About the Author Steve Nadis is a graduate of Hampshire College and a Contributing Editor to Astronomy and Discover magazines. He has written or contributed to more than two dozen books, including The Shape of Inner Space and A History in Sum (which were also written with Shing-Tung Yau). Nadis has served as a staff researcher at the Union of Concerned Scientists, a science journalism fellow at MIT, and a consultant to the World Resources Institute, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Harvard Mathematics and Physics Departments, and WGBH/NOVA. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Shing-Tung Yau is the William Caspar Graustein Professor of Mathematics and Professor of Physics at Harvard University, where he has served on the faculty since 1987. He is the winner of the Fields Medal, the National Medal of Science, the Crafoord Prize, the Veblen Prize, the Wolf Prize, and a MacArthur Fellowship. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, Yau has received honorary degrees from ten universities. He is also the director of six mathematical institutes in China. Yau has written and edited more than twenty books and is the editor of numerous mathematics journals. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

By Amazon Customer This is a well-written account of the physics of particle accelerators -- both how they are built and what they do. It centers around the ambitious Chinese proposal to build a ``Great Collider'' with capabilities far beyond those of any existing machine. If this proposal goes ahead, China will gain leadership in particle physics for quite some time to come.S.-T. Yau is a highly distinguished mathematician who is interested in physics, as he explains in the preface, because of the way it sometimes sheds light on the mathematics that he does and sometimes supplies an unexpected arena in which this mathematics can be applied. (Steve Nadis is a writer and has collaborated with Yau on several books.) As Yau further explains in the preface, to maintain the vitality of physics requires fresh input from experiment. From this, as well as a passion for the scientific development of China, comes his interest in the Great Collider.

Nadis and Yau lead the reader through the history of particle physics, the incredible machines that have been built to expand our understanding of the universe, and even more magnificent instruments being planned. The authors do not shy away from the details of subatomic particles, and do so in an engaging fashion that is accessible to interested laypeople. The breadth of understanding of this vast field, and the ability to describe it coherently are impressive. The style is clear and direct, with gentle wit, and with reverence for the international group scientists who have contributed to this great endeavor.

It weaves together a general history of particle physics with an accessible discussion of the science. Now I actually know what the Higgs boson is and why its discovery was such a big deal. I also have a much clearer understanding of topics like dark matter and antimatter. The most amazing part was that the book was such a pleasure to read, even for non-scientist like me. Every time I put it down, I couldn’t wait to get back to it. Thanks, Steve Nadis and Shing-Tung Yau!

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

The Best Mystery Write EVER By Patricia Harrelson I read this on the recommendation of my 14 year old grandson who claims Chesterton is the best mystery writer EVER! My grandson just might be right. Clearly Chesterton is a highly intelligent story-crafter. This collection of short stories about Father Brown kept me awake and alert and ALWAYS surprised regarding the outcome. There was nothing formulaic or predictable in these stories. Father Brown is delightful in a Columbo fashion (perhaps the TV detective was modeled after him), and his sleuthing is remarkably unique. I loved Chesterton's use of language too. His sentences are long and luscious and his vocabulary makes reading a delicious experience. I must say, I'm quite happy to know that a 14 year old finds Chesterton so exceptional.

