About the Author Enoch Arnold Bennett, the son of a solicitor, was born in Hanley, Staffordshire in 1867. He was educated locally and at London University, before working initially as a solicitor's clerk, but soon turned to writing popular serial fiction and editing a women's magazine. After the publication of his first novel, 'A Man from the North' in 1898 he became a professional writer and some of his best and most enduring and acclaimed work, including 'Anna of the Five Towns', 'The Old Wives' Tale', 'Clayhanger', 'The Card' and 'Hilda Lessways' followed over the next twelve years. Soon after the outbreak of the First World War, Bennett was invited to join the War Propaganda Bureau, concerned with finding ways of best promoting Britain's interests. He was in good company, as others who contributed to this effort included Conan Doyle, John Masefield, G. K. Chesterton, Sir Henry Newbolt, John Galsworthy, Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling, Gilbert Parker, G. M. Trevelyan and H. G. Wells. Bernard Shaw knew nothing of the Bureau, but attacked what he believed to be jingoistic articles and poems being produced by British writers. Bennett was the one chosen to defend their actions. He served on a War Memorial Committee at the invitation of the then Minister of Information, Lord Beaverbrook, and was also appointed director of British propaganda in France. His spells in Paris added to his reputation as a man of cosmopolitan and discerning tastes. After the War he inevitably returned to writing novels and also became a director of the 'New Statesman'. Bennett's great reputation is built upon the success of his novels and short stories set in the Potteries, an area of north Staffordshire that he recreated as the 'Five Towns'. 'Anna of the Five Towns' and 'The Old Wives' Tale' show the influence of Flaubert, Maupassant and Balzac as Bennett describes provincial life in great detail. Arnold Bennett is an important link between the English novel and European realism. He wrote several plays and lighter works such as 'The Grand Babylon Hotel' and 'The Card'. Arnold Bennett died in 1931.

They are definitely period (20's and 30's) and somewhat dated but they fulfill a nice, clean mystery niche By Patty I am enjoying this series of books written by Carolyn Wells over 80 years ago. They are definitely period (20's and 30's) and somewhat dated but they fulfill a nice, clean mystery niche. The characters are somewhat predictable but what mystery story written in that time period wasn't somewhat formulaic?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Glimpse into another time. By Sharon Sprouse I have read a number of Carolyn Wells' mysteries now. They are all similar although the characters do change. These are interesting because they are good period pieces. I got a glimpse into the high society folks from before WW1. Since I have read a lot of mysteries I pay close attention to what she writes, what characters she introduces and when. I can usually figure it out within the first two or three chapters but not always. So I like that her stories keep me trying to figure out "who dun it".

No red herrings, which I feel are so unnecessary when you're a good writer. Also it is especially the right choice to read when on a short ride or vacation, especially if you love British Mysteries like I do.

Woodward This 1889 book opens with the explanation: "Choice cookery is not intended for households that have to study economy, except where economy is a relative term; where, perhaps, the housekeeper could easily spend a dollar for the materials of a luxury, but could not spare the four or five dollars a caterer would charge." It offers the same to today's cooks 6 generations later - how to make good food at home, where you can control ingredients. One example is the humble salad dressing. Easy to make out of ingredients already in the kitchen, easily adjusted for taste or dietary needs, and infinite in the varieties. I see no reason to buy the chemical concoctions on store shelves at 700% the cost of doing it myself. The same can be said for the collection of sauces too.

I started reading them with her when I was 10 and have continued to pick them up every few years. You cannot have a better series than this! This book will enchant the most romantic and warm even the crustiest old heart.

