Detailed and long but iteresting By Amazon Customer Quite detailed papers about various topics related to quantum physics; some of them describe connections with the metaphysical and paranormal phenomena from a scientific standpoint and most include descriptions of relationships with consciousness. There's a lot of mind-blowing stuff in these papers about time and how quantum physics necessarily means there can be future events affecting the present and the past and the observer's role in time perspectives, etc. I certainly did not understand everything but I did read it all and many of the scientific explanations are intriguing. There are conflicting theories and many present redundant views; one very lengthy paper was admittedly quite circuitous and the author kept repeating himself, which could have been edited down to a much shorter version. This book is a collection by numerous authors, who all present numerous references.I would not classify this as light reading and many readers may not enjoy this sort of book. It was obviously written for other than the layperson so be prepared to not understand a lot of this if you are not a not a classical physicist but I don't think you have to understand all the physics completely in order to enjoy the implications of many of the theories. Maybe some of this actually narrows the span between the individual and the cosmos, between the metaphysical and the scientific, between the material and the spiritual. Maybe, if even some of this is true, we might, in fact, be connected to everything else, to something larger than ourselves, and maybe there is somewhere to be found the elusive theory of everything that Einstein and others have quested for for so long.

Interesting but potentially confusing By Martin Fricke Adding to the commendable review here, "Detailed and long but interesting", I would note that the terminology in the 30 separate papers is not entirely consistent, which adds to any confusion about the different viewpoints and arguments expressed. It is unfortunate that some final chapter was not assembled by a few of the most prominent authors, including in particular Roger Penrose, to integrate and summarize the principal points of consensus.

By Hong Ha Thi Nguyen This is a really good book which explains a lot about consciousness and quantum physics. I received this book as a gift and it is fascinating. Its divided into different sections on different topics. It begins with two chapters written by Deepak Chopra and his colleagues, and they give a great overview of his philosophy about the spooky world of quantum physics. The chapters that follow are really good and describe how consciousness, the act of observing can change reality, and how consciousness might be linked to the universe; the cosmology of consciousness. The next Section goes into evolution of consciousness and the brain, and there are chapters about cave paintings from the Paleolithic and how the cave paintings represent the constellations and the stars of the universe. Roger Penrose explains how the brain acts like a quantum computer and is plugged into the universe. There are also really interesting chapters which explain how different areas of the brain are linked to different types of consciousness. The really spooky stuff is how time might be a circle where the future can effect the present, through entanglement, where everything is connected. There are several fascinating chapters about paranormal experiences and the connections to multiple universe and parallel universes. The second half of the book is more difficult that the first, but its worth the read. I think, if you want to understanding consciousness, and quantum physics, this is probably the best book out there.

