By James Hobbs Around 1900 Bower started to write about the wild west - and she was one of a few women writers that 'wrote like a man' and fooled most of her readers at the time. But she knew what she was writing about, and grew up in the west, listened to all the tales, and wrote with a passion about the life, the men, the women, and the harsh conditions of the time. Not afraid to write about the violent times she is one of the best western writers ever, that this book is one of her finest - full of the stuff that we love in a western, fighting, fun, drinking, and gun-play!

I highly reccomend this to all that like genuine story telling spellbinding and fun to read. Especially liked the White Mule.

No alcoholic beverages allowed By Twostory This is a drawn-out story of one arrogant Mr. Casey Ryan who spent the whole book chasing around getting into trouble, fighting, bragging on himself and being generally abusive to anyone he happened upon. His slang language/accent was irritating. He left his wife routinely without telling her where he was for many days. He was the main character and I disliked him immensely. The setting is the Southern California desert during the prohibition era. He willingly got involved with moonshiners and transporting booze - but lucked out in the end by helping the authorities. I'd rather had seen him arrested for his earlier deeds. Although I didn't like the characters, the writing was good with descriptive scenes that places the reader at the scene.

"[...]things are thought of at most as places where moral notions need to be applied, not as places where moral ideas are to be studied and moral energies generated. In short, the severance of morals from human nature ends by driving morals inwards from the public open out-of-doors air and light of day into the obscurities and privacies of an inner life. The significance of the traditional discussion of free will is that it reflects precisely a separation of moral activity[...]".

Human Nature and Conduct, by John Dewey

From the Author In the spring of 1918 I was invited by Leland Stanford Junior University to give a series of three lectures upon the West Memorial Foundation. One of the topics included within the scope of the Foundation is Human Conduct and Destiny. This volume is the result, as, according to the terms of the Foundation, the lectures are to be published. The lectures as given have, however, been rewritten and considerably expanded. An Introduction and Conclusion have been added. The lectures should have been published within two years from delivery. Absence from the country rendered strict compliance difficult; and I am indebted to the authorities of the University for their indulgence in allowing an extension of time, as well as for so many courtesies received during the time when the lectures were given.

Perhaps the sub-title requires a word of explanation. The book does not purport to be a treatment of social psychology. But it seriously sets forth a belief that an understanding of habit and of different types of habit is the key to social psychology, while the operation of impulse and intelligence gives the key to individualized mental activity. But they are secondary to habit so that mind can be understood in the concrete only as a system of beliefs, desires and purposes which are formed in the interaction of biological aptitudes with a social environment. -- J.D., February, 1921

About the Author Susan Dewey is Assistant Professor of Gender & Women's Studies and adjunct in International Studies at the University of Wyoming. She is the author of "Making Miss India Miss World: Constructing Gender, Power, and the Nation in Postliberalization India" and "Hollow Bodies: Institutional Responses to Sex Trafficking in Armenia, Bosnia, and India".

One would think that a third-generation thinker from a school, in this case pragmatism, would run out of fresh new turns to take with the doctrine or stance. However, this is not so. Dewey’s objective, in this text, is to ground moral philosophy, just as Peirce and James sought to ground all sorts of other areas of philosophy, e.g., epistemology, science, conceptual meaning, etc. Dewey moves in a direction that builds off of his “Reconstruction of Philosophy,” particularly what he says in his chapter on ethics, and critiques both ends of the spectrum of rationalistic moral philosophers, who have thought morality inherently disconnected from human conduct, as though theorization precedes the human context. His critique, while ending at something similar to Nietzsche or Paine, critiques these sorts of positions, as well as the Kantian position of morality.Anyone familiar with Dewey in the least will know that his theory of human action, much like Peirce and James, begins with habit, thought Dewey’s is a much more physiological approach than psychological alone. He begins with the nerve, and develops an understanding of societal behavior from that, moving through the human habit, building a dual bottom-up/top-down view of morality and society as individual (and society as collective). In this book, he discusses his thought on free will, impulse, and intelligence, explaining how these ideas fit into a conduct-focused understanding of morality.Reading the book through for the first time, I don’t know how convincing it is, but I give it five stars on grounds of its creativity, freshness, and its ability to stimulate. I recommend this to all, especially those in education, ethics, and any sort of sociological/public-research domain dealing with relevant matters. As another reviewer said, it is an easily understood book, even though there is much depth to it, and so I think it is accessible to all reading levels. The edition I have read is the "Great Books in Philosophy" edition by Prometheus books, and I can say that, while the font is not the prettiest, the print is nice and large, and so I can recommend it as a readable edition.