Worley The 12 stories herein can of course be found in THE COMPLETE FATHER BROWN, and THE ANNOTATED INNOCENCE OF FATHER BROWN. This is the first Brown collection, which introduces not only Father Brown himself but Flambeau, the daring thief. Father Brown worked on Flambeau during their early confrontations, and eventually persuaded him to give up his life of crime. He became Father Brown's friend and sometime sidekick, and appears in three-quarters of the stories herein, in one capacity or another."The Blue Cross" - The great detective Valentin knows that Flambeau the thief has selected a little English priest as his target, since the priest has been entrusted with a valuable cross set with sapphires. But when Valentin begins tracking the priest across the city, a very odd pattern of incidents begins to emerge."The Secret Garden" - Father Brown is a dinner guest in Valentin's home."The Queer Feet" - 'The Twelve True Fishermen', meeting for their annual fish dinner at a small, exclusive restaurant, saw the usual count of waiters - but one had died hours before! Father Brown (called in earlier for the waiter's dying confession and last rites) unravels a spectacular caper."The Flying Stars" - Flambeau's last crime (as noted in the 1st paragraph of the story), cited as an example of his love of artistically matching settings with crimes. His confrontation with Father Brown resonates nicely with the preceding story's metaphor of Brown having him on a line like a fish."The Invisible Man" - Locked-room mystery. The inventor was found murdered in his flat, but witnesses say that nobody could have gone past them without being seen."The Honour of Israel Gow" - This story actually takes place *after* "The Wrong Shape". The Earl of Glengyle was a hermit - and after finding some very odd circumstances in the Earl's home after his death, Flambeau and Father Brown begin to fear that Satanism is involved."The Wrong Shape" - The writer was a bad husband and an unpleasant man, and the beautifully penned suicide note seemed almost too good to be true."The Sins of Prince Saradine" - Flambeau takes Father Brown along to collect on the prince's invitation, sent to him during his criminal career, to visit if he were to become respectable, since he greatly admired Flambeau's stunt of once arranging for one policeman to arrest another, when both were looking for *him*."The Hammer of God" - The last two Bohuns are the curate, who pursues the beauty of his church, and the colonel, who chases women. But if he managed to catch the blacksmith's wife, it may well have been the death of him."The Eye of Apollo" - Locked-room mystery. Father Brown came to visit Flambeau, who has taken an office in a new building. 16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful collection of stories By Axver G. K. Chesterton had a writing ability that is nothing short of extraordinary. He could craft landscapes, settings, and locations with vivid textures, and possessed a cunning knack that made the ordinary seem thoroughly outlandish and the peculiar rather tame. This collection of short mysteries aptly shows off his skill as a writer; whereas most authors would use an entire novel to build tension, cultivate atmosphere, and weave a complex mystery, Chesterton could do all that in a few brief pages - and at a much higher level of quality too! Reading this book is like reading twelve beautifully crafted novels in one, such is the quality.I won't spoil the stories for you; reading this book is a rewarding journey for the imagination, meeting many characters fantastic in their normalcy or surprisingly believable and realistic in their peculiarity, visiting locations stunningly brought to life with a writing skill that is second to none, and delving into mysterious events that are often confusing, complex, and entertaining for the brain. Don't pick this book up if you want some pedestrian tales; pick it up if you want first-class storytelling that will keep you both guessing and thinking.

Mr. Oliver is an old man whose hasty words years ago had driven away his only surviving child. His health and faculties are deteriorating, but when he finds a precious little girl abandoned outside his shop, he is more than willing to take her in. When he finds the note in her pocket identifying her as his granddaughter, he is anxious to do what he can for her, and is delighted at the thought of being reconciled with his daughter.Tony is an orphan who has been living wherever he can, and was captivated by Dolly, Mr. Oliver's granddaughter, when he saw her outside the shop. Even though he had nothing of his own, he volunteered to take care of her if Mr. Oliver should refuse to take her. Mr. Oliver gave him a place to sleep under a counter in his tiny shop, and Tony came every day to see little Dolly. He noticed that Mr. Oliver's eyesight and memory was failing, and he began to help him get his shop going in the morning, and remind him of necessary things. He especially liked to hear Mr. Oliver tell of his Master, the Lord Jesus. Tony had never heard of such a wonderful employer, and wondered if he could work for him sometime. When Mr. Oliver's sister came to visit, she was appalled that her grandniece was associating with a barefoot beggar, and sent Tony away, and he was alone in London again. We follow his fortunes, and see the workings of his heart, all in the care of the Lord Jesus Christ.The reader will be touched by the poignancy of the love these characters share for each other, and inspired by the simple devotion of Mr. Oliver to his Master. Hesba Stretton has written of similar situations and conditions to those of Charles Dickens, but while his works are dark and depressing, hers are serious, yet bright with hope. When Mr. Oliver takes his dying Dolly to the charity children's hospital, and is told there is no room for her, he cries, "Dear Lord, there's room for only seventy-five of Thy little lambs that are pining and wasting away in every dark street and alley like mine. Whatever can Thy people be thinking about? They've got their own dear little children, who are ill sometimes, spite of all their care. They can send for the doctor, and do all that's possible, never looking at the money it costs. But when they are well again they never think of the poor little ones who are sick and dying, with nobody to help them or care for them as I care for this little one. Oh, Lord, Lord! Let my little love live! Yet Thou knows what is best, and Thou'lt do what is best. Thou loves her more than I do."A book for young and old, this will touch the reader's heart, and may change his life.

