"[...]anxious scrutinising question: 'Is my sorrow deep enough?' Deep enough! What for? What is the use of sorrow for sin? To lead a man to repentance and to faith. If you have as much sorrow as leads you to penitence and trust you have enough. It is not your sorrow that is going to wash away your sin, it is Christ's blood. So let no man trouble himself about the question, Have I sorrow enough? The one question is: 'Has my sorrow led me to cast myself on Christ?' II. Still further, look now for a moment at the next stage here. 'Godly sorrow worketh repentance.' What is repentance? No doubt many of you would answer that it is 'sorrow for sin,' but clearly this text of ours draws a distinction between the two. There are very few of the great key-words of Christianity that have[...]".

"[...]incarnate of ideas that she liked or ideas that she disliked. Thus emptied of its natural furniture, her mind had borrowed from her heart and become filled, wholly occupied with the emotion of her love for Erik Dorn. More than lover and husband, he was an obsession. He had replaced a world for her. It was of his wife that Dorn was thinking when he arrived this summer morning at his desk in the editorial room. He had remembered suddenly that the day was the anniversary of their marriage. Time had passed rapidly. Seven years! Like seven yesterdays. He seemed able to remember them in their entirety with a single thought, as one can remember a column of figures without recalling either their meaning or their sum.[...]".

By Solisto Hecht is no Hemingway or Steinbeck but I consider him a very good writer! This was his first novel and I enjoyed it; if, for no other reason, its historical value, its setting is partly in post WWI Berlin.

When a historic battlefield site is discovered and studied, the focus is often on the “hardware”: remnants of weaponry, ammunition, supplies, and equipment that archaeologists carefully unearth, analyze, conserve, and frequently place on display in museums. But what about the “software”? What can archaeology teach us about the humans involved in the conflict: their social mores and cultural assumptions; their use and understanding of power? In The Archaeology of Engagement: Conflict and Revolution in the United States, Dana L. Pertermann and Holly K. Norton have assembled a collection of studies that includes sites of conflicts between groups of widely divergent cultures, such as Robert E. Lee's mid-1850s campaign along the Concho River and the battles of the River Raisin during the War of 1812. Notably, the second half of the book applies the editors’ principles of conflict event theory to the San Jacinto Battlefield in Texas, forming a case study of one of America's most storied—and heavily trafficked—battle sites.

Review  “The Archaeology of Engagement is a significant contribution to the growing literature in conflict archaeology. This volume greatly extends the methodology of site examination through its case studies and makes a serious theoretical contribution with the concept of Conflict Event Theory. The original data and fresh ideas presented here will encourage archaeologists and others interested in conflict to follow new avenues of research.”—Charles E. My favorite sections detailed the new discoveries at San Jacinto in Texas. Good archaeology combined with some unique ideas that can be used at sites of similar time periods across the nation.

The Flying U Ranch, by B. M. Bower

From Library Journal B.M. (Bertha Muzzy) Bower was the first woman to make a living writing Westerns, knocking out well over a dozen. This 1914 outing tackles the clash between the original cattlemen and the encroaching sheep ranchers. Both groups vying for the same grazing land historically was the cause of a lot of tension and bloodshed similar to the range wars between cowboys and farmers. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From the Back Cover Life at the Flying U Ranch in the Bear Paw country of Montana was pleasant - until thousands of sheep invaded the coulee. B. M. Bower casts the ancient enmity between cattlemen and sheepmen in her own robust and slyly humorous style. Flying U Ranch brings back the Happy Family of cowboys introduced in Chip of the Flying U. Bertha Muzzy Bower, a Montanan herself, understood the joshing, boasting, and thoroughly decent young hands who worked at the Flying U - Andy, Pink, Slim, Big Medicine, Happy Jack, and the other members of the Happy Family. Here they must confront defiant sheepherders just when Chip and the Old Man are in Chicago. Bower delights in showing how they deal with rage and frustration without resorting to violence. The witty and nervy Flying U bunch gets satisfaction from a difficult situation justly ended.

