Having repeatedly been asked by my many friends to write the history of my life as a slave, especially by some who have heard me lecture on certain portions of that ever memorable period of my life, I have, after some hesitation as to its advisability, reluctantly concluded to accede to their wishes, and now present to them a truthful sketch of my eventful life in the dark days of slavery. As these checkered scenes of my early life reflectively present themselves to my mind at my advanced state of life, I wonder how I withstood all the abuse and cruelty of these early years. Our lives are largely composed of sorrow and joy, but my cup, it seems to me, has been full to overflowing with sorrow, but God has been my strength and my salvation, and has brought me thus far in the journey of life, and in him I trust, praying that, in his good time he will take me to that heavenly home where our earthly trials will cease and where there will be no more sorrow. My story is told in a plain matter-of-fact way, and I hope my readers will overlook and excuse the defects which must necessarily abound throughout the book, owing to lack of educational advantages. Really people...The 1st 83 pages is content you can find in ANY other options trading book.Choosing strategies starts on page 83. Then each strategy gets 2-4 pages - this again is breezy, superficial material.Take the section on selling naked puts - ZERO content on how to pick a trade NOTHING. Just an explanation of why naked puts isn't as risky aspeople think. The other strategy sections are just as bad (superficial)My only guess is that the other reviewers are either paid shills or haven't read any other option trading books. This is $45 you can spend better elsewhere.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Recomended highly By David S First of all let me say that I think the book is very good on overall concepts, and secondly that I have not finished the entire book yet so I will update my review in a day or two when I finish it. I greatly enjoyed Al's discussion of technical analysis and his detailed explanation of looking for trades. I do need to point out a couple of what I consider rather serious shortcomings that I have found so far. Firstly he gives the butterfly strategy rather short shrift in only looking at a 1 strike wide butterfly. If a larger width is used then one has the opportunity to "harvest" the embedded "baby butterflies" or "unseen verticals" as well as moving the verticals around to "harvest" them or reduce risk. Unless he does it later he does not mention asymmetrical configurations either. Secondly in his discussion of short put versus long stock, he makes a very serious lapse in my opinion when he outlines the P/L at expiration of the two strategies. Although he is most certainly completely aware of this, he should have mentioned the P/L of a quick drop in the underlying and an increase in implied volatility that would probably easily triple the value of that $1.00 put he was discussing. True if you are prepared to take the stock (which you should be) then this might not be that important, but it is not a good feeling seeing a large drop in your P/L and if you are not sized correctly could be rather devastating. This is why personally I prefer some kind of exposure to long options as well as short puts for example. As this will generally give me at least "one more option" (pun intended) as to making some kind of a strategic move if I need to as my outlook on volatility or the underlying may change over time as I am frequently wrong on my initial assumptions (more than I would like for sure). I'll update this review if needed when I finish the book but overall I highly recommend Mr Sherbin's book and thank him for his contribution to the options literature. I am really enjoying the read. Having finished the book now I also have to upgrade my rating to five stars

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Al Sherbin Wants You to Become a High Probability Profitable Trader! By D. Pitcock Received Al's book in March and began putting on trades within a week of reading. Results speak loudest....24 winners versus 3 losers applying Al's concepts so far.I have benefited by hearing Al speak to small groups twice before the book publication. To use his approach, you need a trading platform that allows the adding of custom studies to your charts. I'm pretty certain I use the same trading platform as Al based on his in-person small group meeting presentations (thinkorswim by T.D. Ameritrade). These custom scripts can be gotten on various message boards for free so don't let this issue stop you from reading this book.Al's approach is heavily probability based so he spends a lot of time in his book explaining this and then he demonstrates how to apply this probability approach to selecting good trades. Almost all of my trades have been "defined risk" except for a couple short puts. I'm mentioning this to let you know this book is definitely for beginners as well as those more experienced. I look forward to employing some "earnings trade" concepts but I have purposely started slow to make sure I understand the content in this book.I'm confident this book will become a Classic. It is so well written and directed at those really wanting to learn and profit from trading options.Update June 20, 2015: May 2015 results finished 24 wins, 8 losses and June 2015 results finished 22 wins, 3 losses......this book is a strong buy.

At the very least there should have been a chapter on communications and connecting with your family after an event.

The school of St. Margaret's Hospital was fortunate in its lecturer on Medical Jurisprudence, or Forensic Medicine, as it is sometimes described. At some schools the lecturer on this subject is appointed apparently for the reason that he lacks the qualifications to lecture on any other. But with us it was very different: John Thorndyke was not only an enthusiast, a man of profound learning and great reputation, but he was an exceptional teacher, lively and fascinating in style and of endless resources. Every remarkable case that had ever been recorded he appeared to have at his fingers' ends; every fact—chemical, physical, biological, or even historical—that could in any way be twisted into a medico-legal significance, was pressed into his service; and his own varied and curious experiences seemed as inexhaustible as the widow's cruse. One of his favourite devices for giving life and interest to a rather dry subject was that of analysing and commenting upon contemporary cases as reported in the papers (always, of course, with a due regard to the legal and social proprieties); and it was in this way that I first became introduced to the astonishing series of events that was destined to exercise so great an influence on my own life.

