About the Author Kabir Sehgal is a vice president in emerging market equities at J. P. Morgan in New York. He serves as an officer in the United States Navy Reserve, served as a speechwriter on a presidential campaign, and is a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is the New York Times bestselling author of books including Coined, Walk in My Shoes (with Andrew Young), A Bucket of Blessings, and Jazzocracy. Brown I begin with the tremendous contrast between the celebrities who provided gushing quotes for this book, and the ballot-stuffing reviewers here. Five five-star reviews posted within 36 hours of publication, all by people who only give five-star book reviews, three of whom have never reviewed anything else for Amazon (What are the chances that many people all decided to begin and end their Amazon reviewing careers with this book?), and two with a total of eleven other book reviews.Like many authors before him, Sehgal has attempted to take a broad look at money, its history and meaning. Like about half of those authors, he has chosen not to begin with a theory or even a definition, but to examine money in its various aspects. In fact, he begins long before the invention of money, discussing the general idea of exchange in evolution and human prehistory. Less than half the book concerns the economic function of money, and most of that simply lists ideas that have been advanced by others without expressing opinions or giving reasons or details. The social meaning of money gets some attention, as well as the neuroscience aspects, the technology and symbolism of coinage and some likely technological futures.One way this could work is if the author were a talented and stylish writer. There's a lot of fascinating material to mine among these topics, even if no larger meaning emerges. And Sehgal did a lot of reading, interviewing and traveling--including to some out-of-the-way and dangerous places--to generate interesting information. Unfortunately, he spends far too much time talking about himself and details irrelevant to the stories. In fact, he loves details, but none of them build to give a feeling for the places he visits, or insight of any kind. He never lets other people, or places or research or anything else, tell stories. I don't know if it's that he doesn't trust his material, or if he doesn't know how to get outside himself while writing, but it makes for a somewhat tedious book, even when the topic should be scintillating.Of course, you can forgive a stolid style in a book that teaches you a lot. But the book falls short here as well. Sehgal mentions a lot of ideas, but doesn't question them in any depth, and he doesn't relate them to one another. There is a lot of discussion of gift exchange, for example, but does not address obvious questions about their relation, or the reasons for differences, or when each is used. We repay loyalty, earn trust and reciprocate affection--by not by or for money. Why? Is the money used to measure Gross Domestic Product the same money as the value on my Metrocard, or my airline frequent flyer miles? Questions like these will occur to the reader on every page, but not to the author on any page.There are many good examples of an average person wondering about a topic and relating his or her journey to understand it. Some are good stories, others do a better job of teaching than textbooks by experts, some succeed on both grounds. This one does neither.

Lion Rarely is a subject so familiar and yet so unknown. We participate daily in a system which has evolved over millennia, yet we don't have any idea of why or how it came to be the way it is. We simply accept it and participate.Kabir Sehgal has done an incredible job of exploring the basic building block on which the world's economy runs - money - and making it an enlightening and entertaining experience along the way. Rather than looking at it from the predictable perspective of most financial institutions, Mr. Sehgal explores the deeper roots of money through the prism of psychology, anthropology, biology, technology, politics, neuroscience, and more.It is a fascinating read and one guaranteed to inform those with even the greatest financial acumen, and those with none at all.

A brilliant survey of the neuroscience of financial transactions throughout history By Robert Morris Kabir Sehgal is not a neuroscientist nor am I and countless others who read this book. Its subtitle refers to the rich history of "money" but I think a more appropriate word is "currency," often -- but not always -- in the form of coins. Consider the ancient aphorism that, "in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king." Sight (albeit limited sight) is the coin of that realm. You get the idea.Sehgal strategically inserts dozens of relevant quotations throughout his lively and eloquent narrative, including this gem from Voltaire: "It is more easy to write on money than obtain it; and those who gain it, jest much at those who only know how to write about it." I have no ideas whether or not Sehgal has gained affluence but he can certainly write well when sharing his thoughts about "an ancient topic in new ways" while "hearing the different frequencies of money."He succeeds in achieving his stated objective: to present "a multidimensional and interdisciplinary portrait of currency through the ages. It seeks to deepen your understanding of the history of money, and to show how it continues to shape our future in often imperceptible ways. I hope this book wsill explode your perception of money, and help you coin new ways to think about it." He certain gives his reader "new ways to think about it.