Boden I am so glad this book has been reprinted so that many more people can have the joy of reading it.I read this book when I was a child. It belonged to my immigrant grandmother. I never forgot the experience, although the details of the book escaped my memory. I remembered that it touched my heart in an eternal way.As an adult, I was given the book as a gift from my brother, who found an out-of-print copy. As soon as I saw the color of the cover of the book, I knew instantly that it was THAT book! I opened up the book and read a short paragraph that brought tears to my eyes and answers to the question of why this book had such a life changing impact on my life. The book was a divinely positioned gift given to me, not just once in my life, but twice.I highly recommend the book to any child or adult who needs to hear a timeless story of love.

By Oldies Fan A beautiful and touching story about human kindness and love without any expectation of a reward. I would recommend it to anyone who, like me, still enjoys a story which doesn't concentrate, like so many of them today, on everything base and awful in mankind. I could not put my kindle down until I had finished reading it, late into the night. Originally published in 1912, Lonesome Land is an extraordinary novel, perhaps Bower’s best. She was decades ahead of her time in taking on the subjects of divorce and spouse abuse. Pam Houston is the author of Cowboys Are My Weakness: Stories, winner of the 1993 Western States Book Award. She lives in Colorado near the headwaters of the Rio Grande.

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Lonesome Land haunts By A Customer I read this book over twenty-five years ago in my mother's collection of books that she bought as a young adult. Of all my mother's books, this one remains a vivid impression. Val gains depths the reader would not expect from the first shallow impression. Her husband's alcoholism and moral weakness are hard subjects for the early-century audience that Bower handles with a verity not often encountered. Yet my deepest etched memory is the love between Val and the hard-working honest cowboy she shuns at the first; he is impressed by her bravery alone in the cabin and her willingness to work hard to make a home in a shack when she expected a solid house, he wants to help her, he watches her struggle and transform, he realizes her husband is not worthy of her and he wants her for himself. Eventually he loves her with the kind of love she needs. This I remember to this day. The unexpected knight who replaces the prince of soft gold; the princess who realizes the difference between glitter and iron. These archetypes B.M. Bower worked with long before "archetypes" became a catch-word. She was writing good stories, better than good stories, and she deserves to remain in print based on this book alone. (Although the later Flying U book about the young man who goes to the rodeo to prove he's as much of a hero as his "wild west" father and uncles were is also as good).

You are left with no conclusions to any of the story lines in this book. I was very disappointed that the book was just stopped like everything was wrapped up. It was not and to be left hanging with no conclusion is a perfect example of bad writing. I have read several books by this author and this is by far the worst one I have read. If you want to read a really good book by this author, read Chip Of The Flying U. That book was the reason I started reading this author.

Bower writes fun western adventures, usually, but not always, involving a young man and woman who fall in love amongst the savage splendor of life in the west. This book follows that pattern, beginning with the arrival of a young woman to a small town in order to marry her childhood sweetheart, who has moved west to start a ranch. During the intervening years, however, he has changed, and while coping with the hard, lonely life of a small ranch, the new wife must learn to cope with loneliness and disappointment. One of her few contacts with the outside world is a friend of her husband's whom she despises. Their relationship gradually changes as her husband's true character is slowly revealed to her. I truly enjoy Bower's novels, and Lonesome Land was a pleasure to read. It is tempting to give all of her books 5 stars, but some are definitely better than others.

