"[...]escape. A German blacksmith whom I knew well was on the train with me, and looked at me very intently, as if he thought he had seen me somewhere before in his travels. I really believe he knew me, but had no heart to betray me. At any rate, he saw me escaping and held his peace. The last point of imminent danger, and the one I dreaded most, was Wilmington. Here we left the train and took the steam-boat for Philadelphia. In making the change here I again apprehended arrest, but no one disturbed me, and I was soon on the broad and beautiful Delaware, speeding away to the Quaker City. On reaching Philadelphia in the afternoon, I inquired of a colored man how I could get on to New York. He directed me to the William-street depot, and thither I went, taking the train that night. I reached New York Tuesday morning, having completed the journey in less than twenty-four hours. My free life began on the third of September, 1838. On the morning of the fourth of that month, after an anxious and most perilous but safe journey, I found myself in the big city of New York, a FREE MAN—one more added to the mighty throng which, like the confused waves of the troubled sea, surged to and fro between the lofty walls of Broadway. Though dazzled with the wonders which met me on every hand, my thoughts could not be much withdrawn from my[...]".

Collected Articles of Frederick Douglass, by Frederick Douglass

About the Author Frederick Douglass (1818–1895) was an American social reformer, orator, writer and statesman. After escaping from slavery, he became a leader of the abolitionist movement, gaining note for his dazzling oratory and incisive antislavery writing. He stood as a living counter-example to slaveholders' arguments that slaves did not have the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. Many Northerners also found it hard to believe that such a great orator had been a slave. Douglass wrote several autobiographies, eloquently describing his life as a slave, and his struggles to be free. His first autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, was published in 1845 and was his best-known work, influential in gaining support for abolition. He wrote two more autobiographies, with his last, Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, published in 1881 and covering events through and after the Civil War. After the Civil War, Douglass remained active in the United States' struggle to reach its potential as a "land of the free". Douglass actively supported women's suffrage. Following the war, he worked on behalf of equal rights for freedmen, and held multiple public offices. Douglass was a firm believer in the equality of all people, whether black, female, Native American, or recent immigrant. He was fond of saying, "I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong."

I had chosen Frederick Douglass as one of my subjects. Since I purchased this eBook I decided to take a glance at it to see if I could find some advantage in it for my project. That was an hour ago! I can't stop reading this article of his escape from slavery. I had not expected it to be such a good read. He writes with such passion, distinction, forethought and care. This could rival any novel on the market today for excitement and suspense. It's just a wonderful story and so beautifully written. As soon as I get this paper completed I'm coming back to finish the story. I can't wait to see what happens next. . . .

One sentence in particular stood out: "The thing worse than rebellion is the thing that causes rebellion." He was a rebel with a cause, and he overcame it with dignity. Firsthand history. Highly recommended.

Fascinating Social History By MNDoc On a lark I took a social history of the US in college, and have been hooked on the topic of social history - as opposed to political history - ever since. This is one of many Balzac books that lets you see what life was like in early 19th century France. I suggest you look up La Comedie Humaine and Balzac on wikipedia and choose the order in which you want to read his books. One of his best historical novels.

Balzac needs more credit in the US By dreaming of the sun In France Balzac is given a lot of credit and is considered one of THE writers, but here in the US it's not the same and it's sad. I love his writing, and yes there is a LOT of detail but that's what makes him so great. The details are flawless, you feel transported back to the past. I love Balzac and I push him on American friends looking for a challenge.

Love and marriage, French Empire style By Karl Janssen Domestic Peace, a short story by Honoré de Balzac, was originally published in 1831 under the French title of La Paix du Ménage. It takes place in November of 1809 at the height of Napoleon's empire, a time of great splendor and decadence. Everyone who's anyone in the Parisian aristocracy is gathered at a grand ball at the home of the Comte de Gondreville. Two friends, General Montcornet (also referred to, confusingly, as Colonel) and the Baron Martial de la Roche-Hugon, an up-and-coming lawyer, are discussing a newcomer to the scene, a beautiful mystery woman of melancholy demeanor who has isolated herself in a corner of the room. Martial is immediately smitten with her, despite being engaged to the eminently lovely and wealthy young widow Madame de Vaudremont, who is also present at the party. Will he be willing to sacrifice the advantages of such a fortuitous match in order to chase after this unknown beauty? To complicate matters, Colonel Soulanges, one of Napoleon's favorite military men, also shows an interest in the mystery woman, and angrily declares he'll kill Martial if he so much as goes near her. Thus a complicated love pentagon is established, in which each player schemes to satisfy his or her own romantic and financial interests. The atmosphere Balzac creates is one in which sentimental notions of love and honor are meaningless and reputation is the only inhibition. The story never takes itself too seriously, and it's fun to watch the fortunes of the two gentlemen friends rise and fall over the course of the evening. Eventually the identity of the mystery woman is revealed, but it's not as shocking as Balzac intended. There is an enjoyable cleverness to Domestic Peace. Its twists and turns are entertaining, but in the end it feels rather insubstantial. It is, after all, just a party. What it has to say about love and marriage was much more relevant to the society in which Balzac lived than to the audience of today, and readers of the 21st century will find it far less scandalous and titillating than those of the 19th. It is a competently executed piece, but not even close to Balzac at his best. Unless you are an enthusiastic fan of Balzac's Comédie Humaine, there's no reason to go out of your way for this one.

