Shann Ray Ferch is Professor of Leadership Studies at Gonzaga University and author of "Forgiveness and Power in the Age of Atrocity: Servant-Leadership as a Way of Life." He is also the editor of the "International Journal of Servant-Leadership."

The house is invaded by a starving burglar and a ragged raving woman. Odder still, these two down-and-outs are haunted by the ghost of the man who once lived there. Tom Ossington was a kind man in life, but in death he's developed a bit of a mean streak. He seems to be tormenting this pathetic pair of housebreakers - one his wife and one his former friend.On the other hand, Tom Ossington is no enemy of the young ladies renting his house. In fact, he may turn out to be their benefactor!I really liked the heroine of this novel. She's a bit of a New Woman - outspoken, strong-willed, smart, courageous, even handy with a gun! And the ghost has quite a bit of personality and a grim sense of humor. People tend to learn a lesson from their encounters with Tom, those who survive it.Tom Ossington's Ghost was published in 1898, a year after the Beetle. But this is Marsh in a completely different mood - humorous and entertaining. Tom Ossington's Ghost is a ghost story, a love story, and maybe tale with a moral. Very light, the sort of thing the Victorians read to relax.

An Intriguing Mystery That Warrants A Once Through, But Not Worth A Double Take By HandiHeather An intriguing mystery that warrants a once through, although not worth a double take. The original story was published in 1898 by Richard Bernard Heldmann under the name "Richard Marsh." This book is available for free as an e-book from Amazon, which is why I downloaded it.The first few chapters really spark your interest by introducing several characters in peculiar circumstances. We meet Graham a musical genius that uses the ploy of needing to take piano lessons to gain access to Clover Cottage in London, England. Also enters Lily, known as "The Ghost's Wife," and you cannot tell if she's mad or whether her memories are so vivid that she portrays them in such a way as if they seem to make the house come alive. Heldmann gives exquisite detail of Lily's clothing each time she is brought up throughout the book. It's quite beautiful, although he describes her clothing as gaudy and in serious disrepair.Madge the protagonist is continually portrayed as a strong female lead. This is surprising for the times, considering women were still playing passive roles in society and were not granted the right to vote until 1920. Madge has a keen sense, is clever at deduction, and extremely witty.As the book goes on your interest may start to wane, like mine did, with exception for a few scenes, especially as they start looking for the "lost fortune" of Tom Ossington. I can definitely appreciate the riddle that was presented for finding the treasure.The book rattles on with burglaries, lock outs, and death. The story is pretty predictable and the ending is not surprising. The book of course has turn of the century language and I had to look up the vocabulary on several occasions, which I found fascinating. If you do not have an interest in that sort of thing I would highly recommend you not wasting your time on downloading or attempting to read.