The behavior of the Californian is a case in point.However, the behavior of governmental and regulatory authorities is covered in some detail, which is invaluable in understanding why the Titanic carried so few lifeboats.All in all, this report is worthwhile as a step for anyone seeking pertinent information, yet it is neither exhaustive or definitive. Perhaps it is best understood as a document of specific focus, the route of the ship, the decisions of her captain, the behavior of her crew, the integrity of her construction are where this report shines.The enormity of the Titanic disaster continues to haunt us to this day, continues to leave us with an unsatisfactory collection of facts, and continues to defy our attempts to put it to rest. Seen in this light, the British government report is a reflection of this state.

A good sea-story read By Andrew Ellis Marryat seems a bit quaint by modern standards, but the writing, grammar and punctuation are much better than in many modern books. "Poor Jack" seems a bit melodramatic, but the book is still a good read. Free, since it's in public domain.

The Adventures of Robin Hood, by Howard Pyle

About the Author Howard Pyle (1853-1911) was an American illustrator and writer, primarily of books for young audiences. A native of Wilmington, Delaware, he spent the last year of his life in Florence, Italy. In 1894 he began teaching illustration at the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry (now Drexel University), and after 1900 he founded his own school of art and illustration called the Howard Pyle School of Illustration Art. The term the Brandywine School was later applied to the illustration artists and Wyeth family artists of the Brandywine region by Pitz (later called the Brandywine School). Some of his more famous students were Olive Rush, N. C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, Elenore Abbott, Ellen Bernard Thompson Pyle, Allen Tupper True, and Jessie Willcox Smith. His 1883 classic The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood remains in print to this day, and his other books, frequently with medieval European settings, include a four-volume set on King Arthur that cemented his reputation. He wrote an original work, Otto of the Silver Hand, in 1888. He also illustrated historical and adventure stories for periodicals such as Harper's Weekly and St. Nicholas Magazine. His Men of Iron was made into a movie in 1954, The Black Shield of Falworth. Pyle travelled to Florence, Italy to study mural painting in 1910, and died there in 1911 of sudden kidney infection (Bright's Disease).

(Referring to Kindle edition).Howard Pyle was the first person in the modern era to collect all the Robin Hood ballads that had come down from the midieval era and put them into a modern format, structured as stories and so forth. Essentially every version of Robin Hood in the past century has drawn on Howard Pyle's Robin Hood as its major source, and reading this book is the best way to understand why the minor characters in (for example) Kevin Costner's "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves" are named things like "Will Scarlet" or "Much the Miller's Son."I was given this book to read as a child, and it was and still is one of my all-time favorites (although I always avoided reading the final chapter, which is sad enough that Pyle even warns his readers about it). The elevated, pseudo-elizabethan style even helped me later on -- when I got to Shakespeare in school, the language was easy for me, because I'd been reading Howard Pyle since I was eight.The problem with this ebook version is that it doesn't contain the illustrations, though. And that's simply unforgivable. Howard Pyle is today better known as an illustrator than as a writer. He was the art teacher who taught people like Arthur Rackham and N.C. Wyeth. His illustrations are immensely rich and detailed, and as full of period accuracy and background research as his writing was. It's an unforgivable shame to miss them.Versions of this book can be found online free with illustrations. Don't bother with this version, as it doesn't have them. Reading this book without the illustrations is like taking an oscar-winning film and just listening to the sound with the screen blacked out. You can do it, but why?

This Traditional Literature was written by Howard Pyle. This book is full of action packed adventure. In this book is about an outlaw named Robin Hood that lives in Sherwood Forest. Robin Hood and his merry band of men are very helpful by stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. The sheriff of Nottingham doesn't appreciate Robin Hood's good will. Will they achieve? I think this is a great book because they meet new people, the definitions of Robin is very descriptive. I also think this is a great book is because at one of my family reunion's I saw it at the kid table. I could not put it down. I think this book is great book for people who like action and adventure. This book is for kids and adults of all ages.

