This novel shows that unless a spirit of goodness is instilled from very young it is often difficult if not impossible to cultivate one of kindness and generosity. Stealing, lying, cruel tactics are employed to crush those who are weak and helpless. The rich oppress. the poor are repressed. When a dying man is misled to change his will in favor of a son in law the estate ends up in the hands of his daughter's family who are careless and indifferent caretakers. Recompense for evil comes eventually although there is suffering and death. Wonderfully written with a surprise ending.

Griffin This is an idiosyncratic book, which is priced so highly that it will probably be purchased almost exclusively by libraries. But it has many interesting and important features.Fred Hoyle is well known among people who are conversant with astronomy and astrophysics. But few except specialists know just how significant his work has been. For example, the 1957 article known to scientists as “B2FH,” which Burbidge, Burbidge, and Fowler wrote with Hoyle, “unified our understanding of nuclear fusion in stars with the element production visible throughout the universe,” according to Neil de Grasse Tyson and Donald Goldsmith.This book by Theo Walker and Chandra Wickramasinghe, the bibliography for which appears to have everything written by Hoyle (the references fill 8 pages), knows so much about Hoyle partly because Wickramasinghe, after studying with Hoyle, then co-authored many books and articles with him.Also, although Hoyle began as an outspoken atheist, he later, working on fine-tuning, developed a type of theism, in which he considered the entire universe as intelligent. I had assumed that everyone knowing something about such matters knew this. And yet incredibly, Walker and Wickramasinghe reported that this was not true of Helge Kragh’s book, “Cosmology and Controversy” (1996), considered the definitive study of the two basic cosmological theories (the “absolute beginning” type and the “no absolute beginning” type). Kragh’s book falsely said: “When Hoyle was in his early teens he concluded that religious ideas were just fairy tales with no foundation in reality, and he never changed this simplistic atheistic view.”One of the ideas to which Hoyle and Wickramasinghe devoted much time was the thesis that microbial life, rather than having developed (about 4 billion years ago) from a “primordial soup,” came from outer space (cometary panspermia). At one time, this theory was almost universally reviled. But in his book 2001 book, “Life Everywhere: The Maverick Science of Astrobiology,” David Darling said: “Today, panspermia is at least tolerated in polite company. . . . No longer does the mere mention of the word jeopardize a promising career or invite ridicule by one’s scientific peers.”In defending this view, Wickramasinghe wrote: “It is a feature of a good theory to be able to make predictions that can be verified or tested. Since 1981, a flood of new data has continued to match the predictions of the theory of cometary panspermia. This has been true for discoveries from many different disciplines - microbiology, geology, and astronomy. An incorrect theory would not be expected to have had such an uninterrupted record of successes.”With regard to this book’s title, “The Big Bang and God”: The book has remarkably little about the so-called “big bang.” This may be because Hoyle, who coined this term sarcastically, preferred instead a steady-state theory (which he later modified into a quasi-steady-state theory).But the book has a lot about God. The authors argue against the traditional idea of an omnipotent deity – they cite Charles Hartshorne’s book “Omnipotence and Other Theological Mistakes.” But they do suggest that recent cosmology is fully consistent with the type of theism (pan-en-theism) developed by Hartshorne and his forerunner, Alfred North Whitehead.My greatest disappointment with this book is its terribly brief discussion of its reason for affirming a single universe (at a time), not a multiverse. But all in all, this is a valuable book in many ways, with an enormous amount of information – such as the history of the term Astro-Theology, which goes back to 1715.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. ... of “natural theology” in the spirit of process theologians like Alfred Whitehead and Charles Hartshorne with scientific idea By Norman Girardot This work interestingly and copiously lays out current postmodernist thinking about the relation of “natural theology” in the spirit of process theologians like Alfred Whitehead and Charles Hartshorne with scientific ideas about cosmic origins and the astro-biological genesis of organic life as seen especially in the work of the “big bang” and “panspermia” theories of Sir Fred Hoyle. The work itself is not so much a single developed argument but an up-to-date compendium and primer on these fascinating issues with an intelligent running commentary, an appendix of critical reviews of key theorists, and a copious bibliography. The authors (the astronomer and collaborating colleague of Hoyle, Chandra Wickramasinghe, and the process theologian Theodore Walker) not only significantly complement each other with respect to their different disciplinary expertise, but also show that recent developments suggestively point toward a significant postmodern convergence of certain aspects of natural theology and cosmological/astro-biological science – as well as, I should add, various other scientific and humanistic disciplines not the least of which are the arts. What is exciting about this work is how it shows that attempts to denigrate theology (in this case a sophisticated process form of natural theology) in the name of a triumphant atheistic science is not as certain as some contemporary apostles of neo-atheism would maintain. Indeed for some it will be a revelation that Hoyle was not so atheistically one-sided in his latter-day views about a cosmos that displays “fine tuning.” Needless to say, these are perplexed issues fraught with different, and often warring, cultural and emotional perspectives on both “science” and “theology/religion/god.” This book does not pretend to come to any final resolution, but it does make a case for a “constructive advance” in understanding these matters. Recommended for any reader curious about the viability of theism in our postmodern scientific but post-secular world.

