A heartwarming and irresistible story of the profound bond between a deer named Dillie and the veterinarian who saved her life. In the summer of 2004, veterinarian, Melanie Butera, received an unexpected patient: a three-day-old, blind, dying fawn she called Dillie. Melanie doubted the deer would survive, but with the help of her husband Steve she miraculously nursed Dillie back to health. The tenacious deer quickly became a member of the family running around the house with the dog, the cat, and the people; and enjoying all of the perks including her own bedroom, plates of her favorite linguini, and swims in the family’s pool. Mischievous and funny, Dillie opens cabinets, learns to climb stairs, turns the lights on and off, steals food, and showers her family with affection. Melanie and Steve gave Dillie a chance at life, and in return she has enriched theirs beyond measure. And when Melanie is diagnosed with cancer, the veterinarian who saved the life of a fawn is herself saved by the unconditional love of Dillie the deer. This heartwarming book is filled with insights about the animal world and the powerful bond between humans and the non-human creatures who love them.

Sometimes a blind-as-a-bat baby deer jumps through that window and sleeps in a bed in your house. Veterinarian Melanie Butera rescued Dillie, a blind baby deer. That deer now lives in her home. (Yep, there's a live webcam viewed by millions). And then Melanie develops cancer, and Dillie The Deer guides Mel to see all life in a fascinating, hilarious, heartbreaking -- hopeful new way. This book is THE story we all need. Butera writes with a humor reminiscent of Erma Bombeck and Nora Ephron. I love Butera's honest, compassionate, generous, true tales. This book is life at its best.

"[...]existed between domestic races and species, this source of doubt could not so perpetually recur. It has often been stated that domestic races do not differ from each other in characters of generic value. I think it could be shown that this statement is hardly correct; but naturalists differ widely in determining what characters are of generic value; all such valuations being at present empirical. Moreover, on the view of the origin of genera which I shall presently give, we have no right to expect often to meet with generic differences in our domesticated productions.[...]".

BEWARE the copy with intro by Comfort By Caraleisa The original book by Charles Darwin is a classic that should be on everyone's reading list. There are ample reviews here which address it, praise it, and I am completely in agreement with them. Darwin's Origin of Species is a true masterpiece.Unfortunately, this review is to help readers/buyers realize that there is a 'vandalized' version which has been published, and to tell you how to avoid it and get the real thing. To explain; there is yet another edition also called "The Origin of Species, 150th Anniversary Edition", put out by Christian Fundamentalist Ray Comfort in an attempt to discredit evolutionary theory and Charles Darwin, and it has some extra 50 pages of unintelligible drivel about creationism, as well as having ABRIDGED Darwin's original text. If you want to read about creationism, find another book... if you want the facts, read ALL of what Darwin has to say, and please don't give any money to Comfort by accidentally buying his ABRIDGED version.Note that he used the EXACT same name as the 'real' anniversary edition -- "The Origin Of Species: 150th Anniversary Edition by Charles Darwin". You can easily tell which version you're getting by who wrote the introduction - go with Julian Huxley, NOT Ray Comfort, and you'll have the correct and complete version. Also, note that Amazon reviews are mixed between the books (normally not a problem at all) - I hope they are straightening this out, but currently that's not the case. Sadly, the negative reviews of the Comfort version are bringing down the rating of the 'good/real' book.Sorry to have to write about the 'drama', but I'm sure you want to know that you have ordered the correct book, and I know you'll love it.Enjoy.

This is the sixth edition of the Origin of Species By John Salerno My four-star rating is more for this particular product than for the work of Darwin itself. Clearly Darwin's book is the cornerstone of modern biology, and I won't even pretend to try to rate its importance using one to five stars. However, I felt it was important to let people know that this is the *sixth* edition of the book. I ordered it thinking it was the first, although I admit I had no reason to believe that other than that it did not specify that it was any other edition. The main problem with later editions is that Darwin continually responded to his critics in subsequent editions, thus changing some aspects of his theory. He also added the obnoxious concession "by the Creator" to his beautiful final sentence in order to appease the religious critics. The sixth (final) edition even has an extra chapter in response to criticisms by Catholic biologist George Mivart (which chapter is present in this edition, thus proving it is the sixth edition). The benefit to later editions would be that they contain minor corrections to the writing, as well as these answers to objections and criticism, but at the same time I don't feel that Darwin's answers needed to be added to the book itself. "The Origin" should simply present his theory (as the first edition does) and he could easily have answered his critics in other ways and not by editing the actual theory itself. But to reiterate my main point, I am not reviewing the actual work of Darwin. I am posting this review to inform people of which edition they are getting with this particular book, because I wish I had known in advance.Edit: I should add that the copy I received did not have the same cover as what is displayed here. My copy shows a bird, a wildcat, and a dolphin on the cover. The cover shown on the product page at the time of writing is of a ship. However, my copy is still the 150th Anniversary Edition (Signet Classics) with an introduction by Julian Huxley.