THE INFLUENTIAL AMERICAN PHILOSOPHER AND EDUCATOR LOOKS AT MORALITY, AND CONDUCT By Steven H Propp John Dewey (1859-1952) was an American philosopher (best known as a Pragmatist), psychologist, and educational reformer whose ideas of “progressive education” have been very influential (as well as controversial, in some circles). He wrote many books, including Reconstruction in Philosophy, The Quest for Certainty, A Common Faith, etc.[NOTE: page numbers below refer to a 336-page hardcover edition.]He wrote in the Introduction to this 1929 book, “Man’s nature has been regarded with suspicion, with fear, with sour looks, sometimes with enthusiasm for its possibilities but only when these were placed in contrast with its actualities… Theologians have doubtless taken a gloomier view of man than have pagans and secularists. But this explanation doesn’t take us far. For after all these theologians are themselves human, and they would have been without influence if the human audience had not somehow responded to them.” (Pg. 1)He continues, “Morality is largely concerned with controlling human nature… moralists were led, perhaps, to think of human nature as evil because of its reluctance to yield to control… But this explanation raises another question: Why did morality set up rules so foreign to human nature? The ends it insisted upon, the regulations it imposed, were after all outgrowths of human nature. Why then was human nature so averse to them? Moreover rules can be obeyed and ideals realized only as they appeal to something in human nature and awaken in it an active response. Moral principles that exalt themselves by degrading human nature are in effect committing suicide. Or else they involve human nature in unending civil war, and treat it as a hopeless mess of contradictory forces.” (Pg. 1-2)He states, “One might as well suppose that the man who is a slave to whiskey-drinking is merely one who fails to drink water. Conditions have been formed for producing a bad result, and the bad result will occur as long as those conditions exist. They can no more be dismissed by a direct effort of will than the conditions which create drought can be dispelled by whistling for wind. It is as unreasonable to expect a fire to go out when it is ordered to stop burning… The fire can be put out only by changing objective conditions…” (Pg. 29)He suggests, “All life operates through a mechanism, and the higher the form of life the more complex, sure and flexible the mechanism. This fact alone should give save us from opposing life and mechanism, thereby reducing the latter to unintelligent automatism and the former to an aimless splurge… Mechanism is indispensable... Nevertheless the difference between the artist and the mere technician is unmistakable. The artist is a masterful technician. The technique or mechanism is fused with thought and feeling… We are confronted with two kinds of habit, intelligent and routine. All life has its élan, but only the prevalence of dead habits deflects life into mere elan.” (Pg. 70-71)He argues, “Why do this act if I feel like doing something else? Any moral question may reduce itself to this question if we so choose. But in an empirical sense the answer is simple. The authority of that of life. Why employ language, cultivate literature, acquire and develop science, sustain industry, and submit to the refinements of art? To ask these questions is equivalent to asking: Why live? And the only answer is that if one is going to live one must live a life of which these things form the substance. The only question having sense … is HOW we are going to use and be used by these things, not whether we are going to use them… In short, the choice is not between a moral authority outside custom and one within it. It is between adopting more or less intelligent and significant customs.” (Pg. 80-81)He points out, “The conservative who begs scientific support from the psychology of instincts is the victim of an outgrown psychology which derived its notion of instinct from an exaggeration of the fixity and certainty of the operation of instincts among the lower animals… He is ignorant that instincts in the animals are less infallible and definite than is supposed, and also that the human being differs from the lower animals in precisely the fact