter or how it's going to end. I especially liked the section on "Swauk Creek” in the state of Washington. I know the area well, but not the history of gold in the area. I look forward to using this book during my retirement to explore this area, have some adventure, and maybe find a little gold. I was surprised to learn about the Carlin area in Nevada where I worked on an extension to the Newmont underground mining facility. A GREAT read!

I can foresee this book becoming THE GOLD PROSPECTORS BIBLE By Captain Jim M name is Jim Young and I have been prospecting for a long time and I do a lot of research in a lot of different aspects of gold prospecting. I am also the President of South Mississippi Chapter-Gold Prospectors Association of America and also the Mississippi State Director. I state the above information so that you can understand that I do know what I am talking about. But, to make this very clear to all, the statements provided herein are my own personal thoughts and beliefs and I am NOT nor am I authorized to speak for the GPAA.In case you are wondering about why I am saying all this is that, FINALLY, I am really happy to see that someone has put so much information under one cover. I have, probably, most of the information in the book already but it is scattered through many studies, research papers, government documents, and other books (the accuracy of which sometimes is questionable). That is why I can foresee this book becoming THE GOLD PROSPECTORS BIBLE. This book contains a ton of information under one cover that could take a prospector or researcher hours and even days to find independently. Mr. Rapp openly states in his intro to the book and also in his press release that most of this information is freely available to the public. I agree with that, ...it is. However, as many long time prospectors know, finding the information and then trying to interpret technical or scholastic jargon and put in layman's terms is a trial in itself. Mr. Rapp has put the information in this book in a simple-to-read and even an enjoyable reading format that even a brand new "newbie" can understand it.The book contains a lot of information on the use of geology to prospect and what is in this book is the study of geology that is very specific to the search for gold and some other precious metals and minerals. Mr Rapp, also provides some general information about the tools and equipment used in prospecting, for instance, how dredges operate and how to set one up correctly, how to use a gold pan, sluice box, and some other methods to extract fine gold from black sand. Mr. Rapp states in his intro that it took seven years to put all this together.... and it shows. If there is such a designation I would definitely nominate this book as the "GOLD PROSPECTORS BIBLE". It is that good and I have never found any other publication with this much information in it. I highly recommend this to all persons interested in prospecting and will state emphatically that any serious prospector should have this book in his library. I also hope that Mr. Rapp will eventually publish this book under hard cover because I would like the ability to carry it with me in the field and also be able to place it in my prospecting library. My recommendation for anyone interested in this topic is to definitely get your own copy...

Late in June the vast northwestern desert of wheat began to take on a tinge of gold, lending an austere beauty to that endless, rolling, smooth world of treeless hills, where miles of fallow ground and miles of waving grain sloped up to the far-separated homes of the heroic men who had conquered over sage and sand. These simple homes of farmers seemed lost on an immensity of soft gray and golden billows of land, insignificant dots here and there on distant hills, so far apart that nature only seemed accountable for those broad squares of alternate gold and brown, extending on and on to the waving horizon-line. A lonely, hard, heroic country, where flowers and fruit were not, nor birds and brooks, nor green pastures. Whirling strings of dust looped up over fallow ground, the short, dry wheat lay back from the wind, the haze in the distance was drab and smoky, heavy with substance.[...]

The Desert of Wheat, by Zane Grey

Review "Readable and engrossing." --The New York Times

From the Back Cover Zane Grey is one of America's most popular and enduring authors, the man behind the classic Western Riders of the Purple Sage.

The Desert of Wheat is a thrilling and romantic tale of sabotage in the wheat fields of the Pacific Northwest during World War I. A passionate novel of patriotic and anti-union propaganda, it portrays the anxieties of the young country threatened by a foreign war after the closing of the frontier. Grey captures the heart of a nation at the brink of a century of change.