A Sham - Half the number of pages as the legitimate version, critical content omitted By Mitch Scott I have to admit, I'm astonished by the ease with which one can be fooled into thinking they've procured the full and legitimate content of Darwin's signature work. A couple of easy clues, though:Darwin refers in this version to a diagram in chapter IV, to illustrate "The Probable Effects of the Process of Natural Selection Through Divergence of Character and Extinction, On the Descendants of a Common Ancestor." This diagram is absent in this version, and this absence is what started me on the road to identifying this version as a fraud. I began to search for other editions of "Origins" to see if they included the diagram. And that search found not only that most versions did contain the diagram, but that the full text of this work ran to over 550 pages - twice as many as are included in this version.I should also have known better than to have procured a free version. You truly do get what you pay for.Be aware, as you look for a reliable version of the work, that there are many fraudulent versions out there. I won't go into detail on this, as this review concerns this specific version. But I can say that I've purchased a version that I am satisfied is a faithful rendering of the complete content. The ISBN number is 978-0-451-52906-0. It's the 150th anniversary edition, with an introduction by Julian Huxley. Still, don't take my word for it, and do your own due diligence. There is another "150th anniversary" version with an introduction by Ray Comfort, who is a Christian prothselitizer. So be careful.Hopefully this will prevent you from having to start reading the work again from the beginning, as I've had to do. But I'm glad to have figured it out and separated fact from fiction.

Snakes of the Southeast (Wormsloe Foundation Nature Book Ser.), by Whit Gibbons, Mike Dorcas

Review

Clearly written, cleanly designed, and fun to use, [Snakes of the Southeast] is a guide that will promote a better understanding of the habitat needs of, and environmental challenges to, snakes.

(Bob Edmonds McCormick Messenger)

The Southeast is especially ripe for a book that places snakes in a context that can help catalyze a change in attitudes toward these badly maligned animals. This profusely illustrated book is a big step in the right direction. . . . The information presented here is detailed yet presented in an easy-to-understand format. This is a worthy and valuable addition to the natural history literature of the Southeast. This book should be carried by anyone going into any natural area of the Southeast. It should be kept on hand even in urban and other areas where snakes could turn up.

(Copeia)

Small, medium, large, water, and venomous snakes are included as well as backyard snakes, pets, attitudes about them, and conservation.

(SciTech Book News)

This is the most comprehensive educational guide to the snakes of the southeastern United States. Clearly written, well designed, and fun to use, the guide will promote better understanding of the habitat needs of, and the environmental challenges to, this fascinating group of animals.

(Center for North American Herpetology)

A treasure to anyone having an interest in becoming a herpetologist . . . The photographs will attract every herpetologist, as they are fit in perfect context, and mostly never seen in publications before. Certainly the price will make it highly affordable for both the novice and professional herpetologist.

(Bulletin of the Maryland Herpetological Society)

Easy to read . . . An informative book for the general public aimed at educating those with a limited knowledge of snakes.

(Southeastern Naturalist)

Makes an eloquent case for the environmental importance of these slithery denizens of field, forest, swamp and backyard . . . The poisonous snakes evoke the most interest, of course, and the authors do a good job of debunking the many lurid myths that enshroud these vipers.

(Mobile Register)

A storehouse of easily digested information.