About the Author B. M. (Bertha Muzzy) Bower was the first woman to make a career of writing westerns. Old time fun By Twostory A dated, but well written western yarn of the actions of cowboy ranch hands dealing with troubles with adjacent property-stealing sheep herders while their boss is away. At first it goes bad for the cowboys, but together they come up with a plan to attempt to get even and stop the take-over. All the characters and activities are believable. Some clever twists hold your interest despite the old-fashioned writing style.

Review "From single-celled foraminifera to gigantic steppe mammoths, this volume presents a sweeping panorama of ancient life and is recommended for non-specialists interested in palaeontology or evolutionary biology." Library Journal; "A History of Life in 100 Fossils looks like a coffee-table picture book - which it is, with wonderful illustrations - but the book is also much more: one hundred stepping stones from the Earth's deep-time past to its shallow present, each artfully illustrated by an iconic fossil." Nature journal

About the Author Paul D. Taylor has worked in the Earth Sciences Department at the Natural History Museum, London for 35 years, heading the Invertebrate and Plants division between 1990 and 2003. His research focuses on fossil and living bryozoans, with subsidiary interests in evolution, palaeoecology and fossil folklore. He is the author of Fossil Invertebrates. Aaron O'Dea is a palaeobiologist at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama. He uses the fossil record to understand the drivers of evolution and to reconstruct what Caribbean reefs were like before humans. Aaron has a broad passion for exploring, understanding and communicating the history of life in the tropics.

The author pulls the reader away from close inspection of trees and gives us a look at the forest. From the supposed very earliest life forms through the present, the reader sees development of features of life forms through time, and how the same feature can develop among water-dwellers and land-dwellers. It shows how a feature can be lost with a major extinction, to show up later in a different species. It shows how features develop to serve creatures in their current environment. And, I suspect, there's a basic pattern to life forms that goes back to the very earliest life.

Its about a woman who finds out her new husband was once accused of murder. She decides, against a great deal of advice including her husband's, to find evidence of his innocence. On the way, she meets a number of interesting and superbly drawn characters. The book does contain a good deal of Victorian romance and prejudice, however. I found the portrayal of a smart young woman as constantly overcome by her emotions a bit bothersome. Plus, I've never liked love stories and, basically, this is one.

I knew going in that this was not one of his more famous works but I bought it since I have read five others written by him and I had so far very much liked all the others (Dead Secret, Haunted Hotel, Woman in White, No Name & The Moonstone). This book did not disappoint me and, in fact, I read it in a mere 4 days. This is a very easy read that keeps the reader guessing on "who done it".The story is about Valeria Woodville (Macallan) who married a man that she finds out married her under an assumed name. She is bound and determined to find out why which she does depite being asked not to by her husband and his best friend. Once she finds out why her husband married her under an assumed name, (hint - he was accused of the murder of his first wife) - she then decides to prove that her husband is innocent. However, the evidence looks pretty damning that her husband actually did murder his first wife. Here is the point where she meets several different people and the puzzle begins to come together. By the end, I had thought of at least 4 different people that I thought had murdered his first wife.I will not give away the end but it is not too surprising. However, this book was an easy read and an enjoyable read. If you like Wilkie's style of writing, you will like this book. This book is certainly not as good as the Woman in White, The Moonstone or No Name, but it is good nonetheless. There are parts of this book that tend to show the prejudice against women during this time. Many times throughout the book, Valeria is asked what can a woman do that the (male) lawyers did not do during the trial. However, Wilkie gives Valeria the love and determination to find out the truth and she does so. The comments about women did not bother me for I knew this book was written in 1870's and the times were different. If you like Wilkie and have read No Name, Moonstone and Woman in White, this is a good easy read by a good author. I look forward to reading more of his works.

By propertius Without coming a "spoiler" it is necessary to be rather circumspect about the plot of the and by anticipating the ending or knowing it, the entire plot becomes to obvious in the matter motivations and clues. This mystery is very clearly a book that is infused with Victorian sensibilities and attitudes. This is the biggest problem for the modern reader to overcome and once this has been done it is really a intriguing and engaging mystery which touches upon murder, marriage, identity and the all encompassing question of motive. Think of it as "Jane Eyre" with barristers and police.