'my diamond which you said was lost and which I have found again' By sally tarbox This short story, part of Balzac's Comedie Humaine, takes place at a ball in 1809. Two men are discussing a mysterious lady in blue who is sitting alone in a corner. Despite her coldness, she finally agrees to dance with the second man...but there is a twist at the end. Clever, but not his best.

BANNED: The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments was a children’s chemistry book written in the 1960s by Robert Brent and illustrated by Harry Lazarus, showing how to set up your own home laboratory and conduct over 200 experiments. The book is controversial, as many of the experiments contained in the book are now considered too dangerous for the general public. There are apparently only 126 copies of this book in libraries worldwide. Despite this, its known as one of the best DIY chemistry books every published. The book was a source of inspiration to David Hahn, nicknamed "the Radioactive Boy Scout" by the media, who tried to collect a sample of every chemical element and also built a model nuclear reactor (nuclear reactions however are not covered in this book), which led to the involvement of the authorities. On the other hand, it has also been the inspiration for many children who went on to get advanced degrees and productive chemical careers in industry or academia.

It seems to have gained infamy since the 1995 incident near Detroit of child chemist, David Hahn. With the release of a full scale book this month by author Ken Silverstein called 'The Radioactive Boyscout', which details this nuclear incident, the popularity of this early chemistry 'how to do it' book will only grow. The early edition is known for its 50's style simplicity where chemical wastes and pollution were never a concern to Americans, certainly not in the age of 'better living through chemistry'!!! Thoroughly interesting and full of ideas and inspiration, it is the bible for any young chemist-in-training. You will enjoy.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A real treasure By Robert Littlejohn I have not had a formal course in Chemistry since high school in 1964, so I am not completely up on modern standards of chemical laboratory procedures. I was, however, an avid amateur chemist as a teenager, in the early 1960's, and I am now a physicist by profession. I never took a college course in Chemistry because I learned enough in my own laboratory and in high school classes to test out of the college requirements.I wish I had had this book as a boy. It was available, but I did not know about it. Instead, I learned chemistry from my father's college textbooks, from a Chemcraft chemistry set, and by my own experimentation. This book, "The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments", is unique. There is nothing approaching it that is in print today. It can be used for many hours of experimentation by an amateur chemist, and if you research the various reactions described on the internet you will find many more interesting experiments you can do.It is commonly reported that this book was banned by the US government, and pulled from all school library shelves. I have not yet seen any documentation of this report, so I suspect it is an urban legend. In any case, the book is now available for free download as a .pdf file (Google it), or you can order it on a CD or DVD. As you can see, Amazon links to sellers of used copies, but they are expensive. Perhaps this review will stay up long enough that cheaper copies will become available. If you get the .pdf file, I advise that you print it out double-sided, and place it in a notebook. A color print is best, as the drawings make effective use of color.Safety is common concern, much more these days than when this book was produced. I am not one of those who thinks society is coming to an end because of excessive zeal over safety (and fear of litigation), but at the same time I think that it has often been taken too far. This book shows boys and girls doing chemistry experiments without eye or hand protection (safety goggles or rubber gloves), which are de rigeur today. So did my 1960's vintage chemistry set. In my opinion, the book by Robert Bruce Thompson, "Illustrated Guide to Home Chemistry Experiments", gives a balanced and sensible view of laboratory safety, and if you are going to use "The Golden Book" I recommend that you also get Thompson's book and refer to it for supplementary information. Thompson's book also contains sensible advice about environmentally responsible disposal of chemicals (something else we didn't worry about in the 1960's). He also gives advice about where to buy chemicals (he does not mention United Nuclear, but I have found that a good source for both equipment and chemicals).Having said that, I don't think you can do interesting experiments without working with some dangerous things. I don't think experiments with chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, strong acids and bases, etc, should be avoided because of safety concerns. If you do, you will not have very many interesting experiments left to do. These should be done under adult supervision, however, and you should research the hazards before doing anything. For example, hydrogen sulfide is very poisonous, and should be prepared only in small quantities, but at the same time it's worth knowing what the "rotten egg" smell is like (you won't be able to avoid it if you prepare some). You should work outside when making toxic gases (assuming you don't have a fume hood). The Golden Book considers strong bases (sodium hydroxide, concentrated ammonia) and hydrochloric acid to be safe enough for the amateur chemist, but not sulfuric or nitric acids. I used both of the latter in my experiments when I was a boy, in concentrated form, without any trouble, but they do require knowledge and responsibility. Actually, sodium hydroxide poses a special hazard to the eyes, and in my opinion is just as dangerous as the acids. A basic rule is that nothing in the chemistry lab should be placed in the mouth (or obviously in the eyes), and eye protection is a must. This will go a long way toward eliminating the danger of a serious accident. See Robert Bruce Thompson for other safety rules. In any case, serious chemistry requires the use of strong acids and bases. The Golden Book makes do without sulfuric and nitric acids by using sodium bisulfate in place of sulfuric acid, and making small amounts of nitric acid on the fly by heating sodium bisulfate and potassium nitrate. It is a reasonable approach for amateur experiments. Some chemicals mentioned in The Golden Book should be avoided, at least carbon tetrachloride, which is a carcinogen (this was not known back in the '60's).If you buy chemicals, you will find the warning labels are all dreadful. My bottle of laboratory sodium chloride (table salt) says that on contact with skin you should immediately flush with water for 15 minutes and get medical attention, and that if you ingest any, you must be rushed to the hospital immediately. Obviously this is overdone, and the chemical companies are just sticking standard labels on all the chemicals in a room. Obviously in other cases the warning labels are relevant. The best advice is to research your chemicals (wikipedia is a good place to begin), and act knowledgeably. In any case, it is worth mentioning that even sodium chloride, prepared for the laboratory, is not authorized for human consumption, and it's good advice not to put anything in the laboratory in your mouth. (But in some cases chemistry crosses over into cooking, and you may want to taste the product. It all depends on what you are doing and how you are doing it.)The experiments in "The Golden Book" are not a substitute for a regular high school or college chemistry course, mainly because most of them make no use of quantitative methods. But the final chapters of this book do get into quantitative methods. If you supplement "The Golden Book" with Thompson's "Illustrated Guide" you will have a solid introduction to chemistry.