(Athens Banner-Herald)

Most species are illustrated with white background shots, several beautiful natural settings and held by a human (which is valuable for scale). In many cases juvenile and adult specimens are included. The authors accompany these delightful pictures with two to four pages of clear and comprehensive information about each snake (including identification checklist and both continental US and Southeast range maps). The authors stick in some interesting and amusing observations in sidebars. If you have the 2005 edition, my guess is you won't find it worthwhile to upgrade. This book does add the newly discovered (2012) Kirtland's Snake, but it has been found only in one small area of northern Kentucky (it is much more common in Ohio and Indiana). Oddly enough, both books claim 53 snakes (you can get anywhere from 51 to 56 depending on how you count, but whatever method you use, the new edition has one more snake). The Eastern Garter Snake has been replaced by the closely-related Common Gartersnake, although I think two of the pictures are actually Easterns, and some of the description applies better to Easterns as well. The list for further reading has been only slightly updated, despite some excellent candidate books in the last ten years.I could wish for a few improvements. The index covers only snake names (both common and scientific) so you cannot look up a topic, or even look up a snake by a common name other than the one chosen by the authors. There is no identification hierarchy or checklist that would allow you to identify a snake seen in the wild or in a picture. You have to guess the snake, look it up, and see if it matches the identification attributes listed. All measurements are in English units, I prefer metric in scientific books. But these are minor gripes in a book that manages to be beautiful, clear, interesting, precise and accurate.

FIVE on a "scale" of one to five By Zippergirl The somewhat reclusive stars of this glossy full-color guide, “Snakes of the Southeast,” are sleek and attractive with serious animal magnetism, and unusual appetites. [Plot Spoiler] The villains are just deeply misunderstood. Watch for cameos by heavies from Africa, Latin America and the Indian sub-continent.The authors have set out to cure Ophidiophobia, one glossy page at a time. The southeastern states of the US have more than fifty native species of snakes; more than twenty are bright gems in shades of red, orange, yellow and green and easy to identify. Only a handful are venomous and you are more likely to be hit by a bolt of lightning than die from a snakebite. Or win the big lottery jackpot. That puts it in perspective, doesn't it?This gorgeous guide to snakes will encourage nature lovers, educators, parents and couch potatoes who know they really ought to get outside more often, to tread lightly and embrace the reptilian denizens of our wild and urban landscapes. (Kids already love snakes, no need to stimulate their curiosity.) “Being able to identify animals and plants is one of the first steps in developing an appreciation for nature . . . Such information is easy to learn and can greatly add to your enjoyment of nature in general and snakes in particular.” Truer words were never spoken.Species accounts aka “What Snake Is That?” include crystal clear photos, field marks, range maps and snake trivia even snake aficionados, myself included, will find remarkable. Who knew that cottonmouths, or water moccasins, were reluctant to defend themselves by biting? And how do we know this? “Investigators tested how more than fifty cottonmouths responded to being stepped on and picked up by humans.” You’ll have to read the book to see what the heck that was all about. Some startling statistics are found throughout: Those stories you’ve heard about mega-pythons proliferating in the Everglades? All true. A few years after breeding populations of non-native pythons were discovered the relative abundance of raccoons and possums dropped 99%. Formerly abundant rabbits? A big fat zero. Pythons have even been known to eat alligators. Now there’s an Instagram photo op.This book is a real find, the authors have pulled together a useful and attractive handbook on snakes for your next nature ramble, whether it’s in your backyard or deep into the subtropical habitats of the southeast. (Armchair naturalists welcome.)I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I like the fact that they say it isn’t easy and that it’s not like you don’t have to do anything about it. I am setting up business for passive income at the moment, and right now, even though it is growing, if I don’t do anything about it, it will stay at the level it’s at and won’t grow. This is a bold book by James Altucher because he not only gives you a new map for the new financial landscape, but he also has skin in the game. This is the first financial book in which the author REVEALS HOW HE, PERSONALLY, MAKES HIS OWN MONEY. We are living in an epic period of change, danger and opportunity. The economy is crashing and booming every few years. People are getting fired and replaced by computers and Chinese workers. The stock market crashes with regularity. Every "fix" from the government makes things worse. The Old World has been demolished... and people are desperate for answers. James Altucher's "The Choose Yourself Guide To Wealth" contains those answers. This is the field guide to the "New World" we live in. You can play by the old rules and get left behind, or you can use these new ideas and become wealthy. This is not a book for the faint of heart. Read at your own risk, because sometimes the truth is hard to take. But for those who are ready to hear, James provides an updated map of the new territory for generating wealth and freedom. This book is the eye-opener of the century, it is the guide to building, keeping, and investing your money and breaking free from the chains of rusted, old thinking.

Not actionable By Adam Powell I found that this book was not particularly actionable, and recycled a lot of content which Altucher has previously published online and in other books of his. Altucher tries to redefine wealth in non-monetary terms, and then speaks abstractly about how to maximize his redefined version of wealth. While it's a snappy title, I don't feel like I learned anything useful from reading it. One major flaw is that Altucher frequently uses himself as a case study, when many of his accomplishments are path-dependent on his prior accomplishments.