What is unique was his ability to recall his journey through illness with such clarity and detachment, then to strategically manage not only his cure but the movement he founded. Beers was an otherwise common man, obsessed by an uncommon drive in extraordinary circumstances. In "A Mind that Found Itself" he bequeathed to those with mental illness, their families, and advocates, insight into mental health and treatment that would unite science and humanitarianism as never before."A Mind That Found Itself" is Beers' personal journey from tragedy, through adversity, to an epiphany of purpose and conviction to see it through. At first, the reader cannot help but pity him as the persistent dread Beers experiences gives way to delusion and, ultimately, a suicide attempt that adds physical suffering to his already anguished mind. But this is also the story of institutional life at the time. From August 1900 until September 1903 Beers was hospitalized in three different institutions. His experiences offended his sense of justice. They galvanized in him a resolve to rescue those who were at the mercy of untrained attendants and reform the system that held them captive.By all accounts, Clifford Whittingham Beers had a normal childhood. The fourth of five children, his problems began when an older brother was thought to have contracted epilepsy and died. Beers obsessed that he, too, would suffer the same fate. He had hallucinations, delusions and manic-depressive episodes. Today his condition would probably have been diagnosed early and managed with counseling and a once-a-day pill.In 1900, however, mental illness was not well understood and tolerated even less. It was the birth of the Industrial Age and America was, after all, a nation of independent people and a laissez-faire economy. It was widely accepted that the individual who pursued his own self-interest would contribute best to society as a whole. Mental illness was a failure of breeding, of will, or of faith, and blight on the family name. Beers himself notes, "What they could not understand they would seldom tolerate."At the turn of the 20th century in America, it was not uncommon for mental patients to be restrained, cast away in solitude, and treated much the same as criminals. Relatives, albeit sometimes reluctantly, abandoned them to the so-called professionals "who knew best." As Beers wrote, they thought that paying "a considerable sum of money each week would ensure kindly treatment" of their family member. It did not. More revenue only enhanced profit; more profit begat even greater profit. To wit, Beers relates the hiring of an unskilled, inexperienced "tramp" to provide direct care to a suffering terminal patient. Men willing to work for "the paltry wage of $18 a month" seldom attracted competent workers. Beatings, forced feedings, and mechanical restraints were common. After all, these techniques were "cost effective" in the unregulated institutions.An assertion of self righteous contempt for contemptible authority is little comfort when that authority asserts itself. Consequences follow risks. Most often, Beers was prepared for the consequences and managed his risk taking in such a way that he saw and experienced what others would not; what others could not grasp, or tell. Sometimes, reality hit with brute force. Lesson learned. But this time the story would be told.Beers published "A Mind That Found Itself" in 1908. Also that year, he founded the Connecticut Society for Mental Hygiene; in 1909 the National Committee for Mental Hygiene (in 1950 it was recognized as the National Association for Mental Health in the USA) and in 1931 the International Foundation for Mental Health Hygiene.In the highly respected classic, '"The Mentally Ill In America," Albert Deutsch' credits Beers as "the Founder of the Mental Hygiene Movement" that exposed the lives of the mentally ill and the treatment they received. A self-described `mental incompetent,' Beers awoke the conscience of his community, and then the world, to the fact that to begin to respect the lives of the mentally ill one only need first to look in the mirror. Such was his genius.

Very beautiful book about Spiritual Life By Leandro Meinhardt This is a very beautiful book, giving a better, even though old (1688-1772), and more current vision about our responsibilities. Follow a small paragraph from the book:"...Man is placed in the middle between heaven and hell. Out of heaven goods unceasingly flow in, and out of hell evils unceasingly flow in; and as man is between he has freedom to think what is good or to think what is evil. This freedom the Lord never takes away from anyone, for it belongs to his life, and is the means of his reformation...."At this time, he would still call "Umbral" as Hell, but a modern Spiristism would adapt this temporarily region as "Umbral".His detailed explanation on the 10 commandments should be read by everyone. This is not a religious book, this is a spiritual book.

Absolutely brilliant By Peter Jochinger To help understand the works from this author this book has the best of all the modern day translations of his works.It should be the stepping stone to his other works.The detailed narrative to the Ten Commandments are a delight to read.The importance of understanding the Bible is explained in a unique way. This makes the book very enjoyable as it highlights the impotance of the Word in it's truest form.This book is a real treasure and food for the soul.