Excellent practical guide to fundamental theoretical concepts By Kendall Burks As a multi-instrumentalist, composer, graduated music major and current music teacher, I've spent many years studying music theory and both thinking about how and experimenting with ways to communicate about it in a way that is both clear and practically useful. This is an incredibly difficult task to say the least, but with this book, Ross Trottier has succeeded in taking some massive strides on that front. I would certainly recommend this book to the beginning student seeking to build a solid foundation of musical understanding, as well as to the more advanced student seeking to gain a fresh and clear perspective on topics they are already familiar with, but may have struggled to understand. The author does a good job of crafting clear explanations, and sequencing those explanations so that they build upon each other in a way that makes the topic seem as easy as he promises it is. His general approach and philosophy facilitates this, which emphasizes clear understanding of the most essential foundations and the relationship of those to music as it can be easily practiced by the reader. This book is not a stylistic manual, but rather a concise explanation of principals and concepts that govern a multitude of styles. This is the explicit aim of the author, and it is to his credit given the polystylistic and virtually boundary-less musical world we inhabit today. On a more specific level, I have found the author's innovative diagram of the tonal map, which is a central feature of his teaching method, to be a simple and elegant, yet powerful method for teaching the harmonic implications of melody and the basic principal of voice leading. It's quite a powerful tool!

By Work In Progress Fritz Leiber was one of the greatest science fiction and fantasy writers of the mid-twentieth century. His themes often touched on the ridiculous aspects of our society's mores, and fashions, and often about technology gone wrong. This is a story about a good idea gone astray...you might say with a mind of its own. An executive looking for the next big idea gets a suggestion from his friend, how about something that can remind you about appointments and help you throughout the day? It all starts innocently enough. By the way, if you saw the animated movie "Meet the Robinsons", you might recognize something from here.

By shaz A classic sci-fi novella with ideas that are very forward thinking for it's time and relevant today. The title is a unfortunate since it implies that it's a cheesy horror story rather than a story about technology, but it does make sense if you are a Leiber fan and understand his way with words.

Winesburg Ohio, by Sherwood Anderson

Amazon.com Review Library Journal praised this edition of Sherwood Anderson's famed short stories as "the finest edition of this seminal work available." Reconstructed to be as close to the original text as possible, Winesburg, Ohio depicts the strange, secret lives of the inhabitants of a small town. In "Hands," Wing Biddlebaum tries to hide the tale of his banishment from a Pennsylvania town, a tale represented by his hands. In "Adventure," lonely Alice Hindman impulsively walks naked into the night rain. Threaded through the stories is the viewpoint of George Willard, the young newspaper reporter who, like his creator, stands witness to the dark and despairing dealings of a community of isolated people.

From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up-Life in a small western town, by Sherwood Anderson. Narrated by Flo Gibson. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Editor White referred back to Anderson's original manuscript, typescript, letters, diaries, and early versions to reconstruct the most accurate edition of this 1919 staple available. (Classic Returns, LJ 1/97)Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Unhappy people trapped in sad webs of their own making By Linda Linguvic Sherwood Anderson published this collection of short stories in 1919 all set in fictional town of Winesburg, Ohio. Even though it's written in the third person, it's told through the narrative voice of George Willard, the town reporter, who shows up in most of the stories, sometimes taking an active role and at other times just telling a story. It is obvious that the writer loves these people, and is frustrated at the isolation and unhappiness of their lives, even though he makes it clear that they hold within themselves everything needed to make them happy. The character in the first story is a dying old writer who is attempting to write about all the people he has known as a "book of grotesques". What follows is the collection of stories, which each character fulfilling that expectation. There are the young lovers who don't quite connect; there is a old man so obsessed with religious fervor that he attempts to sacrifice his grandson; there is a married man who regrets it all and tries to warn a younger man of future unhappiness; there's a doctor and a sick woman who try to connect. The book is full of people who toil all their lives and never achieve happiness. As I made my way through the book I kept hoping that even one of the characters would rise above the morass. It didn't happen. The writer has a wonderful sense of place and the town of Winesburg in the early part of the 20th Century is very real. These people were not poor or disadvantaged in the usual sense of the word; they didn't suffer fire, floods or famine. Instead, they trapped themselves in their own psychological webs that made it impossible for them to lead anything but sad unfulfilled lives. This is a fine book and stands alone as a clear voice of its time.