A Uniquely Important Book for YOU By Corky This is just the book I needed to read, because society at large has always been unrealto me, artificial, unjust, and frankly, just insane.Altucher gives you two vital things in this book, maybe three:He knows how the game of life is changing and what is coming here.He understands how to make an income more certainly to match the new changes here. While doing this he understands true service to others and how your income can andshould be tied to actual help to others which will bring you true happiness and money too.He went through very stressful & depressed times but had the guts to find the true sourcesof these things and correct them in his life to his and everyone's benefit.I applaud his sense of Ethics and Morality and how it came out great for him.He ended up with money, but not from Greed, but from caring about others. This book is a must own one, that hopefully more will read, so we have a better life for ALL.It can do the same for you.

In fact, I’ve been searching for over 15 years for a book like this. I believe it will ultimately be worth at least $1 million – possibly $10 million or more – to me by the time I’ve put it to good use.If you work in a cubicle all day, perhaps at Proctor and Gamble, and have a feeling deep in your gut that something ain’t right, that the college degree and the corporate gig that you’d been told would set you free just isn’t what it was cracked up to be, then this book is for you. Inside James provides a practical, real constructive, strategy for breaking free from the grind. To Choose Yourself. To navigate past the gate keepers and to experience a life of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual abundance. These are the exact techniques James used to create this life for himself. I highly recommend you pick up a copy.P.S. I also recommend subscribing to the James Altucher Show podcast. He does a weekly full length show, and in depth interview. In addition, he does the daily Ask Altucher show with his wife Claudia, who is also a successful entrepreneur and business owner. Great dynamic. Informitaive. Inspiring. Plus, fun and cool.

It was the first full-sized book I'd ever read. The story of Rolf and the Viking's Bow awakened in me a love for books that has remained with me all these years. The memory and impact of this book have stayed with me as well. After recounting my experience with some friends whose son was just getting interested in reading I decided to read the book again. I'm so glad I did. At my first reading it was a story of adventure for a boy looking for more than comic books could provide. Upon this reading I discovered that it was so much more. Rolf and the Viking's Bow is a story of deception, betrayal, murder, revenge and forgiveness and even a little happily ever after at the end. Highly recommend!

Huntley Terrible-quality edition that looks as if someone printed it off his home computer; tiny print; full of typos and strange gaps between text portions; weird images (just an X in a box) on random pages; not published by an actual publisher. Additionally, the writing itself is very poor and impossible to follow.

Reading between the lines in Wikipedia By Amazon Customer What a different story this book gives us than does Wikipedia's current article on Audubon! John Burroughs, himself a naturalist and an obvious admirer of Audubon, published his book in 1902 based largely on his readings of the biographers of his day and of the personal writings of Audubon. Many of the facts in Burroughs' book directly conflict with those in Wikipedia: as one early example, Burroughs has Audubon born in Louisiana in 1780, while Wikipedia places his birth in Haiti five years later. While today's research into Audubon's life may challenge the details in Burroughs' book, Burroughs makes Audubon come alive for us. We wander the woods with him, we agonize over the repeated loss of his paintings (by fire, by rodents, by poor storage), we chafe at his poor business decisions, we delight in his discovery of new birds and new painting techniques, we are distressed at his difficulties in gaining subscribers for his Birds of America.Wikipedia reports that "with his wife's support, in 1826 at age 41, Audubon took his growing collection of work to England." In Burroughs' book, we realize how very much Lucy contributed to Audubon's life and work - from her teaching him English upon his arrival in the US to her financial support of the family, her many moves across the country and long periods alone while Audubon took off on his travels, her unyielding confidence in his talent and importance of his work. One of my (many) favorite sections of the book is Burroughs' comparison of Audubon's bird pictures ("very demonstrative, even theatrical and melodramatic at times") with those of his more conservative contemporary, Alexander Wilson. This book has all the elements of art, history, romance, fashion, business, and nature - all in all, a great read. This Kindle version was downloaded from Amazon at no cost. It is well formatted, but it lacks the illustrations that may be found in the original print version.

Burroughs gathered all the facts, but found long stretches where Audubon's whereabouts were not known. Audubon had peseverence that few could match. Several times his paintings were lost and had to be redone. The way books were published back then was a far cry from today's literature. Worth reading.