that his native activities lack the complex ready-made organization of the animals’ original abilities.” (Pg. 107)He notes, “The evil of checking impulses is not that they are checked. Without inhibition there is no instigation of imagination, no redirection into more discriminated and comprehensive activities. The evil resides in a refusal of direct attention which forces the impulse into disguise and concealment, until it enacts its own unavowed uneasy private life subject to no inspection and no control.” (Pg. 165-166)He points out, “Reason, the rational attitude, is the resulting disposition, not a ready-made antecedent which can be invoked at will and set into movement. The man who would intelligently cultivate intelligence will widen, not narrow, his life of strong impulses while aiming at their happy coincidence in operation.” (Pg. 196) Later, he adds, “We may indeed safely start from the assumption that impulse and habit, not thought, are the primary determinants of conduct. But the conclusion to be drawn from these facts is that the need is therefore the greater for cultivation of thought.” (Pg. 222)He proposes, “When a sense of the infinite reach of an act physically occurring in a small point of space and occupying a petty instant of times comes home to us, the MEANING of a present act is seen to be vast, immeasurable, unthinkable. This ideal is not a goal to be attained… It is the office of art and religion to evoke such appreciations and intimations; to enhance and steady them till they are wrought into the texture of our lives. Some philosophers define religious consciousness as beginning where moral and intellectual consciousness leave off… But they have falsified the connection by treating the religious consciousness as something that comes AFTER an experience in which striving, resolution and foresight are found… But there is a point in EVERY intelligent activity where effort ceases; where thought and doing fall back upon a course of events which effort and reflection cannot touch. There is a point in deliberate action where definite thought fades into the ineffable and undefinable---into emotion… The religious experience is a reality in so far as in the midst of effort to foresee and regulate future objects we are sustained and expanded in feebleness and failure by the sense of an enveloping whole. Peace in action not after it is the contribution of the ideal to conduct.” (Pg. 263-264)He acknowledges, “Is the conclusion to be drawn a conviction that our wider social interests are so different from those in which intelligence is a directing factor that in the former science must always remain a belated visitor coming upon the scene after matters are settled? No, the logical conclusion is that as yet we have no technique in important economic, political and international affairs. Complexities of conditions render the difficulties in the way of a development of a technique enormous. It is imaginable they will never be overcome. But our choice is between the development of a technique by which intelligence will become an intervening partner and a concealment of a regime of accident, waste, and distress.” (Pg. 276-277)He says, “To say that the welfare of others, like our own, consists in a widening and deepening of the perceptions that give activity its meaning, in an educative growth, is to set forth a proposition of political import. To ‘make others happy’ except through liberating their powers and engaging them in activities that enlarge the meaning of life is to harm them and to indulge ourselves under cover of exercising a special virtue.” (Pg. 293)He argues, “The question is not what are the antecedents of deliberation and choice, but what are their consequences. What do they do that is distinctive? The answer is that they give us all the control of future possibilities which is open to us. And this control is the crux of our freedom. Without it, we are pushed from behind. With it we walk in the light.” (Pg. 311) He adds, “We do not use the present to control the future. We use the foresight of the future to refine and expand present activity. In this use of desire, deliberation and choice, freedom is actualized.” (Pg. 313)This is one of Dewey’s most important works, and will be of keen interest to anyone studying his philosophy.

