It is set five years after Seven Little Australians, so Meg is 21 and all the other children also five years older. Once again there are seven children, as Captain Woolcot and Esther have had a daughter, now referred to as Baby, but actually Esther (Essie), who is almost 3. Pip is at University, Meg is stepping out with Alan Courtney who is a newly qualified doctor, Nellie is 15 and impatient to be allowed more. Bunty is at school where he is called John, the former Baby (Winifred) is now called Poppet and The General, now 6, is called Peter or sometimes Rupert. Meg gets engaged, Pip almost gets engaged, Nellie succumbs to the flattery of unsuitable neighbours, Bunty runs away and the Captain and Esther go to India. This book was written in 1895 when standing in society was very important and a self-made man was held in contempt by the gentility, something that seems quite foreign in today's Australia. This was a time when people used ink bottles, wrote letters and occasionally sent telegrams, travelled abroad by ship, to town by train and almost everywhere else on foot; people darned clothing and hosiery, boys ran away to sea as cabin boys, and Scarlet Fever was often fatal. There seemed to be quite a lot of snobbery at this time: the nouveau riche neighbours were avoided, referred to as "impossible", and described as homely, uneducated, vulgar and pretentious. The lesson Turner conveys seems to be that association with the lower classes can lead to catching a potentially fatal communicable disease. Poppet is the stand-out favourite from my point of view. Not as good as the first in the series, but still enjoyable and imformative.

Luis Augusto Weir

Luis Augusto Weir is an Oracle Ace director and a principal architect for HCL technologies. With several years of experience implementing IT solutions across the globe, he has successfully delivered several large and complex Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and API solutions for Fortune 500 companies. He has led SOA and other middleware capabilities for different renowned SIs, such as CSC, Cognizant, and Capgemini. He is currently focusing on creating digital solutions and strategies to key global HCL customers and helps them adopt and realize the full benefits that technologies, such as APIs, mobile frameworks, cloud integration platforms, and IoT, can bring to the business. Having had a natural talent for software, computers, and engineering in general, Luis' career in software started from an early age. I liked it because it firstly provided enough context and educational information on what an API and API management actually is. It also explained it's relation to SOA. It then provided a really good case study with plenty of examples. It then went on to show using real samples how and why to implement the different products of the suite.

An early social comedy by Shaw on the horrors of war By Lawrance Bernabo George Bernard Shaw takes the title for this play from the opening life of Virgil's epic poem the "Aeneid," which begins "Of arms and the man I sing." Virgil glorified war and the heroic feats of Aeneas on the battlefield. However, Shaw's purpose in this play is to attack the romantic notion of war by presenting a more realistic depiction of war, devoid of the idea that such death and destruction speaks to nobility. Still, "Arms and the Man" is not an anti-war drama, but rather a satirical assault on those who would glorify the horrors or war.Shaw develops an ironic contrast between two central characters. The play begins with accounts of the glorious exploits of Major Sergius Saranoff, a handsome young Bulgarian officer, in a daring cavalry raid, which turned the war in favor of the Bulgarians over the Serbs. In contrast, Captain Bluntschil, a professional soldier from Switzerland, acts like a coward. He climbs up to a balcony to escape capture, he threatens a woman with a gun, and he carries chocolates rather than cartridges because he claims the sweets are more useful on the battlefield.In the eyes of Raina Petkoff, the young romantic idealist who has bought into the stories of battlefield heroism, Saranoff is her ideal hero. However, as the play proceeds, we learn more about this raid and that despite its success, it was a suicidal gesture that should have failed. Eventually Saranoff is going to end up dead if he continues to engage in such ridiculous heroics. Meanwhile, we realize that Bluntshcil has no misconceptions about the stupidity of war and that his actions have kept him alive."Arms and the Man" is an early play by Shaw, first performed in 1894, the same year he wrote "Mrs. Warren's Profession." The ending is rather tradition for comedies of the time, with all the confusion between the lovers finally getting cleared up and everybody paired up to live happily ever after. The choice of a young woman as the main character, who ultimately rejects her romantic ideals to live in the real world, is perhaps significant because serving in the army and going to war is not going to happen. Consequently, her views are not going to be colored by questions of courage in terms of going to war herself. I also find it interesting that this play understands the horrors of war given that it was the horrors of World War I that generally killed the romantic notion of war in Britain.

By A Customer This play particularly wins you over if you see it performed live with a particularly acerbic, not too tall Bluntschli--it is a romantic farce that critiques Romanticism (but ends up in love with it, although in a roundabout way) and embraces early 20th c Realism and Capitalism, all through some fairly simple but very captivating characters. Good social sendup, a Shaw for people who still have soft hearts and want a quick read.

Like the chocolate cream soldier - tasty and satisfying By Bonnie A starving, exhausted soldier running for his life bursts into a young woman's room, finds outrage, criticism, solace, chocolate creams, and unexpected love -and that's just the opening scene. This clever, witty, subtle, and surprising treat from the author of Pygmalion still holds up well more than 100 years after its writing. Shaw fashions the subjects of false ideals, heroism, romanticism, and the fake glories of war into a well-constructed farce which sustains through the very last line. Can't wait to see a new production of the play, and a great read meanwhile....