The Adventure of a Lifetime By A Customer The Adventure of a Lifetime If you like stories full of action and adventure, then Robin Hood is the book for you! This is a classic book about an archer named Robin Hood who fights against the evil Prince John. The Adventures of Robin Hood begins with the King of England getting captured, and the King's brother taking over the rule of England. The King's brother, Prince John, is a greedy, cowardly, and evil man, but he is now the ruler of England. When Robin Hood finds out that Prince John has been put in charge, he gets angry. Prince John makes the people in the small town of Nottingham pay very high taxes, even though they are very poor. This angers Robin Hood who leads his gang of followers to steal from the rich and give to the poor, to help the poor people of Nottingham. Along the way, one of Robin Hood's friends, Will Scarlet, gets captured, so Robin Hood and the rest of his gang must come to his rescue. This is only one of the exciting events that happens in "Robin Hood". If I were to rank The Adventures of Robin Hood on a scale of 1 of 5, I would give it a 4 ½. Some good things about this book are that it has lots of action and adventure which is my favorite characteristic in a book. An example of this in the book is when Robin Hood and his gang have to rescue Will Scarlet. Another good characteristic of this book, if you like dramatic books, is that there is a love story between Robin Hood and his love, Lady Marian. This book is also quite educational, because it teaches you a lot about the medieval times, the time-period in which this book takes place. The reason that I took the half point off in my ranking of the book is because I found some of the dialogue to be quite confusing. The book takes place in medieval England, and their language is a bit different from modern day language, so that is why I think some of the dialogue is confusing. The protagonist in my book is Robin Hood. In the book, Robin Hood shows us two personalities of his. One personality of his is seen when he is around his best friend, Little John. When he is around Little John, he is laid-back and funny. The other personality comes out when he is leading his group of rebels. When he leads them, some characteristics that he portrays are leadership, intelligence, and aggressiveness. When he shows us the characteristic of aggressiveness, he is on the battlefield, or just fighting off some of Prince John's servants. Robin Hood has many unique characteristics about him. One of them is one that he is famous for, his skill with a bow and arrow. This skill comes into use when fighting off troops of Prince John. Another unique characteristic of Robin Hood is that he is a crook, with good intentions. That is unique because most crooks steal because they are greedy and want everything for themselves, but Robin Hood steals from the rich, and gives it all to the poor, and keeps nothing for himself. One more unique characteristic about Robin Hood is that he is a leader, and he still finds time for a few laughs with Little John, dispite all of the hardships that they must go through in order to help the poor citizens of Nottingham. There are two scenes in Robin Hood that make it an exceptionally good book. One of them is the scene where Robin Hood and his gang rescue Will Scarlet from Prince John. This scene means a lot to the book because it is possibly the best action part of the book. Another thing in the book that I thought was very meaningful was all of the parts in the book where Robin Hood and Little John spend time together, because all of those scenes portray their friendship. It is important in a book to teach about friendship. I think that The Adventures of Robin Hood is a magnificent book, and I would give it a 4 1/2 out of 5 as an overall rating. I would recommend this book to anybody that likes adventure books, particularly people from the ages of 9-15.

Park This book suggests blogging, starting youtube channel, niche website, writing e-books and such as the passive income ideas. How do these even qualify as passive income? Creating contents for all of these ideas and consistently updating them need substantial amount of work and effort. The writer even suggests updating three times a week for the blog idea. Now, that sounds more like a part time job than a passive income source to me.I am glad I was able to read this book for free using Kindle Unlimited trial. Otherwise, this book would have been waste of money.