About the Author American author and the originator of Western novels. Grey was a prolific writer and wrote more than 80 books which sold over 13,000,000 copies in his lifetime. His first novel, Betty Zane, was published in 1904. His thrilling tales of the American West are notable for their sense of adventure and drama. The most popular of these are Riders of the Purple Sage (1912), The Lone Star Ranger (1915), Call of the Canyon (1924), and Code of the West (1934). Grey also wrote some non-fictional books, of which Tales of Fishing (1925) was the most successful.

A classic Western tale By Midwest Book Review Zane Grey's The Desert Of Wheat is the powerful story of Kurt Dorn, a young farmer facing a moral dilemma between going to France to fight the Germans or staying in America to protect the woman he loves and his wheat crop grown with the sweat of hard labor. A classic Western tale, epitomizing Zane Grey's undeniable ability to capture the soul of life, love, and land, and vividly narrated by Jim Gough, The Desert Of Wheat is a superbly produced, complete and unabridged audiobook presentation and highly recommended for community library audiobook collections and the legions of dedicated Zane Grey fans.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. the desert of wheat By Granny Cook I was doubtful about the story at the beginning but as I continued to read I really got caught up in the plot and wondered how they would beat the labor group that was out to destroy the crops that had survived the lack of water. The romantic side light was cool too. I have seen the labor group initials in other articles so deduce it must have been a real group that did try to destroy the farmers around the time of the dust bowl. Great story and I truly did enjoy it once I got past the first few pages. My son ordered this on my account and told me to read it as he thought I would like it. IvaMay Cook

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Wheat Fed the Nation During the Great War By Charles Wheeler I cannot speak to this exact edition, but I can speak about its contents. Whether you are an old hand, or a greenhorn who has heard of Zane Grey and willing to try one of his books, The Desert of Wheat will not disappoint....unless you are expecting cowboys on horses or shoot-outs in the streets. This book has neither, but it does give us a taste of the conditions which existed during the period of years surrounding the 1st World War--especially the activity and philosophy of a group called the IWW. There is espionage, arson, murder, and intrigue all set in the wheat growing district of Washington state known as the Columbia Basin. Also, as with any Zane Grey book the vivid descriptions of landscape and his fully rounded and well developed characters are there, as well as the romance, all heightened amid the backdrop of the War--a German father who hates America; the son who wants to fight for America; the daughter of a rich banker who will do anything to keep the man she loves from going to war. The theme, the intense interaction of the characters involved make for one of the best of Zane Grey. A note of reminder: This was a contemporary novel, written and set and published during the time period it displays, so some of the language may seem dated in places, but true to the period and times. Zane Grey has often been charged with his broad use of colloquialisms, and in some of his later novels it does seem over used, but Zane Grey wrote the way he heard people speak. I highly recommend this version if you can not find or afford the unexpurgated version recently published in 2012, War Comes to the Big Bend. Either one will be worth your reading pleasure.

After getting a 51 & a 57 on my first Calculus II exams, I got desperate and purchased this book, as well as its prequel, "How To Ace Calculus." I read through both books all the way up to where I was in the course and had a revelation, Calculus finally made sense to me! I did extremely well on the next two exams and got the second best grade in the class on the final, ending up with a B in the course. Not too bad after getting a warning from the department in the middle of the semester, and it's all thanks to this book. It is an easy read, with very concise explanations and a dose of humor for good measure.

37 of 38 people found the following review helpful. Great Introduction By David This book is very strong (10 out of 10) for Calculus II, namely in the areas of indeterminant forms and improper integrals, polar coordinates, sequences and series, vectors, parametric coordinates, and graphing. It is pretty strong (9/10) in the areas of partial derivatives and integration of many variables. In vector fields, "How to Ace the Rest of Calculus" is sketchy. It covers divergence and curl well, as well as the basics about vector fields. However, the book does not do very well (6/10) in explaining the finer points in vector fields, such as Line and Surface Integrals, Green's Theorem, and Stoke's Theorems, in which more examples would be useful. If a problem arises in line or surface integrals (including Green's and Stoke's Theorems), don't look to this book to clear it up.I would recommend this book purely as the authors intended, an introduction--nothing more and nothing less.

