Eyes of innocents are opened to a world they never suspected By Leapin' Literary Lurkers I continue to be enchanted by Balzac's observation of life and his fantastically detailed scene-setting. This book is part of his masterful La Comedie Humaine and destined to be one of my favorites.Starting with the rigid, religious upbringing of two sisters whose every youthful inclination is damped down by an odious mother, the reader follows these innocents as they marry and are exposed to a social milieu of which they never dreamed, much less encountered.Portraits of conniving women, duplicitous men and general all-round scheming are part of the plot; we watch as one sister embarks on a self-destructive flirtation with a somewhat pretentious "bad-boy" character. People's feelings, motivations and feelings are examined under a microscope and presented for the reader's edification. We witness women's manipulations, subterfuge, revenge, shallow relationships and coquetry. We see characters being set up for a fall as they get drawn farther into the web of play-acting and deceit. The characters are described with remarkable insight. One of my favorite quotes seemed to sum up the story's intent: "A violent and successful passion takes a great deal of space in an ordinary life."

Perhaps a little heavy handed on the moralizing, which however was part of books that sold well in that era. Worth reading for the working out of the downfalls of ordinary weak persons.

Ebook PDF Online The Beginners Guide to Rainwater Harvesting: Start harvesting water and become self-sustaining today!, by T.K. Oliver

This book contains proven steps and strategies on how to safely harvest and use the rainwater that would otherwise simply go into a storm water channel and back out to sea. This will not only save on the cost of your water rates; it will help the environment as the demand on public water resources will not be so great. In times of drought when water levels are falling, every little bit counts. If everyone harvested rainwater there would be less likelihood of other water resources failing, and less need for water restrictions during times of drought. In addition, when you have your own water supply, you become much more self sufficient, and can ensure that the water you drink and bathe in is free from poisonous chemicals and bacteria. And of course, anyone who has tasted pure rainwater without the addition of chlorine will never want to drink anything else. This book contains everything you need to know about how to set up your own collection system, what kind of tanks to use, and what you will need for guttering, downspouts, filters and pumps. It will guide you through the maze of information that is out there and make collecting your own rainwater much simpler. Once you have your own water supply you will find greater enjoyment in growing your own garden, knowing that any restrictions on watering the garden will not apply to you. You will also find a chapter of handy water-saving tips to ensure that you don’t run out of water. This will be essential if you decide to use only your own rainwater all the time.

It covers the reasons to harvest rainwater, the precautions to take and some helpful water saving tips. It would have been helpful if the author included some photos to give a better idea of the kinds of tanks to use, their placement in the yard, etc. Other than that, is is an informative and well written guide.

25 of 25 people found the following review helpful. "It is never the believer who is afraid." By E. A Solinas The world of G.K. Chesterton is a strange one -- there are sensible explanations for everything, but they aren't always ones that mere humans can understand. And his novella "The Trees of Pride" is all about the people who intentionally blind themselves to the possibitilies of the world around them.Squire Vane is one of those men who doesn't believe in much of anything, and he definitely doesn't believe any of the stories about his "peacock trees" (which the locals claim spread disease and eat people). But when an American poet, a Cornish poet and a lawyer visit the squire and his daughter Barbara, the peacock trees become the favorite topic. When a comment infuriates Squire Vane, he storms off to go down to the trees during the night... and vanishes without a trace. Is he dead? Is he somehow alive? The three guests and the local doctor begin investigating the garden, and uncover the possibility that the squire was murdered -- but of course, things aren't that simple.Like most of G.K. Chesterton's stories, "The Trees of Pride" is based on devoutly Christian philosophy ("Squire, if there were a legend of hay fever, you would not believe in hay fever"). He explores the folds of human nature, in particular our willingness to believe in the supernatural, and how essential it is to the human soul. But despite its Christian bones, this novella is wrapped in a glorious pagan wildness from the ancient shores of Cornwall ("the dance of the green summer leaves was repeated beyond in the dance of the green summer sea"). His writing is vivid and lush ("Little clouds curled like feathers"), and that writing sways you into seeing the supernatural everywhere even if it isn't there. The characters are pretty solid -- they're somber and serious compared to most of Chesterton's other characters, but Barbara, Ashe, Trevayne and Paynter are fairly likable characters in their own way. The doctor is an enigma, and Vane is one of those pompous old guys who think they know everything. The one downside: the ending. It's not a bad ending, but it's so... abrupt. I would have liked to hear what the various characters thought afterwards.Chesterton combines lushly haunting writing and the philosophy of belief in "The Trees of Pride," a beautiful little book that deserves appreciation.

