Silver Pitchers and Independence, by Louisa May Alcott

About the Author American novelist Louisa May Alcott is best known for her classic coming-of-age novel Little Women, and its sequels Little Men and Jo s Boys. The daughter of noted transcendentalist and educator Amos Bronson Alcott and Abigail May Alcott, Alcott was an active abolitionist and feminist, and the first woman registered to vote in Concord, Massachusetts. Schooled mainly by her father, Alcott and her three sisters also received lessons from such notables as Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Margaret Fuller. Alcott penned her first book, Flower Fables, for Emerson s daughter, Ellen. Before gaining critical success for her children s fiction, Alcott wrote several passionate adult novels using the pen name A. M. Barnard, including A Long Fatal Love Chase and Punishment. Alcott s literary career spanned more than 40 years, and she wrote more than 30 books before her death in 1888.

Included in this volume are: "Silver Pitchers," the story of thee popular girls who take a stand against drinking by forming a temperance club; "Anna's Whim,"a love story; "Transcendental Wild Oats," the satire of her father's utopian experiment; "The Romance of a Summer's Day," the romance of a young lady seeking independence; " My Rococco Watch," an account of desire gone humorously wrong; "By The River: A Legend of the Assabet," a charming and fatalistic tale of a young poet; "Letty's Tramp," another charming tale of friendship and love; "Scarlet Stockings," a Civil War romance; and "Independence: A Centennial Love Story," which is precisely what the title suggest. Alcott wrote the stories in 1875, the Centennial year of American Revolution's beginning, and have a strong theme of independence within romantic love. "Silver Pitchers," is perhaps the most naive and maudlin from a 21st century perspective. I particularly enjoyed "By the River," "Scarlet Stockings," and "Independence." The stories in the collection possess Alcott's characteristic humor and realistic charm within a sentimental and moralistic story that is her trademark. This particular publication would have been more enjoyable to read if there had more visual definition between each of the stories and more generous spacing within the text.