30 of 31 people found the following review helpful. Calculus in Plain English By Chuck R. This book is not a substitute for a textbook. By itself it seems like the explanations are too simple. This book comes in vary handy when I combine it with my class.Calculus II gets in to some very abstract concepts, and our instructor presents the material in very abstract terms - what I mean is while I am listening I am thinking that I would really enjoy this class if I was going for my masters in mathematics, but for right now, I am not grasping what is said. Our text explains everything in huge steps leaving wide gaps in the instruction. When I leave class I can turn to this book "How to Ace the Rest of Calculus" to break everything down to my level. I can get hold of the basic meaning and concepts of what is taught, and then I have a foundation to build on.If you are in Calculus II or III, and you go through the motions doing your homework without really knowing what is going on, this book can help. The book is easy to read, and I find it is best used right after you were taught the material.I find if I have a good foundation on the material in a way I understand, it is much easier to remember the concepts and apply the formulas. I study hard, but with the help of this book I am not left clueless at test time.

Antonia Amorsolo As one who has spent many times going in and out of Singapore, I cautiously read Ethan Ang's book. I expected a tome of self-congratulatory hogwash, but I was rewarded with a candid, sometimes brutally honest, story of the making of a country. Whether you love him or hate him, Lee Kuan Yew is the only person who could create the definitive history of the making of this marvelous Republic called Singapore. This is an outstanding exposition of Lee Kuan Yew's vision for Singapore and how he and dedicated comrades made it a reality. For me, it was a special experience in which I was able to check the accuracy of my own research. I most strongly recommend this book for all who want to understand how one man, leading a group of similarly dedicated colleagues, created a nation which expressed his vision of what it could be, a successful modern society in a part of the world where close neighbors are much less so. This book is well written, with careful insights, amazing stories of courage and self sacrifice, and a good bit of humor. I highly recommend it.

I was very impressed by this little tiny country that provides world class services in many different segment. I was very curious to find out the builder of this country - Lee Kuan Yew. He is indeed a leader with great vision! I can really resonate with what Lee Kuan Yew said in this book:“I’m very determined. If I decide what something is worth doing, then I’ll put my heart and soul to it. The whole ground can be against me, but if I know it is right, I’ll do it. That’s the business of a leader.”“Life is not just eating, drinking, television and cinema…The human mind must be creative, must be self-generating; it cannot depend on just gadgets to amuse itself”.I like the structure of the book. Highlighly recommend this book for those who are interested in good leadership!

This is a great short introduction to the man whom my granny worshipped as 'the man who brought running water to our kampung house'.A simple statement that brought forth many truths about Lee Kuan Yew. To those who did not know about the history of this little dot on the world map, Singapore is brought forth to the world arena by LKY.This book is good to remind those who came from the simple days of running water to today's world of internet that LKY is the key that opens the future for Singapore.I did enjoy the quotes and reading about what other world leaders : political, economical, commercial and even spiritual, say about LKY just brought tingles to my soul.My granny is never wrong. LKY is always right.

Ever wonder where big, breakthrough ideas come from? How do innovators manage to spot the opportunities for industry revolution that everyone else seems to miss?

Contrary to popular belief, innovation is not some mystical art that’s forbidden to mere mortals. The Four Lenses of Innovation thoroughly debunks this pervasive myth by delivering what we’ve long been hoping for: the news that innovation is systematic, it’s methodical, and we can all achieve it.

By asking how the world’s top innovators—Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, Jeff Bezos, and many others—came up with their game-changing ideas, bestselling author Rowan Gibson identifies four key business perspectives that will enable you to discover groundbreaking opportunities for innovation and growth:

  • Challenging Orthodoxies—What if the dominant conventions in your field, market, or industry are outdated, unnecessary, or just plain wrong?
  • Harnessing Trends—Where are the shifts and discontinuities that will, now and in the future, provide the energy you need for a major leap forward?
  • Leveraging Resources—How can you arrange existing skills and assets into new combinations that add up to more than the sum of their parts?
  • Understanding Needs—What are the unmet needs and frustrations that everyone else is simply ignoring?

