The maps provided are an excellent resource for identification; i received the book early and in almost new condition, great book and great seller.

At first glance it seems outdated with illustrations and poor black and white photos, but it has grown on me. The illustrations actually make understanding the subtle differences in leaves easier than actual photos. I do find myself using this book to identify plants and then use Google to find photos for confirmation. I would give 5 stars if it had a few high quality color photos along with the illustrations.

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

Visually stunning and incredibly informative. Like to learn everything there is to know about the 38 species of wild cats? Then get this book.Long version: This book covers the 38 species (including the Southern Tigrina!) with the latest information there is about each species. Each species has the following topics covered: Taxonomy and phylogeny, description, distribution and habitat, feeding ecology, social and spacial behavior, reproduction and demography, and status and threats. The text is incredibly in-depth, though written in a way that allows easy reading even for non-scientists. Each species is introduced by a beautiful full body drawing which makes identification easy, along with a range map, and skull drawing. Then come the pictures -- they are simply stunning. Even if you were to only flip through the book for the pictures, it would be money well spent. Most pictures are of cats in the wild, instead of captivity (which is often incredibly hard for the smaller species), and when they were taken in captivity, they are clearly marked as such. Some of the species have pictures which I have never seen published before (like the African Golden Cat). When pictures aren't available to illustrate a certain behavior, beautiful black and white drawings do so instead. It's simply stunningly organized and designed.I would say this book is as much appropriate for children learning about the different wild cat species for the first time as well as seasoned biologists who want to know the latest information on the cat species. I'm definitely buying a few more copies to hand out as gifts.

The book is not bad, but is far from being an excellent and comprehensive book By Fabio Oliveira do Nascimento When the book was announced, I had great expectation that it would be an update of the homonym book written by Mel & Fiona Sunquist in 2002, presenting not only color photographs and illustrations but also detailed information about ecology, systematics, morphology, evolution and genetics of Felidae. However, when I had my copy in hand, my expectations went up in smoke. The book is not bad, but is far from being an excellent and comprehensive book; it is beautifully produced, with very impressive pictures with excellent photos of the animals in wildlife and beautiful illustrations of different species, which have been used in the book "Field Guide of the Carnivores of the World" (written by the same authors), and the language used in the book was clearly made to achieve the non-specialist readers. Despite all this, there are some issues that can be corrected in a possible 2nd edition, for example, the scientific name of jaguarundi (the correct is “yagouaroundi” and not “yaguarondi”) and the correct authorship of the two oncilla species. The authorship of Leopardus tigrinus (Northern Oncilla) is the German naturalist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber, who described the species in 1775 under the name of Felis tigrina. In the book, they put Schreber as the author of other species of oncilla, Leopardus guttulus (Southern Oncilla), but this latter species was originally described by Reinhold Friedrich Hensel in 1872, who name the species as Felis guttula. Moreover, contrary to the book, Trigo et al. (2013) are not the authors who described L. tigrinus, but they revalidated L. guttulus as a full species based on molecular characters (L. guttulus was traditionally considered as a subspecies of L. tigrinus). This question seems silly, but it is a taxonomic error and probably this error will spread. It would be something like how to change the father's name of someone: John has a father who is called Peter and Joseph has a father who called Paul, but someone started to say that the name of John's father is Paul and the name of Joseph’s father is Richard. Anyway, if you're looking for more detailed and complete information, I highly recommend the following books: "Wild Cats of the World" by Mel Suquist & Fiona Sunquist (2002); "Wild Cats: Status Survey and Conservation Action Plan" by Peter Jackson & Kristin Nowell (1996); "Biology and Conservation of Wild Felids" by David W Macdonald & Andrew J Loveridge (2010); "The Natural History of Wild Cats" by Andrew Kitchener (1991).

It seems like something I might try out and based on the book it looks very promising. This is a good guide so I recommend getting it if you're interested.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Turn a profit with your own crafts today! By Maria Caridad Lopez III An amazing book, that brings a breath of fresh air to the table. This book does not talk about the usual making money "quick fixes" such as how to look for the best platform, or where to invest blah blah... It does however help you find a new, fair way to talk with your inner self and make plans about your goals of making money with your drawing skills. This is a very helpful book for the novice who is just contemplating becoming involved in art business. It starts at the real beginnings. Your beginnings, to reflect on how you look at and value money. It also covers both the basics of drawing portraits, as a refresher, such as proportions, anatomy, rendering as well as more advanced tips and techniques. If you are considering a venture into the craft world, this book seems very helpful. It is a great guide to help you turn a profit with your own crafts.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Creating is not where the money is, it's in selling and marketing. By Denniger Bolton This is the second of Vincent Noot's books that I have read. After reading his "How to Draw Realistic Pencil Portraits" and getting some experience at drawing from a photograph, I thought, why not try to make a little money doing this, so I downloaded this one. And I'm not disappointed. Right now, my drawings are just a hobby, but someday, when the talent kicks in, maybe I'll take my new found experience to a trade show, or fair like Mr. Noot has. The book talks about how to market your work on websites, Ebay, Social Media, going to Events and making up handouts and basically how to talk it up.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A well researched work of pre-1947 UFO phenomena By Kay Coggin I found Return to Magonia an intriguing and thought provoking read! It is a comprehensive, intelligent investigation of twenty historical UFO sightings from the past 500 years. The authors have used science, technology and historical context to determine if the cases were truly anomalous. I liked that it is extensively illustrated with photos, diagrams and archival material. Return to Magonia is unlike any UFO book I have ever read. A refreshing and totally different look at the mystery and history of UFOs.

When UFOs, history and science meet By Amazon Customer This book surpasses all earlier attempts at documenting historical reports of strange occurrences in the heavens, including its predecessor “Wonders in the Sky”. This time, the authors actually try to find scientific explanations for some of the very weird phenomena reported in the past. And they leave no stone unturned in their quest for answers: historical context is studied to better understand the wording used in the old descriptions, background information is gathered about the people who reported the incidents and, where possible, references to landscape features and buildings are used to determine azimuth, altitude, size and distance of the reported phenomena. Finally, sky maps and (when available) weather data are consulted to obtain the completest possible picture of what may have happened in each case.Unlike so many writers on the UFO subject, AUBECK and SHOUGH are not trying to accomplish the impossible by wanting to attribute all reports to one single cause. The explanations they propose can be meteorological, astronomical, biological, man-made or whatever. What also makes this book atypical is that, if no explanation is found, the authors simply say so without reverting to exotic theories or hinting at otherworldly visitors. Personally, I would have given less weight to some of the reported details, especially if they stand in the way of what otherwise looks like a good explanation. After all, experience with modern UFO reports tell us that witnesses are almost always mistaken in their estimates of direction, elevation, size and distance. This will not have been different centuries ago. On the other hand, it must be emphasized that the authors have tried to avoid this problem as much as possible by selecting those incidents that have lots of verifiable elements in them. Most cases they dissect have more than just anecdotic data.I would label “Return to Magonia” an original marriage between history and science, packed in 21 chapters that read like short detective stories. Ufology doesn't come better than this.