Una idea que definitivamente se la tomaría alguien con muy baja autoestima, indicando que limites tu tiepo disponible a tus interlocutores para mantenerte a ti mismo como alguien interesante, cuando la técnica de limitar el tiempo disponible se debe utilizar para mantener el foco en los temas importantes cuando tienes un interlocutor que es muy disperso y no para mantenerte como alguien "impactante". En general, un libro para alguien con pocas herramientas, que no me sedujo en ningún momento. Muy seguramente va a "seducir" a algunos lectores, a aquellos con los que haga click por sus necesidades personales, pero que al tratar de aplicarlo van a estar conscientes de cómo aplicarlas pero no del por qué o para qué ni cuándo es pertinente hacerlo. Sinceramente no valió la pena el gasto, porque en este caso este libro no puedo considerarlo inversión en conocimiento, ni en generación de ideas ni en entretenimiento. Si pudiera pediría un reembolso y le daría -1 estrella.

Al aplicarla con ingenio al ámbito de la vida y los negocios, no pierde de vista la importancia del "otro" como ser importante en el proceso de seducción. He leído mucho sobre seducción que no es más que manipulación, en donde el pseudo seductor está demasiado centrado en sí mismo. En cambio Yudis y Angel presentan algo muy diferente, muy poderoso. Ah, el capítulo llamado "Cómo tener un día Altamente Productivo" paga el libro completo. Lo mejor a mi juicio. Si el libro costara el triple, y solo tuviera ese capítulo, lo compraría sin dudarlo.

From the Author What goes wrong most often in scientific research and data science? Statistics.Statistical analysis is tricky to get right, even for the best and brightest. You'd be surprised how many pitfalls there are, and how many published papers succumb to them. Here's a sample:

• Statistical power. Many researchers use sample sizes that are too small to detect any noteworthy effects and, failing to detect them, declare they must not exist. Even medical trials often don't have the sample size needed to detect a 50% difference in symptoms. And right turns at red lights are legal only because safety trials had inadequate sample sizes.
• Truth inflation. If your sample size is too small, the only way you'll get a statistically significant result is if you get lucky and overestimate the effect you're looking for. Ever wonder why exciting new wonder drugs never work as well as first promised? Truth inflation.
• The base rate fallacy. If you're screening for a rare event, there are many more opportunities for false positives than false negatives, and so most of your positive results will be false positives. That's important for cancer screening and medical tests, but it's also why surveys on the use of guns for self-defense produce exaggerated results.
• Stopping rules. Why not start with a smaller sample size and increase it as necessary? This is quite common but, unless you're careful, it vastly increases the chances of exaggeration and false positives. Medical trials that stop early exaggerate their results by 30% on average.

Alex Reinhart is a statistics Ph.D student at Carnegie Mellon University who received his B.S. in physics at the University of Texas, Austin. He teaches introductory statistics at Carnegie Mellon.