The Vanishing Man, by R. Austin Freeman

About the Author Deemed 'the father of the scientific detective story', Richard Austin Freeman enjoyed a prolific career that saw him gain qualifications as pharmacist and surgeon, pull off a diplomatic coup along the Gold Coast, work for Holloway Prison and then become a formidable writer of fiction. He was born in London, the son of a tailor who went on to train as a pharmacist. After graduating as a surgeon at the Middlesex Hospital Medical College, Freeman taught for a while and then joined the colonial service, offering his skills as an assistant surgeon along the Gold Coast of Africa. He became embroiled in a diplomatic mission when a British expeditionary party was sent to investigate the activities of the French. Through his tact and formidable intelligence, a massacre was narrowly avoided. His future was therefore assured in the colonial service. However, after becoming ill with black-water fever, Freeman was sent back to England to recover and finding his finances precarious, embarked on a career as acting physician in Holloway Prison. In desperation, he also turned to writing where he went on to dominate the world of British detective fiction, taking pride in testing different criminal techniques. So keen was he, part of one of his best novels was written in a bomb shelter. For the first twenty-five years of his writing career, Freeman was to dominate and remain unrivalled in the world of detective fiction, introducing the well-loved and highly memorable 'Dr Thorndyke'. The continued success of this character has affirmed Richard Austin Freeman's place amongst the finest of crime writers.

Is there any connection between the two?As the story progresses, one wants to tell the omniscient scientist collecting data that he should check the DNA. But. of course, DNA was unknown at the time. Instead, he uses the technology of the day and brilliantly solves the mystery.Interesting too is that people really haven't changed much since this was written, only customs.I agree with the previous reviewers. It was an interesting book, and I'm glad I read it.

It is a wonderful period fiction piece. A mystery that keeps you turning the pages and beautifully written. I loved it!

26 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Back in Time . . . By Amazon Customer I downloaded this book to see how the Kindle app worked on my iTouch. Didn't expect much for a free book. First of all, I'm thrilled with the Kindle app and how it has worked, but found myself totally engrossed in this delightful read. As one reviewer has commented, I too, loved the "no sex, no violence, no swearing" (or something like that) aspect of this book. It is informative to read the customs of those days and period pieces typically help me remember how very far our technology has progressed in such a short time.I would gladly read more writings by this author.

Ebook PDF Shocked: A Doctor Investigates the Blurred Lines Between Life and Death, by David Casarett M.D.

As a young medical student, Dr. David Casarett was inspired by the story of a two-year-old girl named Michelle Funk. Michelle fell into a creek and was underwater for over an hour. When she was found she wasn’t breathing, and her pupils were fixed and dilated. But after three hours of persistent work, a team of doctors and nurses was able to bring her back.If Michelle could come back after three hours of being dead, what about twelve hours? Or twenty-four? What would it take to revive someone who had been frozen for one thousand years? And what does blurring the line between "life" and "death" mean for society? In Shocked, Casarett chronicles his exploration of the cutting edge of resuscitation and reveals just how far science has come. He takes us to a conference of "cryonauts" who want to be frozen after they die, a dark room full of hibernating lemurs in North Carolina, and a laboratory that puts mice into a state of suspended animation. The result is a spectacular tour of the bizarre world of doctors, engineers, animal biologists, and cryogenics enthusiasts trying to bring the recently dead back to life.Fascinating, thought-provoking, and funny, Shocked is perfect for those looking for a prequel—and a sequel—to Mary Roach’s Stiff, or for anyone who likes to ponder the ultimate questions of life and death.

The Big Mac Rule of Resuscitation and the Search for the Limits of Life

When I was a kid, long before I contemplated going to medical school, the television in our living room was the sole source of all of my medical knowledge. Before I ever dissected a cadaver or listened to a heart, shows like M*A*S*H; St. Elsewhere; Doogie Howser, MD; Chicago Hope; and ER taught me how to be a doctor. Specifically, they taught me that doctors are firm, decisive, quick-thinking, and almost always successful.

Television also taught me how to bring someone back to life. Fortunately, that was a simple lesson for an eight-year-old. The television version of resuscitation followed a script that was mercifully predictable, and that predictability was helpfully marked by several reliable guideposts along the way.