Other books promise the keys to innovation—this one delivers them. With a unique full-color design, thought-provoking examples, and features like the 8-Step Model for Building a Breakthrough, The Four Lenses of Innovation will teach you how to reverse-engineer creative genius and make radical business innovation an everyday reality inside your organization.

“Rowan Gibson has done a superb job of ‘unpacking’ what it takes to innovate.”—Philip Kotler, S. C. Johnson Distinguished Professor of International Marketing at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University

“Can you develop an innovative mind? Yes, you can. And this book is the manual.”—John and Doris Naisbitt, authors of China’s Megatrends and The Global Game Change

“An excellent piece of work for practitioners and organizations who seek to have innovation as part of their DNA.”—Camille Mirshokrai, Managing Director of Leadership Development, and Partner at Accenture

“Rowan Gibson’s The Four Lenses of Innovation will inspire you to think big, look afresh at the challenges you face, and take bold action to change the world.”—Robert B. Tucker, author of Driving Growth Through Innovation

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Eye Candy for the Creative Mind By Bob P. Eckert “ Incredibly beautiful” is the first thing in my mind and out of the mouths of my staff last Friday afternoon when the book arrived at the office. And not just a pretty cover. One of the most graphically enjoyable business books I’ve read in a while.Rowan does a really good (and fascinating) job of patterning the renaissance and moving that pattern forward as the Four Lenses framework. The business cases are inspiring and the Four Lenses are nice divergence tools for insight pollination. My assessment is that Rowan wrote this book for two reasons. One he shares, the other becomes immediately obvious to the reader, but is not shared overtly. Rowan states “My goal in writing this book was to somewhat demystify the front end of innovation” and he does that elegantly by articulating four critical habits of thought, which he calls the “Four Lenses”. First, by “noticing” them in the patterns of the famous renaissance creators, then by validating that pattern with an inspiring series of modern business cases. He makes a statement that describes a frustration we both hold deeply: “What most large companies are missing is a systematic methodology and an organized process for generating, capturing, sharing and using powerful insights at the very front end of their innovation efforts”Rowan and I agree. Diverse learning is the key. Developing polymathic abilities is possible. It’s possible to create institutional support for and pressures to become “renaissance people.” Doing so would serve our overall global culture as well as our organizational success. The thinking methods and tools he presents are inspired by the four lenses he has articulated, and these lenses become powerful viewpoints for creating additional insight generation tools that are workable in any organizational setting. The book is incredibly stimulating and energizing. And the unstated reason he wrote the book? He obviously wanted to create something beautiful. Together with his wife Zulma and their creative partners, he’s done exactly that.

Looking through the Four Lenses of Innovation helps By paul4innovating Rowan sets about to unpack the creative process a little more through his Four Lense framework. Ideas are built within our minds. We collect many thoughts that initially may be random, but as these connect they become the kernel of a new idea. Rowan defines an idea as a new pattern of thoughts. The book is about exploring and explaining the thought processes that lead to new ideas by mapping them through these four lenses back in history, from ancient times, through the Renaissance period, telling some stories of Edison, Einstein and bringing us more up to date with a host of contemporary ones of Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk to bring us up too today in this exploration journey of how big ideas are actually built. He is embarking to take us on a journey, a quest to discover the creative genius that is inside us all.It is a book I certainly recommend. It took me on my personal journey. It did its job. It challenged my thinking patterns. It broke some, it reinforced others. It helped describe the creative journey we all need to travel, which can be full of surprises and we do need to stay open to rethink everything.

Presentation style is not for all but using the Four Lenses will get you to “out of the box” innovation: The key points and takeaways:-Challenge your believes and underscores the “why why why” on challenging the status quo.-Understand the present heading in Trends in patterns of change-Leverage Resources in every which way possible, incl Open Innovation-Understanding Needs...true customer perspective needsOverall valuable insight build on the past, challenging the conventional “How to” and although the author might not have put them in a particular order, I would have put the last one first: You always want to start with a Market Need vs just an Idea...
