The First Hundred Thousand, by Ian Hay

About the Author John Hay Beith was a British novelist and playwright who wrote under the pseudonym Ian Hay. A graduate of Cambridge, Beith initially worked as a schoolmaster, but gave up teaching when his writing became commercially successful. Beith served as an army officer in France during the First World War, and his humorous portrayal of army life, The First Hundred Thousand, was a bestseller upon publication.

After the war, Beith s novels would never sell as well again, but he d developed an interest in the theatre and wrote or co-wrote a number of long-running light comedies, as well as adaptations and original screenplays for the cinema. His collaborators included Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse. Beith died in 1952.

Well-written, recommend for any student of military history. Students of The Great War seldom reads these types of stories, but they should, as they give great insight into the soldiers' and officers' minds during the train-up.

No punches are pulled and the description of life behind the trenches and in the front line are among the best I have read By Amazon Customer A realistic view of the life of a highland regiment following Kitchener's massive recruiting campaign during the First World War. The characters are life-like and the incidents utterly believable. The formation of the regiment as a band of "not quite sure why we're here or what we're doing" amateur soldiers and the training that follows their various paths to gaining battle skills is told in amusing but graphic way and gives an insight in what was involved in making the regiment into a fighting unit which is eventually sent out to France. No punches are pulled and the description of life behind the trenches and in the front line are among the best I have read. Ian Hay's simple but skilful style suits the story. The Battle of Loos was a test for the brigade to which our regiment belongs and although they did well in achieving their objectives, the casualties suffered, though less than some units, were horrific. It's the same old story told over and over again about battles on the Western Front but I found this account particularly believeable.

An Excellent Collection of Anecdotes from the First World War By Fantasyman An excellent collection of anecdotes concerning the experiences of young Scottish soldiers in the early years of the First World War. Written with a wry humor, the book takes the reader from the early days of mustering to the trenches of the Western Front in 1915. Like I said, a wry sense of humor, but, hard to find much humor in the slaughter of so many fine young men when they finally are called upon to participate in their first "big push." Indeed, much of the actual fighting is left out of the story, concentrating more on life in the trenches and the ordinary experiences that soldiers met with.Ian Hay was the pen name of John Hay Beith, later Major General John Hay Beith, CBE. Wikipedia has a very nice write up about him.
