Great starter book for the budding Backyard Farmer By Louisiana Reader Backyard Farming: Fruit Trees, Berries and Nuts, is Kim Pezza's latest book in her Backyard Farming series. it is a great overview book to introduce potential backyard grower to growing Fruit trees, berries and nuts. The book combines some scientific details with practical guidance on how to plant and care for your plants. Kim Pezza also includes information on the most common diseases and problems for the respective plant/tree. The book is divided into 8 chapters. The chapters focus on the history of cultivating fruit trees, the basics, propagation, container growing (not everything takes a lot of space), growing: fruits, berries, nuts, and tropical varieties,and finally harvesting and preserving.Rather than just stay at the higher discussion level, Ms Pezza provides useful information on specific types of fruits, nuts and berries. She hits all the main varieties. She explains when to plant, prune, how to care for and finally how to harvest.The book is a great overview book. If you're looking to become a backyard gardener, Backyard Farming: Home Harvesting: Canning and Curing, Pickling and Preserving Vegetables, Fruits and Meats is a great book to start with.Now for the legal language: I won this book as part of the goodreads.com reader giveaway. that said, I'll probably buy more of her Backyard Farming series.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A lost classic By Stephen Balbach Dickens wrote 5 novella length Christmas Books, the most well known is the first `A Christmas Carol`. The third book, `The Cricket on the Hearth`, during the 19th century was as equally loved and popular as `A Christmas Carol`. Today it has largely been forgotten. What happened? The plot centers on a blind girl who is sadly heart broken when her plans for marriage are thwarted - this would have been a familiar and even desirable outcome for Victorian readers who believed disabilities were inherited and thus the disabled should be kept from marrying for the sake of any unfortunate offspring. Today this is obviously no longer correct and even seems heartlessly inexplicable to the modern reader - as a result the book has become something of a forgotten period piece. However it is still an excellent story and well worth reading for other reasons: the Dickens characters, the scenes, the feel good ending.Unlike most of Dickens novels, there have been only a few adaptions to screen and stage. The NBC radio play from 1945 is horrendously bad, the plot is mangled beyond recognition and at only 25 mins hardly captures anything of the original. There are two silent film versions, but as far as I can tell there are no modern film adaptations other than a 50-min 1967 cartoon version which has poor reviews and doesn't appear the follow the plot closely. There was a stage adaption called `Dot` (1857) that was very popular throughout the rest of the 19th century but it is also now obscure.`The Cricket` deserves more attention despite its failings, the theme of adultery is well done and surprisingly frank, I was really moved by Mr. Peerybingle's grief and his night in front of the fire with the pixies. The scenes in the toy shop are classic Dickens and the final party scene is emotionally uplifting. Until a serious video version is made, which corrects the handicap aspect, it will unfortunately languish in obscurity, read mostly by Dickens fans.The Kindle edition is fine, I recommend checking out the Wikipedia page which links to a picture gallery and first edition scans to see it in its original presentation of fonts and drawings.

I enjoyed the book immensely!The book company makes literature available in various print sizes. This print variations is a huge help! I can share great literature with family and friends that may need larger print. I even find it helpful for myself when my eyes are tired.I have purchased many books by this company through Amazon and have never been disappointed in their products!

The writing can be difficult to understand at times, but that was the language of the day. People had a misunderstanding and doubt with others that we still have today. I enjoyed the positive, cheerful ending.

Recovering the World of Ancient Slaves By Timothy B Smith The Material Life of Roman Slaves seeks to bring to the foreground the space in which Roman slaves lived and worked in order to better understand them. It offers useful insights and builds upon recent work by others to analyze the space and time of the ancient Roman context. I found it very much worth reading and reflecting upon. The authors also take on a crusading tone when it comes to decrying the neglect of scholars of the presence of slaves in the lives of the elite. They show how a careful reading of ancient sources and archaeological remains may uncover the experiences of Roman slaves.

About the Author Bill Nye is a scientist, engineer, comedian, and inventor. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University where he studied under Carl Sagan, and worked on the 747 as an engineer at Boeing before creating and hosting his much-loved Emmy award-winning PBS/Discovery Channel show "Bill Nye the Science Guy". He holds six Honorary Doctorate degrees from Lehigh University, Willamette University, Quinnipiac University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Goucher College, and Johns Hopkins, and teaches at Cornell regularly as a visiting professor.

17 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Underrated By Brian P. Why is Bill Nye so little known these days? I can't think of many authors, including Mark Twain, from the late 19th century whose books actually had me cracking up while reading it. His dry and subtle wit and sarcasm will have you in stitches. Another great gem is Nye and Riley's Wit and Humor, (or Poetry and Mirth), collaborated with James Whitcomb Riley. Good, funny stuff and wonderfully illustrated by artists such as Frederick Opper.

The book itself was ok, but I did feel like I was missing something by not having the illustrations, only their captions. For a bit of reading to pass the time this was ok.

By lyndonbrecht If you are interested in lightning, consider reading this book. It is largely cultural aspects (and one chapter is essentially a warning to get somewhere safe if lightning threatens). There is some science, but not much and it's entirely accessible. The illustrations are excellent all the way through, although how many spectacular lightning shots are needed to make the point? The writing is good throughout.I do have one sort of gripe. Chapter 1 is titled "Weapons of Gods and Goddesses" and Chapter 2 is titled "Fear of Lightning: Thunderbolts, Witchcraft and Protective Charms." These two comprise a quarter of the book and I think rather overdo the point. There is a sort of list of lightning gods continent by continent. There is interesting info: for long it was widely thought (in Europe, at least) that lightning striking the ground left stones, called thunderbolts, that were used to protect homes and people; these apparently were sometimes fossils and sometimes unrecognized ancient tools. There's a digression into fulgerites that suddenly appears, although it is interesting. There's also the--is it irony?--cultural habit once widespread of ringing church bells to ward off lightning, with a sizable casualty list of bell ringers. The witchcraft portion is interesting in its way. Executions for witchcraft in some numbers continues in some places even in the 21st century.Chapter 3 discusses the science and nature of lightning. I was intrigued to read that smoke from wildfires can create pyrocumulonimbus clouds capable of generating lightning, although rare. There's a brief discussion of ball lightning, and Elsom doesn't exactly say it does or does not exist, but there are credible reports and the controversy about it continues. Chapter 4 looks at lightning as threats to people and to activities. This is difficult to describe, but discusses how, for example, a person struck by lightning may survive if the bolt travels on the outside of the body or clothes. Elsom makes quite well the point that lightning is dangerous and go for safety when it threatens. Deaths are down in industrial countries as more people are inside away from storms, but death by lightning continues in places where people work outdoors (238 people killed by lightning in the US from 2006 to 2012). Lightning can also travel a long way and strike out of a clear sky under some circumstances. This chapter also discusses Franklin and others who studied lightning (remarkable that Franklin wasn't fried long before his days as American elder statesman), the invention of the lightning rod, and systems to make ships safe from lightning. The section on making commercial aircraft safe from lightning is a topic I would guess few readers are aware of.The last chapter considers lightning in literature, pop culture and the arts. Lightning can be used as a symbol of divine wrath or the power of nature, but also has become normative in any genre descended from Frankenstein. There is some interesting information in this chapter: some organs have a "storm effects" stop, and there are some interesting ways to make the sound of thunder for plays and music.

There are a couple of interesting tips for them.This very short (1.5h in my case) booklet will not bring you much illumination if you are familiar at least on a basic level with fintech.Book seems to have an objective of promoting the startup launched by the author of the book.