I saw some early success with different avenues for making money but those eventually dried up and the landscape changes so rapidly that I was soon scratching my head and wondering what to do next. It became exhausting scrambling every month to make ends meet and some form of passive income sounded pretty attractive. Author Natalie Hall has an excellent guide here on different forms of online passive income, many of which I have not pursued. I have been a blogger, if only a half-hearted one, for years but now want to re-visit this platform. Her knowledge and depth of information given for each of the ways to make money online was impressive and it is clear that she has a great deal of experience and success in these areas. For those of us on the lookout for passive income streams, this book will come incredibly handy. Very well researched and presented in a way that is both easy to grasp and informative. I am eager to increase my internet marketing and income earning skills and this book has boosted my confidence a great deal.This was a very well organized and credible book that I am referencing daily.

I admit that I even did not know Nero had I not read this book.This book opens my eyes into Roman history. Although I would like to know that history I have no way to begin because I do not know from where to begin.In this view, this book provides a starting point to learn the Roman history. Anyone, who is interested in the Roman history, would begin from this point if he as me knows little about Romans. By the way, I have read several books authored by Abbott, and I really like his books.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. The Secret Plot..... By B. Morse I eagerly purchased this book after reading the description on the back. It purported to be Walpole's 'masterpiece' according to the Daily Telegraph, and apparently was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction in 1919.Set at the time of the Russian revolution (for clarity, the second one, not the first) I spent the entire 446 pages waiting for something, anything, to grab me as either a plot, or a central thread, or even a connection really as to what this book was about.Divided into three sections, the book follows many lives intertwined by different arrivals in Petrograd, Russia, and a family already living there. There is vague mention of a 'monster sighting' beneath a frozen river....there is political intrigue...there is a love story...and there is the revolution. But sadly, none of these themes ever emerges victorious over the others in captivating a reader's interest, at least this reader, and by the end of the tale you are left wondering what you just read.There are far better portraits of revolutionary Russia, pre-, during, and post-, written by native authors. I highly recommend their works over this one, as it never fully hit the mark, and having recently read my first Tolstoy, I was far more convinced of the landscape painted by him than I was by Walpole's.Other novels by the same author sound intriguing, but this is, in my humble opinion, not one to get very excited about. His writing style is good, his characters are realistic, but his story overall left me quite flat, as I was never quite able to determine what it really was.

Secret City worth the Struggle By Book Dame This is a book that needs to be really read, if you are looking for light entertainment, it's probably not going to do it for you. There are many layers to this onion, and it takes a dedicated reader to find its gems. It's worth the read just to evolve, as the characters do, into a more understanding person of those different from us.