Nearly five billion years ago, Earth and Mars were born together as planetary siblings orbiting a young, emerging Sun. Yet today, one planet is water rich and life bearing, while the other is seemingly cold, dry, and forbidding.Earth and Mars is a fusion of art and science, a blend of images and essays celebrating the successful creation of our life-sustaining planet and the beauty and mystery of Mars. Through images of terrestrial landscapes and photographs selected from recent NASA and European Space Agency missions to Mars, Earth and Mars reveals the profound beauty resulting from the action of volcanism, wind, and water. The accompanying text provides a context for appreciating the role of these elemental forces in shaping the surfaces of each planet, as well as the divergent evolutionary paths that led to an Earth that is teeming with life, and Mars that is seemingly lifeless.Earth and Mars inspires reflection on the extraordinarily delicate balance of forces that has resulted in our good fortune: to be alive and sentient on a bountiful blue world.

Very good pictures and many of the Earth/Mars picture pairs are very thought provoking. The book is divided into four sections; Earth, Fire, Air and Water. There are scattered groupings of explanatory text but it's more about what the pictures make you feel than enything. The pair at about location 66 of 183 I swear I can hear water rippling. Amazing pictures and easy to read text. Worth every penny!

Fascinating read By CTargett I had a hard time with the first few chapters - a bit too much about war, but after that I was impressed that a woman at that period of time could capture the events so realistically that I even wonder should the current presidents be reading this book for information! This book is just as relevant today as it was 80 years ago

Times like ours were times like McClung's By A Customer Originally published in 1915, just after the start of the First World War, In Times Like These was one of McClung's early works. But reading the book 85 years later the reader might get a feeling of elation -- how far we have come, because women have the vote, after all! -- or deflation as we realize how far we still have to go. As McClung says, "The world has suffered long from too much masculinity and not enough humanity..."

Before you buy this edition, be forewarned that the editors have cut almost 20pp. from Chesterton's introduction, leaving a mere 2pp.

The Very Best Introduction to Dickens's Novels By Linda in Santa Cruz G.K.Chesterton is the best critic of Dickens, and these introductions to his novels his best work. If you are seeking an answer to why Dickens is so enduring, these short essays will answer you. If you are already a Dickensian, these essays are a delightful condensed expression of everything you already know. A pity that it is out of print. It is THE book I try to give to friends who want an introduction to Dickens.

He does a great job discussing Dickens as a man and author, as well as Dicken's works. If you're a Dickens fan, this is well worth reading.

42 of 45 people found the following review helpful. Important Read By John Arbuckle This is one of those books where you can get all the information contained therein from other sources. It is a difficult read in that it was written in the language of the 16th century. However, it is stunning. Follow the math which begins with geometry and evolves into calculus. Not as a learning progression but as a necessity. At times, Newton seems almost apologetic when establishing his scenarios and problems. Almost as if he knows you can't possibly understand his intent! This book, along with The Principia, ranks as one of the very first applications of the scientific method. With all due respect to Copernicus, Galileo and many others; Newton was THE intellectual giant of the Renaissance. We are all forever in his debt.

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. For the general idea By Stephenson A. Ohimor I wanted to get an idea of why Newton discovered/created the calculus framework. I was more interested in the problems he was trying to solve than the explicit descriptions of the math problems. The dated English is hard to decipher at times but its worth reading through at least once. Its a bit dry and a bit slow but it does something most present math books don't do; this book explains why.

14 of 16 people found the following review helpful. principia mathmatica By ismael I got this for my kindle, it is an awesome book. it is amazing the knowledge of mathematics Newton had. for the price it's gets five stars. the content five stars as well. if your liking for this book then you probably have some idea of how deep it is in terms of mathematical understanding. either way great book.

"[...]prose style. The essential difference between poetry and prose—"that other beauty of prose"—in the words of the motto he has chosen from Dryden, the first master of the sort of prose he prefers:—that is Mr. Saintsbury's burden. It is a consideration, undoubtedly, of great importance both for the writer and the critic; in England especially, where, although (as Mr. Saintsbury rightly points out, in correction of an imperfectly informed French critic of our literature) the radical distinction between poetry and prose has ever been recognized by its students, yet the imaginative impulse, which is perhaps the richest of our purely intellectual gifts, has been apt to invade the province of that tact and good judgment, alike as to matter and manner, in which we are not richer than other people. Great poetry and great prose, it might be found, have most of their qualities in common. But [5] their indispensable qualities are different, or even opposed; and it is just the indispensable qualities of prose and poetry respectively, which it is so necessary for those who have to do with either to bear ever in mind. Order, precision, directness, are the radical merits of prose thought; and it is more than merely legitimate that they should form the criterion of prose style, because within the scope of those qualities, according to Mr. Saintsbury, there is more than just the quiet, unpretending usefulness of the bare sermo pedestris. Acting on language,[...]".