84 of 86 people found the following review helpful. Appealing By Dimitri Shvorob Let me front-load the criticism. I wish an experienced statistics instructor had reviewed the manuscript. The book does better in its second half, where it discusses what I would call problems with empirical-research culture, than in its first half, which has more textbook statistics. The author neglects to explain the basics - things like "sample", "statistic", "sampling distribution", "conditional probability" - and often confuses matters by bringing in issue Y when setting out to discuss issue X. (Appropriately, a section named "Confounding Confounders" is itself confounded: we start talking about "coarsening" data (not what I expected based on the title, by the way; a Y-for-X switch already took place), then get into something else. I will single out the introduction to the "base-rate fallacy" as another weak spot). A choice to be non-technical means that solutions to some problems cannot be effectively presented - although sometimes they are suggested after all. The "woefully complete" part of the title is, I take it, tongue-in-cheek, so no quibbles there.A few "similar" books come to mind, including (a) the drier "Common errors in statistics" by Phillip Good, (b) the three terrific popular books by Ben Goldacre - "Bad science", "Bad pharma" and "I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that" - and (c) the elegant "Understanding the new statistics" by Geoff Cumming. (I have not seen "How to lie with statistics" by Huff and Geis). Reinhart's book is more "big-picture" than Good's, and broader than Goldacre's or Cumming's. (The latter is a perfect "single-issue" book; the former are not specifically about cataloging statistics errors).Statistical semi-literacy of empirical researchers is a serious problem, and any effort to improve the situation is to be lauded. Alex Reinhart's book - engagingly written, and nicely produced (and fairly cheaply sold) by No Starch Press - is a force for good, and one which can have a material impact.PS. If you see any odd things in "Comments", that's probably the psycho who has spent days posting offensive comments to my reviews - only for them to be deleted by Amazon - after I criticized an iffy Packt book promoted with questionable five-star reviews. ("R Machine Learning By Example" by Bali and Sarkar, if you are wondering). As long as you know that his "Dimitri Shvorob" is fake, there isn't much harm he can do.

40 of 42 people found the following review helpful. A Primer on Doing Statistics Right By John Jacobson As the title suggests, this book is a diatribe against the misuse of statistics. While it is not a "complete" guide, it does discuss many the the errors that creep into studies published in even the most prestigious journals. Issues addressed include the use and misuse of "p" values, confidence intervals, an exploration of the meaning of "null hypothesis," power analysis, and the base rate fallacy.While each of these chapters illuminates "gotchas" that creep into statistical analysis, perhaps the most important part of the book looks at the choice of study populations. There is a brief description of many the biases that go unrecognized, including confirmation bias, publication bias, observer bias, and reporting bias. There is a checklist designed to help the researcher avoid creating a study population that is biased toward a particular result.The book closes with an appeal to improve the teaching of statistics. The lecture method of teaching is not effective, the author touts "peer instruction," an approach that is similar to a seminar rather than a ordered didactic lecture presentation. This is a worth while book for those interested in extracting the maximum value from their statistical analyses. It is written in an engaging manner, the case presentations are germane to the subject, and despite being an easy read, there is a great deal of solid material. Recommended!

Especially by Working Scientists but Understandable by All--Revealing By Ira Laefsky The author was an Undergraduate Physics major at the University of Texas, and subsequently became a Statistics Ph.D. student and Instructor at CMU after being surprised by the lack of Statistics knowledge and use of best practices by working scientists. I am a Computer Engineer and MBA with one basic course in Statistics acquired during my stay at the Wharton School 30 some years ago, and seeking a greater knowledge of Statistical Principles for work in Human Computer Interaction and Data Science in my present endeavors. I like the author am distressed by the lack of guidance received by professionals and working scientists in properly applying statistical methods to deciding the conclusions to be drawn from a research investigation. Mr. Reinhart properly points out that most individuals who have been exposed to statistics at all lack a fundamental understanding of such basic concepts as the P-Value--("the probability, under the assumption that there is ...no true difference, of collecting data that shows a difference equal to" or greater than that which you actually observed). The author emphasizes the importance of Statistical Power, the probability that a study "will distinguish an effect of a certain size from pure luck".Many Statistical and Logical Reasoning problems are shown by the author and papers he cites to exist in the work of Scientists, Medical Professionals and Psychologists. He presents an excellent set of recommendations of educational systems and for best practices in research in the last chapter entitled: "What Can Be Done". I highly recommend this humorous and thoroughly researched guide to anyone who must evaluate Business, Scientific or Professional Conclusions based upon Statistics.