An American Classic on the Nature of Trust By Charles Hugh Smith Why read a book from 1857 which flopped so badly as commercial literature that Melville stopped writing and ended his career as a customs official? Because this book masterfully explores the entire nature of trust, confidence and cons. Though the setting is a riverboat on the Mississippi River just before the U.S. exploded into Civil War, its insights cross cultural boundaries.This is not an easy book to read for several reasons. First, it is undoubtedly one of the first "post-modern" novels which breaks from traditional narrative storytelling. ( Another example: Dostoevsky's Notes From the Underground.) The Confidence-Man is a collection of 45 conversations between various people on the riverboat--beggars, absurdly dressed frontiersmen, sickly misers, shysters, patent medicine hucksters, veterans (of the Mexican-American War) and the "hero" in the latter part of the book, the Cosmopolitan.In typical Melville fashion, you also get asides--directly to the reader, in several cases, as if Melville felt the need to address issues of fiction outside the actual form of his novel. The lack of structure, action and conclusion make this a post-modern type book, but if you read each conversation as a separate story, then it starts to make more sense.For what ties the book together is not a story but a theme: the nature of trust and confidence. In a very sly way, Melville shows how a variety of cons are worked, as the absolutely distrustful are slowly but surely convinced to do exactly what they vowed not to do: buy the "herbal" patent medicine, buy shares in a bogus stock venture, or donate cash to a suspect "charity."In other chapters, it seems like the con artist is either stopped in his tracks or is conned himself. Since the book is mostly conversations, we are left to our own conclusions; there is no authorial voice wrapping up each chapter with a neatly stated ending. This elliptical structure conveys the ambiguous nature of trust; we don't want to be taken, but confidence is also necessary for any business to be transacted. To trust no one is to be entirely isolated.Melville also raises the question: is it always a bad thing to be conned? The sickly man seems to be improved by his purchase of the worthless herbal remedy, and the donor conned out of his cash for the bogus charity also seems to feel better about himself and life. The ornery frontiersman who's been conned by lazy helpers softens up enough to trust the smooth-talking employment agency owner. Is that a terrible thing, to trust despite a history of being burned?The ambuiguous nature of the bonds of trust is also explored. We think the Cosmopolitan is a con-man, but when he convinces a fellow passenger to part with a heavy sum, he returns it, just to prove a point. Is that a continuance of the con, or is he actually trustworthy?The book is also an exploration of a peculiarly American task: sorting out who to trust in a multicultural non-traditional society of highly diverse and highly mobile citizens. In a traditional society, things operate in rote ways; young people follow in their parents' traditional roles, money is made and lent according to unchanging standards, and faith/tradition guides transactions such as marriage and business along well-worn pathways.But in America, none of this structure is available. Even in Melville's day, America was a polyglot culture on the move; you had to decide who to trust based on their dress, manner and speech/pitch. The con, of course, works on precisely this necessity to rely on one's senses and rationality rather than a traditional network of trusted people and methods. So the con man dresses well and has a good story, and an answer for every doubt.The second reason why Melville is hard to read is his long, leisurely, clause upon clause sentences. But the book is also peppered with his sly humor, which sneaks up on you... well, just like a good con.

Connor Quite an OriginalThe Confidence-Man: His MasqueradeI am specifically reviewing the Northwestern University Press edition of Melville's "The Confidence-Man: His Masquerade."There is a Norton Critical Edition of this novel edited by Hershel Parker, but it doesn't seem to be offered by Amazon.com. It is offered at at W.W. Norton's website... The Hendricks House edition edited by Elizabeth Foster is another good edition, but it seems to be out of print at the moment.On November 12, 1856 Herman Melville and Nathanial Hawthorne took a walk among the sandhills near Liverpool, England. They smoked cigars, and Hawthorne wrote about a week later that Melville spoke of Providence and futurity, and he, Melville, had pretty much made up his mind to be annilated."The Confidence-Man" is the last novel that Melville published during his lifetime. I agree with Newton Arvin, who called "The Confidence-Man" "one of the most infidel books ever written by an American; one of the most completely nihilistic, morally and metaphysically."About 150 years after the book was first published, and about fifty since the book was first taken seriously by literary critics, The Confidence-Man is not a settled matter. In fact there remains excessive discord among readers and critics about the worth of this novel. Some compare it to Swift's "Tale of the Tub," others will tell you that this book is static and formless.The idea is simple enough. On April 1 a devil in the guise of a deaf mute goes aboard a Mississippi river steamboat, and begs for charity. In rapid succession he transforms himself into a crippled Black man, a man with the weed, the man in the grey coat , the gentleman with the big book, the man with the plate and finally the Cosmopolitan. In these different guises he gulls and diddles people. He asks for trust. He is not always successful, but he can take solace in his failures. The reason for the devil's failures is the cyniscim, mistrust and mysandry of his marks. It is their human failings that accounts for his failures. And that's not so bad for the devil.Melville's control of his material was never greater. I recommend the Northwestern Newberry edition because it contains draft fragments of chapter 14. You can see how carefullly Melville wrote this novel. The blandness of the prose is deliberate. If you read the surviving drafts you will see how Melville purposedly silenced and muted his message. Perhaps Melville was too successful for even close readers get lost sometimes.At the end there is an increase of seriousness. An old man closes his Bible and asks for a life preserver. The Cosmopolitan hands the old man a chamberpot which appears to be full, and calls it a life preserver. The Cosmopolitan then extinguishes the lamp, and then leads the other into the darkness.