Another pretty good George MacDonald By deborah This is a review of the complete story in both volumes I and II.George MacDonald's stories focus on the journey of a lost soul seeking its creator. In this story, Eleanor is the lost soul who, after meeting the missionary Mr. Rhys on an afternoon outing, longs for the "Helmet of salvation" that will free her from the fear of death and the knowledge that she is not ready to meet her maker. This fear becomes unbearably exacerbated as she undergoes a difficult illness, but she can't figure out how to get the helmet, or get it on. On her recovery, her handsome and titled suitor joins forces with her ambitious mother to manipulate her into marriage. Meanwhile, Mr. Rhys has promised to obey his calling to become a missionary in a remote island of cannibals.The story is a fascinating one - like the other reviewer, I found the portrayal of a suitor who is unbelievably selfish and manipulative while seeming to be nothing but considerate and loving to be mesmerizing. Immature Eleanor, without the strength of faith, is unable to free herself from the dual manipulative tactics of her mother and Mr. Carlisle, and equally unable in her confusion and despair to figure out how to finally get the faith she longs for.In comparison to most Christian writing, this book definitely deserves five stars. In comparison to the George MacDonald novels that are my favorites, though, it deserves only three (I think What's Mine is Mine and Donal Grant are far better). I had to average it out to four.It was difficult for me to stay engaged with Eleanor through most of Volume I. After hearing very plain speaking and clear instructions for what one must do to acquire faith and the fearless "helmet" she so longs for, Eleanor somehow still never, ever, ever does lift a single prayer to God, but only cries at the end of each chapter, "What shall become of me?" After about the fifth time this happened, I started flipping through. She finally does start praying, and things finally move along in that regard, but oh, does she ever have a slow start! In the meantime, the manipulative Mr. Carlisle has made it impossible for her to break off her engagement, though she is aware of Mr. Carlisle's worldliness, and is becoming enough aware of her attraction to Mr. Rhys to realize she should not marry him. But Mr. Rhys goes to Fiji... and Mr. Carlisle and her mother remain immune even to definite refusals.I love how George MacDonald clearly and intuitively draws out the motivations and thoughts of his key characters, and how clearly he draws a picture of the essential elements of robust and growing faith, though I don't always fully agree with some of his conclusions about doctrine. I recommend this book, but not as much as the two others.

It was fascinating,and, more than that, it provoked me to think deeply about certain verses in the Bible and about my own spiritual walk. It was hard to put down for the suspense in it: how would Eleanor finally decide in regard to the man who loved her and wanted to marry her. The relationship between them was...fascinating is the best word for it. I'm on volume 2 now. The ending of volume 1 was unpredictable but perfectly right and satisfying.

People are inventing all this subtext that it's pro-imperialism or anti-imperialism and that's rubbish. It's a simple story about life. Some of the wording is confusing, since it's local English slang. Other than that, it isn't brilliant or anything, but rather fond and above average.

The MUSIC in the first half of the audio drowns out Kipling's story. It's as if the narrator was standing directly in front of an orchestra. Fortunately, the music's absent entirely in the second half. [ A relatively rare example of someone somewhere not giving a d%mn about the audio edition at all.]Kipling's story, however, what you can hear of it, is excellent. The two British adventurers in Afghanistan have a tale worth listening to.If you can hear it.

An unnamed narrator, estranged from his family and country, sets sail as a passenger aboard a cargo ship from Batavia (now known as Jakarta, Indonesia). Some days into the voyage, the ship is first becalmed then hit by a Simoon (a combination of a sand storm and hurricane) that capsizes the ship and sends everyone except the narrator and an old Swede overboard. Driven southward by the magical Simoon towards the South Pole, the narrator's ship eventually collides with a gigantic black galleon, and only the narrator manages to scramble aboard. Once the new ship arrives, the narrator finds outdated maps and useless navigational tools throughout the ship. Also, he finds it to be manned by elderly crewmen who are unable to see him; he steals writing materials from the captain's cabin to keep a journal (the "manuscript" of the title) which he resolves to cast into the sea. This ship too continues to be driven southward, and he notices the crew appears to show signs of hope at the prospect of their destruction as it reaches Antarctica. The ship enters a clearing in the ice where it is caught in a vast whirlpool and begins to sink into the sea.

A good, somewhat scary story By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson When the unnamed narrator of this story ships out of Batavia, he little dreams of the horrifying cruise that he is embarking on. There is a giant black galleon cruising the ocean, and where that ship is voyaging, the narrator is about to find out...whether he wants to or not.This story was one of Edgar Allan Poe’s (1809-49) first tales. It was submitted for a contest in 1833, won, and was published in the newspaper, the Baltimore Saturday Visitor. This story was read by millionaire John P. Kennedy, who subsequently helped Mr. Poe in his career. The rest, as they say, is history.Overall, I found this a good, somewhat scary story that shows the talent of E. A. Poe off to good effect. I liked this story, and highly recommend it.