Wonderful intro to chemistry and experiments By A Customer When I first read this book in 7th grade it awoke in me a deep interest and excitement about science and chemistry. It provides a straightforward, hands on guide to the science of compounds, their qualities and their interraction. Dozens of visually interesting experiments and demonstrations are set out. Explains how to set up an inexpensive but fully functional home chemistry lab, including how to make much of the equipment. Great book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. it was still a super easy read By romance fantasy book I was intrigued from his last book, Penny Stock Players. This book although was not written as a story, it was still a super easy read. Some chapters gave me great surprises at how the market works. It's not a cut and dry "do this, do that" but a great book to keep you informed. Knowledge is power and I think this book gives me a deeper insight into the market.

“We have all seen NASA’s mission control centers at moments of both triumph and tragedy. Johnson makes a significant contribution to spaceflight history by analyzing their pivotal role.”—Roger Launius, associate director for collections and curatorial affairs, National Air and Space Museum   “Addresses a critical yet neglected topic in the history of space exploration, namely the role of mission controllers on the ground, without whom little could have ever been accomplished in space.”—Paul E. Ceruzzi, author of Computing: A Concise History   “Mission control centers are where the action happens in spaceflight. This book looks at three important centers, comparing them to each other and revealing their similarities and differences.”—David Christopher Arnold, author of Spying from Space: Constructing America’s Satellite Command and Control Systems   Brave astronauts, flaring rockets, and majestic launches are only one side of the story of spaceflight. Any mission to space depends on years—if not decades—of work by thousands of dedicated individuals on the ground. These are the people whose voices offer a friendly link to Earth in the void of space, whose hands maneuver rovers across the face of planets, and whose skills guide astronauts home. This book is a long-overdue history of three major centers that have managed important missions since the dawn of the space age. In Mission Control, Michael Johnson explores the famous Johnson Space Center in Houston, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, and the European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany—each a strategically designed micro-environment responsible for the operation of spacecraft and the safety of passengers. He explains the motivations behind the location of each center and their intricate design. He shows how the robotic spaceflight missions overseen in Pasadena and Darmstadt set these centers apart from Houston, and compares the tracking networks used for different types of spacecraft. Johnson argues that the type of spacecraft and the missions they controlled—not the nations they represented—defined how the centers developed, yet these centers ended up playing vital national roles as space technology became a battleground for international power struggles in the Cold War years and even after. The most visible part of a conflict that was just as real as the wars in Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan and caused great global anxiety, mission control centers have served as symbols of national security in the public eye and pivotal links in the history of modern technology.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great book on Mission Control By M. Nagle This is a book I've been waiting for a long time. I love the US Space program but most have been on the landings, astronauts and the moon rock findings. Now great books are finally coming out about the highly technical aspect of Apollo. This book on Mission Control after Saturn V cleared the tower. Other great works like Rocket Ranch and Countdown to a Moon Launch are the construction of the launch facilities and the actual preparations of getting the Saturn V ready for launch

Very good, detailed history for three Mission Control centers By strix This book gives a detailed history of the development of ground systems at Johnson Space Center, JPL and the European Space Agency (ESA). I especially liked the description of the distinctive qualities at the multinational, multicultural ESA. However the details can be a bit dry. I think the book would have benefited from interviews with the various engineers who work at Mission Control centers around the world.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This is a great history of JSC By John This is a great history of JSC, JPL and ESA control centers. But it isn't story. There are an incredible abundance of facts, but very, very little human element.Great reference work, but to be in the top tier of space books it needs the human element.Pictures and graphical layouts of the control centers through the years would have been helpful too.