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A short collection from a long time ago By Christopher (o.d.c.) Publication date: 1910CONTENTS 1. English Literature, 2. Amiel's "Journal Intime", 3. Browning, 4. "Robert Elsmere" 5. Their Majesties' Servants, 6. Wordsworth, 7. Mr. Gosse's Poems, 8. Ferdinand Fabre, 9. The "Contes" of M. Augustin Filon.I was surprised at myself, coming to the end of this short collection, to find that I had once rated it two stars. I must have been put off by the first essay, and by the unfamiliar names in the table of contents, because there are three or four essays of the nine which are well worth reading, mostly because Pater quotes extensively from the books he is reviewing. Here he quotes from Amiel's Journal and comments on it:"The relation of thought to action," he writes, "filled my mind on waking, and I found myself carried towards a bizarre formula, which seems to have something of the night still clinging about it. Action is but coarsened thought." That is but an ingenious metaphysical point, as he goes on to show. But, including in "action" that literary production in which the line of his own proper activity lay, he followed—followed often—that fastidious utterance to a cynical and pessimistic conclusion. The long discussion of the merits and demerits of ROBERT ELSEMERE builds up to this outspoken remark:Doubtless, it is part of the ideal of the Anglican Church that, under certain safeguards, it should find room for latitudinarians even among its clergy. Still, with these, as with all other genuine priests, it is the positive not the negative result that justifies the position. We have little patience with those liberal clergy who dwell on nothing else than the difficulties of faith and the propriety of concession to the opposite force."Their Majesties' Servants" is a review of a history of actors and the stage, and the anecdotes are marvelous:An angry word, passed one April evening of 1682 between the son of Sir Edward Dering and a hot-blooded young Welshman, led to recrimination and sword-drawing. The two young fellows not having elbow-room in the pit, clambered on to the stage, and fought there, to the greater comfort of the audience, and with a more excited fury on the part of the combatants. The mingling of the public with the players was a practice which so annoyed the haughty French actor, Baron, that to suggest to the audience the absurdity of it, he would turn his back on them for a whole act, and play to the audience on the stage.Pater reviews a few French authors who are hardly remembered today. His accounts of their novels and stories are quite detailed and illustrative.Walter Horatio Pater wrote more significant books than this slim collection of newspaper pieces, but it is a fine introduction to his style and often intrinsically interesting as well.

Alcat George Sand (1804-1876) was an excellent writer, and this book allows the reader to be certain of that. How? Well, in this book Sand takes a seemingly uninteresting subject and tells us a beautiful story about him."The devil's pool" (1846) is short, and it is likely to seem even shorter due to the fact that you will be caught up in the pastoral world that the author describes so well. The plot is simple, but effective, and revolves around a planned marriage, and love. However, I am certain you will also enjoy her beautiful metaphors, that for example make you wish you were able to watch a particular sunset. All in all, I think that the lesson here is that there is poetry and beauty in everything, we just need to be capable of seeing it, as Sand did. Recommended!Belen Alcat

15 of 18 people found the following review helpful. What would I think of myself .... By A. G. Plumb ..... if I couldn't fight off my sad thoughts? (p 48)I had a vague knowledge of George Sand before I read Belinda Jack's biography of her. In learning more about Sand I grew to admire the determined individual that she was. But I never really felt any liking for her - unlike, say, what I feel for Emma Goldman or Mary Shelley. Sand's novel 'Indiana' did excite me despite some of its melodramatic aspects. 'Mauprat' on the other hand, wasn't to my liking much at all. 'The Devil's Pool', however, is such a short novel - a novella really - that I was willing to give it a try. And I am so glad I did. This is a simple pastoral novel, but Victoria Glendinning's Foreword mislead me. I thought I was about to enter the rural world of W H Hudson ('A Shepherd's Life' or 'Idle Days in Patagonia'), which was not a bad prospect for me as I enjoy Hudson's writing a lot. But Sand is different altogether - this rural environment is gripping and tinged with horror and despair. Here's another quote:'..... everyone has a story (and everyone would be able to rouse interest in the novel of their own life, if they had really understood it.....)(p 15)Other recommended reading:'George Sand': Belinda Jack'Indiana': George Sand'Living my Life': Emma Goldman (she must have really understood it!)'A Crystal Age': W H Hudson (for a different type of pastoral world, but just as challenging)