Gottlob Frege's Grundgesetze der Arithmetik, or Basic Laws of Arithmetic, was intended to be his magnum opus, the book in which he would finally establish his logicist philosophy of arithmetic. But because of the disaster of Russell's Paradox, which undermined Frege's proofs, the more mathematical parts of the book have rarely been read. Richard G. Heck, Jr., aims to change that, and establish it as a neglected masterpiece that must be placed at the center of Frege's philosophy. Part I of Reading Frege's Grundgesetze develops an interpretation of the philosophy of logic that informs Grundgesetze, paying especially close attention to the difficult sections of Frege's book in which he discusses his notorious 'Basic Law V' and attempts to secure its status as a law of logic. 0 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Magisterial By Flash Sheridan I’ve been eagerly (though sporadically) reading this work, so far up to chapter 9. The publication of the translation of the _Grundgesetze_ itself has sidetracked me temporarily, but Amazon’s robots have been nagging me to review this on the grounds that no-one else has done so. So I’ll note the obvious, that this is a magisterial work of enormous benefit to anyone who is, or will be, reading one of the greatest achievements of the human intellect, and I’m outraged at the academic(s) who delayed it by telling Professor Heck that he wouldn’t get tenure if he worked on Frege. [footnote three of preface]    Much as I’m enjoying it, I do have a few presentational quibbles. The general comment is that I would have appreciated more foreshadowing; sometimes when the author makes a comment about the point to a proof I’ve just struggled through, I would have liked to know the point before the struggle, e.g., at the end of §6.7, and the top of p. 222. Slightly more substantively (but only slightly), the elucidation of (56) on p. 147 is in a slightly different order from the formula elucidated, transposing two conjuncts in the middle line. By Gio The 'Reverberator' is not, as some readers might feverishly suppose, a hand-held device for erotic auto-stimulation, nor is it one of those fashionable quivery armchairs. No, it's the name on the masthead of an American tabloid, a racy gossip sheet, for which Mr. George Flack is the Parisian correspondent. The only vibrations you'll experience while reading this 1888 novella will be the shaking of your sides at Henry James's wry satire. Mr. Flack is the driving anti-hero of this tale, a prophetic verbal 'paparazzo' of sensationalist journalism, a man with a vision of the vulgar times we have to admit to be ours; speaking to a young woman he hopes to impress, he says: "You ain't going to be able any longer to monopolize any fact of general interest, and it ain't going to be right you should; it ain't going to be possible to keep out anywhere the light of the Press... We'll see who's private then, and whose hands are off, and who'll frustrate the people -- the People that wants to know. That's a sign of the American people that they do want to know..." Mr Flack is the obnoxious harbinger of People Magazine, and of the politics of exposé and outright defamations that degrades American democracy today. The changing societal modes of privacy versus publicity are central themes of the two novellas James published together in his mid career, "The Reverberator" and "A London Life".All the principal characters of The Reverberator are Americans in Paris. Mr. Flack's object of admiration is the winsome Francie Dosson, in Paris with her plain but ambitious older sister Delia and their wealthy retired father. The Dossons, to put it plainly, are rubes. Mr. Dosson is as culturally and intellectually blank as John Locke's slate; his only claim to any specific personhood has been his knack for making money through investments. Delia is 'horridly' declassé, vulgar to her toes. Francie is unaccountably beautiful and graceful, but she is exactly what modern observers would call an "airhead". Flack introduces her to yet another American in Paris, the 'rising' impressionist painter Waterlow, for whom Francie agrees to pose though she finds his paintings bizarre. At Waterlow's studio, another 'American' enters the story: Gaston Probert, the scion of a Catholic family that migrated to France from the Carolinas in flight from abolition and democracy. The Proberts have wealth, still based in America, and have married into the staunchly reactionary French Legitimist aristocracy. They are the stiffest of snobs, but young Gaston is at sea over his own identity, unsure of his true national character and of his manly worth on the terms of either culture. Each character in this novella is simultaneously a stinging caricature and yet a perfectly plausible individual. The romantic tussle that results from their chance encounter reveals each of them to be exactly who they seem, even when they aren't quite capable of knowing themselves.The Reverberator is a brilliant study of characters and a well-paced comic tale. Henry James's wit, to be sure, often takes the form of syntactical feints and pirouettes. Ah reckin thet sorta wit ain't fer ev'body ... and perhaps this accounts for the diffuse prejudice among readers today that James is a 'difficult' writer, more work than play. It's not so. "The Reverberator" and its companion "A London Life" are highly entertaining, even as they dig psychologically under the surface of ordinary human relations.