First, someone’s heart would stop. That cessation of a heartbeat was usually heralded by unmistakable signs, including but not limited to gasping, choking, eye rolling, and chest clutching.

Next, and typically without any discernible delay whatsoever, everyone within hailing distance would descend on the newly dead character. One of these self-appointed rescuers would then place two hands on the character’s chest and bounce up and down heroically. It was also at about this point that another rescuer—usually a tall, handsome doctor—performed a strange sort of kissy procedure with his mouth, guaranteed to provoke slack-jawed fascination in a boy not yet in middle school, especially if the victim was a woman. Finally, if the episode were really top-notch, someone would produce a pair of paddles, apply them to the victim’s chest, and yell, “Clear!” (At some point, I developed the unshakable conviction that this shouted incantation had some ill-defined yet essential electrical effect on the victim’s heart. I have a hazy recollection of standing over my freshly late hamster one sad morning and yelling, “Clear!” repeatedly in hopes of encouraging little Frankie to rejoin the living. Alas, Frankie was unfamiliar with the rules of televised resuscitations, and he remained persistently and unambiguously deceased.)

Then there would be a strategic yet wholly incongruous commercial break, after which we’d be back in the thick of things. On cue, the victim would tire of being kissed by a tall, handsome doctor and would wake up. Or, occasionally—and just for variety’s sake—the handsome doctor would tire of kissing a person who was becoming increasingly dead. Then he would stand up, say something solemn, and stride off purposefully toward the next crisis.

It was thanks to these scenes that I developed a deep and lasting impression of how resuscitation works when people try to die. For instance, I came to believe that resuscitation works. Maybe not always, but almost always. It seemed as though even if you were dead, as long as there was a good-looking doctor nearby, you wouldn’t be dead for long.

I also became convinced that if resuscitation is going to work, it’s going to work very, very fast. A perceptive watcher of these shows would conclude that the fate of a newly dead person is determined in the span of time that it takes to learn about the merits of cookies made by Keebler Elves or a sing-along of the McDonald’s Big Mac jingle. Let’s call this the Big Mac rule of resuscitation. By then, your victim is probably wide-awake and hugging the rescuers. If she isn’t, then you might as well switch channels.

So I persisted in my fantasies about resuscitation for quite some time.

But then a girl named Michelle died.

From the Hardcover edition.

Wright I have been interested in resuscitation since reading Kouwenhoven's article in JAMA in 1960, at the time being a sophomore in High School. It was a epiphany for me, as what Kouwenhoven and Jude wrote, revolutionized the understanding of death. What had been the criteria to determine death before 1960 suddenly became the diagnostic parameters for emergency resuscitation. I went on to become a physician, and then a forensic pathologist. I was really excited to institute Code Blue in Homer G Phillips in Saint Louis in 1968. I became an advanced cardiac life support instructor. Then in 1972, I responded to a motor vehicle crash scene in Vermont. The unbelted lady in the passenger seat was drowning on her own blood. I quickly intubated her. I felt quite good about this save.I autopsied her two weeks later. I lost a great deal of my enthusiasm for resuscitation.Dr. Casarett has done an amazing job of searching the history of resuscitation, going back to original works of the drowning society in London.Really well written, and for me a great work, with references. Kouwenhoven appearing near the middle. So what I had thought was the beginning, was only another step in a long history

Shocked was fun reading, providing lots of history, insight, and thought provoking material, mostly serious, but with a perfect mix and treatment of unique (if not absurd) practices. Recounting the therapeutic application of tobacco smoke is bound to provoke class participation. If this book had been published before Monty Python, there might have been a few more great movie scenes.

The Eye of Zeitoon, by Talbot Mundy

About the Author Many of his novels, including his first novel Rung Ho!, and his most famous work King of the Khyber Rifles, are set in India during the British Raj in which the loyal British officers encounter ancient Indian mysticism. The novels portray the citizens of Imperial India as enigmatic, romantic and powerful. His British characters have many encounters with the mysterious Thugee Cults. The long buildup to the introduction of his Indian Princess Yasmini and the scenes among the outlaws in the Khinjan Caves clearly influenced fantasy writers Robert E. Howard and Leigh Brackett. Other science-fiction and fantasy writers who cited Mundy as an influence included Robert A. Heinlein, E. Hoffmann Price, Fritz Leiber, Andre Norton, H. Warner Munn, Marion Zimmer Bradley and Daniel Easterman. James Hilton's novel Lost Horizon was partly inspired by Mundy's work.

Not just that, Chemistry class in Nursing includes Organic and Inorganic Chem ALL IN ONE semester. How's that? I wish I had this book before I enrolled into college. I really wish I had this! The book really helped me understand Chemistry so well. If I had this book, I guess I would not need to curse my professor in college.