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. One Of The Best Short Stories Ever Written By J.E.Robinson Previously my favorite short story or novella was Tolstoy's Master and Man. But this present work comes close to that. I found it on a list of great literature that Bloom has created. It is from Bloom's Democratic Period, 1832-1900. Among the French writers, Bloom selects this work as the best from George Sand.It is a three part story about a ploughman, Germain. He is a French farmer and he owns his own farm, so he is a man of substance. He is a good looking man in excellent health with three small children, but his wife has died. The story revolves around a trip that he makes to meet a new wife. A trip was arranged by his now deceased wife's inlaws, who are worried about Germain and the children, and then the subsequent marriage that follows on later. Sand manages to communicate a lot of the charm of rural French life to the reader while she tells the story. There are many twists and turns. The tale seems quite improbable at first, but then it becomes much more compelling as one reads on - more than might possibly imagine. It is a book that kept me up late until it was done. It is not a complicated story and there are few dramatic moments. Rather it is a simple but interesting story about a trip and a romance in rural France. The start and finishing parts are good, but it is a bit slow in the middle with the dialogue bewteem the hemp-beater and the grave-digger.This is a great novella that I highly recommend. As a side note it is available free on the Gutenberg Project website.

"[...] "The night is past, and the day is at hand; let us therefore cast off the works of darkness and put on the armour of light." (From the "Epistle" for the First Sunday of Advent). 1st. Prelude. The Foot of the Cross where my sins have all been laid. 2nd. Prelude. The grace of contrition and firm resolution. It is clear from the words which she has chosen for her "Epistle" for the First Sunday of Advent that the Church intends us during this solemn season to think about sin,—the darkness of the past night and the light of the day that is coming and our duty with regard to both. It is not sin in the abstract, but our own personal sins that we are to consider. "Let us cast off the works of darkness." If the Apostle Paul included himself in that "us," we need not fear to do the same. It is meet, when we are thinking on the one hand of Him Who is coming to save us from our sins and on the other of His coming to judge us "according[...]".

Ortus Christi, by Mother St. Paul

About the Author Mother St. Paul‘s books included Mater Christi: Meditations On Our Lady, Ortus Christi Meditations for Advent, Passio Christi: Meditations for Lent, Sponsa Christi Meditations on the Religious Life, Simple Meditations “Mother St. Paul, who had all her life been in straitened circumstances, kindly yet firmly impressed on her daughters the virtue of ‘holy poverty.’ She gave them the example herself, never wasting a moment of her time, an end of cotton or a scraping of lettuce. She was said to be often troubled by intense anxiety, but she kept that between herself and God, and did not waste her time in melancholy. She was perpetually busy; she had trained herself to leave the chapel for the parlour, and could break off her intercourse with almighty God at any moment to talk to a nun who had need of her advice….Timid as she had been in her early youth, Mother St. Paul had now acquired the art of governing with great firmness and authority. She was tall, cheerful and wholesome in appearance, and had made herself much liked. In reality she was very humble, and blamed herself whenever anything went wrong in the community.” -Maurice de La Sizeranne, Lilian Marian Leggatt, The Blind Sisters of Saint Paul

Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

Talks to farmers By Trent the 5-stars is for the layout, design and format of the book published by the University of California Library only, for i have not read the whole book through and unable to give it an honest critique.the publisher's version is a digital photo copy; each page is of an old original. Well put together and good paper was used.the following is my thoughts so far and not a thorough evaluation of the whole book; The first two chapters have been convicting and enlightening, Spurgeon is great at dissecting a verse and bringing it back together for its purpose; to point us to the Christ, our only true hope and joy. If your a farmer or gardener, these talks will be of much delight. the talks are a collection of his sermons, all united by agriculture themes. The verses chosen use agricultural truths to teach spiritual truths.