By mojosmom In our time, socialites, celebrities and people "famous for being famous" hire publicists and are content to have their private lives made fodder for the public press. Indeed, they are often complicit in the revelation of the most intimate details of their lives and seem to agree with the saying that "no publicity is bad publicity".Henry James would be shocked. Simon Nowell-Smith points out in his introduction to my edition of this novel James' reaction to a public report of a private conversation between Julian Hawthorne and James Russell Lowell; he called it a "beastly and blackguardly betrayal". But he took an incident in which a young American who had been admitted into Venetian society wrote an account of that society for a New York newspaper, and was widely excoriated in Venice for so doing, and turned it into this charming novel.The Dossons, father and two daughters, serious Delia and flighty Francie, are Americans in Paris. Coming over, they had made the acquaintance of George Flack, a journalist whose job is to find stories for an American 'society-paper'. He has attached himself to the Dossons, showing them Paris, while smoking Mr. Dosson's cigars, spending his money, and having a flirtation with Francie. He introduces her to the expatriate Impressionist portraitist, Charles Waterlow (possibly based on John Singer Sargent?) who begins to paint her portrait. During the sittings, she meets a young man, Gaston Probert, an American who had never been in America, having been born and raised in France, his father a "Gallomaniac", his sisters having married into French society (two into the nobility). Inevitably, Francie and Gaston fall in love, and, after her charm overcomes some familial objections of the Proberts, they become engaged.All is going swimmingly, Francie is taken into the bosom of the Proberts, learning the ways of French society, until Gaston heads to the United States to take care of some business for his family, as well as for Mr. Dosson. While he is away, George Flack re-appears. One lesson Francie has not learned is that a young engaged woman does not go out alone with a young man who is not her betrothed. But she takes the view that Flack is an old acquaintance and what's the harm? The harm turns out to be that he, by judicious questioning and saying he merely wants to write about Waterlow's painting of her, sets her chattering about her fiancé's family, and the resultant newspaper story causes a storm. Francie still cannot quite understand the harm she has done. "I thought he would just speak about my being engaged and give a little account; so many people in America would be interested." What she doesn't grasp is that the Proberts do not want "people in America" (or France, for that matter) to be interested in their private lives."The Reverberator" was first written as a serial in early 1888, and published in book form shortly thereafter. James extensively revised it twenty years later, but my edition is that of the 1888 book. Nowell-Smith's introduction, which compares this and the later edition, shows that the revisions were not an improvement! The ease of language here, very different from James' later "tortuosity of expression", perfectly expresses the wide-eyed naïveté of Francie.

Schneider She seemed to be doing nothing as hard as she could.The problem with this short novel from the 1880s is that there are no real people in it, only shadow lines of 2 dimensions. Between two fat novels (Princess Casamassima and Tragic Muse), James apparently felt obliged (publisher's pressure?) to produce something shorter and funnier. He did and some readers have liked it, but I can't quite warm up to it.Usually, James' strength was in his psychological finesse, which could make me see an interest in people and problems that I might otherwise ignore. He does not achieve that here. Also, in general I like his shorter pieces better, but Francie and Gaston have left me cold. James' women are a subject of their own, and there is a lot of variation among them, but I can't remember any heroine as uninteresting as Francie. Nor any main male as boring as Gaston.We have an encounter of 2 families in Paris, both of American origin, both, oddly, without mother. A wealthy man from Boston travels Europe with 2 daughters, a bossy but ugly one and a pretty but mindless one. A Frenchified resident family, whose wealth is based on property in Carolina, consists of a snobbish aging father, a do-nothing son, and 3 daughters married to various French aristocrats.The do-nothing son and the pretty but mentally flat daughter get entangled, but even that happens without much excitement. The excitement comes from a slip by the girl: she tells some family secrets to a failed suitor who works for an American scandal press product. That complicates things for a while, as the yellow press usually will. If the yellow press were more in the forefront of the story, the novel might be more interesting. As it is, I can't find it very funny.