In his book The Humor Advantage, Michael Kerr says “Yes. You Can!”Michael Kerr, author and Hall of Fame speaker, makes the argument that cultures that nurture humor in the workplace will be more productive and more attractive to all-star employees. Kerr says that businesses with humor as a core value will have less conflict and stress. They will build trusting internal relationships, break down silos and facilitate more creativity and innovation.How does this happen inside a business? Kerr says that humor can change power relationships allowing employees to feel more secure and empowered. This will give people the foundation they need to make suggestions, show initiative and follow-up on ideas. Kerr has found that leaders in these effective businesses will be able to laugh at themselves and this makes them more approachable and open to new (and potentially profitable) ideas.What about the effect of humor on customers? In his latest book The Humor Advantage Kerr cites a number of studies that show customers are willing to pay more to salespersons who inject a little humor into their relationships and negotiations. One study cited showed that simply sending a funny, inoffensive cartoon to customers generated higher levels of trust and 15% larger profits. Kerr writes that any veteran salesperson knows that selling is about building relationships. We hire attitudes.” Kerr says that a supportive leader will recognize that humor is a healthy characteristic and, all things being equal, will hire for humor.Kerr’s position that humor in business can be profitable is persuasive. So, how can leaders go about developing this value in a systemic way?Kerr, who calls himself “a recovering manager”, says that leaders can be explicit about the important role of humor in their organizations. He also encourages leaders to bring their “personalities along for the ride”.Meetings are a fact of business life and, Kerr says, a great place for leaders to practice humor. Leaders could start meetings with ice-breakers and make sure that participants learn something about each other as individuals.Kerr also says that leaders should understand the importance of rituals and traditions. The lies are about substantial events and have significant consequences. Very broad sweep, spanning a period of several years, these characters wrestle with honor and duty at the time of Napoleon. The author renders a fast paced story about how lies (and everything else) have many unintended consequences, many of which cannot be undone. The book surprised me and in the end I was sorry to leave this era and these characters behind.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Very Entertaining By Gauffroi This is one of those rare books that I have read multiple times, and is enjoyable each time. It is not a soap opera, the characters are believable and you feel you know them well by the end of the book. It is an accurate portrayal of life in the Roman empire (and a much more accurate portrayal of emperor Commodus than the one in The Gladiator). Some readers may be put off by the early 20th Century prose style of the author because it is unfamiliar these days -- but the style is simply a bit more elaborate, causing descriptions to be more vivid. In all, an excellent read.

Historical Fiction: Always a Dilemma With Fact and Fiction By Squire Toad Well written, and I too enjoy the author's style (as described in the first review). However, given that this is fiction (e.g., no reference, no footnotes), I must wonder when he writes of certain things as if they were true. Example: wounds healing fine, and then becoming infected when "treated" by washing with clean water and then "anointing" with olive oil. Is this likely? And then the slave Agathemer bringing along his flageolet. The flageolet is a sort of flute, according to its Wiki entry invented in the 16th Century and NOT in the 2d Century AD. Never the less, it's a very good read, especially if one has an interest in the Roman civilization during this (or any other) period.

By Diana Wilder ...and that's just the first third of this story. This book was published in the early 20th century. My father read it after his Latin teacher recommended it. Years later he tracked it down and told me to read it. I loved it.This is a very long book. In this age where novels are now 50,000 words (!) this one weighs in at probably five times that amount. Possibly more. I read it all, though I admit I skipped parts that didn't hold my interest (do people do that any more?)Now it's available for kindle, I'm glad to have it.

About the Author Fabio Chaddad is associate professor of agricultural economics at the University of Missouri, USA with joint appointment at Insper Institute of Education and Research in São Paulo, Brazil. He currently teaches strategic management, organizational economics and agribusiness management at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He is also affiliated with the Graduate Institute of Cooperative Leadership (GICL), which delivers executive education programs for cooperative leaders, and the McQuinn Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, which supports research, teaching, curriculum development, and outreach in agricultural entrepreneurship. Fabio’s research activities focus on the economics and management of user-owned and controlled organizations and inter-firm collaborative arrangements in the global agrifood system. He has a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Missouri, a Master’s degree in Agribusiness Management from the University of São Paulo College of Economics, Business and Accounting and a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from the University of São Paulo College of Agriculture.

Guiding you (and your pets) safely through the dangers of winter By Tim MacWelch For those who have commented on our antifreeze tip - I thank you so much for your concern for the environment and our companion animals. I know for a fact that everyone involved in the production of this book loves their pets (and yours too), and we want every one of them to be safe and happy. The section that seems to be creating confusion for a few people is a section on leaving your home vacant and without heat for the winter. There I recommend using antifreeze or rubbing alcohol in the toilet to keep it from freezing and shattering. I stand by my statement, as my family has used this trick successfully for years. It's important to note that there are several brands of pet-safe and environmentally safe antifreeze on the market. Additionally, the book was very clear that this technique is for an unoccupied home - so no pets should have access to these treated toilets. Since this book was written with the intention of safely guiding you through winter, it would be beneficial for readers to hear how the book fared as a survival guide and rated accordingly.Thanks - the author.