Blue Bird Weather, by Robert William Chambers

About the Author Robert William Chambers was an American author who is best known for his Art Nouveau short-story collection, The King in Yellow, considered to be one of the most important examples of American supernatural fiction. Chambers was a prolific writer, and although he continued to write within the weird genre, publishing The Maker of Moon, The Mystery of Choice, and The Tree of Heaven, none of his subsequent efforts achieved the success of The King in Yellow. Chambers early works greatly influenced the work of H.P. Lovecraft and other horror writers, as well as the 2014 HBO television show True Detective. Robert Chambers died in 1933 at the age of 68.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. One of Chambers' finer romances By Jared First serialized in 1911, Blue-Bird Weather was later published in its complete form in 1912.The story features Mr. Marche, the very model of the Chambersian hero. He's young, straight-limbed, fair-haired scion of an upper-crust family. He's taken his family business (something white collar and vaguely finance-y), carried it through times good and bad and now, he's off on a well-deserved vacation.Mr. Chambers' male heroes fall into two categories: the foppish and the flawed. In the diabetic's nightmare that was The Green Mouse, Mr. Chambers had a surfeit of the former. A vast array of insipid blue-blooded twits, propagating the species with their equally vapid mates. In his more serious romances, for example, The Firing Line and The Fighting Chance, the protagonists are about 90% perfect. For external viewing purposes, they maintain their Aryan sensibilities - but inside, they're plagued with alcholism, depression or some other un-Godly-flaw that can only be cured by the love of a good woman. In Blue-Bird Weather, Mr. Marche happily falls into the latter category. Not a member of the idle rich, he's hard-working and no fan of decadence. Moreover, after five years with no vacation, his doctor has sent him packing for a week - March is given the choice of a holiday or the "funny house". Years ago, Marche and his friends went in together and bought a hunting lodge and a small island in the Chesapeake region. An appointed superintendent (Mr. Herold) lives on the island and makes sure the game remains plentiful. Although an extravagant purchase, Marche and his club-mates eschewed the opulent hunting mansions of their peers and went for a simpler, more rustic feel.Blue-Bird Weather begins with Marche approaching the lodge - someplace, mind you, he hasn't seen for at least five years. He's resigned himself to being "out of the office" for a week, but at least he has the good manly pursuit of hunting and the good manly company of the gamekeeper. Except, of course, he doesn't.The hunting is completely fouled by the titular "blue-bird weather". The gray days and damp weather have created a malaise amongst the local waterfowl and they don't rush to the slaughter. Perhaps more disturbingly, Mr. Herold is ill and completely confined to his room, leaving Marche in the care of his 18 year old daughter, Molly.Marche goes through the complete range of emotions. Initially - and to his credit, very briefly - he's a little perturbed that the gamekeeper has fobbed him off with his daughter. This quite quickly moves into admiration. Molly, despite being a woman (and a right purty one, of course), is a cracking hunter. She not only does all the peasant-y tasks of smashing bushes about and the woman-y tasks of cooking all the meals but also is a fine shot. Better, in fact, than Marche. (To his credit, he's not particularly perturbed about this either.)This admiration - one sportsman to another - soon migrates towards something more serious. Molly's attractive figure and "cool, gray eyes" certainly spark an appreciation in Marche, but he's also drawn to the way that she cares for her younger brother (including an insistence that he learn his Latin) and her mysteriously absent father. It also becomes clear that she's been the acting superintendent for some time, with a talent for figures and for business. This last hurdle is where the author bangs his toe. Mr. Herold is revealed, unveiled and overcome in the course of a few short pages. As a last-minute explosion, he is a very damp squib. My initial sense was merely that he was dead - that Molly had been running the island on her own for years and needed to keep his demise a secret. Alas, it was nothing so interesting. Mr. Herold is very much alive and very much boring.Still, it isn't like the outcome is ever in doubt. Blue-Bird Weather is saturated in Kincaidian landscape prose and Mr. Chambers' typically plutocratic social leanings - everything is clearly going to be just fine. However, despite the caveats of the above, Blue-Bird Weather is a charming little tale and one that has dated oddly well. Marche is a good man, Molly a good woman and it is impossible not to wish them well. For readers looking for an introduction to Mr. Chambers' society romances in a less risky way (that is, less challenging and less eye-gaugingly dreadful), Blue-Bird Weather makes a good start.

However I will begrudgingly give this a good rating By Michael Harmon I very much hate textbooks and hate their prices. However I will begrudgingly give this a good rating. This book will be one that is useful for all sorts of service industry establishments. Not just food and beverage. It's methods can be applied in various environments. I'll keep it on hand for reference. The companion website gives good worksheets for formulas and can also give you many business templates for almost anything you may need in the service industry. If you are getting started or need a refresher on the basics of running a business I would actually recommend this book.
