Review Praise for Dina Gachman“Dina weaves comic gold by exposing the revelatory moments and little humiliations of things everyone can relate to. By turns fun, funny and gut-punching, she keeps it light but isn't afraid to go in for the kill.” —Ransom Riggs, author, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and Hollow City“Dina Gachman has the amazing ability to make you actually want to listen to someone else’s money problems. You may not want to listen to a friend talk about her student loans, lack of job, or being on hold with the unemployment office, but somehow you’ll stick with Dina through all that and more.” —Eve Troeh, reporter, NPR Marketplace“Dina Gachman’s wry wit, perspective, and cultural knowledge give her writing a highly readable, fun, and easy to digest style.” —Eamon McNiff, producer, ABC's 20/20"Most people don’t like to talk about money, or their own failures. Thank goodness Dina Gachman does. Her very funny book is full of great practical advice for anyone struggling with money which, let’s be honest, is all of us.”—Dorothy Pomerantz, L.A. Bureau Chief, Forbes"Brokenomics is a wise, witty, and wonderful guide to living cheaply and well. Even the well-heeled should heed Dina Gachman’s excellent advice that you don’t have to spend wildly to have a great life. In the hours it took me to read her hilarious book, I didn’t spend a dime and laughed my butt off.”—Joseph D’Agnese, author of The Money Book for Freelancers, Part-Timers, and the Self-Employed"Dina’s writing is awesomely weird in the best way possible." —Jenny Lawson, author, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened"From unemployment to the business of TV, her stories are both smart and entertaining, which is not an easy balance to pull off.” —Dorothy Pomerantz, editor, Forbes

It was humorous in a offensive way but offered little real financial advice.Offensive. She went to a flea market with her mother where she noted the 300-400 lb people contemplating their leftover pork ribs and Dr. Pepper. Maybe 68% of LA is shallow, materialistic, annoying, flaky, narcissistic, money-hungry, celebrity wannabes? If your boss treats you like crap go ahead and steal from them ? Women selling their eggs, and a reference to one girl who had a personality being like a styrofoam cup ? It goes on and on, and I am not a fan of mean/stupid/drunk/selfish humor. Not a book I would recommend or buy.

Laugh-out-loud funny AND full of really useful perspective on money By Jo Mackness I was really surprised by the fact that this book could be both laugh-out-loud funny AND actually full of really useful perspective on money, as well as life in general. We all spend a lot of time concerning ourselves with "first world problems" and this is such a breath of down-to-earth fresh air. I normally have a harder time getting through non-fiction and I found this to be such a great read--lots of "that's happened to me" or "I cannot believe that happened to her... but maybe it could in LA" stories--such that I couldn't put it down. A terrific mix of humor and meaning.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Quite confused about what this book was really supposed to be about. Plenty of F bombs, irreverance, and putdowns By Sunshine on a Rainy Day SUMMARY: This is the story of Dina Gachman and many of the tricks she used through her life to survive without much money. Some of her tips include not buying Versace if you aren't a millionaire, take all the free samples you can get, steal toilet paper from work, don't have children--raise a plant instead, don't buy $5 coffees unless you really truly want them, and if it's your thing--get a sugar daddy to pay your way...the list goes on.THE GOOD: If you like irreverent humor with lots of F bombs and drinking stories, this book is for you.THE NOT AS GOOD: I felt like I was reading a book by a person still in college telling all the funny stories of things she has done and probably shouldn't have. The book was strewn with put downs against other people including Anne Hathaway (for looking beautiful and composed in a blizzard). There was lots of cussing and other vulgarity which is not my style. But most importantly, I did not find much good advice on frugality, responsible living or how to budget.I'll keep my two children and refrain from stealing TP to make it through the month thank you very much!