Isn't one of the ultimate benchmarks of successful parenting when your child selects a book from her bookshelf, and says: "Here Dad, you may enjoy this"? Of course I had to overcome that instinctive shudder when I recognized the not very "zippy" title as belong to one of those "school assignment" books I had so successfully dodged. Yet considering it is far past the time to reconsider that initial aversion, and that the only teacher I have to please is myself; and then there is the matter of the pedigree of the recommender... so why not?I did not get past the introduction before I uncovered a recommendation that reinforced the others. Sherwood Anderson was a mentor to both Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner, no small matter in itself. The not very fictional town of Winesburg, Ohio is based on the very real town of Clyde, Ohio, wherever that is. It proves to be located not that far off the shores of Lake Erie, between Cleveland and Toledo. Clyde still has only around 6,000 people, and their website promotes the virtues of small town living. But where is their most famous writer? You have to "drill down" two levels in their website, to find a brief, two sentence mention of the writer who literally "put them on the map." They'd rather talk about their Civil War General, James McPherson, or the Whirlpool plant. So, perhaps the ultimate endorsement: he had told too much about them, a realistic assessment of the town that jars with the "pro-business" image the website promotes, and thus numerous folks today are still not fond of him.The book itself is composed of 24 short stories; many of them could be "stand alone" in their excellence. In some cases the character appears only in that story, such as The Reverend Curtis Hartman in "The Strength of God," or Enoch Robinson in "Loneliness." There are other characters, such as Helen White, and George Willard, who is a reporter for the local newspaper at 18, and is a thinly disguised Sherwood Anderson, who appear in multiple stories. Anderson's introductory story, entitled "The Book of the Grotesques" about a writer who: "All of the men and women the writer had ever known had become grotesques," which may be a bit harsh, but clearly this book is peopled with life's outliers, and many "lives of quiet desperation." Issues that haunt the papers today were covered by Anderson then, such as the male teacher who may have placed his hands on the boys once too often, and was run out of town, and the female teacher who had "a thing" for a lad 12 years her junior. There is also the voyeuristic preacher, and the farmer who is an instrument of "God's will." All not your normal Chamber of Commerce fare.Anderson's prose is lean; his characters are drawn tightly and swiftly, and he seems to have a knack for the specific detail that says so much more about the person. There is also much normalcy in the book; much concerns the longing of the human heart, the figurative and literal groping with the opposite sex that is part of the coming of age process, and beyond. As in real life, the relationships can become complex and ambivalent, and Anderson even speculates on the nature of the solace his fictional mother may have been obtaining from the local doctor. Some reviewers were concerned that everything didn't tie together in the end - but I figure that is the essence of real life. In the conclusion, George Willard, just like the real life Sherwood Anderson, boards the train, and leaves town, seeking his place in the wider world. The irony is that the material for his finest writing was obtained during his first 18 years, in Clyde.Much belated apologies, certainly for myself, as well as those 1-star reviewers, to the English teachers who tried in their Sisyphean task. Mea culpa. And thanks to my daughter for this solid 5-star read.

40 of 43 people found the following review helpful. Surprisingly Modern By SeaShell I'm ashamed to say that I avoided this book for decades - decades! - based soley on a cover. My mother had the book on her bookshelves, an older edition with a painting of a turn of the century couple courting on the front. It looked vaguely impressionist, and left me to conclude that the stories inside would probably be a bunch of sentimentalist claptrap. How wrong I was!The book inside is more akin to a Hopper painting than a Degas. Anderson manages an amazing level of character development within the short stories. The stories themselves work independently, but also work together to tell the story of an American Midwestern town. And the feeling one is left with is that everything you have read is essentially and authentically American. To comment on the Kindle version specifically, it seems well formatted to this reader. I've noticed a typo here and there, but nothing glaring, and nothing that distracts from the experience of reading the book.