One Of Two Mysteries Solved By propertius Anglo-Saxon myths, a curious butler, a magical well, perambulating voracious trees, a too helpful doctor, a very country squire and a murder. This bit of fluff is a marvelous example of how Chesterton can use the literary tools available to him in order to press his case concerning realism and faith. There is no question that for the contemporary reader the last section of the book may prove too cloying in the resolution of the mystery but if you are a fan of English mysteries this will not present too much of a problem. It will grow on you and does present many of the literary conceits so popular in Chesterton.s time. Naturally I do not want to spoil the ending but there is much in this story that is reminiscent of some of Henry James' works. I leave it to the individual to make his own connections.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Humble people need to read this! By KenW Very interesting book, with a message inside the story! Can't say more, or I could spoil it for the reader. The one disadvantage I had was with the English language from Chesterton's time. Remarkable how the vocabulary of today is so inferior to the English of yesteryear.

“This is a loving and necessary book about our future: a possible world of connections with the earth, with the spirit, with the food we eat, and among human beings. Black’s sensitive interviews, her narrators’ creative lives, and the eloquent photographs are one powerful message of hope.” —Alessandro Portelli, author of They Say in Harlan County: An Oral History

For two and a half years, Katherine J. Black crisscrossed Kentucky, interviewing home vegetable gardeners from a rich variety of backgrounds. Row by Row: Talking with Kentucky Gardeners is the result, a powerful compilation of testimonies on the connections between land, people, culture, and home. The people profiled here share a Kentucky backdrop, but their life stories, as well as their gardens, have as many colors, shapes, and tastes as heirloom tomatoes do. Black interviewed those who grow in city backyards, who carve out gardens from farmland, and who have sprawling plots in creek bottoms and former pastures. Many of the gardeners in Row by Row speak eloquently about our industrialized food system’s injuries to the land, water, and health of people. But more often they talk about what they are doing in their gardens to reverse this course. Row by Row is as sure to appeal to historians, food studies scholars, and sustainability advocates as it is to gardeners and local food enthusiasts. These eloquent portraits, drawn from oral histories and supplemented by Deirdre Scaggs’ color photographs, form a meditation on how gardeners make sense of their lives through what they grow and how they grow it.

Review “Black’s commitment to listening to the oral histories cuts through the romanticism of much garden writing and the polarizing language that can afflict our food conversations in the United States.” —Elizabeth S. D. Engelhardt, author of A Mess of Greens: Southern Gender and Southern Food and lead author of Republic of Barbecue: Stories beyond the Brisket“Kate Black’s tender portraits of Kentucky gardeners read like good visits with future friends. Although these compelling Kentuckians’ backgrounds and ancestries vary widely, they have in common their striking commitment to growing their own food. Why do they garden? Their answers make each story rich and satisfying.” —Rona Roberts, host of the Savoring Kentucky blog and author of Classic Kentucky Meals“Diversity throughout the book highlights our collective connection to food, land and the human experience.… Each tale is just intimate enough for the reader to feel a connection to the gardener, but brief enough to anticipate the next.… Row by Row evolves into a gardening manual, without giving a single instruction. Within the stories are secrets and inspirations that readers can apply to their own gardens, even if they’re digging for the first time.” —LEO Weekly

The White Linen Nurse was so tired that her noble expression ached. Incidentally her head ached and her shoulders ached and her lungs ached and the ankle-bones of both feet ached quite excruciatingly. But nothing of her felt permanently incapacitated except her noble expression. Like a strip of lip-colored lead suspended from her poor little nose by two tugging wire-gray wrinkles her persistently conscientious sickroom smile seemed to be whanging aimlessly against her front teeth. The sensation certainly was very unpleasant. Looking back thus on the three spine-curving, chest-cramping, foot-twinging, ether-scented years of her hospital training, it dawned on the White Linen Nurse very suddenly that nothing of her ever had felt permanently incapacitated except her noble expression!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Don't be bumptious! By R. Barr Written around the turn of last century, it still spoke to me in a delightfully refreshing way. Standards and expectations were different in that era but, especially for those of us who experienced some of those changes or were subsequently affected by them, these show the first glimmers of why some of the changes (in ways women were treated or how the medical staff team dynamics needed some adjusting) were needed. However it is the sense of humor and heart the writer conveys that so delighted me. Delightful is just the descriptive that seems to fit.Plot revolves around a graduating trained nurse who, though very ably transformed into an automaton of efficiency, is lamenting her lack of individuality and vitality. When she comes into a very different line of work, caring for an irritable invalid girl and her even more irascible surgeon father, this could degenerate into a trite romance but is saved by it's sense of humor and pithy insights. Also enjoyable are the colorful period language and expressions and view into the worldview and customs of the era. They somehow find their way into my thinking, causing me to look at my own era and perspective, though in no part the possible intention of the writer - it was meant, I believe, as a happy jaunt through its own, contemporary, time and place. But its worth the side trip for a reader a hundred and ten years, or more, later...