RONAN'S WELL produces many hits, SAINT RONAN'S WELL very few. END NOTE.Sir Walter Scott wrote a famous Introduction to his 1823 novel SAINT RONAN'S WELL. In it he describes the novel as "light literature." It follows "a plan different from any other that the Author has ever written."What is so different? SAINT RONAN'S WELL is not historical in the way IVANHOE, QUENTIN DURWARD and even WAVERLEY are. These are historical in that Scott, father of the historical novel genre, had to rely entirely on reading and research for the romances farthest back in time, while for the more recent settings prior to SAINT RONAN'S WELL he could flesh out printed records with boyhood recollections of tales told him by very old men who had been active in the "risings" of 1715 and 1745.SAINT RONAN'S WELL, by contrast, is set in Scott's own lifetime and draws on his own experiences at many country inns in Scotland and at some spas built around healing waters. The place is southern Scotland at a reasonably fashionable hotel very recently built thanks to the interest of an officious Lady in its nearby healing waters associated with Saint Ronan in former Roman Catholic days.The plot is driven by two marriages a third of a century earlier by a titled Englishman, one in France, not publicized, to a titled Frenchwoman, a second later in England to a titled Englishwoman. Both unions produced sons. Both marriages ended with the death of the husband. In other words the second marriage was bigamous and its offspring illegitimate.Trouble is that the second son inherited his father's title. As life ended, the father regretted his deception and sent the first son, Francis (Frank) Tyrrel, proof of his legitmacy. Both Frank and half-brother, Valentine Bulmer, Lord Etherington, arrive in the vicinity of Saint Ronan's village, spa and waters with their eyes out for nubile (or is she?) Miss Clara Mowbray, the ward of her impoverished noble, hothead brother John.Does one brother get the girl? Does the Earl keep his title? The tale is avoidably tragic and I will reveal no spoilers. There are many comic characters and interludes, an absent-minded, vastly learned but kindly Presbyterian minister, a domestic spy close to Lord Etherington, a canny, unforgettable innkeeper, Meg Dods, and a cast of silly men and women who frequent the new hotel associated with the healing waters.Keep your eye on Mr Touchwood, an immensely wealthy nabob who had once met and befriended Frank Tyrrel in Smyrna (Turkey). Several people's hells are paved with Touchwood's good intentions. -OOO-

Like The Bride of Lammermoor, in the end of this book Scott tends toward the melodramatic, which I'm not a fan of.

About the Author Carolyn Wells, June 18, 1862 - March 26, 1942 was an American writer and poet. She was best known for her books of poetry and humor until around 1910 she read one of Anna Katherine Green’s mysteries and took up the genre. Many of her mysteries featured the detective Fleming Stone. She was married to Hadwin Houghton, heir to the Houghton-Mifflin publishing company. She was a collector of poetry by other authors, and, upon her death, she bequeathed her collection of the works of Walt Witman to the Library of Congress.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Interesting Mystery By drkhimxz A vintage work by the prolific Carolyn Wells, this is a quite readable puzzler. It is an example of what I would call, non-violent murder mysteries, such as written by Agatha Christie, Essentially what we get is an early build-up, the murder, and the rest is a matter of Who Dun It and Where is the leading Suspect. The language and sentiments are sometimes what some would term dated, but I did not have any problem about that. There are a number of well-drawn characters and a super-sleuth (with a youthful protege, who makes major contributions to the investigation). While crucial to the solution, the super-sleuth plays a surprisingly small part in the book. The writing is clear, the plot line tricky but not complicated, the momentum nicely maintained. I would commend this to youthful readers who are not put off by the age of the book and to most adults who take to the "cozy" sub-genre.

But there's no real mystery here, and the characters are cardboard. And as usual in the Stone mysteries, the "lower class" Fibsy does most of the sleuthing, but is treated as a mere underling.

Or really, for anyone who would like to dream big, defeat negativity and overcome impossible obstacles.McCarthy's advice is clear, logical and compassionate. Best yet, it's effective. Whether you want to increase your bank account, improve any area of your business, create better relationships, or simply build and generate a better life, in whatever area, May McCarthy shows you how to do it, in this easy-to-follow seven step process. The process works! I have seen it manifest in the lives of others and in my own life as well. This is an easy-read, following tried and true principles that have been packaged in a unique way which most anyone can reproduce. As always, this is not magic. You have to do the work. I was quite impressed as to how such a successful lady wants to share her secrets to a life of abundance. I have placed into action her suggestions and it not only has worked for me but how fast it has provided me such positive changes in my life. The subtitle says it all: The Debunking of Pseudoscience By Cm Dfms Brown This is the latest in a series of popular science books by this erudite but accessible author. I have enjoyed many of his previous books and this one keeps up the standards set in Discarded Science, Corrupted Science and so on. We need authors like Grant to remind us that rushing to embrace "proof" of the inexplicable is often the lazy way out ... His books remind us of the need to remain sceptical.

Hilarious deunking of the "Paranormal" By John Grove An excellent, informative and hilarious book debunking the complete idiocy of those who defend the in-defensible. Shows you the tricks of the charlatans, the unfalsifiable nature of these beliefs and why science rejects them.A short excellent read.