We Are Generation Z: How Identity, Attitudes, and Perspectives Are Shaping Our Future, by Vivek Pandit

Review ''Vivek shows that his generation, through the use of the Internet, will revolutionize how people think and view others simply by the fact that more and more people are being exposed to diverse backgrounds, unique educational experiences, and other religions. One can argue that if there is a generation to help move mankind forward to truly believe that there is one race, the human race, Generation Z has the best chance of doing so. And [in We Are Generation Z] Vivek does a nice job of showing how it might accomplish this lofty goal.'' --Bryan Mark Rigg, PhD

About the Author Vivek Pandit is an ordinary teen with extraordinary passions. Like many high schoolers, he walks in sneakers with headphones in his ears and sees endless possibilities. He is a devoted older brother who plays varsity football, does crew in the off-season, performs modern dance, and loves to make everyone laugh. In school, he enjoys psychology, math, and international studies. One day, he hopes to explore all seven continents--and maybe even another planet.

Bayliss It's hard to believe someone as young as Vivek has put together such a well written book that combines anecdotes and research to provide the older generation with insight into generation Z. I'll admit I often have to ask my 12 year old how to do something on the Iphone, but now I understand more fully HOW and WHY this generation deals with technology on a day by day basis and what makes them tick. His style reminds me of Malcolm Gladwell - very readable and engaging. Kudos to Mr. Pandit for producing such a succinct study on the next generation.

By Amazon buyer The author did a good job of explaining what's different about Generation Z, and why they think differently than other generations. Personal anecdotes are supported by research studies to illustrate the impact that this generation is having on society. Unlike other books about Gen Z that have a marketing angle, this book covers topics as diverse as Gen Z's views on competition vs collaboration, technology and identity development, education, science, politics, and privacy. I have two children in high school, and feel better about their future after reading this book!

By Amazon Customer As a mother of a 17 year old girl who will be graduating from high school as well as someone who deals with the general public, I was excited to hear about this book. After reading it, I found myself pleasantly impressed with this young man's insight, research and one-on-one interviews withhis peers. Vivek has done a great job in helping us older folks understand this new generation. I am very glad he sees great things can beaccomplished by sticking together. And what is more is that he convinced me that Generation Z will produce more because of self discovery. We should all look within ourselves as he has! -C. C. Justus

In this Book, I talk about my encounter that I had, with a Sasquatch while bow hunting in the Pacific Northwest. I dive into the heart of the Mystery that surrounds the Legend of Bigfoot by separating fact from common misconceptions. I also discuss a few popular theories on Infra sound, vocalizations, dermal ridge patterns, Migratory patterns of a Sasquatch and much more. I've studied this large, elusive primate for many years and for the first time, I've decided to share my findings with the public! Have you ever wondered why so many people believe in Bigfoot but can't figure out why there lacks any major hard evidence? Or is there? Why are they so elusive and is there any hard forensic evidence that supports any real popular theories? Read this book and and decide for yourself, if you think we have an Unidentified North American Primate that is living and breathing in the Pacific Northwest!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Easy and quick read! By True Review I enjoyed reading the author's story about Bigfoot. His encounter is very believable and described simply. Many Bigfoot encounter stories include pages and pages of unnecessary background information, but this one gets right to the point. It is a very quick read, but there are quite a few grammatical errors. I enjoyed reading through the author's different theories and explanations regarding all things Bigfoot, but most of it is just pure speculation. I was surprised at how little the author actually described his encounter compared to all the theory and speculation and scientific info he provided. Overall, this is a good short read that paints the picture of a convincing but run-of-the-mill sighting. The grammatical errors were my main issue, but I would recommend this as a quick read to any Bigfoot fan.
